Gov Diri Tasks Politicians, Others On Pan-Ijaw Unity, Interest ... As INC Insists Ijaw Nation Not Part Of Biafra, Oduduwa The Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, at the weekend, called on politicians from Ijaw extraction to defend the unity and interest of the Ijaw ethnic nationality at all times. Governor Diri, who made the call at a one-day Ijaw Unity and Sensitization Town Hall meeting organized by the Ijaw National Congress (INC), Central Zone, in Yenagoa, said the collective interest of the Ijaw nation was more important than the political ambition of any politician. Represented at the event by his Deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, the Governor reminded the politicians that they are first Ijaw people before becoming members of political parties He therefore insisted that the corporate interest of Ijawland must continue to supersede the personal interest of its sons and daughters anywhere in the world. Governor Diri noted that the existence and survival of the Ijaws as a people in Nigeria is being threatened, and urged all stakeholders of the Ijaw nation to stand up, speak and defend the truth. The Bayelsa Chief Executive, who decried the disrespectful attitude towards political and traditional rulers in Ijawland, however, called on community leaders to complement government's security efforts by promptly reportimg crime and criminality in their various domains to relevant authorities for action. Encouraging the youths to see dignity in labour as launch pad to success, Governor Diri advised them to venture into profitable and legitimate activities to become self-reliant and earn a decent living, rather than go cap in hands begging for handouts. His words: "I want to encourage our politicians to believe, play and remember that, first of all, we are Ijaw people before we became . members of our various political parties. We have to take this seriously. "It is only then, we can protect the Ijaw interest and not our partisan interest because we cannot work within the remits of our political interests to achieve our collective goal as a people. "The Ijaw struggle is like the community goat that everybody is expected to feed. If it comes to my doorpost, I feed it. If it comes to yours, you also feed it. "It is by so doing that the goat will be fattened enough to give birth to healthy kids to prosper the community. We must in the spirit of protecting the Ijaw integrity and pushing the Ijaw agenda, tell ourselves the truth "To our traditional rulers, we must report crime and criminality in our domains to relevant authorities for action. For our youths, a hero is not the one who kills his brother. But one who faces and conquers external aggressors." In his address, the President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), Professor Benjamin Okaba, explained that the sensitization meeting of stakeholders from the Central Zone had been necessitated by an existential threat to the legitimate interest and resources of the Ijaw nation. According to the INC top brass, the Ijaw people had never been and would not be part of any Biafra or Oduduwa Republic, warning that the Ijaws have what it takes to stand as a country in the event of any breakup of Nigeria. In his paper, "Nigerian Security Situation and the Ijaw Nation", King Bubaraye Dakolo, attributed the high level of insecurity in all parts of the country, including Ijawland to the abysmal failure of the current All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government. King Dakolo, who is the Ibenanaowei of Ekpetiama Kingdom, and Chairman of the Bayelsa State Traditional Rulers Council, however, emphasised that the Ijaws are being undermined because of their lack of unity in projecting the overriding interest of the Ijaw nation. Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman of the INC, Central Zone, Dr Doodei Week, said the meeting was convened to bring critical stakeholders together to brainstorm on contemporary issues bordering on the unity, security and prosperity of Ijawland. He said the meeting would also provide an opportunity to sensitize the Ijaw people on the planned digital national population census, arguing that the current population figures did not reflect the true population of the Ijaws, being the fourth largest ethnic group in Nigeria. |
Gov. Diri approves increment of subvention to tertiary institutions ...Commends NLC, ASUU, Student union for their peaceful protest ... says Govt paying Bayelsa ASUU salaries despite strike First, these are not happy moments for us in government, particularly your government of prosperity. There cannot be prosperity when our universities are shut down for over five months, therefore, I like to identify with you and assure you that your message will be sent to the presidency, and we will do that both by writing and every other means that is legitimate to ensure that this problem between the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Federal Government is resolved. I'll like to commend your very peaceful and exemplary nature in this protest. You have been very lawful in your protest, and please, for us to make Bayelsa State stand tall in the committee of States, this is what we will need Our students must go back to learn, and that is why we have decided as a government to invite ASUU during this strike, and we had a very robust meeting with the leadership in Bayelsa State. In our meeting, we resolved that, even though there was a solidarity strike from Bayelsa State, we will continue to pay their salaries, and we have kept that promise up until today. So, my dear brothers and sisters, we cannot allow our educational system to die. Let me use this opportunity to inform you that, yes, we have some local ASUU issues, I did set up a committee to resolve those matters, and the committee has been working. There has been an agreement between ASUU local and the State government, and as we speak, I have approved an increase in the subvention to higher institutions." ..... Gov. Diri Warns Youths Against Acts Capable of Demarketing Bayelsa Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has cautioned youths to desist from activities that are capable of demarketing and scaring away investors from the state. Senator Diri gave the warning on Wednesday during the 55th state executive council meeting at the Executive Chambers in Government House, Yenagoa. The Governor, who was represented by his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, condemned the frequent protest by youths over matters that can be resolved amicably. According to him, violent confrontation had not yielded sustainable results, and therefore, stressed the need for youths to intellectually engage multinational companies to achieve their set goals. He urged revenue collectors and policemen at the entry points of the state to be friendly as any hostile attitude on their part could discourage transporters and other investors from coming into the state. The Bayelsa helmsman, noted that although the state is replete with abundant potentialities for growth and development, it is also in dire need for investors to drive the local economy. Emphasising that government's effort alone cannot bring about development in any state, Governor' Diri called on the youths to be law abiding and cooperate with his administration to attract investors that would contribute to employment and wealth creation. His words, "I want to convey the disgust of government to our youths in regards to the frequency with which they take to the streets to protest. We believe protests should be the last resort. "The frequency of our youths taking to the streets is painting the image of our state in negative light. We need to desist from attitudes that try to scare off investors from our state. "We want to encourage our youths to be peaceful and law abiding so that our state will be seen as investor-friendly. They should not drive us to the point where we will begin to see them as part of those who are making deliberate, wicked efforts to demarket our state," he warned. While congratulating members of the judiciary on the commencement of their new legal year, Governor Diri stated that his administration is building on the foundation already laid by its predecessor to strengthen the autonomy of the state judiciary. The Governor also called on the judiciary to live up to the people's expectation as the beacon of hope and moderator of democracy by dispensing justice without bias. He urged the Chief Judge of the state to collaborate with other agencies of government to provide access to justice for the people through the establishment of more customary courts in the rural areas. WE ARE IN BAYELSA FOR MASSIVE AQUACULTURE INVESTMENTS- TOP EUROPEAN INVESTOR A top European investor, Mr. Georgious Goulas of the African Atlantic Gulf of Guinea Fisheries (AAGGF) has said that the European consortium is bringing massive investments into Bayelsa State to build a robust agro-and maritime economy that will generate over 4,000 job opportunities in the State. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the Bayelsa State Government and the AAGGF for a massive aquaculture project that include setting up of 300-hectares offshore aquaculture farm, 20,000-metric tonnes capacity fish processing plant and a boat building yard across the three senatorial districts of Bayelsa State. The team from Greece and their Nigerian representatives were in Bayelsa State for a 3-day tour of potential project sites and visited different river and sea sides at Swali, Ox-bow lake in Yenagoa, River Nun by Sampou, Agudama-Ekpetiama, Nembe, Twon Brass and Okpoama beach earmarked for the project. The inspection of the various locations followed the recent visit by Senator Douye Diri, Governor of Bayelsa State to Greece to see and appreciate the various aquaculture and maritime projects to be replicated on Bayelsa soil and water. Mr. Goulas, who led the team from Greece and spoke through an interpreter said he was excited that the Bayelsa environment was most suited for the massive fisheries business and that such a project would have a value chain effect to stir ambitious economic activities for the people. “I believe that such a project will have a value chain effect. Definitely, it will bring development into the society, increase the value and give more economical activities to the indigenes. Which in turn will raise their standard of living overtime. And it can only keep increasing, not decreasing because there is the issue of food security worldwide, so food will always be required. We are glad to be part of this new opportunity and we are here for real investment”, he stated. Also, the Head of the Lead Consultant to AAGGF, Prince Patrick Osobase, said the Greek delegation which included their technical team had been impressed by the potentialities of the various locations for the kick-off of the agricultural revolution to diversify Bayelsa’s economy and that the people of Bayelsa State stand to benefit immensely from the investment. “We are the lead consultant for this project. Well, we have been very impressed. We have done multiple visits to Bayelsa State. We have now brought in the technical team to confirm information we earlier provided them. But more than aquaculture, we are going to be building vessels here in Bayelsa State. We are going to have a boat yard that will produce 100 vessels for this project. We are also going to have a processing plant, where we are going to process the fishes catch and add value. So it’s not just aquaculture, its boat building. There is processing, there’s distribution. It’s a complete industry”, Osobase stated. The Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr. David Alagoa, after leading his guests to various sites told newsmen that Bayelsans and Nigerians were waiting for the take-off of this massive investment that will provide direct training to 2,500 young Bayelsans and create about 4,000 jobs. When asked how ready the State is for this multi-billion naira project, Alagoa said, “Well, when you say ready, I will say we are ready because that is the will of His Excellency, the Governor. And as you know, the Governor is fully behind this. Now the whole process of being ready in terms of the whole state, it takes a while. It’s in stages. We have been to various ministries in the federal government. We have been to various departments and we have set up steering committees within the State. And that steering committee is working. It’s going to have to go to all stakeholders so that everybody is aware of what is happening. And even the communities, we have to come, let them be aware of what is happening. So there’s that whole process, I will say it has started. It’s a process. We have signed an MOU. From the MOU, we are going to sign the main agreement. And that’s going to happen very soon.” Alagoa is very upbeat about the project that will create impact in every constituency as directed by the Governor and gave the assurance that the State Government is committed to the timely commencement of this massive aquaculture project. “Now when that happens, we’re going to start mobilizing expatriates. Then they are going to be teaching the students and then we’re going to be building the shipyard and we’re going to be employing people. You will see first and foremost, an aquaculture facility set up in this ocean somewhere. You are going to see fish cages as we have, we went and we’ve verified in Greece. We are going to start with that because they are easiest to set up but it takes a long time to mature. So we will start with that. As that is happening, we are training the youths. We are going to train 2500 youths. His Excellency is particularly committed to every constituency being part of this process. So it’s not as if because you are far away, you will not gain. No! He says we are going to employ people from every constituency in the State. You can see that type of commitment. So by the time that happens, wow! You will see a lot of changes. So everybody, by the time you take 50, 70, 30 in every constituency, you will see how many people to touch. Because you touch one person, you are touching 15 people. So that’s the type of impact that it’s going to have”, Alagoa said. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=4320696468028218&id=100002637227885&sfnsn=scwspwa&funlid=TTtVKAQiSeWE13JR
