I think there's no trick in the Maths Question... with just a simple addition, you get the answer(5100). Purpinkx got the true tricky answer in your scenario A.

Scenario A ;

take 1000 = 0 - 1000 = -1000
add 40 to it = -1000+40 = -960
now add 1000 = -960+1000 = 40
add 30 to it = 40+30 = 70
now add 1000 = 70+1000=1070
add 20 to it = 1070+20=1090
now add 1000=1090+1000=2090
add 10 to it =2090+10= 2100
now add 1000=2100+1000=

3100
scenario B

take 1000 = 0 + 1000 = 1000
add 40 to it = 1000+40 = 1040
now add 1000 = 1040+1000 =2040
add 30 to it = 2040+30 = 2070
now add 1000 = 2070+1000=3070
add 20 to it = 3070+20=3090
now add 1000=3090+1000=4090
add 10 to it =4090+10= 4100
now add 1000=4100+1000=

5100.
