Why OKRs fail even when the goals look good Writing good OKRs is not the same as running them A well-crafted OKR document doesn't do anything on its own. Leaders fall into this trap constantly — they think defining the destination creates the momentum to get there. It doesn't. Actually running OKRs means pulling the data, sitting with uncomfortable numbers, and being willing to shift resources mid-quarter when something isn't working. What normally disappears after the planning workshop The energy and clarity from a kickoff meeting have a half-life of about 48 hours. The moment people are back at their desks, the urgent swallows the important. Without something that actually enforces follow-through, the commitments made in that room evaporate into the background noise of regular work. Why failure usually begins before the quarter-end result appears Failed OKRs don't announce themselves on the last day of the quarter — they quietly die weeks earlier. In week three, a manager skips a check-in. In week five, a metric flatlines and nobody says anything. By the time the quarter closes, you're not getting a results report. You're reading a post-mortem. The difference between a bad OKR and a badly managed OKR A bad OKR is pointed at the wrong thing — like obsessing over a feature users barely touch. A badly managed OKR is pointed at exactly the right thing, but nobody actually holds it accountable. If you're trying to grow revenue but the sales director never checks pipeline velocity against that target in weekly meetings, the framework has already broken down, regardless of how good the goal looks on paper. |
