Career › Data Protection 101 For Startups And MSMEs by EliSedai(op): 10:43pm On Oct 21, 2025
Small businesses often assume data protection rules are only for big corporations.

Wrong ❌

The reality: the Nigerian Data Protection Act 2023 (NDPA) applies to many organisations operating in Nigeria either small or large, and non-compliance puts your business at risk of incurring fines, losing customer trust, and operational headaches.

Don't panic though, I have prepared a simple, low-cost starting plan specifically for you. Here's NDPA 101 for Nigerian SMEs and startups:

1. Start with the basics📝: figure out what personal data you collect, where it lives, and why you need it. Carrying out a quick data inventory (names, phones, emails, payroll records, customer orders) will reveal obvious risks and unnecessary data hoarding. It's important that you always use plain language, ignore the urge to overcomplicate the inventory.

2. Next, assign responsibility👨🏾‍💻. You might not need a full-time Data Protection Officer (DPO), but name someone accountable for privacy tasks (even if it’s you, the founder, a senior engineer or the operations manager). This person will keep the inventory, handle requests, and own basic policies.

3. Thirdly, implement these three simple controls🔒: a short privacy notice for customers, a minimal consent capture for marketing, and basic access controls (password policies, Multi-factor authentication, and role limits). These cover most early compliance gaps and protect you from obvious mistakes.

Remember 💡:
- Inventory of personal data
- Simple privacy notice
- Owner/DPO named
- Basic access control
- Consent capture for marketing.

These are low-cost but high-impact moves.
