WORRIED by the problem of abandoned certificates, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has said it will deploy an Electronic Certificate Management System to facilitate the issuance of certificates to candidates.

The council’s Head, Public Affairs, Mr Damianus Ojijeogu disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.

According to him, the online system will enable the council to print certificates of candidates only on request.

“With this in place, it will assist the council in the decongesting backlog of certificates lying fallow for several years with very few owners coming up to collect them.

Sure, there are only three African countries with constitutional monarchies – Morocco, Swaziland and Lesotho — but there are several hundred traditional monarchs dispersed across Africa in urban, semi-urban and rural communities in independent countries. Mostly, these monarchs wield little or no formal political power, but they fulfill spiritual and ceremonial obligations to members of their community.

Being a traditional monarch in Africa can be a lucrative affair. A significant number of these rulers are formally recognized by state institutions and as a consequence, many of them receive generous stipends and allowances from the government. For example, King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu, the traditional King of the Zulu people, South Africa’s largest ethnic tribe, receives an annual allowance of about $6 million to cater to the needs of his royal household. He also gets to enjoy other perks like frequent private air travel and keeps an exotic collection of automobiles, all paid for by South Africa’s taxpayers.

Many African monarchs also earn a significant income through the goodwill and generosity of their communities. It is not uncommon for wealthy members of a tribe or community to give substantial sums of money, cars, land or houses to their traditional Kings in return for spiritual blessings or unrelated favors. And since these traditional monarchs may wield significant influence in political circles, some of them get invited join boards of large corporations. Obi Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi (King) of Onitsha, a mid-sized commercial town in Nigeria’s southeastern region, serves as the Non-Executive Chairman of Unilever Nigeria, a large publicly-listed manufacturer of consumer goods, and he previously served as Chairman of Diamond Bank, a leading Nigerian commercial bank. Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, who is the Alake (King) of Egbaland, a clan of Yoruba-speaking people in Nigeria, is the Chairman of Oando, a large Nigerian energy company.

Some of these rulers control large fortunes. Some have built their fortunes from scratch by starting successful enterprises and shrewdly reinvesting their profits into a diverse range of business concerns. Others have simply had wealth transferred to them by their forefathers.

The African Biomedical Engineering Mobility (ABEM) project is funded by the Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme of the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency of the European Commission. The scheme is modelled on Europe’s well-established and successful Erasmus-Mundus programme. As part of the Roadmap 2014-2017 of the Joint Africa-EU Strategy, the Intra-Africa Mobility Scheme underlines the contribution of higher education towards economic and social development and the potential of academic mobility to improve the quality of higher education.

ABEM will build human and institutional capacity in Africa for needs-­based health technology research and development. The project will train postgraduate students with skills and specialisations not offered at their home institutions. Furthermore, it will support the development of biomedical engineering programmes that are being established, or have recently been established, at partner institutions and contribute toward harmonising biomedical engineering curricula across the continent. This will be achieved through the provision of scholarships to cover the full cost of mobility between African higher education institutions.

Overall, the project will enhance employment opportunities for graduates, enhance staff research profiles and teaching competencies, enhance institutional research profiles and inter-­university cooperation, and support the development of solutions for health challenges from an African perspective.

Speared ALIVE Factory robot skewers specialist with 10 foot-long steel spikes…

A CHINESE factory worker has survived being skewered with TEN metal spikes when a robot malfunctioned.

The 49-year-old, named as Mr Zhou, was working on the night shift at a porcelain factory in Hunan province when he was struck by a falling robotic arm.

A bug in Facebook’s ‘View As’ feature led to the breach

If Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica data privacy scandal wasn’t enough to get your attention, the company has some more bad news for its users today.

As reported by the New York Times, Facebook today announced that a recent cyberattack may have compromised the information of around 50 million users. While not quite on the scale of the Equifax breach in 2017, 50 million users is still no small number.

Naturally, though, that number could change. Facebook’s investigation into the matter is not yet complete, so it’s tough to say how accurate it will be in the end – more compromised accounts could be found, or the issue could prove to be less severe than it seems.

Either way, as a precautionary measure, Facebook has forced “more than” 90 million users to log out of their accounts.

Many of the individuals on Forbes’ 2018 World’s Billionaires list, for instance, got rich by handling other people’s money. The finance and investments industry—including private equity owners, hedge fund managers and discount brokers—helped produce more billionaires than any other. Altogether the sector held 310, or around 14%, of the fortunes on our 2,208 person list. Billionaires in finance topped the ranks in countries ranging from Brazil to Indonesia. Of these, 24 were newcomers. That includes the first-ever cryptocurrency billionaires, Chris Larsen and Changpeng Zhao (known as CZ), as well as Canadian Stephen Smith, who launched his mortgage lender just four years after being personally bankrupt.

Fashion and retail was the industry with the second most billionaires, accounting for 235, or 11% of the worldwide total. Six of the top 20 billionaires on our list were part of that category, thanks to their respective ownerships of fashion retailer Zara, cosmetics brand L’Oreal, luxury group LVMH and Walmart, the world’s biggest company, as measured by revenue. The industry has minted plenty of other name-brand billionaires including Sara Blakely, the shapewear guru behind Spanx; Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank; and Home Depot cofounders Bernard Marcus, Arthur Blank and Kenneth Langone.

Even as e-commerce giant Amazon takes a bite out of retail sales, there are plenty of entrepreneurs still making money in the sector, including 19 newcomers. Among the new faces are Sheela Gautam, who sells mattresses in India; Helga Kellerhals, who owns electronics retailers in Germany and Lawrence Rossy, who runs the largest dollar store chain in Canada, Dollarama. In all, billionaires in the fashion and retail industry were worth nearly $1.2 trillion, or around 13% of the list’s combined fortune of $9.1 trillion.

A tenth of the richest people on earth got rich by building real estate empires. With a total of 220 billionaires, the real estate industry was the third largest source of wealth this year. China was home to the most property owners, with 60, followed by the United States, with 44. Among those was President Donald Trump, with an estimated net worth of $3.1 billion. But there was another Donald who was five times richer: Donald Bren, the richest real estate developer in the U.S., with an estimated net worth of $16.3 billion.

Russia to upgrade Syrian air defence

Russia said the S-300 system would “significantly increase the Syrian army’s capabilities”

Russia is to send new anti-aircraft missiles to Syria, a week after Syrian forces accidentally shot down a Russian aircraft during an Israeli air strike.

The S-300 missile defence system will be delivered within two weeks.

The Russian reconnaissance plane was downed last Monday after Israeli jets attacked targets in Latakia province.

Israel, which insisted Syria’s military was to blame, warned that giving the S-300 to “irresponsible actors” would make the region more dangerous.

US national security adviser John Bolton said the decision would cause a “significant escalation” in Syria’s civil war and urged Russia to reconsider.
