Benin – [b]There seems to be no end in sight to the crisis that is brewing between the Benin people and Ijaw over alleged plans by Ijaw traditional rulers in Bayelsa and Delta states to inaugurate Mr Edwin Ogunyenbo as the Pere of Olodiama Kingdom in Gelegele, Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State. Indication that the crisis is far from being resolved was given by one of the chiefs in the kingdom who crave to remain anyonymous. [/b]He disclosed to INDEPENDENT.that the Binis cannot mull over ceding the disputed area to the Ijaws. He explained that apart from subsisting courts judgements, which includes that of the Supreme Court, that there are other established and situated historical, spiritual and religious landmarks and monuments of extreme importance to the Benin people, which are to a large extent evidential to their ownership of the disputed area.

The traditional chief hinted that series of adjudication have trailed the disputed land. He said, “Let us start from the Court Judgments on Gelegele. The claim of the Ijaws over parts of Gelegele has been contested in Court up to the Supreme Court level where they lost the claim. This present state issue is only a strong-arm twisting to acquire Benin land, and it is simply unreasonable, mindlessly adventurous and our people will not let it happen.

He added noted that judgments of courts of competent jurisdiction on the ownership of Gelegele, and that one of such judgment was the one delivered in favour of Benin by Justice Ekeruche on December 22, 1978 at the High Court of Justice, Benin, in Suit No B/44/1970, expatiating that in the judgment, Justice Ekeruche held as follows:




“Finally, I enter judgment in this case as follows: for the avoidance of all doubts, argument or controversy. I hereby say unequivocally that Gelegele village and its environs and bushes are Benin land. They do not belong to the Ijaws of Gelegele as owners. The Ijaws are tenants of His Highness Akenzua II the Oba of Benin. Apart from above, the plaintiffs’ claims are dismissed in their entirety.

“Dissatisfied with the judgment, the Ijaws appealed to the Federal Court of Appeal, Benin. The Court of Appeal dismissed their appeal. The Court of Appeal judgment delivered was in favour of Benin by Justice Abdul Ganiyu Agbaje O.J. and two others on December 16, 1981. Still not satisfied, they went to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court also dismissed their appeal, upheld the judgment of the lower courts and awarded costs against them. Recorded as Suit SC.131/1982, the judgment was delivered by Muhamadu Lawai Uwais (CJN) and 4 others on August 19, 1983.

“Besides these court judgments, there are other evidences. These, he said include: – monuments and Historical Landmarks that Define Gele-Gele as Benin Land. Firstly, The Okun Shrine which was established by the Legendary Prince Ekaladerhan early in the 11th Century, AD. Secondly, the landmark monument in Ugbine marking the place where the British invaders first clashed with Oba Ovonramwen’s emissaries, which eventually led to the Benin Expedition of 1887. Thirdly, at Ughoton, Oba Ewuare 1 planted seven ‘U’ bolts (Aban Ihinron) to stop pursuing soldiers from getting to Benin. These seven Aban, planted in the 15th Century are still there. And fourthly, also at Ughoton is Oke n’alubode, the hill which was regarded as the exit route of departing souls of the dead by our people. These are very important historical and cultural monuments to the Benin people.

He buttressed that “In addition to all these, is the existence of four Traditional stools in the area and they are: The Okao of Gelegele, the Enogie of Obazuwa-Iko, The Iyase of Udo and the Enogie of Siloko.

The Benin Chief recalled that in the light of the request by the Ijaw Ethnic Nationality for additional states, a request that includes large portions of our land was vehemently resisted , we are sure that no Nigerian will expect our people to abandon four Traditional stools, our people and land in order to satisfy their yearning.

The Binis have been on their land as the most prominent Ethnic Nationality in the entire sub region before the Birth of Christ and that is why the earliest maps of our part of the world drawn in the 15th century, correctly designated most of West Africa as Benin and named the water front along West Africa coast as Bight of Benin. We cannot therefore, ignore the future and working towards its obliteration, God forbid! Those attacking us in our land are merely trying to rewrite history but this is impossible. The Benin nation will not allow it to happen” the chief who is the Odionwere of Benin declared.


It would be recalled that the above historical facts have become imperative for the fact that there has been an uneasy calm in the entire Benin Kingdom since Tuesday, November 14, 2017, the day one of the national daily newspapers, not INDEPENDENT, published a one page congratulatory advertisement, which was signed by HRM Oboro-Gbaraun II, Aketekpe, Agadagba, Pere of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Delta state.

As conveyed by the advertisement, “We, the crown and people of Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South- West Local Government Area of Delta State, truly and heartily felicitate with our brother, H.R.M. Godwin Oguyenbo, Alagbabenafa, Agadagba, Pere of Olodiama Kingdom, Ovia North=East Local Government of Edo State on the occasion of his coronation. The journey of a thousand kilometres, they say, starts with one step. His Royal Majesty has taken the first step into wealth and influence for the kingdom, in particular, and the Ijaw race in general. May his step well ordered into a prosperous reign”.

The following day, which was Wednesday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Omo N’ Oba, Comrade Desmond Agbama sent out invitations through SMS to all the media representatives in Benin City for a press briefing at the palace and was scheduled for 11am. But before 10.30 am, the palace hall was already filled with both journalists and chiefs; both invited and gatecrashers.


For the first time in the history of press conference at the Benin palace, the host chiefs arrived the venue earlier than the stipulated time, which was an indication of the criticality of the issue at stake.

At the press conference, the issue at stake was laid bare by the Iyase of Benin Kingdom, Chief Sam Igbe. He said, “gentlemen of the press, the attention of the palace of the Oba and his Chiefs was drawn to the congratulatory advert of Tuesday, 14th November, 2017 purporting to congratulate one Godwin Oguyenbo on his “coronation” as “Pere of Olodiama Kingdom” in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State.

“We want to state it categorically that Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State is under the authority of the Oba of Benin, who is the prescribed authority. We only have one Monarch in the whole of Edo South Senatorial District, that is the Oba.

“The title, “Pere of Olodiama Kingdom” does not exist. Gelegele is under the over lordship of the Oba of Benin and there cannot be two Monarchs in Benin.

“We would advise that anyone who recognize, purports to install or present himself to be installed as a traditional ruler outside the provision of the Edo State Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Edict of 1979, is in violation of the law, and would be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.

We are advising the Pere of Gbaramatu, Delta State, to avoid falling foul of the relevant laws of Edo State. The Ijaw people in Gelegele are free to live in the area just as any other ethnic groups that live in that axis. Any attempt to lay claim to non-existent title and community or village under any guise would be totally resisted
