Nothing is impossible!

When the people have had enough of the suffering that the ruling party has brought on them in the last seven years they'll think twice.

Unfortunately, we still play politics of ethnicity and religion in this country!

I appreciate your time for this debate!

The backlash of the currency redesign is obvious for political reasons too, because there was no issue until the ten days extension!
That weakness on Buhari to concede ground gave room to politicians to mess up the whole process. Otherwise by now we would have gone far in adapting to the new normal.

Honestly I have not had any reason to complain!
Just to prove something, after our back and forth discussions yesterday, I opened an Opay account right from my phone, moved money into it and pay some bills from it seamlessly!

We have to find a way around this mess and move forward in life, that's my point.

My training and profession allows me to see the positive from every negative situation first.

BluntTheApostle:

It can't get better.

You don't put the cart before the horse.

Why do you think the cash policy is causing so much problems?

It is because we did not do the right things first before implementing the policy.

No one is against the naira redesign or the mopping up of excess cash in circulation.

But there are things that should have been done first before implementing the policy.

First, there is no huge customer confidence in the banking system in Nigeria. In fact, many Nigerians believe banks work with Yahoo Yahoo boys. There are also many unresolved reversals. I, for example, I have a reversal amounting to 120,000 which is still unresolved since 2017.

Second, there is no citizen confidence in the government. How many people can trust the government? In fact, majority of people that I have interviewed believe this policy is a political rather than a monetary policy.

Third, there is no stable power. A cashless economy needs stable or adequate power supply. There is no stable power supply in Nigeria. If you are lucky to live in some areas, you may enjoy adequate power supply. But power supply in Nigeria is not uniform. There are places where you may not even see power for months. During my service year, there was a period in Modakeke when there was no power for over 6 months because the transformer exploded. You may be asking, "but there is generator". Think about the cost of petrol and diesel right now. Even cooking fuel like kerosene is now costly too.

Fourth, our minimum wage is too small. Someone who earns 30,000 naira will spend more in a cashless economy just to spend their little money in peace. With bank charges and all other associated charges, how much go remain on top the 30k. And this is Nigeria, where many earn below the minimum wage. Employers of labour in the retailing business pay very terribly low salaries.

These and many problems should have been resolved before implementing this policy.

Because they didn't resolve the problems I listed, that is why the masses are suffering.

It is not that the masses don't appreciate the policy, but the policy is becoming a burden to them because the government poorly implemented it.

Politics / Re: Has Anyone Withdrawn Cash From Atms Of Late? by Efuaye(m): 9:44pm On Feb 20, 2023
We just have to start from somewhere!
It can only get better!

BluntTheApostle:

I am not sure you know what you are saying.

If someone decides to waste his money, how is that your concern? Or, how does it benefit the economy?

People are hoarding money, you say they are CAREFUL.

CBN wants to reduce money hoarding, but they are ending up encouraging it.

If this hardship persists, we will return to the days when armed robbers rob homes because money will now be kept at home.

Moreover, hoarding money encourages a culture of hoarding which is not good for individuals and the economy at large.

What is the benefit of a cashless economy to Nigeria?

All these are not gains of the implementation.

What did the implementation set out to achieve?

It has not achieved anything.

It wants to stop hoarding. But what it has done is extend cash hoarding to even poor Nigerians. People are now hoarding (not saving) cash.

Vote buying (an extension of cash hoarding) is still yet to be decided. CBN says they sent money to banks, banks say not enough. This means the money have gone into the hands of politicians.

To deepen cashless economy. It has failed in this regard. You grow a cashless economy with time and patience.

First, you need to build the people's trust in the banking system.

This is Nigeria where we have many unresolved reversal issues.

How many people trust the banks to keep their money safe?

Nowadays, when I want to transfer money or buy airtime/data, I would be praying for good network.

Yesterday, I could not use UBA USSD and mobile app until midnight.

You think going cashless is a day's job?

It took Sweden 20 years to deepen cashlessness to 91%.

And that is a country that has stable power supply, a safe banking system, and a strong internet infrastructure.

They won't be OK!
They can't be OK!

If they lose at the polls, it will be worse for them because they won't have the cash to keep oiling their so called structure.

On your recommended postulations, we are in Nigeria, we all know how slow and seemingly ineffective our judiciary and the anti-corruption agencies are when it comes to the political class.

[quotes author=LeopardX post=121071636]
The truth is these so called corrupt people will be alright at the end of the day.

You don't punish corruption by redesigning the naira. Rather you do that by arresting corrupt people, charging them to court and jailing them.
That's how to punish corrupt contractors and politician.
But maybe he's a coward.[/quote]
Politics / Re: Has Anyone Withdrawn Cash From Atms Of Late? by Efuaye(m): 2:04pm On Feb 20, 2023
I thought President Buhari and Emefiela have explained that to us already!

I have always known that this currency redesign is one policy Buhari wouldn't leave out to punish corrupt politicians and contractors!
He did it in 1984 and he has done it again.

LeopardX:

You are right, but I was told that the total volume of cash within Nigeria is 51 trillion. Of that only less than 10% of that amount is in circulation, which is even less than advanced countries like USA, JAPAN and the UK despite their cashless operations.

So what's the point of mopping physical cash off the streets at a short notice?
Politics / Re: Has Anyone Withdrawn Cash From Atms Of Late? by Efuaye(m): 1:34pm On Feb 20, 2023
Wastages!
Everyone
Is careful how they spend the little cash they have!
Those that refused to embrace online transfers and the use of digital banking even among the literates are embracing it now by force!
The Tomatos and pepper sellers who hitherto wouldn't even consider using internet banking are all opening accounts!
Yesterday, some of our church members who came for service through public transport did through drivers who accepted electronic money transfers!

Since the implementation tell me 3 things we av gain so far from the policy...
Politics / Re: Has Anyone Withdrawn Cash From Atms Of Late? by Efuaye(m): 1:19pm On Feb 20, 2023
It's just foolhardy to think that we will have cash back in circulation like it was before the redesign!
You were not expecting another 2 trillion naira cash to be injected back into circulation after the withdrawal of the old ones!
We should all get used to the new normal, Cashless Economy!

I was just discussing this issue of vote-buying in Nigeria by politicians with my daughter! I have to pull up my last article on it for her to read...

Why would anybody BUY VOTE?

Why would anyone SELL his or her vote?

Perpetrators should be jailed.

May we never again have a party like APC in Nigeria, in fact globally!
A broom-waving party! That's wizardry.

This was how they lied against Goodluck Jonathan of bribing CAN with 9billion naira in 2015 using a pastor too!
APC lies about their rallies by posting fake pictures and go further to lie about LP rallies by posting fake pictures against their rallies to mislead the public.

If God doesn't answer our PRAYERS by removing APC from power then Nigeria is finished.

Vote for Peter Obi

If the oil is burning/shorting badly, then get ready to change the engine in about a year from now!
