Fellaini's obvious lack of creativity is apparent however, his awareness, off the ball movement and anticipation has been better than Herrera.
And he doesn't look like a kid out there unlike Herrera because he often uses his big stature to his advantage. Fellaini's average technical skills may let him down but his physicality doesn't and he uses it quite well.
My conclusion is both of them (Herrera and Fellaini) shouldn't be starting for Manutd but I would take Fellaini over Herrera any day except maybe against teams that are unlikely to press our midfield which is quite rare.

Because Herrera, the turn over machine was the reason we got overrun in the midfield against Westbrom and Watford. He was totally awful and looked like a sunday league player who couldn't pass the ball accurately nor control the ball.
At no time did we ever get overrun with Carrick and Fellaini in the midfield, it's just that Fellaini's quickness of thought is just too slow and he has little creativity in his arsenal to make us tick well in the attacks. Apart from this, he's been quite better than the pathetic Herrera who only turns up against teams that affords him plenty of space in the midfield.

Except if Carrick never gets injured.
He only tends to thinker the line-ups whenever Carrick is injured and the needs to find a substitute replacement for him becomes tedious and once Schneiderlin failed to perform well in the said role, he gets dropped.
After Carrick returns to the team, LVG finds it difficult to deploy Schneiderlin alongside Carrick, probably due to the grudges he still harboured against Morgan for his poor display and the cycles repeat itself.
I'm just hoping that the midfield's vibrant display against City would lessen his stubbornness. Special mention to Lingard, who's pace, quickness, intelligent movement and awareness in the midfield has been a refreshment in the midfield as opposed to a certain Mata.

There was no quality midfielder in the market in the last window though. None that I know of.
As per Fellaini, I guess he loves Fellaini's off the ball movement. Outside Lingard and Rashford in the team, Fellaini off the ball movement is one of best in the squad although his technical skills are quite average.
I actually think LVG is a coach who is impatient with players and believes once a player failed to perform, he should be dropped no matter who you are. Even captain Rooney got unexpectedly dropped at one time. My point is that once Schneiderlin performed poorly (admitted it was in the holding midfield role), Lvg believed he deserve to be dropped from the team.
I hope the last the game has convinced him that the midfield of Carrick/Bastian and Schneiderlin is the way forward if he intends to get to a top 4 finish.

He did sign Bastian, who's capable of operating well in the holding midfield role. If he hadn't got injury, him and Schneiderlin would have become a main stay in the midfield like Germany midfield of Bastian and Khedira or the Bayern midfield of Javi Martinez and Bastian which won the treble...
I wouldn't even say he made a mistake on Schneiderlin signing but Bastian injury spoiled his plan.
Also, there was no quality midfielder in the market apart from Bastian in the last window

That's when you consider the average dutch team at his disposal but one thing the dutch players can do well is pass the ball well which is the opposite of our players. The dutch team never remained the same as soon as he left them though. That tells something.
As per the transfers, he did sign Schneiderlin but failed to realise he had signed a box-box midfielder, not a holding midfielder. Big mistake on his part.

Until he's allowed to get his own midfielders other than the likes of Mata, Fellaini and Herrera who were dumped on him, I won't judge him.
The likes of Martial, Rashford, Lingard doesn't look out of place in his system and he knows the importance of the holding midfield role except that he has no one capable of operating there apart from the aged Carrick.

First and foremost, we need a holding midfielder with good passing skills and technique to replace Carrick.
I already mentioned that Dortmund downfall under Klopp happened as soon as Sahin got a severe injury last season. Do you know the first player Tuchel recruited into his starting 11 as soon as he took over, it was Weigl, an holding midfielder. The Dortmund team remains unchanged from the previous Klopp's team apart from Weigl. That's to tell you how important the holding midfield role is.
We also needs a creative playmaker who has spectacular vision, pace and can operate well in tight spaces, I would go for Verratti but he's not attainable. One of Pjanic or Insigne would do though.
A ball playing centre back and a winger (either of Dembele, Mahrez or Mane) would complete the jigsaw.
