Welcome onboard fellow Nairalanders. This thread is for those who want to make money publishing articles or short stories/reports on amazon. To get started, you will need to create a free publishing account with amazon KDP- Kindle Direct Publishing. Let's get started;

You see, One of the advantages of Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is its ability to generate passive income. This is one of the reasons I love this business model. But you may want to ask, what is amazon and how can Nigerians make money publishing books on amazon?

So, what is amazon all about? Amazon is the largest online retail store on the globe. Amazon is also the best platform for independent authors to publish their books and make money from their work. You can choose how much royalty you want to earn from your book. You can either earn 70% or 30% from your book royalty. But I set my royalty earning at 70%. So, I would also like you to do the same for your books. We don’t need to tell too many stories about amazon as they are already the online umpire for indie authors. So, let’s talk about the rules of Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing. Before we talk about how to create a free account with amazon, let's look at the dos and don'ts of Amazon Kindle direct publishing.

The Golden Rules of Amazon KDP

The Do’s of Amazon Kindle Publishing
1. Make sure your account is verified by Amazon before publishing your first book.
2. Submit the necessary documents for your account verification. Such as Government Issued Identity Card – Permanent Voter’s card, National Identity card, International Passport, or any other means of identification that clearly shows your name and address.
3. You will need to verify your home address by submitting a copy of a bank statement or Electricity/Utility bill, that shows your Real Name and home address as well.
4. When registering for an account with amazon kdp, make sure the name you use tallies with the name on your identity card.
5. You can either use your real name to publish your books or you can use a pen name. (nickname). I used E.D. Jonas to publish my books and I also use Sandra Mayor in other books (while my real name is: Eigbedion Destiny Jonah). So, it depends on the market and what you intend to achieve. If you are really serious about this business, I would advise that you use your real name or you’ll better abbreviate your name to suit your brand in case you want to build a brand around your Name. I think Jonas sounds good like an American name. or at least, it sounds stylish compared to Eigbedion Jonah, Adebayo, Chinedu, or Abdulahi - which all sound so local. If I were named any of those names above, I would change it to something like: Ade (popular musician in the UK) - plus your English name, Chi (sounds like a Chinese name) - plus your English name, and Ali (Mohammed Ali was a popular boxer in the US) - plus English name. Because, the abbreviated names above all sound familiar in the US.

The reason for this is simple; Our target audience is the US and UK markets. So, it naturally makes sense to bear names similar to the people we intend to serve. But if you already have a large audience or you are an influential figure, you can use your full name. Please, don’t get me wrong, I am not saying you wouldn’t make it online if you use your real name, but people need to build trust and know little about you before buying from you. Take, for instance, you’re teaching people: How To Cook Paleo Diets, How To Cook Vegan Food, How To Smoke Meat In Electric Smoker, How To Dance, How To Sing, How To Plant Flower, How To Set Up Online Business, How To Improve Memory And Brain Functions. - People will likely open your book if they believe that, you live within their environment and that what you teach is applicable in their regions.

So, the choice of the name to use is completely up to you. For example, Bishop David Oyedipo is a big figure and he has multiple books published on amazon, Wole Soyinka is a big name and people will be interested to read books written by him because he’s a global phenomenon. But if you have already built a fan base or you think that you can use your book to attract a large audience to be more popular, then go ahead and do it. After all, there’s no harm in trying.

How I Became a Successful Publisher On Amazon

Just as our faces are different, so are our expectations. My kindle success goal was to publish books to earn me at least $500 (Five hundred Dollars) within my first 3 months in the publishing business. And I achieved that goal a few months beyond my projected period. It’s normal for every business, though I didn’t achieve my goal within 3 months, yet, I made enough money to keep my hope alive that this business will work out. But today, I make over $1,500 (about #580,000 Naira) from my publishing business.

So, if your goal is to earn $1,000 (360,000 Naira) per month, you can achieve this with 1-3 books, or more, - Plus strategic marketing/advertising plans. We will talk more about book advertising in a subsequent thread.

How can I make quick money with amazon KDP?

I focus on Nonfiction books and children's books because I am not a gifted writer. But I have been able to develop myself to write on any topic within the past years of publishing books on amazon.

If you are a motivational speaker, teacher, pastor, graphic designer, or you have any skills that you think people will be interested to learn about, then, this is your golden opportunity to teach the world your skills by leveraging Amazon's publishing platform. Also, if you think that you can not combine simple words to form a statement, but you are able to read this thread, I have got you covered as well. For me, I think the best category to write on is the How to… (how to train dogs, how to be healthy, how to build relationships…), health and fitness category, and Recipe Books. (b) Learn How to format your kindle books and paperback version, it is as simple as ABC...
(c) You’ll need a professionally designed book cover (Don’t worry, if you have no idea about cover design. Once again, I will show you websites to hire professional graphics and book cover designers).
(d) You will need a means of receiving payment from amazon. (amazon will not transfer your funds into your local bank account.) You will need to have an international bank account. Again, don’t get confused or discouraged. I will also show you how to apply and set up a USA bank account that will send you an ATM card to withdraw your funds at any ATM designated bank all around the world. I am sure you have heard of Payoneer Payment Service?
(e) Your short story books, should have at least 1,500 words. Except for children and color books.
(f) Amazon marketing support service.

How To Register Your Kindle Publishing Account

To create a free account with amazon, visit www(dot)kdp(dot)amazon(dot)com and register with your “real” details. Use your real name, your correct home address, email address, and phone number where necessary. Also, remember to choose a password you can easily remember and write it down somewhere. In fact, I wrote all my login detail in my diary, because I wouldn’t want to mess up things when trying to access my account.

Now that you have signed up for a free account with Amazon, you will need to complete your account information before amazon can send payments into your bank account.

Dealing With Tax Issues

TAX: Amazon will ask you to provide and complete your tax information before publishing your books. The process is simple and straightforward. Just go through the process and type your name in the area they require your signature. It is really just a formality because you are a Nigerian and there are no tax details to supply. As a Nigerian, 30% will be withheld from your royalty as tax for sales in the USA and some other marketplaces. This is because Nigeria does not have a tax treaty with America. The tax for UK and other European marketplace sales is very low or nonexistent in most cases.
