Titan Trust Bank completes takeover of Union Bank

Titan Trust Bank Limited has brought to closure the deal enabling it to purchase a controlling stake in Nigeria’s second-oldest lender, Union Bank of Nigeria, the latter said Thursday in a regulatory filing, almost half a year after an agreement was reached by both parties.

The lender, backed by a former Central Bank of Nigeria deputy governor, Tunde Lemo, set out to acquire 89.4 per cent interest in Union Bank from a pool of stakes from exiting major investors including British Virgin Islands-based Atlas Mara and Union Global Partners Limited, but later upped the stake to 93.4 per cent.

Even though no mention of it is made in the statement seen by PREMIUM TIMES, a name change could follow.

“With the completion of the transaction, TGI Group, parent of TTB, now becomes the majority shareholder and core investor in Union Bank,” the document said.

The ownership transfer excludes Union Bank UK, a subsidiary of Union Bank of Nigeria, which also has been sold off, with the proceeds of divestment to all the shareholders of the latter as of March 4, 2022.

In the spirit of the change of ownership, the members of Union Bank’s board have exited the bank.

The suspended Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, has been released on bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed the development to Channels Television.

The EFCC had arrested Idris on May 16 over an N80 billion fraud.

He was arrested after failing to honour the commission’s invitations to respond to issues connected to the fraudulent act, the EFCC said.

After his arrest, the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, suspended Idris.

The suspension was contained in a letter by the minister dated May 18, in which she said the move was necessitated by the need to “allow for proper and unhindered investigation into the serious allegations in line with Public Service Rules 030406”.

According to the minister, during the suspension period, which is without pay, Mr Idris is not “expected to attend to your place of work or contact any official in your Office except for any disciplinary hearing that may be advised”.

Rapper turned actor Ikechukwu Onunaku has lamented the death of his wife’s 14-year-old cousin, Obinna Obiefuleh, who was allegedly beaten to death in Ideato in Imo State.

Ikechukwu cried out in an Instagram post on Thursday where he uploaded a video of the deceased at his wedding.

According to the rapper, the boy, an SS2 student Queen of the Holy Innocent Secondary School Ogwume in Ideato LGA, Imo State, was beaten up, bruised and found dead at 1 am in his boarding house.

The aggrieved actor who demanded justice for his cousin-in-law, described the circumstances surrounding the death as outrageous, adding that there were so many holes in the story.

He wrote: “This is so so sad. This is Obinna, 14 years of age, my inlaw, cousin to my wife. This footage is of him at my wedding. He Was found at 1 am dead in the boarding house of his school. Class – SS2, in senior hostel, Queen of the holy innocent secondary School Ogwume in Ideato lga.

“Beaten up, bruised. So many holes in this story. And frankly, I’m sick of these happenings. Now it has come to my doorstep. I urge every media portal to help bring light to the happenings surrounding this event and every other event concerning these children who we confidently give to schools to look after. This is outrageous.

“No child should have to die, talkless of in this manner where they are supposed to be safe and cared for. I implore all media and bloggers to please help pursue this to the end. MAY HIS SOUL FINALLY REST IN PEACE. MY DEEPEST CONDOLENCES TO THE ENTIRE
