Some of the affected women shared their stories with Good Health Weekly, during a Dialogue on Violence Against Women and Girls Living with HIV in Lagos.

The programme was organised by Positive Action for Treatment Access, PATA, in collaboration with Women Advocate Research and Documentation Center, WARDC. Excerpts:

IN most climes, marriage is for better for worse. But how practical is this in reality? This is the pertinent question many women such as Deborah and Janet who are living with HIV are begging for an answer. “My life has experienced enough violence even before I was diagnosed HIV positive but my new status escalated the already ugly situation,” Deborah said amidst tears. Although, Deborah’s first marriage was characterised by violence, the discovery of her HIV status worsened the situation and ultimately cause her marriage to hit the rocks. “There was so much intimidation and at the end of the day we just had to go our separate ways.” Like the typical Nigerian woman that would not want her marriage to break, initially, Deborah was not ready to leave her matrimonial home.

She wasn’t willing to separate for fear of discrimination and stigmatisation particularly from society, family and religious groups who most times are judgemental. “I am so happy that I left t and now I can confidently speak out.

If you don’t take up that challenge, you cannot achieve anything in life, you will die of stigma and discrimination. I’m happy that I left the marriage and became an advocate for the rights of women living with HIV in Lagos state,” she said, adding that she later got married to another man who though negative is very supportive.

Today, Deborah who is so passionate about living positively with HIV is now an advocate for HIV/AIDS in Lagos State. Through her horrible experiences, she is now advocating for other women facing same similar challenges. Deborah is not alone, Janet, who also suffered separation in marriage due to her status, has been living with HIV for 11 years.

Fondly call ‘old virus’ by her fellow advocates, Janet said her marriage wasn’t violent but the separation was as a result of HIV status. She narrated the story of another woman living with HIVwho could not boldly tell her story. The woman granted her permission through a written note. She remarked that stories abound about several women living with HIV who are facing unprintable situations, with challenges rangeing from discrimination, stigmatisation and separation and most cases divorce threats from their husbands and families. President Muhammadu Buhari said his government had given anticipatory approval for the withdrawal of $496 million from the Excess Crude Account and transferred it to the U.S. Treasury in February 2018 without recourse to the National Assembly.

Switzerland said it has returned all the money kept in the country by late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, with $1.5 million interest.

Amb. Pio Wennubst, Assistant Director-General and Head, Global Cooperation Department, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, told the Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria in New York.

Wennubst said Switzerland returned about $322.5 million(N116.11 billion) to the Federal Government. According to him, the original amount was $321 million. The Federal Government had announced receipt of $322.51 million from the Swiss government as part of the looted funds recovered from the late former Head of State. Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, through her Special Adviser, Media and Communications, Oluyinka Akintunde, had confirmed the receipt of money from Switzerland. Akintunde said: “We state that $322,515,931.83 (N116,105,735,458.80) was received into a Special Account in the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, on December 18, 2017, from the Swiss government.” Confirming this, Wennubst said: “We returned N321 million dollars including the interests. The Catholic Diocese of Makurdi has confirmed the killing of two of its priests, Rev Fathers Joseph Gor and Felix Tyolaha, in an early hour attack on St Ignatius Quasi Parish, Ukpor, Mbalom in Gwer West Local Government Council of Benue.

A statement by its Director of Communications, Rev Fr Moses Iorapuu, said that the attacks were perpetrated by herdsmen who stormed the Mbalom community and killed the two priests during the morning mass at the church.
The Diocese expressed regret at the nonchalant attitude of the security agencies in containing the killings.

It said the herdsmen, who stormed the community, burnt down houses, destroyed crops and killed people.

Wanted Senator Dino Melaye reported that he was stopped from boarding a flight to Morocco this morning, after checking in.

The voluble Senator who had been declared wanted by the Nigerian police for alleged arming of some thugs posted the information on his Instagram and Twitter accounts this morning.

He said it was an arrest.

The police and DSS have not confirmed the veracity of the claim.

“Stopped from traveling and under arrest. No retreat no surrender. Talk we must”, Dino said on both his Instagram and Twitter accounts.

“I have just been arrested at the international wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe airport on my way to Morocco for an official engagement sponsored by the Federal Govt after checking in”, his earlier tweet read.
