Most SUVs are large with at least 3-liter (3000 cc) engine capacity and a 4x4 (four-wheel drive also denoted by 4WD). The engine capacity is however bigger in certain cases, and may go up to say 6 liters. A mid-sized SUV, on an average, has a 2-liter (2000 cc) to 4 liter engine capacity, with 6-8 v cylinders. Many of them do not have a regular four-wheel drive, though there are certain exceptions. The mid-sized SUV is usually used by people living in cities or crowded areas. It can also be commented that these SUVs are a bit cheaper than the normal SUV models, have better mileage and are cheaper to maintain.

In the years following 2008, car and automotive companies have concentrated their efforts and resources to manufacture cars that can be driven by city residents. Apart from that, global warming and energy crisis have promoted the general automobile market trend to shift its focus on energy-efficient and smaller cars, hybrids and fuel cell SUVs. The once-exploded size of the SUV has thus, become smaller and an entire range of mid-size SUV models have been launched.

As of 2011, the SUV market has sustained the trend of such smaller and energy-efficient vehicles, which promoted the manufacturers to launch a lot of 2011 upgrades and models. Better fuel economy, lower running costs, small and maneuverable sizes are some of the features which have made these SUVs very popular and several car buyers are preferring the mid-sized ones over the common, conventional and larger ones. The following is a small list of the models that have been launched recently.

Best Mid-size SUV List

Such SUVs are not just affordable, but in fact, they are also quite luxurious and often loaded with sophisticated technology. However, this list is concentrated around 3 aspects, namely, engine capacity, size of the car and lastly the usability of the car.

1. Chevrolet Equinox
The Equinox is a clear winner in most of the comparison charts and many consumers tend to buy it for everyday use. People living and commuting in the metropolitan localities and towns can enjoy a very nice 2.4 liter engine and 6 speed transmission, which gives this SUV a very nice maneuverability. The Mazda CX-7 has a really cute 2.5 liter engine and a 5 speed automatic transmission that gives the car a really good maneuverability and not to mention, a really cool mileage. The second combination that buyers can avail is equally good and features a 2.3 liters turbocharged engine and 6 speed transmission. Both models have an equally good safety system featuring air bags and side impact curtains. This vehicle is probably best suited for people living in a crowded locality.

4. BMW X3 XDRIVE30i
If you are looking for more power, then this BMW is a perfect cowboy's horse. At 3.0 liters and 6 cylinders, this mean machine will give you an output of 260 horsepower. Some of the advanced features of this car include, the XDrive technology and an intelligent all wheel drive system.

5. Ford Edge
Another SUV that has a high engine capacity is the Ford Edge. This car has a monstrous 3.5 liter engine with a 6 speed automatic transmission system. The safety at the same time has not been compromised. The car is equipped with 6 air bags and has an enforced steel cage.

Mid-Size SUVs with Good Ratings

The following is a summary of some more automobiles which have good ratings in the market and are widely available. Most of these are priced around $35, 000. These SUVs can range from $25,000 to $40,000. However you will have to inquire with your locality's dealers as giving an accurate cost is almost impossible. The price is bound to change dynamically as per the location, market conditions and time.
