Very easy. Manufacturing is one. The entire Chinese economy rests on manufacturing and they are almost catching up with US in terms of the size of their economy. Another example is IT. That is the backbone of the Indian economy today and they're doing very well.

Mention a sector that is capable of generating more revenues than the oil and gas sector?
See the word I used

Other sectors

That is to say collectively they will dwarf the oil and gas sector

Eg Manufacturing and Agriculture if fully developed and exported, the earnings that will be realised will surpass oil and gas

Japan makes more money from manufacturing than Nigeria makes from oil and gas

Malaysia makes more money from palm oil sales ALONE than we make from oil and gas. Now imagine if other agricultural products are fully developed in that country and what it will be contributing.

The issue is how will the revenue from these new golden eggs be shared , oil revenue was shared with 13% given to the Niger delta states as host states. For manufacturing, agriculture and services what will the hosts state get , what will Niger delta get and will population still be a parameter in the distribution of other people's wealth , what happens to the jokers who became over night billionaires no thanks to the Niger Delta oil wealth.

Will the hardworking igbo trader part with his profit to be used on some almajiri or will the hardworking northern farmer use his wealth for the repair of third mainland bridge , will other Nigerians allow their company headquaters based in lagos to be milked by the lagos government in the name of annual registration fees and multiple taxation, will the hard working igbo importer allow Area boys to extort money from his boys when a container lands in lagogs all in the name of settlement

The only golden eggs that we need are the brains that God has given us. China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia etc. All those countries have no considerable natural resources. How did they manage to become economic success stories? By using their God given brains. Human resources is all we need nothing more. In my opinion every state should control their own natural resources and only need to pay taxes to the center. The federal government should begin to focus on developing human resources and policy.
God bless you

In the 1950s and 1960s

Nobody heard the words Economic Diversification because each region depended on their own resources which they developed as a result of the national fiscal system we operated

J12:
Oil still remains our golden egg even at the current low price. No other sector or industry can give the country that much revenue without much stress. Besides, the current downtrend is only temporary.
Wrong

Other sectors if fully exploited will dwarf oil wealth.

The solution GEJ is applying is diversification method based on FG effort which is partially right but will be completely right if States and LGAs are rewarded with a greater % as FG hands off to become beneficiary of the other % once the rest is shared between FG States and LGAs
PoliticsRe: On The Decline In Oil Revenue. by EasternLeopard: 3:21pm On Jan 06, 2015
san316:
Do u not think it is now high time we started working on those sectors and ignored oil revenue? for Gods sake, our budget is still based on oil benchmark
Its time we enthrone true federalism

When each State and LGA is encouraged to keep 50% of whatever is generated within her territory, they will br forced to develop their golden eggs transforming our economy to that filled with golden eggs.

We can start by insisting that 20% of all royalties and taxes generated within a State stays with the state.

Then this 20% should be increased by 1% every year until it gets to 50%.

This will take 30years which is enough time for all States to adjust themselves.

I just want to ask a question. the SS sure lays the golden egg in Nigeria. However, Oil prices are becoming incredibly low of recent with no signs of improving. This invariably means a serious decline in oil revenue.

What will now be our golden egg and from where will it come?
Nigeria has so many golden eggs eg

Agriculture

Mineral Resources

Manufacturing

Human Resources

Tourism

Etc

What is hindering our national development is absence of True Federalism.

Ofcourse I don't, neither will I defend mismanagement
Under GMB control of PTF there were accusations of stolen money/ inflated figures although it was said Buhari was not involved.

Barcanista

The problem as stated by WhiteTechnology is

More of a faulty system which is prone to corruption. Which is why he insisted on True Federalism and Publication of institutions activities for public scrutiny

WhiteTechnology went to the point of using the case of Jesus and Judas. That if Judas was asked to give daily account of his activities, that

1) He would have find it difficult to steal

2) He would have being caught if he had continue with his evil practice.

NB He said unlike the disciples Jesus knew because he had divine power but didn't stop in order to fulfill prophecy and also to teach Christians the need to make auditing of accounts compulsory if they desire to catch the Judas amongst them

So you see WhiteTechnology is right

This shows that if Buhari fails to apply the proposal suggested by WhiteTechnology, people will steal undetected by Buhari.

My friend the way forward is

AND

INSTITUTIONS PUBLICATING THEIR ACTIVITIES SO THAT THE PUBLIC CAN SCRUTINIZE THEM.

Yes, I got the calculations wrong. 1.5 trillion for the poorest in the land is an investment worthwhile. The kids will go to school, be immunized and young Nigerians will be trained. These people will become competent and productive citizens. They are mostly likely to avoid picking up arms against the state and can meaningfully contribute to the development of the country. I fully support this programme. Only a handful rich have had access to the country's wealth through stealing. The money stolen so far in Jonathan's adminstration alone can sustain the programme for another at 10 years.
vantage7:
PDP has raped this country to the extent of making Nigerians believe their country cannot have the funds to sustain ordinary unemployment benefits programs like this (which many countries of the world have including the US and UK). Sad. What if I tell you that based on what the government of Nigeria actually ought to be earning from all its sources of revenue, a 4 trillion Naira annual budget is a massive travesty? You will be surprised how much extra Nigeria will earn by plugging the bleeding due to oil theft alone (a term that only exists in Nigeria) even at low oil prices. Then you have government overspending. A simple case in point was when the late Yaradua planned to spend about 62 million for the 50th anniversary celebration in 2010 and oga GEJ during whose tenure it took place spent 10 billion! And then you have corruption. And stealing cool.
Aloralord1:
You are the pathetic one here. All uve been saying is that it isn't feasible. Until GMB gets there, its safe to assume its very possible. How many billions of dollars has GEJ squandered? U wanna tell me blocking those loopholes can't fund these programs?
You are hellbent on ridiculing Buhari's manifestos; be sincere, what is in it for you? You are obviously a paid agent. Must everyone join u in bringing down GMB because u claim to know economics? I insist that its doable. Those who know Buhari knows he means whatever he says.
Use that money to create jobs for them. So that when the grow up , they can feed themselves and contribute to national wealth

Exactly, the only way it will work, is if ALLworking Nigerians and businesses pay tax. Thats how it works in other countries that have welfare systems. Buhari is not going to tell Nigerians that they will start paying tax. They wont vote for him.

He also will not go into details of how the gov will define "poorest families" and how the money will get to them. Will it be poorest in each state? and how will we get to know who those families are? Read about how other countries get to pay welfare to people. It is actually a system, with offices, employees, websites, job and training assistance.

They can verify when someone qualifies for it (through gov id number) and when they stop being eligable to recieve payments.

Do we even have any of this in place? How will this work in practice or is he just building a government funded aljimiri system?

Will he just trurn around and say the poorest region is in the north, therefore the 25 million poorest families must be there?

We do need a welfare system, but we dont have the system or the money to support one. Funds and effort should go into building one. I think people do need money, but most people are potential taxpayers and need a hand to do that.

Put that money into creating jobs, training and setting up viable businesses for the poor and disenfranchised. That would be money better spent.
God bless you.

I can bet you you have limitedd understanding of economic system. I laugh at you guys that are arguing blindly. Let me repeat myself, a welfarist state is 200% feasible as long as we have the right fiscal policy in place and it is followed to the letter.
Our dwindling national wealth and growing population can't sustain socialist welfarism

Do the maths yourself

Now Nigeria earns at most #5tr every year

Divide 5 000 000 000 000naira ÷ 170 000 000 people =# 29,411 approximately #30k

Each person #30 000 per year or #2500 per month

Can you survive on that amount.

I thot ur support for this lousy plan was jes partisan politics at play but now uve cleared al doubts.

Now juxtapose the eu members and nigeria.

Most EU members have a multi faceted economy and thrive in all sectors.
have a less corrupt civil service and accurate statistics for budgeting.

Have successfully implemented various subsidy programs without rattling the economy. Etc etc etc

Now look at ur country....
Its monolithic and is on the verge of loosing its major source of revenue, the oil wells are still same we've fed off since the 70s. Its depleting rapidly.

Your govt has failed woefully in implementing all subsidy programs eg petroleum, power, water, health, courier!!!! It goes on and on. Thanks to federal xter n quota systems the civil service is irredeemable. Now in our grounded situation and inability in funding recurrent expenditure, ure welcomn more subsidies. I mean uve nt realised it always ends up in the wrong benefactors pockets to the detriment of our economy.
