No employer has the right to coerce participation in events that go against someone’s conscience. It’s called freedom of thought, not optional courtesy.
I’ve personally skipped several of these events, and to my surprise, the only person who privately confronted me about it was another African colleague at work lecturing me with that misguided proverb: “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” That mindset is completely wrong. You don’t compromise your values just to blend in, especially when the law protects your right to opt out!!
