Biafra: Where is the International Community?

A new generation of Biafrans is now peacefully advocating for an independent Biafra. Muhammadu Buhari, the Muslim president of Nigeria, is fighting the nascent independence movement with military force. "I saw one boy trying to answer a question. He immediately raised his hands, but the soldiers opened fire ..." — Witness to the shootings, to Amnesty International.

As for IPOB's leader, Nnamdi Kanu, director of London-based Radio Biafra, he was arrested in October 2015 and has been held since, illegally, despite meeting bail conditions. It is noteworthy that a peaceful situation, such as that of the pro-Biafra movement, apparently requires a "military option", whereas a lethal terrorist group, such as the Muslim Fulani herdsmen, who murder innocent civilians, does not. This tactic furthermore brings into question whether Buhari's efforts at curbing Boko Haram in the country are genuine or merely a play he puts on half-heartedly for the benefit of the international community.

On paper, the plight of Biafrans -- whose state in what is today southeastern Nigeria, lasted for only three years, 1967-70, before the Nigerian authorities ended it with a genocide against them -- should, for the international community, be an open-and-shut case. Journalists, human rights activists, social justice warriors on campuses throughout the West, and organizations such as the United Nations and the European Union, all ostensibly claim to care deeply about human rights, especially for people whom the Europeans once colonized.

Biafra constitutes a textbook example of British colonization. The country's brief existence was cut short by the Nigerian government's genocide, which crushed all hopes for independence and self-determination. Biafrans, today, are denied their fundamental rights of assembly and free expression -- rights that are guaranteed by the Nigerian constitution. The Nigerian government continues murderously to oppress them and their movement for sovereign freedom.

The international community, headed by the UN, which preaches the gospel of human rights and self-determination, persistently ignores their national aspirations. The territories that constitute present-day Nigeria came under colonial occupation as British protectorates around 1903. Nigeria is essentially an artificial construct, created as a colony by Great Britain in 1914, when it merged the protectorates. The country is made up of a number of different indigenous African peoples, among them the Biafrans, who are ethnically predominantly Igbo.

After Nigeria's independence from Great Britain in 1960, Biafra seceded from Nigeria, and in 1967 declared its own state. The Nigerian government refused to accept the secession and responded by launching a war on Biafra. The assault included a blockade of the nascent state, and resulted in the murder of more than two million Biafrans, many of whom were children who starved to death because of the blockade. The Biafrans, watching the dissolution of their young state, surrendered to Nigeria in January 1970. They realized, perhaps, that the world's abandonment of them did not warrant any future for their cause.
Unlike others at that time, such as the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), Biafrans did not engage in hijacking and bombing airplanes, taking hostages and other forms of terrorist attacks against innocent civilians to further their cause. The international community responds obediently to terrorism. Whereas the PLO has now become the Palestinian Authority (PA) and is among the world's largest per capita recipients of international foreign aid, with a plethora of "human rights activists" championing its cause (as well as a UN body, UNRWA, exclusively for Palestinians), it would be hard to find a diplomat at the UN who even knows how to pronounce "Biafra".

The question inevitably comes to mind, why the ostensibly anti-racist, pro-self-determination international community of opinion makers and human rights advocates has neither the political goodwill, nor the treasure to spare for the Biafrans. Although the genocide effectively ended Biafran independence, a new generation of Biafrans is now peacefully pressing for an independent Biafra again. In an example of extreme hypocrisy, Muhammadu Buhari, the Muslim president of Nigeria, has declared himself fully committed to a Palestinian state, while his military fights the Biafran movement for self-determination with brutal force.

On May 30, Biafrans commemorated Biafra Heroes Remembrance Day. According to Amnesty International, the only major human rights organization that has interested itself in Biafra, "An on-the-ground investigation... has confirmed that the Nigerian army gunned down unarmed people ahead of last month's planned pro-Biafran commemoration events in Onitsha, Anambra state. "Evidence gathered from eyewitnesses, morgues and hospitals confirms that between 29-30 May 2016, the Nigerian military opened fire on members of the Indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB), supporters and bystanders at three locations in the town."

"Opening fire on peaceful IPOB supporters and bystanders who clearly posed no threat to anyone is an outrageous use of unnecessary and excessive force and resulted in multiple deaths and injuries. In one incident, one person was shot dead after the authorities burst in on them while they slept," said M.K. Ibrahim, Country Director of Amnesty International Nigeria. He continued, "This is not the first time that IPOB supporters have died at the hands of the military. It is becoming a worrying pattern and this incident and others must be immediately investigated".

Also, according to Amnesty, some of the dead and injured IPOB supporters were shot in the back, an indication that they were fleeing the scene when they were shot. In addition, soldiers stormed St. Edmunds Catholic church, where hundreds of people, who had come from other parts to participate in the pro-Biafran commemoration events, were sleeping. According to one witness:
"At about midnight, we heard someone banging the door. We refused to open the door but they forced the door open and started throwing teargas. They also started shooting inside the compound. People were running to escape. I saw one guy shot in the stomach. He fell down but the teargas could not allow people to help him. I did not know what happened to the guy as I escaped and ran away."

Another witness told Amnesty that on the morning of May 30, he saw soldiers open fire on a group of around 20 men and boys aged between 15 and 45. He said that five of them were killed. "I saw one boy trying to answer a question. He immediately raised his hands, but the soldiers opened fire...He lay down, lifeless. I saw this myself." The witness described how military officers loaded men with gunshot wounds into one van, and what appeared to be corpses into another. Later that morning, another witness described how police shot a child bystander as a group of young men protested the shootings.
According to Amnesty.

"Following the shootings, the military told media sources that the soldiers only opened fire after being shot at first, but Amnesty International's research has found no evidence to support this. All the people the organization interviewed said that the protesters were not armed; one young man said that he threw stones at the police and military after they shot teargas at the IPOB members. He said the military then fired live ammunition in return. Information gathered by Amnesty International indicates that the deaths of supporters and members of IPOB was the consequence of excessive and unnecessary use of force. International law requires the government to promptly investigate unlawful killings with a view to bringing the perpetrators to justice. Amnesty International is also calling for those IPOB supporters still held in detention without charge to be either immediately charged or released".

Amnesty International began research into the violence and killings of IPOB members and supporters in southeast Nigeria in January 2016 and is expected to publish a comprehensive report on the matter in the near future. Thus far, Amnesty says , its research shows that, "Since August 2015, there have been at least five similar incidents in Onitsha alone where the police and military shot unarmed IPOB members and supporters. Amnesty has documented cases of alleged unlawful killings by the Nigerian army between August 2015 and May 2016. In August 2015, military officers opened fire on peaceful supporters of IPOB calling for an independent Biafran state. The killings and mass arrests of members and supporters of IPOB by joint military and police operations continued.... On 17 December 2015, for example, the military killed five people when they opened fire on members of the IPOB who were demonstrating in Onitsha in a celebration of a court order for the release of their purported leader, Nnamdi Kanu. In February 2016, the Nigerian military used excessive force to disperse a peaceful gathering in a school compound in Aba. At least nine people were killed and many more injured..."

As for IPOB's leader, Nnamdi Kanu, director of London-based Radio Biafra, he was arrested in October 2015 and has since been held, illegally, despite meeting bail conditions.

By contrast, while President Buhari uses military force against the peaceful Biafran movement, including at events as innocuous as Biafran commemoration ceremonies, his government has stated that it will not use military force against Fulani herdsmen. The latter comprise a predominantly Muslim, semi-nomadic group, now deemed to be the fourth-deadliest terror group in the world according to the Global Terrorism Index (GTI). Between 2010 and 2013, they killed 80 people in Nigeria, but by the end of 2014, this figure had risen to at least 1,229 people, according to the GTI, which ranked the African nation as the world's third most terrorized country.

According to Buhari's Minister of Interior, Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau, however, "This is a non-military issue that borders on law and order. It is not every security issue that you call in the military. It is the responsibility of the police to maintain peace. I believe that if we put the police in proper position in terms of discharging its functions, then there would be no need for military option. The police are equal to the task.... In any case, I do not even have the power to deploy the military for anything. It is only when the situation gets out of hand that you invite the military."
It is noteworthy that a peaceful situation, such as that of the pro-Biafra movement, apparently requires a "military option", whereas a lethal terrorist group, such as the Muslim Fulani herdsmen, who murder innocent civilians, does not. This tactic furthermore brings into question, whether Buhari's efforts at curbing Boko Haram in the country are genuine or merely a play the Nigerian president puts on half-heartedly for the benefit of the international community.

The situation should at least give countries such as Germany serious reason to reconsider their involvement in the region. Germany has said that it will begin supplying military hardware to the Nigerian government to address "security challenges in its North East and Niger Delta regions" before the end of 2016. One has to wonder whether Germany, a country that has invited migrants into its country in order to show how tolerant it is, has considered that it risks supplying the Nigerian government with military hardware that could well be used to kill Biafrans.
Other countries in the process of selling, or planning to sell, weapons to Nigeria, include the United States, which refused -- bizarrely, out of "human rights concerns" -- to provide the former Nigerian president, Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian, with weapons to fight Boko Haram, but apparently has no qualms about helping Buhari, a Muslim, whose murder of defenseless people in southeastern Nigeria is evidently considered unproblematic.
In short, the international community has a lot of explaining to do.

DSS At It Again: Another Failed Criminal Stigmatization Of IPOB As A Terrorist Organization


(Abeokuta Nigeria, 1st July 2016)-The Department of State Security Services is it again and starkly economical with the truth over its latest claims that “it has arrested an IPOB member in connection with plans to carry out coordinated attacks against religious bodies/edifices; police check points and the Computer Village in Ikeja, Lagos State with Improvised Explosive Devices”. The DSS says “the known IPOB member was arrested while making logistics supplies for their nefarious plan”.


The DSS further claimed that there are plans by the IPOB to carry out terrorist attacks during the Sallah celebration across the country. In other words, the DSS is saying, just as it falsely claimed few months ago, that the IPOB “is a terrorist organization”; thereby comparing it with the Boko Haram terror group that is notorious in engaging in deadly bombing activities particularly during high profile religious activities such as Xmas and Sallah feasts. This is a criminal stigmatization too many.


The DSS statement, as usual, is unprofessional and inter-service unfriendly. For instance, the DSS was not created to tackle common street crimes like armed robbery, kidnapping or gun running. It is purely the duties of the Nigeria Police Force and its specialist agencies such as CID and SARS to handle such. Even if the DSS provides intelligence, leading to the apprehension of the suspects, the substantive post-arrest processes including investigations and public updates on progress of same, statutorily reside with the Nigeria Police Force. To say the least, the DSS is dangerously over-stepping its statutory bounds and must be called to order.


Just as the Service goofed unpardonable in its 9th of April 2016 phantom claims of murdering of “Five Hausa-Fulani Citizens by IPOB in Abia State”, the DSS has in its latest statement, made further mockery of the country’s intelligence community regionally and internationally by unprofessionally muddling up issues and engaging in falsehood of unpardonable proportion. The DSS is obviously a major victim of Nigeria’s securitization and intelligence decadence.


However, our major concern here is another attempt at labelling the IPOB and its leadership as “a terrorist organization”. The DSS has failed again just as it failed before. Labelling and stigmatizing the IPOB as “a raging and ravaging terrorist organization” is totally annoying and reprehensible. The IPOB has been forced by all means by the Buhari administration through its army, DSS, police, etc to abandon its strong nonviolence avowal and methodology and where these attempts have failed, resort to all kinds of stigmatization to label it so has been made and is still being made.


Records at our disposal, following our in-depth investigation concerning the arrest of Engineer Chidiebere Onwudiwe since early hours of Wednesday, 22nd of June 2016, have again, rubbished the DSS latest claims of “arresting a known IPOB member for planned terrorist attacks on religious bodies/edifices and Ikeja Computer Village”. Engineer Chidiebere Onwudiwe, to put the records straight for all Nigerians and members of the international community”, including the lying DSS; is the National Coordinator of the IPOB and well known to local and international rights and media organizations as well as members of international diplomatic community. He is non-violent and has never used or advocated violence till date.


Some months ago, instructed agents of the Buhari administration infiltrated the ranks of the IPOB locally and internationally and successfully planted “strawmen” or moles within the group, leading to internal division within its ranks. The government sponsored division was put on hold following the transfer of its leader (Nnamdi Kanu) from DSS underground detention to Kuje Prisons.


In the 30th of May 2016 violently aborted Igbo/Biafran Heroes Day anniversary, the ranks of the IPOB were again infiltrated by agents of the Federal Government with heavy inducement, leading to internal sabotage of the anniversary, with the “purchased” leaking of vital information about the preparation of the peaceful rally to government, on account of which, as much as 140 unarmed and innocent citizens were massacred and numerous others deadly shot with live bullets fired by soldiers, navy and police from automatic weapons.


In the late evening of 21st of June 2016, Mr. Onwudiwe, who resides in Rumukurushi area of Port Harcourt, was trailed through a certain Sienna car he was driving home with by some secret operatives aided by some mole-IPOB members. He was trailed to the front of his residence where he parked and headed into his apartment. He was returning from the routine meeting of his group in Port Harcourt when he was sighted with a Sienna car and trailed. Before then, a complaint had been instigated against him at DSS, Port Harcourt, by some of his members, compromised by government agents; who alleged leadership crisis.


It was on account of such conspiracy that the DSS chaps later mobilized and stormed Engineer Chidiebere Onwudiwe’s house in the hours of the blue law or early morning of 22nd of June 2016; violently broke his door and swooped on him, leading to his arrest and detention in the DSS cell till date. It is therefore surprising and shocking as per how the above scenario is connected to the DSS concoction. How can the DSS claim that “he was arrested while making logistics supplies for their nefarious plan”? Does a citizen make logistics supplies in his or her sleep?


The DSS also childishly theorized Mr. Onwudiwe’s “mechanical and chemical” university training as a surely ticket of his potentials of “making and detonating bombs”. Planning to “attack religious bodies/edifices and Ikeja Computer Village”, is further concoction too many. That a citizen was unjustly arrested and unconstitutionally detained since 22nd of June 2016 and only for his arrest to be made public few days to the Sallah celebration, further exposes the Federal Government bent to give a dog a bad name so as to hang it at all costs.

ANOTHER BUNGLED ATTEMPT BY MUHAMMADU BUHARI AND HIS DSS TO CRIMINALIZE BIAFRANS AND BRAND IPOB A TERRORSIT ORGANIZATION



Retired Major General Muhammadu Buhari and his Department of State Services (DSS) have once again failed woefully in their spurious attempt at criminalizing Biafrans and branding the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) a terrorist organization.


In an incoherent and error-filled statement sent to the media, the DSS stated that “sequel to increasing threat posed to public peace by the activities of the Independent [sic] People of Biafra (IPOB), this Service arrested one Chidiebere Onwudiwe, a graduate of mechanical and chemical Engineering and known member of IPOB, on 22nd June, 2016.” The stark illiterate-filled DSS in their statement further noted that “Onwudiwe and his associates within and outside the country, were planning to carry out coordinated attacks against religious bodies/edifices, police check points and the Computer Village in Ikeja, Lagos State, with Improvised Explosive devices (IEDS)” and that “The suspect was apprehended while making logistics supplies for their nefarious plan.”


First of all, let us just point out only two out of the several errors in this pack of lies from the DSS’ statement; (1) We are Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and NOT “Independent People of Biafra”. Even in the records of all the court cases concerning the illegal kidnapping and unconstitutional prosecution of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to which the DSS have been part of, there was no place where the word “INDEPENDENT” was used and (2) At which University in Nigeria can someone graduate in both Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering at the same time? Even in the more advanced countries it is very difficult to achieve such a feat not to talk of the Buhari’s run-down universities in Nigeria.


It is laughable that the DSS is accusing IPOB of posing increasing threat to public peace while they have not made a single official statement concerning the mayhem and havoc being exhibited everyday by Boko Haram and the so-called Fulani herdsmen. This paved the way for DSS to come out yesterday to laughably label IPOB a terrorist group trying to bomb Biafran businesses in Ikeja-Lagos. The world must be placed on notice that should anything untoward happen in and around Ikeja area, the DSS should be held responsible.

ANOTHER BUNGLED ATTEMPT BY MUHAMMADU BUHARI AND HIS DSS TO CRIMINALIZE BIAFRANS AND BRAND IPOB A TERRORSIT ORGANIZATION



Retired Major General Muhammadu Buhari and his Department of State Services (DSS) have once again failed woefully in their spurious attempt at criminalizing Biafrans and branding the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) a terrorist organization.


In an incoherent and error-filled statement sent to the media, the DSS stated that “sequel to increasing threat posed to public peace by the activities of the Independent [sic] People of Biafra (IPOB), this Service arrested one Chidiebere Onwudiwe, a graduate of mechanical and chemical Engineering and known member of IPOB, on 22nd June, 2016.” The stark illiterate-filled DSS in their statement further noted that “Onwudiwe and his associates within and outside the country, were planning to carry out coordinated attacks against religious bodies/edifices, police check points and the Computer Village in Ikeja, Lagos State, with Improvised Explosive devices (IEDS)” and that “The suspect was apprehended while making logistics supplies for their nefarious plan.”


First of all, let us just point out only two out of the several errors in this pack of lies from the DSS’ statement; (1) We are Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and NOT “Independent People of Biafra”. Even in the records of all the court cases concerning the illegal kidnapping and unconstitutional prosecution of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to which the DSS have been part of, there was no place where the word “INDEPENDENT” was used and (2) At which University in Nigeria can someone graduate in both Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering at the same time? Even in the more advanced countries it is very difficult to achieve such a feat not to talk of the Buhari’s run-down universities in Nigeria.


It is laughable that the DSS is accusing IPOB of posing increasing threat to public peace while they have not made a single official statement concerning the mayhem and havoc being exhibited everyday by Boko Haram and the so-called Fulani herdsmen. GENESIS OF BUHARI's HATRED FOR IGBO BIAFRA........ BIAFREXIT IS SACROSANCT: BUHARI’S HATRED FOR BIAFRANS CANT STOP IT.

That the blood thirty President of Nigeria popularly known as African Hitler Muhammadu Buhari (AHMB) hates Biafrans and will not hesitate to continue in his government planned and strategic killing and maiming of Biafrans is well known to all and sundry. However, what may not be known to all is that AHMB hatred for Biafrans did not start today. As far back as 1975 he (AHMB) had aided various efforts geared to deliberately stifle the resurgence of Biafrans into finding their feet in the country after the end of the Nigeria – Biafran war in 1970.

It may interest you to note that in 1975 that Buhari was a member of the Military Council of the regime of the government of Nigeria. The Military Council of that regime happens to be the highest decision making organ of the government. It’s on record that immediately the regime settled down for business of decision making and under the supervision of AHMB and his cohorts in the Council, that the Military Council ‘’dispatched to then East-Central state a mandatory Military Pro-consul in the person of now late Colonel Anthony Aboki Ochefu whose given assignment was the dismantling of the East-Central State Public Service.

To achieve this assigment, Colonel Anthony Aboki Ochefu had for good measure declared that the MAINFRAME COMPUTER of the Eastern Data Processing Center (which records confirms was the first of its kind in the African Continent, long before the IT current craze) was unnecessary madness, beyond the needs and the interest of the state in particular and ‘’Biafrans’’ in general.

That action so delighted AHMB that he personally supervised, in conjunction with the Military Pro-consul of the East Central State deliberate stripping, summarily dismantling and the relocation of the computer to Ahmadu Bello University in Zaira, Kaduna State where it found needful and sane home which only resulted its waste till date as it was not put to any use. A classic example of it is better that it is wasted in the north than to be useful to the AHMB hated Biafrans. The data computer and center was strategic to the economic and overall planning of developmental needs of the Biafrans after the bitter civil war.
Similar Scenario equally played out following the AHMB planned, led and executed coup of December 31st, 1983. Mind you that the coup was primarily carried out to thwart any possibility of Chief Alex Ekwueme the then Vice President who incidentally is from Buhari’s hated Biafra land from taking over at the end of Shehu Shagari’s regime.

The very first thing AHMB did was to appoint his own Military Pro-consul, in the person of Bridadier Ike Nwachukwu formerly known as Omar Sanders (a hawkish and a humbugic military officer who played active role in the massacre of his supposedly fellow Biafrans during the Nigeria – Biafra civil war). Again, his assignment: dismantle the gains made in Imo State under then Governor Sam Mbakwe.

As expected by the Biafrans in the know, Ike Nwachukwu’s first declaration, under what he called ‘’Imo formula’’ was to dismantle the 42 industrial establishments (geared towards massive employment of Biafrans) embarked upon by Sam Mbakwe, which were at various stages of completion, and financial commitments settled.

Offcourse, Ike Nwachukwu’s ‘’major achievement’’ throughout his reign in the state was to consolidate the Imo State University under a single campus at Uturu, near his ‘’country home’’, from the 5-campus planned design which the government of Sam Mbakwe had envisioned after the model of the State of New York University System, evolved into a beautifully designed network of university campuses intended to stimulate strategic, short and the long run development of the state as well as carter for a wider range of students’ needs and skills.

Buhari in display of his hatred for Biafrans that have defiled all logic will have the Vice President, Alex Ekwueme (who is of Biafra Origin) of then democratically government that he over threw during his coup of December 31st, 1983 thrown into Kirikiri prison over frivolous corruption accusation while keeping the man at the helm of affairs of the government then President, Shehu Shagari who incidentally is a fellow northern with Buhari under house arrest.
Buhari in continuation of his hatred for Biafrans will go ahead to arrest and detain the leader of the defunct Biafran republic, Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu who has never been part of any Nigerian government of corruption charges. Sam Mbakwe who till date remains one of the finest leaders that the East has ever produced was equally not spared of AHMB hatred of Biafrans’ arrest and detention.

Between May 29th, 2015 till date during his second coming as the ruler of Nigeria, AHMB has personally supervised the killing of over 5,000 innocent Biafrans either through direct instructions to the Army to crush and eliminate the ‘’miscreants’’ order (the miscreants being armless protesting Biafrans) or through covertly or overtly operations via his Fulani herdsmen kinsmen.

Buhari who is complicit in the murder of over 2 million Biafrans from 1966 – 70 has also vowed to rather be drowned in same Rivers with Biafrans than to let them exit the country via a referendum. One is now left to ask: Why does AHMB want the continued stay of Biafrans that he has demonstrated enough hatred for through his actions and policies over the years in same Nigeria? Is it because he loves the shedding of Biafran bloods or because he loves to see them weep?

Is it not hypocritically that Buhari who hailed the out-going Prime Minister of Britain for his courage in listening to the wishes of his people who had voted to exit EU has not summoned same courage to listen to Biafrans and organize a referendum where Biafrans will have same opportunity that the Brits had to decide if they wish to stay in same country where characters like Buhari has supervised their killings and maiming or if they will want to exit the contraption called Nigeria.

No matter what happens, AHMB must know that his hatred, killings, maiming and threats of getting drown with Biafrans cannot stop the coming of the Biafra as her exit from Nigeria is sacrosanct.
