Two teachers. Same class. Same student. Same five minutes.

One was marking attendance from her phone in the staff room, where
the wifi actually reaches. The other was doing the same thing from
her classroom, where it does not, so her version was saving locally,
waiting to sync.

When her phone finally caught a signal twenty minutes later, both
versions of "who was present in JSS 2A today" tried to write to the
same record at the same time.

My database did not know what to do with that. Neither, for about
four hours, did I.

## The bug that felt impossible to explain

The support message came in simple enough. "Some students who were
marked present are now showing as absent." I opened the database. The
data looked fine. I asked the teacher to reload the app. Still wrong.
I checked the sync logs. Nothing had errored. Everything had,
technically, succeeded.

That was the part that got me. Nothing was broken, on paper. Two
valid writes had happened, one after the other, and the second one
had simply overwritten the first. Not a bug in the traditional sense.
A bug in the sense that I had never actually decided what should
happen when this occurs, so the database decided for me, which is
almost never the answer you want.

This is the part nobody tells you about offline-first apps. The hard
part is not saving data locally. Any app can do that. The hard part
is deciding what happens when two "locally saved" versions of the
truth meet each other again.

## Last write wins is a trap

The lazy fix is what's called "last write wins." Whichever save
happens last, chronologically, becomes the truth. It is the default
behavior of a lot of sync systems, including the one I was using,
and it is exactly what caused this mess.

The problem is that "last" according to a server timestamp has
nothing to do with what actually happened in the real world. The
teacher in the staff room marked attendance first, in real classroom
time. But her colleague's offline device happened to sync last, purely
because of when the wifi signal returned. So her later sync silently
erased the earlier, correct data.

The server was doing exactly what I told it to do. I had just never
told it the right thing.

## What I changed

I stopped treating attendance as one big record that gets overwritten,
and started treating each mark as an individual event with its own
timestamp and its own author. Instead of a single field saying "JSS
2A attendance equals this object," the system now stores a stream of
small facts: teacher A marked student X present at 8:03am, teacher B
marked student X present at 8:07am.

When two of these facts genuinely conflict, the system does not
silently pick a winner anymore. It keeps both, flags the conflict, and
surfaces it back to a human, in this case, the admin dashboard shows
"two entries recorded for this student today, please confirm," instead
of just quietly guessing.

It sounds like a small shift. Structurally, it changed everything
about how I think about state.

## The bigger lesson

Building for spotty connectivity is not really a networking problem.
It is a modeling problem. Once you accept that two people, or two
devices, might genuinely disagree with each other for a while before
they can compare notes, you stop trying to force one single, constantly
overwritten "truth," and you start designing for the fact that truth,
in a distributed system, is temporarily plural.

This is apparently a well known idea in distributed systems circles.
Nobody explained it to me that way. I had to break a school's
attendance records first.

I have a feeling this will not be the last time a conflict teaches me
something a tutorial never did. If you have run into your own version

Many private school owners don't realize how much they lose every term — not just in fees, but in parent trust — simply because attendance, grades, and communication are still managed on paper or scattered across WhatsApp groups.

Here are a few problems this causes that most schools don't think about until it's too late:
1. Attendance registers get lost or damaged
By the time WAEC/NECO registration or an inspection comes up, some schools cannot even produce a full term's attendance record. This affects accreditation in some cases.

2. Report cards take too long to prepare
Many schools spend a full week (sometimes more) compiling result sheets manually before they can release report cards. That is staff time that should be going into actual teaching.

3. Parents feel left out until something goes wrong
A parent in Lagos working a 9-5 job often has no idea their child missed school three times this month — until the term ends and questions start.

4. Fees tracking becomes chaotic
Ledgers and spreadsheets are prone to errors. Some schools genuinely don't know who has paid what until reconciliation at the end of term.

These problems are not because schools are careless. It is simply that the tools available — paper, Excel, WhatsApp groups — were never built for this job.

This is part of why digital school management systems are becoming more common across Nigeria, especially ones that work even when network is poor, since that is the reality in many areas.
