Politics / IPOB Withdraws Threat To Stop Anambra Election by eloti: 8:52pm On Aug 19, 2017
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has reportedly withdrawn its threat to stop the November 18 Anambra governorship election following a meeting IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu held with the leadership of a non-governmental organisation, Ala Igbo Development Foundation in Owerri, the Imo State capital yesterday.

Kanu, shortly after the meeting said, ““I came because of my respect for elders. IPOB is not a violent group. We are law abiding citizens of the society. What we agreed here today will guide us in the issue of Anambra election. I will go and meet with the leadership of IPOB.”

Eligible voters in Anambra have therefore been advised to go out and exercise their franchise without fear of molestation.

In his speech, the President of Ala Igbo Development Foundation, Professor Uzodimma Nwala, said that it was the first meeting with the IPOB leader on the boycott order on Anambra guber.

Nwala said: “As you see in our midst, you see our brother Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, we have come to discuss the issue of mutual concern, especially on Anambra election. We are happy he is here with us.

“As we know the IPOB decision on boycott of election and you know that IPOB is an orgarnised group and the agitations born out of marginalization of the Igbo.

“We are glad he has explained to us the reason they issued the boycott order and that it is not his personal decision but that of the IPOB leadership. We are meeting for the first time and will still meet again. No decision has been taken.”

Crime / 2 Days To Wedding, Policeman Kills Groom Over Missing Iphone by eloti: 10:55am On Jan 02, 2017
A Malaysian-based Nigerian, Friday Nduka, who returned home in preparation for his wedding scheduled for today, was reportedly shot dead by a police inspector, Mike Edem, attached to the NNPC Filling Station at the Control Post Junction, Owerri, Imo State, Monday.

According to reports, the deceased, who hailed from Oguta Local Government Area of the state, had driven into the filling station to buy petrol, but in the course of the transaction, he had an altercation with one of the pump attendants over his missing iPhone 7, valued at N400,000.

An eyewitness said that the argument degenerated into a fight, which left the pump attendant badly injured. He said it took the intervention of the manager of the fuel station, Ruth Enemmuo, and the fiancée of the deceased to restore calm. According to the source, as soon as the deceased entered his car to leave the scene, the police inspector, who was still furious about the incident, fired gun shots at the deceased’s vehicle, shattering the windows and doors.

The shot was said to have also hit Nduka, leaving him in a pool of blood. When the policeman saw that the man was dead, he was said to have quickly escaped from the premises. IG orders investigation When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer for the state, Andrew Enwerem, confirmed the incident and described the action of the inspector as very unruly and uncalled for. Enwerem stated that the Inspector General of Police had mandated the state Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, to make sure that the fleeing inspector was apprehended and justice done.

He commiserated with the family of the deceased over what he described as an unfortunate incident. Meanwhile, the manager of the filling station has been arrested for further interrogation, while the concerned pump attendant was, however, said to have fled. The state Police Command has declared the killer-policeman, Inspector Mike Edem, wanted.

Crime / Apapa Mob Action: Police Under Pressure To-arrest Killers Of LASTMA Officer by eloti: 10:49am On Jan 02, 2017
The Lagos State Police Command may have been subjected to intense pressure by the State Government to fish out the killers of an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Surajudeen Olatunji Bakare who was brutally killed by irate mob in Apapa on December 15, 2016.

Credible sources in the State Ministry of Justice confirmed on Thursday that the government has already written to the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni demanding the arrest of the culprits. The letter was said to have been written following the failure of the police to arrest the perpetrators of the dastardly act despite the fact that the video had already gone viral on the internet with faces of the culprits.

Late Bakare Bakare, a level 14 officer, was said to have been attacked by the irate mob who removed his two eyes and stabbed him after which he was stoned to death. A source who does not want to be named confirmed the existence of the letter, saying that it was dated December 28 and written by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Adeniji Kazeem.

According to the letter which was obtained by our Correspondent on Thursday, Kazeem said it was important for the police to promptly fish out the perpetrators of the dastardly act and turn them in to face neccesary legal action. Kazeem said: “The late Bakare was a LASTMA official who was in Apapa area of the State executing his lawful duties and it was in exercising this duty that he was attacked and murdered by persons that have apparently been visually recorded and same circulated on social media.

“This is a crime that is clearly an affront to civilization and the sustenance of law and order which the administration of His Excellency, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, has sworn to uphold. “The Lagos State Government demands that the perpetrators of this dastardly crime be arrested, investigated and the case file promptly sent to this office for Legal Advice,” Kazeem said. He added that his office, as usual, would be available to provide any assistance required by the police, but requested that the matter be treated with the urgency that it demands.

Business / Nigerians Demand N100,000 Minimum Wage by eloti: 9:51am On Jan 02, 2017
Hard pressed by the biting economic recession a cross section of Nigerian workers has said that only a significant review of the nation’s minimum wage would ameliorate the suffering of workers in the country.
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige had recently restated Federal Government’s readiness to raise the minimum wage which currently stands at N18, 000 while the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ayuba Waba said the labour union had settled for N56, 000.
But a section of Nigerians who spoke to Sunday Sun said the proposal by the NLC was grossly inadequate considering the inflationary trend in the country.
A civil servant, Mrs. Judith Adimefe said since the prices of goods and services had more than quadrupled since the minimum wage was fixed for N18,000, only a minimum wage in the region of N100,000.00 would ease the suffering of the Nigerian workers.
“As at the time the minimum wage of N18,000.00 was agreed, prices of food items, for instance, were still within the reach of the common people. For instance, a bottle of groundnut oil which was sold for N100.00 about three to four years ago, now sells for N600.00, an increase of 500 per cent. The same goes for other food items like rice, garri, pepper etc. It is only logical to say that the government should consider an upward review of 500 per cent to the current minimum wage. By this, they should be looking at N100, 000.00 for the least paid person in the country,” she said.
Speaking in the same vein, Mr. Ephraim Oladele, a school teacher, described the current minimum wage as too demeaning and dehumanising, saying no Nigerian can survive on N18,000 monthly pay. “Anytime the minimum wage is mentioned, what comes to my mind is how possible is it for anybody to survive in Nigeria of today with N18,000; not even a five-year old child. It is very demeaning and dehumanising for any adult to go home with N18,000 as salary at the end of the month. What can he or she do with that?” he queried adding that, “no Nigerian worker deserves anything less than N100,000.00 monthly pay.”
Another Nigerian, Abdulrasheed Usman, warned the government and the organised labour to tread cautiously on the issue of minimum wage, saying the current minimum wage proposal could be counterproductive if not properly handled.
Usman, who observed that the upward review of minimum wage could further worsen inflationary rate in the country, said the current minimum wage was a mockery of the dignity of labour. “To say that the national minimum wage is too small is an understatement; it is indeed a mockery of dignity of labour. Rather than clamour for salary increment which is most likely to push inflation higher further, I would suggest the government looks inwards to see how it can reduce the burden of Nigerian workers in the areas of accommodation and transportation because these are the two major areas an average Nigerian worker spends the larger chunk of his salary. But where the government fails to do this, an average Nigerian worker will need to earn a wage of nothing less than N100,000.00 to be able to live a relatively decent life,” he said.
