The councillors made this known during a strategic gathering held in Obudu on Wednesday, with participants drawn from the five local government areas in the district. Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Hon. Simon Oko commended the former governor for his consistent engagement with grassroots leaders and his recognition of their role in shaping the state’s political structure. He described Ayade’s tenure as transformative, noting that many current community leaders and political figures rose through the ranks during his administration. According to him, the councillors remain committed to supporting Ayade’s ambition, should the party grant him the ticket. He further noted that if the party leadership gives him the ticket as the APC senatorial flag bearer for the Northern Senatorial District, they will overwhelmingly support him, emphasizing that the party is supreme. Also speaking, the Deputy Leader of the Bekwarra Legislative Council, Hon. Odey, alongside other representatives from various local government areas, shared testimonials highlighting what they described as Ayade’s lasting political legacy across the northern region. They emphasized that the former governor’s contributions continue to resonate with the people, reinforcing their collective decision to rally behind him. Hon. Odey further praised the move and urged fellow councillors to remain united while awaiting the official position of the party. He stressed that party supremacy must guide all political actions, calling for patience and discipline among stakeholders. The councillors affirmed their readiness to mobilize support across their communities, stressing that their backing reflects both loyalty and a shared vision for continued development in the district. Responding on behalf of Ayade, Comrade Linus Ibli expressed gratitude to the councillors for their solidarity and commitment to the growth of the All Progressives Congress. Ibli, however, cautioned that the meeting should not be interpreted as a formal endorsement, explaining that the party is yet to issue directives regarding the 2027 elections. He urged the councillors to remain active and patient as the political process unfolds. He assured the gathering that their message of support would be conveyed to Ayade, describing the development as a significant boost to the former governor’s political prospects. Debunking rumours of endorsing another senatorial aspirant, Hon. Ade John (Bishiri North), Majority Leader; Hon. Godwin Odey (Garkim Ward), Deputy Leader; and Hon. Francis Upan (Begiadaing Ward), Deputy Chief Whip, emphasized that their actions remain guided by party directives and internal consultations. They noted that any official endorsement would be made collectively and in line with the party’s position, stressing that the circulating claims are false and intended to cause division. Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission has formally received the final report of the Federal Government’s Inter-Agency Committee on Nigeria’s Oil-Producing States, with Cross River State prominently projected to be re-listed as an oil-producing state. The submission, made on Friday, February 13, 2026, at about 3:00 pm, marks what observers describe as a watershed moment in Nigeria’s fiscal federalism architecture and a potential economic renaissance for Cross River. The report, covering the 2017–2025 nationwide verification of crude oil and gas coordinates, was presented to the Chairman of RMAFC, Mr. M. B. Shehu, by 10 members of the 14-man committee. The exercise, which ran from August 2025 to February 2026, involved extensive field verification, technical reconciliation of state submissions, and a final plenary plotting of coordinates at RMAFC headquarters between January 24 and 31, 2026. An independent media source monitoring proceedings at the Chairman’s office confirmed the submission and described it as “the most comprehensive coordinate verification undertaken in recent years.” Commending the committee, Mr. Shehu reportedly described the assignment as “rigorous, technical and nationally significant,” adding that the painstaking verification of over 1,000 crude oil and gas coordinates across Nigeria demonstrated the Federal Government’s commitment to transparency and accuracy in revenue attribution. “This was not a desk exercise,” he was quoted as saying. “It involved physical verification, hydrographic validation, boundary reconciliation and security-backed confirmations across multiple states.” The committee, according to an insider source, "reflected a broad institutional collaboration. It comprised representatives from RMAFC, the National Boundary Commission (NBC), the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation (OSGoF), the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), the Nigerian Hydrographic Agency, and relevant security agencies. Their mandate was clear: scientifically determine the precise location of oil and gas assets within Nigeria’s onshore and offshore boundaries." Over a six-month period, the team visited more than 12 states, including Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Ondo, Imo, Anambra, Abia and Cross River. In the process, they verified over 1,000 new crude oil and gas coordinates based on confirmed onshore and offshore reservoir data. Findings from the report indicate that nearly all oil-producing states stand to benefit from new oil well attributions arising from the verified coordinates. Several longstanding boundary overlaps were resolved through shared attributions, including Rivers–Akwa Ibom, Delta–Edo, Delta–Ondo, Imo–Rivers, Imo–Anambra and Akwa Ibom–Cross River. Sources familiar with the deliberations disclosed that “where geological reservoirs straddle boundaries, equity and technical evidence guided shared attributions rather than political considerations.” Significantly for Cross River, technical projections in the report place the state in a strong position to regain oil-producing status with more than 100 producing oil wells from verified onshore and offshore reservoir coordinates—particularly from OML 114 located within its maritime territory. For the first time since 2008, Cross River is projected to be officially enlisted again as an oil-producing state, a development widely seen as vindication of years of advocacy and scientific revalidation. Although Cross River submitted the highest number of surface coordinates—over 245—the implications of the 2012 Supreme Court judgment are expected to retain 76 oil wells in Akwa Ibom State pending further judicial interpretation. Even with these deductions, sources close to the verification process maintain that Cross River’s geological evidence was “compelling, empirical and beyond reasonable doubt.” One senior official was quoted as saying, “The science speaks for itself. The reservoirs do not lie. The coordinates verified clearly establish Cross River’s producing status.” An Abuja-based fiscal expert noted, “is to separate administrative attribution from geological reality, and Cross River emerges strongly from that distinction.” He noted that in May 2024, Cross River had earlier benefited from an Inter-Agency Committee report attributing 67 oil wells from OML 114 to the state, though implementation did not follow at the time. Fast forward to 2025, the state reportedly adopted a more robust scientific and geological framework, reinforcing its submissions with hydrographic and reservoir data that proved decisive in the latest verification. The RMAFC Chairman is expecting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's assent for implementation of Inter Agency Technical Committee (IATC). Upon presidential approval for implementation, the RMAFC Board of Commissioners will convene a plenary session to approve the operational framework for implementing the new attributions and updating Nigeria’s official list of oil-producing states. For Cross River, stakeholders say the development represents not merely administrative recognition, but “a restoration of economic justice, constitutional equity and historical truth.”

Happy New Month, my dear Cross Riverians. Let me begin with a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has reached out with warm new month wishes, priceless prayers, and goodwill. Your love means so much to me, and I truly do not take it for granted. As we step into this new month, I pray for continuous unity, peace, and harmonious coexistence in Cross River State and in Nigeria at large. I give all glory to God Almighty for His mercy and faithfulness upon my life. My years have been eventful and meaningful. My country has been good to me, and my state has been good to me, supporting a woman to contest and win four elections. I pray that, as long as it pleases God, He will continue to grant me strength, good health, continuous peace, and happiness. I remain politically active, but I am not in contest or competition with anyone. I humbly appeal to everyone, in the spirit of love and understanding, to allow me to enjoy this phase of my life in peace, happiness, and fulfilment. I remain available to guide, mentor, and support the next generation, because leadership must continue, and the future must be strengthened. I also appeal for more leadership opportunities for the next generation of young female leaders. As I prepare for my 80th birthday, which will be a great opportunity to thank God and also appreciate all of you who contributed to the emergence of Senator Florence Ita-Giwa, from my election to the House of Representatives, to my nomination as a member of the Constitutional Conference and the National Conference, to the opportunity to serve in the Devolution of Powers Committee; to winning elections into the Nigerian Senate twice, where I served as Deputy Senate Minority Leader; and for successfully serving two Nigerian Presidents as Special Adviser on National Assembly Matters. I will also be thanking God for my service as a Director at the Nigerian Ports Authority, and now as Chairman of the Governing Council of a fast-growing Nigerian Polytechnic. I am also deeply grateful to have been part of the success of the “Back to South” actualisation and the seamless transition embraced by Cross Riverians, which has continued to strengthen peaceful coexistence and unity across our dear state. This milestone did not only restore balance, but brought our Governor, Our Sweet Prince, Gov. Bassey Otu who has brought renewed confidence, purpose, and a fresh atmosphere of sweetness, love, harmony, and progress in Cross River State. I am equally proud of the success and sustainability of the biggest street party in Africa, the Calabar Carnival, which has remained a powerful symbol of our cultural pride. It is not just about dance and celebration, but a unique platform that interprets contemporary global issues through creative expression, music, colour, and costume, showcasing Cross River State to the world in an exceptional way. Due to some unforeseen circumstances, I have decided to postpone my 80th birthday celebration to the first week of April. Meanwhile, from about the 19th of February, I plan to commence a Mentoring Programme for the next generation, and I will also be available for any group that may need my appearance or support. I strongly believe that the greatest legacy is not only what we achieve, but the people we raise to achieve even greater things. The underlisted are members of my contact committee: Hon. Hon. (Dr.) Stella Oreme Odey-Ekpo: a proven humanitarian, a tireless grassroots champion, and the natural choice for Ogoja/Yala in 2027 By: Egbelo Edward Hon. (Dr.) Stella Oreme Odey-Ekpo is a woman whose life’s work speaks far louder than words, a humanitarian whose compassion is practical, consistent, and deeply rooted in genuine concern for people. From her early years in public service to her present national appointment, she has shown an unwavering dedication to humanity, carrying her community along with her in ways that mark her out as eminently qualified to represent Ogoja/Yala Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. As Commissioner for Women Affairs in Cross River State, she championed empowerment programs that gave vulnerable women and widows a real chance to build livelihoods, providing starter packs and skill acquisition opportunities that restored dignity and independence. Her tenure as Commissioner for Local Government Affairs further showcased her administrative competence, as she worked closely with councils to strengthen development at the grassroots, understanding firsthand the challenges and opportunities that communities face. These roles gave her rare insight into governance, budgeting, and delivery skills that will be valuable in federal representation. What truly distinguishes Stella Odey-Ekpo, however, is her approach to humanitarianism. She has never been content with lofty statements. She delivers tangible interventions that meet people’s needs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, while many leaders limited themselves to press releases, she toured her ward, distributing fertilizers, agrochemicals, face masks, hand sanitisers, and financial assistance to farmers and families. She understood that hunger and hardship were the most immediate threats her people faced, and she met them with practical solutions that cut across party lines and reached ordinary households. These are not acts of showmanship but evidence of a leader whose first instinct is to care. In her public messages during festivities, she has always called for unity, harmony, and collective responsibility for one another’s wellbeing, reminding our people that progress can only come through peace and shared purpose. Whether through advocacy, empowerment, or relief interventions, her actions consistently reveal a woman who sees leadership as service and humanity as her guiding principle. Today, as a Federal Commissioner representing Cross River State in the Federal Character Commission, she sits at the heart of national governance, entrusted with ensuring equity and fairness in federal appointments. That appointment is not just a recognition of her competence but a validation of her integrity and trustworthiness at the highest level. It also gives her the networks, visibility, and influence to ensure that the voices of Ogoja and Yala are heard in Abuja and that development resources flow back home. For the people of Ogoja/Yala, the choice before them is not just about sending another politician to the National Assembly, it is about choosing someone with the proven capacity to listen, to act, and to deliver. Stella Oreme Odey-Ekpo has lived a life of service that blends compassion with competence. She has shown that she understands the struggles of ordinary farmers, the aspirations of women, the frustrations of youths, and the hopes of entire communities. She has demonstrated, in role after role, that she is not detached from her people but embedded in their daily realities. If representation is about carrying the burdens of the people into the halls of power, then Stella Oreme Odey-Ekpo has already been doing just that. Her humanitarian record, her administrative experience, her grassroots touch, and her national influence make her more than qualified, they make her the natural and best choice to speak for Ogoja/Yala in the House of Representatives come 2027.

By Jesam Omini This morning, I woke up to a series of sponsored publications, all aimed at tarnishing the reputation of a man many have described as one of the young beacons of hope in Cross River State: Hon. Oden Ewa. In a society like ours, such attacks are sadly predictable and common in the political space. In Cross River State today, mediocrity often takes center stage, while genuine hard work and impact are relegated to the background and dismissed as atypical. Hon. Oden Ewa stands in stark contrast to this trend. He embodies the spirit of resilience and dedication, carving out a legacy in the political landscape through sheer determination and purpose. But Oden isn’t just another political figure navigating the corridors of power. He’s a man on a mission—a leader creating a ripple effect of transformation among young minds. His focus isn’t on fleeting gestures or temporary applause; instead, he is deeply invested in building a future where young people are empowered to engage in governance and advocacy. His impact stems not from a need for recognition or reward but from an innate passion to leave lasting footprints wherever he treads. So, what is Oden’s sin? His "sin" is daring to rise above the average. In a political space where many leaders prefer occasional handouts for applause, Oden chooses a different path—he listens, engages, builds, empowers, and nurtures young people for the greater good of their communities and the nation at large. This approach not only sets him apart but also threatens the status quo of access and privilege. Why would anyone feel uneasy about Oden excelling in his role as Commissioner? Instead of channeling their energy toward personal growth or serving their constituents, some leaders, plagued by guilt over their own inefficiencies, have resorted to targeting a man whose only "crime" is working hard to make a difference. If their conscience troubles them, the solution is clear: seek forgiveness, engage stakeholders and youths, and work diligently to improve their performance. Misplaced frustration, priorities, and envy should not be directed at someone who is simply fulfilling his duty with excellence. Dialogue and collaboration should be encouraged. Is it a crime for a young man to rise against the odds? Is it wrong for someone to be passionately invested in the development of his community? Is it sinful to be intentional about uplifting the less privileged? The goodwill Oden enjoys is not by accident—it is a result of his pure heart and genuine commitment to making a difference. Those who feel threatened should look inward and re-evaluate their priorities. Hon. Oden Ewa is a leader whose integrity and passion speak louder than any attempt to discredit him. The facts speak for themselves—it is not by nomination or imposition. In a world that desperately needs more selfless leaders, Oden Ewa will continue to stand tall—a shining light reminding us all that true leadership lies in the impact, engagement, and contributions we make, not in the titles we hold.

The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP in the last presidential election, Adewole Adebayo has expressed concern over the ongoing strike by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU and the Non-academic Staff Union of Educational and Allied Institutions, NASU. Adebayo, in a press statement issued on his behalf by his Media Advisor, Chidi Onyemaizu, lamented the incessant disruption of academic activities in the institutions of higher learning in the country, saying the situation casts a slur on Nigeria's image and puts a disquieting question mark on the quality of graduates produced by the institutions. The former presidential hopeful urged the Tinubu led administration to prioritise education over politics and political patronage by restoring enduring industrial peace in the country's ivory towers. "I'm of the opinion that restoring enduring industrial harmony in our ivory towers is no rocket science, it is doable and it is something that can be done if only the President can prioritise education over politics and political patronage by giving adequate funding to the universities and reaching a just and amicable settlement with the restive teaching and non teaching labour unions. "The ongoing strike by non-teaching staff of universities is an embarrassment and an avoidable disruption; it would have been avoided if the government had not chosen to pay lips service to the welfare of University workers", Adebayo said in the statement. Continuing, the SDP chieftain noted that "SSANU and NASU are not asking for anything outside their legitimate earnings. If the Tinubu administration can pacify and patronize political allies and hangers on by the way of maintaining an over bloated cabinet at the expense of our common patrimony, I see no reason it cannot effortlessly fulfil its agreement with members of SSANU and NASU and pay them their withheld salaries. "Beyond SSANU and NASU, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has also been hinting about another round of strike, this speaks to a failed and decaying system. "We cannot continue to be a nation that commits a huge part of its financial resources to servicing politicians and their extravagant lifestyles while neglecting the very core of human capital development- the University system" Adebayo advocated for increased budgetary allocation to the education sector and "or on the alternative, like the judiciary and the National Assembly, funding of the universities, including staff salaries should be placed on the first line charge" "As a developing country, adequate funding for our university education should at all times take precedence over servicing of political office holders", Adebayo added.

Encouraging Girl Child participation in Leadership and Governance By Martha U. Agba Supporting a girl child without ensuring she has access to positions of power or influence contradicts the very purpose of that support. Here's why it's crucial to not only support girls but also provide them opportunities for leadership: 1. **Empowerment Through Opportunity**: Supporting a girl child's education, skills development, and well-being is meant to empower her to achieve her potential. Without access to positions of influence, that support is incomplete, as it limits her ability to use her knowledge and skills for personal and societal progress. 2. **Breaking the Cycle of Inequality**: Supporting girls but denying them positions of authority perpetuates the same cycle of gender inequality. True support means giving them the chance to contribute meaningfully to society, especially in leadership roles where they can influence policy and create systemic change. 3. **Utilizing Their Full Potential**: Girls, when educated and empowered, have the potential to be exceptional leaders. Denying them leadership roles wastes their talents and underutilizes half of the population’s potential, which could drive innovation, progress, and growth in society. 4. **Achieving Gender Parity**: Support without access to positions means girls will continue to face glass ceilings in politics, business, and other fields. To achieve true gender parity, support must extend to giving them equal opportunities in leadership and decision-making. 5. **Long-Term Impact**: The true impact of supporting girls is realized when they are given positions where they can influence the next generation, ensuring that future girls benefit from better policies and role models. Without positions of power, their ability to effect long-term change is limited. 6. **Symbolic and Practical Change**: When girls are supported and then allowed into positions of power, they become living symbols of the possibility of equality and progress. They can challenge stereotypes and shift societal expectations about what women can achieve. Supporting a girl child without providing her with positions of influence is an incomplete effort. Real support ensures that she not only grows but also has a voice and space to lead in shaping her future and society's progress.

Leadership, as defined by renowned American scholar Warren G. Bennis, is the ability to translate vision into reality. Yet, in many societies, particularly ours, leadership often falters due to poor choices made on the basis of sentiments rather than merit. This has led to a persistent leadership crisis at various levels of government. The need to address this is urgent, and the time for change is now. One individual rising to the occasion is Martha Agba, a dynamic young leader poised to drive positive transformation in Obudu Local Government Area. Martha has demonstrated the necessary experience, knowledge, and leadership qualities to steer a ship burdened with challenges towards a more prosperous future. Last weekend, Martha returned to her roots, visiting her community of Kubbong-Bette in Obudu. During her visit, she engaged directly with her people, taking time to listen to their concerns and understand their needs. It was a powerful moment, as residents—young and old alike—spoke to Martha with the confidence that she could represent their interests. The people saw in her a guiding light, someone who would carry their concerns and aspirations to those in positions of authority. From their requests for basic needs like medical supplies for the elderly to school essentials for the children, Martha listened with empathy and commitment, showing herself to be a leader ready to champion their cause. Her responses were not mere political promises but solutions grounded in reality. Where she could, Martha provided immediate assistance; where larger structural support was needed, she outlined her plans to bring those issues to the attention of the relevant authorities. The joy and admiration in the community were palpable, as they saw in Martha a leader who not only heard them but understood their struggles and had the drive to make things better. Martha’s journey over the weekend didn’t stop at Kubbong-Bette. She continued her mission by visiting the Obudu Traditional Rulers Council, where she delivered her vision for the future of the local government. The atmosphere was respectful and attentive as Martha spoke before the Paramount Ruler of Obudu, Chief Felix Ugwudali, and the council of chiefs. Her words carried the weight of a leader committed to change, and her ideas on how to unlock Obudu’s potential resonated deeply with the elders. They listened as she laid out practical steps for the development of the region, speaking with the wisdom and clarity of someone fully prepared for the task ahead. Martha’s engagements with traditional rulers, community members, party leaders, and stakeholders throughout her tour of Obudu were marked by one consistent theme—progress. Her message was focused on tangible solutions to longstanding problems, and her plan for Obudu is nothing short of visionary. Martha's goal is to uplift the local government area by addressing key issues such as infrastructure development, youth empowerment, healthcare, and agricultural growth, all while fostering a strong sense of community and accountability. In a political landscape often clouded by rhetoric and empty promises, Martha stands out as a candidate who speaks the language of change and action. Her candidacy represents a breath of fresh air in Obudu’s political scene. She is young, vibrant, and armed with both local and international exposure, making her uniquely equipped to lead the region forward. Her leadership journey is not a recent development. Martha has been celebrated for her contributions to society, both at home and abroad. Her experiences in governance and community development, combined with her passion for progress, have earned her a reputation as a capable and trustworthy leader. These qualities are not only recognized by her supporters in Obudu but also by those in wider political and social circles. Among all the individuals who have expressed interest in leading Obudu Local Government, Martha Agba clearly possesses the most compelling credentials. She has proven her ability to listen, understand, and act on behalf of her people. More importantly, she has shown that she is not driven by personal gain but by a genuine desire to see her community thrive. As the race for the chairmanship of Obudu Local Government Area heats up, Martha’s widespread acceptability is a testament to her preparedness and leadership potential. She is the embodiment of the new generation of Nigerian leaders—those who are ready to step up, not because they seek power, but because they believe in the power of service. In Martha, the people of Obudu have found a leader they can trust. As she continues to make her case across various platforms, it becomes increasingly clear that she is the right choice for the future of the local government. Her candidacy offers a beacon of hope in a time when real, effective leadership is needed more than ever. The journey ahead may be challenging, but with Martha Agba at the helm, Obudu can look forward to a future defined by progress, unity, and prosperity.

DEAD PARTY WALKING: PDP'S DESPERATE ATTEMPT TO REGAIN RELEVANCE IN CROSS RIVER By Linus Obogo It is gladdening to note that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has finally woken up from the dead after a lengthy period of lying in state, following its total trouncing at the 2023 governorship election. As an opposition party, the PDP entombed itself immediately it lost the governorship to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state. Even then it is often held that while the dead cannot see, it does hear. It is on this score that one wonders why the party did not advise itself against pushing out the puerile issues raised in its tenuously yoked statement on Friday. If the party cannot see what the Sweet Prince is doing to advance development in the state, is it that it is also deaf to hear the testimony of Cross Riverians? After going through its vacuous statement apparently put out to announce its resurrection, PDP and their harebrained members could be forgiven for their impish claims, on the ground that they have probably not seen or traversed the various road networks in Calabar metropolis, Calabar South, including other ongoing constructions and rehabilitation work in both the Central and Northern Senatorial Districts of the state. Administrations before Senator Otu’s had merely paid lip service to payment of gratuity of the state’s retired workforce since 2014. Could the governor’s decision to expend over ten billion Naira on payment of gratuities be what the PDP and its hordes of whiners consider as criminal? Clearly , the dead party would have been happy had the sitting governor toed the same path of insensitivity, mindlessness and wickedness meted out to our senior citizens. It’s on record that Otu recently approved the release of N10 billion naira in gratuity with payment to commence this month. This figure must have been too hefty to merit a mention in PDP’s hollow statement. It is equally ironic that PDP is unaware of the massive interventions by Governor Otu’s administration in education, particularly when it released to the West African Examination Council (WAEC), humongous sums running into nearly a billion naira, as registration fees for 16,301 Cross Riverians, not aliens, for their Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations. This perhaps was also a criminal gesture not worthy of an inclusion by the PDP in their tendentious and warped statement. And the list of Otu’s strides goes on. But the PDP and its jaded members, for want of what to say, will always go back to their pastime, which is simply, dishing out beer parlour gossip. This is why the various figures the dead party bandied in their well-worn regurgitations are not only outlandish but patently false. It is obvious that the PDP has begun playing politics too early, even before the whistle is sounded ahead of 2027. But truth must, however, be told that, it is time for governance and not politics. So the famished party and its diminishing clan can wait until 2027. If anything, the press statement by the PDP, is no doubt a glaring testament to the party’s diminishing relevance in the political landscape of the state. It is equally evident that the party is resorting to baseless accusations and sensationalism in a desperate attempt to regain political traction. This explains why the figures presented in their statement are not only misleading but also seek to deliberately ignore the significant achievements of Governor Otu's administration in just one year. Putatively, PDP’s claim that Governor Otu failed to account for over 70 billion Naira received as intervention funds and N150billon as monthly allocations is not only unfounded but outright hogwash with fiendish intent to stir public angst against Governor Otu. For a state that has consistently placed second to last among the 36 sub-nationals in revenue allocations, PDP can do well to tell Cross Riverians the magic or mystery behind the upsurge in the federal allocation to the state. While Governor Otu’s administration has been transparent and accountable by implementing measures to ensure that funds are utilized effectively for the benefit of the people, It is rather sad that the focus of the gripping party is merely on the figures, and not on the tangible outcomes of his interventions. In just one year, Governor Otu has prioritized infrastructure development, healthcare improvements, and social welfare programs, which have positively impacted the lives of many residents. Moreover, the assertion that the administration has not adequately utilized the NG-CARES program funds is a gross misrepresentation of reality. On this, the PDP as always, displayed a rather crass and monumental ignorance about what the NG-CARES is all about. It is a REIMBURSEMENT scheme which Cross River, like other states had earned following an independent verification process. That the administration of Otu transparently and successfully directed these resources towards critical areas, including cash transfers to vulnerable populations and community development initiatives clearly underscored his unwavering commitment to bettering the lot of the citizenry. The PDP’s claim of only 1,700 beneficiaries is also not reflective of the broader impact of these programs, which have reached thousands of Cross Riverians. The PDP's criticism of the budget allocations is also misplaced. Investments in the governor's office and other administrative sectors are not merely frivolous expenditures; they are necessary for the effective functioning of government. A well-equipped office fosters efficiency and productivity, ultimately benefiting the citizens. On the PDP’s hypocritical stance on local government funding, it is ludicrous that the same party that unconscionably haemorrhaged funds meant for councils for nearly two decades is suddenly playing the role of an Ombudsman. It is on record that under their watch, local governments in Cross River State faced stagnation and neglect. Since assuming the reins, Otu’s administration has been working strenuously to revitalize local governance structures and has made strides in ensuring that local councils are adequately funded and supported. Like a drowning man struggling to perch on a straw, the PDP, in its febrile attempt to announce its convalescence, is merely seeking to croak in order to be heard. It is the only way its allegation against the First Lady could be contextulised. Accordingly, the unfounded and baseless claims against the governor’s wife are not only defamatory but also reflect the PDP’s frustration at their inability to regain lost ground. No doubt, the PDP, no matter how it struggles to croak, remains a walking dead in Cross River State, and one desperately clutching at straws to justify its long waned influence. In submitting, The achievements of Governor Bassey Otu in his first year—including infrastructure development, improved healthcare access, and social welfare programs—far outweigh the unfounded and sinister criticisms from a party that has lost its way. As Cross Riverians continue to savour the positive changes under Otu's leadership, it is clear that the PDP's attempts to undermine and distract his administration will only further expose their irrelevance in the current political narrative. The governor’s eyes are firmly fixed on the ball and no rickety PDP or its misguided and confused members can rivet them. Obogo is Special Adviser to Governor Bassey Otu on Media and Publicity |
*Group calls on FG not to cancel #40000 per bag rice project* *.....Wants NIN to be used as a fair criteria to reach Nigerians* *...... To open farms and food bank to help Nigerians and host 2024 Investment Dialogue soon* A Group GCIO Nigerian Citizens Welfare Project ( GCIO-NCWP) has called on the federal government not to cancel the selling of 50kg of Rice for #40000 project as it will drive down the general prices of food and make life better for Nigerians. Reacting to the news of the suspension of the project by the federal government yesterday, the Director General of the group, ESANEROVO AGBODO stated that the FG initiative was a good one and should not be cancelled. However he stated that the government should expand the scope to cover all Nigerians across all classes using the NIN as a fair Criteria rather than focusing on only Civil servants or distribution or selling through politicians. He however reiterated the stand of the group as published in the Media immediately the fuel subsidy removal was announced in 2023. He said that the hunger protest today wouldn't have be necessary if the. Government had implemented some of the recommendations of GCIO-NCWP where the group stated that food Palliatives should be distributed using NIN not politicians or other channels that will make it complex for the common man to benefit from the project. The group also recommended then that the federal government should open farms in every local government as well as partner with the National Union of Road Transport Owners and Workers to subsidize transportation for citizens until the CNG buses are ready. "if some of these recommendations were implemented, the hyper inflation we are experiencing in Nigeria today would have been averted to an extent" . AGBODO continued: "We spent our resources to organize a Palliatives and Social Security Summit in Abuja on November 1st, 2023 to bring stakeholders together Including serving Ministers in Presidential Tinubu's cabinet to advise government on how to manage the fall out of the fuel subsidy removal but our suggestions are yet to be inculcated in government's strategy to combat the fall out of the tough decision. "If our suggestions were implemented a bit,it would have stemmed the sharp rise in transport fares and also reduce the prices of food stuffs because when transportation fares for food stuffs are reduced and food Palliatives distribution done through NIN,the prices of food in the open market will surely come down and the common man will not be excluded,", AGBODO added. Just as we recommended the Palliatives distribution using NIN then,,we are stating again that unless the NIN is used randomly to sell the bags of rice or give any welfare package to Nigerians, some people will still hijack the process and the common man will hardly benefit. We are also not resting on our oars because we have also rolled out plans to establish farms and also food banks in our little way to support Nigerians soon. GCIO-NCWP also plans to host an Investment Dialogue to fathom ways to attract both local and foreign investments to Nigeria to boost the value of Naira and create more jobs before the end of the year. We want to stop here and we also want to state that we will continue to make our suggestions open to the government because what we need is a better Nigeria for all. PRESS RELEASE Group asks FG to sell rice at #40000 per bag using NIN to reach Nigerians of all classes .....says Hunger Protest would have been averted if the government had implemented it's past suggestions ...... To open farms and food bank to help Nigerians A group GCIO Nigerian Citizens and Welfare Project ( GCIO-NCWP) has advised the federal government to implement its planned sales of bags of rice to citizens at 40000 Naira using the NIN rather than just focusing on Civil servants or using politicians to get the rice to the populace. Rising from a meeting yesterday, the Group stated that if the federal government had implemented it's suggestion in the past of distributing Palliatives using NIN and opening government farms in every local government as well as partnering with National Union of Road Transport Owners and Workers to subsidize transportation for citizens until the CNG buses are ready, the hyper inflation we are experiencing in Nigeria today would have been averted to an extent. Speaking after the meeting, the Director General of the Group, ESANEROVO AGBODO said: "We spent our resources to organize a Palliatives and Social Security Summit in Abuja on November 1st 2023 to bring stakeholders together Including serving Ministers in Presidential Tinubu's cabinet to advise government on how to manage the fall out of the fuel subsidy removal but our suggestions are yet to be inculcated in government's strategy to combat the fall out of the tough decision. If our suggestions were implemented a bit,it would have stemmed the rise of transport fares and also reduce the prices of food stuffs because when transporting fares for food stuffs is reduced and the demand for rice in the open market comes down, the prices of other food stuffs will also go down." Agbodo continued: "Yes,the federal government has many arms advising it but we still think they should also look to the advice of concerned citizens outside the government and at least inculcate some relevant items in their strategies". Now,we are stating again that unless the NIN is used randomly to sell the bags of rice to reach most Nigerians whether poor or rich in order to carry every Nigerian along, some people will still hijack the process and citizens will continue to feel discriminated against, and this will stir up more negative emotions against the government's economic policies. We want to stop here and we also want to state that we will continue to make our suggestions open to the government because what we need is a better Nigeria for all. GCIO-NCWP also plans to host an Investment Dialogue to fathom ways to attract both local and foreign investments to Nigeria to boost the value of Naira and create more jobs before the end of the year. Senator Florence ita giwa has congratulated Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan on her recent victory at the court of appeal. She made this known to newsmen in calabar. See statement below: Congratulations To A Strong, Dogged Fighter Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan is a classic example of the calibre of woman politician that I have been advocating for over the years. Her doggedness in the face of intimidating odds has deservedly earned her a seat in the senate. Even though she is not a member of my party, all the same, I salute her political courage. Her journey reminds me of the overwhelming impediments I encountered when I ran for my first election 3 decades ago. It may surprise many, but to this day, the men I defeated still bear malice and continously throw tantrums at me However, I must counsel Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan that this victory may not be the end of physical, emotional, and verbal violence from recalcitrant male politicians. If anything, this victory is bound to attract more attacks as it would appear that in Nigerian politics, it is a crime to be a beautiful, articulate, and principled woman. I therefore urge her to remain courageous and steadfast over the course of her blossoming political career. While we are excited over her victory as one of us, it is certainly not yet uhuru for women in politics. The number of women in elected offices is still embarrassingly abysmal. Natasha's epic battle with powerful men in her state is sadly one out of so many political intimidations most women in politics battle with unprincipled male politicians for political space. In the cause of my political career, I have had to confront and fight back amoral male politicians who have continually tried to intimidate me politically. As I congratulate Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan , I wish to challenge other women in politics to be inspired by her doggedness. We must push on until we form a critical mass within the Nigerian political space. Sen.(Princess) Florence Ita-Giwa OON |
‘This is Who I Am’: Florence Ita-Giwa Lectures Donald Duke The persistence of malice, in friendship squabbles to be precise, is mainly the result of a vast mass of habitual, petty malevolence, egotism, recklessness, and trivial gaffes. Only a residual fraction manifests from thought and superior intellect. In the amphitheater of Cross River politics, two luminaries have ignited a spectacle that dances on the precipice of incivility. Dame Florence Ita-Giwa, a venerable figure in the political terrain, now stands resolute, unyielding against the torrent of calumny. This is her story – a tale of grace, dignity and purpose, as she takes centre stage to lecture Donald Duke, a former compatriot turned antagonist whose recent barrage of calumny erodes his already questionable legacy. Dame Florence Ita-Giwa’s life is a testament to resilience and achievement, a symphony composed of relentless determination and a commitment to service. Born to the union of an Efik journalist mother and a Bakassi traditional ruler, her trajectory began in nursing, honing her skills in Aba before taking up the mantle as a Medical Secretary in London. Her foray into the pharmaceutical realm bore fruits of success, birthing Flobett Pharmacy and Med-Equip Limited in Lagos—a testament to her entrepreneurial spirit and foresight. In the intricate world of Nigerian politics, Dame Ita-Giwa has shone as a luminary. Her name resonates with victory in four elections as a candidate from an opposition party. But her pursuit of excellence did not waver; she sought further enlightenment in Legislative Management at a renowned London institution. Presently, she labors on a literary endeavor, crafting a book entitled “Legislative Management and Parliamentary Lobbying” with the intent to educate the next generation of politicians. Beyond the corridors of power, Dame Ita-Giwa’s maternal instincts are vividly apparent. A mother of 16 children, her embrace extends indiscriminately, transcending bloodlines. She has rescued some of her children from the challenging clutches of Bakassi, ensuring their access to quality education in private schools. It is an investment in the future, an act of benevolence that creates pillars upon which Nigeria’s promise can be fulfilled. Amidst the cacophony of controversy, let us address the issue of alleged cosmetic surgery. Such procedures, often private matters, do not inherently involve third-party participation. Accusations of vanity and unethical advantage-taking remain unsubstantiated. The fat-reduction surgery, for which Dame Ita-Giwa was criticised, was not shrouded in secrecy; she openly shared her motives with the public. It was a choice made to alleviate the fat around her waist, a decision not alien to Efik women due to their physiological proportions. Contrary to the narrative cast by her former compatriot, Donald Duke, Ita-Giwa stands as the Mother of the female folk of the Efik Eburutu Kingdom, bearing the prestigious title of Eka Iban Esien Efik Duop-iba. Within the royal palace of the Obong of Calabar, she commands respect and admiration. Even as her age is weaponised against her, she remains an unwavering force, impacting countless lives and shaping a brighter tomorrow. Donald Duke, once an ally, has chosen to partake in the unsavory theater of character assassination. His actions reek of pettiness and egotism, driven by motives veiled in darkness. Instead of addressing issues with civility, he has resorted to mudslinging and baseless accusations. In a world where chivalry and respect for one’s elders should prevail, his actions stand as a stark antithesis. In the end, as Ita-Giwa rises above the tumult, her legacy remains untarnished. She is a paragon of grace, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to the betterment of her community and nation. Her story serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us that even in the face of adversity and malicious intent, one’s true character can shine through, undiminished by the shadows of falsehoods. Donald Duke would do well to heed the lessons of civility and integrity that Dame Ita-Giwa exemplifies, for her narrative is a testament to the enduring power of authenticity. |
