The judge, Beryl Howell, made the order on Tuesday, saying that protecting the information from public disclosure is “neither logical nor plausible.” ByKabir Yusuf April 13, 2025 Reading Time: 5 mins read The United States District Court for the District of Columbia has ordered top US law enforcement agencies to release confidential information generated on President Bola Tinubu during a “purported federal investigation in the 1990s.” The judge, Beryl Howell, made the order on Tuesday, saying that protecting the information from public disclosure is “neither logical nor plausible.” An American, Aaron Greenspan, had filed a suit in June 2023 under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) against the Executive Office for US Attorneys, Department of State, Federal Bureau of Investigation(FBI), Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). In his complaint, Mr Greenspan accused the law enforcement agencies of violating the FOIA by failing to release within the statutory time “documents relating to purported federal investigations into” President Tinubu and one Abiodun Agbele. Between 2022 and 2023, Mr Greenspan filed 12 FOIA requests with six different US government agencies and components seeking information about a joint investigation conducted by the FBI, IRS, DEA, and the US Attorney’s Offices for the Northern District of Indiana and Northern District of Illinois. According to Mr Greenspan, the records being requested involved charging decisions on the activities, including money laundering, of a Chicago heroin ring that operated in the early 1990s. In each FOIA request, the American sought criminal investigative records about four named individuals “allegedly associated with the drug ring: Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Lee Andrew Edwards, Mueez Abegboyega Akande, and Abiodun Agbele.” After the requests, all five US agencies issued “Glomar responses”, refusing to confirm or deny whether the requested records exist. Mr Greenspan contested those responses at the Department of Justice’s Office of Information Policy (“OIP”). The OIP, however, affirmed the agencies’ refusal to confirm or deny the existence of the requested records. The American then filed a lawsuit on 12 June 2023, naming the FBI, DEA, IRS, EOUSA, and Department of State as defendants and challenging each agency’s response to the separate FOIA requests. Court documents show that the CIA was later added as a defendant in the First Amended Complaint, along with a challenge to that agency’s glomar response to the plaintiff’s FOIA request. On 20 October 2023, Mr Greenspan filed an emergency motion seeking a hearing to compel the US agencies to immediately produce records responsive to his FOIA requests. He cited the Nigerian Supreme Court’s plan to begin hearing arguments in three days’ time in a litigation contesting Mr Tinubu’s 2023 election as the President of Nigeria. Three days later, on 23 October 2023, Mr Greenspan’s emergency motion was denied for failing to “satisfy any of the requirements for emergency injunctive relief.” Also on that same day, President Tinubu moved to intervene in the case, citing his privacy interests in his “confidential tax records” and “documents from federal law enforcement agencies that fall within the Privacy Act or exceptions to FOIA and should not be disclosed.” In 1993, Mr Tinubu was said to have forfeited $460,000 to the American government after authorities linked the funds to proceeds of narcotics trafficking. The issue of Mr Tinubu’s forfeiture of the funds featured prominently at the Presidential Election Petition Court when his opponents, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, challenged the president’s eligibility to contest Nigeria’s presidency. But the election court, in a unanimous decision, dismissed the suits, affirming Mr Tinubu’s election. However, on Tuesday, Judge Howell ruled partly in favour of Mr Greenspan in the US case |
You probably must have heard about the incident at Uromi,Edo State, on Thursday, where a local vigilante group, intercepted a group of northerners in a Dangote truck and discovered large numbers of guns in their possession. The question following that incident was,who were those people, and what was their mission, and what were they doing with guns? President Bola Tinubu seems to have answered that question quite succinctly. Please hear him, according to news reports: •President Bola Tinubu has condemned the murder of travelling hunters intercepted by members of a local vigilance group in Uromi community of Esan North Local Government of Edo. •The president, who expressed shock at the dastardly act on Thursday, directed the police and other security agencies to conduct swift and thorough investigations and punish the suspected culprits. -- Did you read very well? They were HUNTERS!They travelled all the way from the North,or wherever, to HUNT in the South! Such expedition. You see,Nigeria will never get better, the way this country is going. The people in power are more interested in protecting their seats, and the future elections than speaking the truth. Those group of men could've been a team of criminals usually deployed by those Fulani leaders to attack and ravage communities,or perhaps a bunch of kidnappers for ransom, heading to a location in the South to perpetrate their evil acts. The question is,of all the places they passed in the course of their travel, before being intercepted at Uromi, there was no forest to hunt? All the animals ran for cover down south, and intelligence report told the "travelling hunters" the location of the animals! President Tinubu from the reports, already said they are hunters, yet is demanding for an investigation. Why investigate again when you already know who they're? It is sadly instructive to note that everyday in Northern Nigeria, Christians are slaughtered, but have you ever seen any empathy from the Nigerian government? They were hunters indeed. Good news for the animals they would've shot and killed in the bush. There's now a sure reprieve for them. This Nigeria! |
gidgiddy:They need the police to arrest him from Lagos to Ekiti where justice can be bought as the complainant is well know there and have strong influence in the state…what a confused justice system Well if correction is in the hand of who committed the wrong to whom shall we complain |
Israel’s military is “conducting precise strikes on military targets in Iran,” it said in a statement early on Saturday local time, after reports emerged of explosions heard in Tehran. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that the strikes are a response to Iran, which has been “relentlessly attacking” Israel since October 7th “on seven fronts – including direct attacks from Iranian soil.” “Like every other sovereign country in the world, the State of Israel has the right and the duty to respond,” the statement added. The IDF also warned that its “defensive and offensive capabilities are fully mobilized.” Remember: Earlier in October, Iran fired a barrage of missiles at Israel after the killing of Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah and others. The region has been bracing for Israel’s response for weeks. |
Israel's military says that, "like every other sovereign country in the world, the State of Israel has the right and the duty to respond", due to "the regime in Iran and its proxies in the region... relentlessly attacking Israel" since 7 October 2023. "Our defensive and offensive capabilities are fully mobilized," the military says. "We will do whatever necessary to defend the State of Israel and the people of Israel," it adds. |
UPDATE ON THE OUTAGE IN THE NORTH: TCN PRESS RELEASE "330kV DC Transmission Line Tripping that Caused Power Outage in North East, North West, and Parts of North Central. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reports that its 330kV Ugwaji–Apir Double Circuit transmission lines1&2, tripped due to a fault, resulting in a forced power outage affecting the North East, North West and parts of North Central. At approximately 4:53am, the Ugwuaji–Markurdi 330kV Line 2 tripped and 243 MW on that line was transferred to Line 1 on the same route. At 4:58am, Line 1 also tripped, resulting in a total loss of 468 MW. By around 5:15am and 5:17am Line 1 and Line 2 were tried, but they all tripped immediately on the same relay indication. Following the tripping incidents yesterday, two teams of linesmen were dispatched. One from the Apir Transmission Sub-Region and another from the Enugu transmission to expedite fault tracing along the 215 km route, which includes 245 transmission towers. Throughout yesterday, the Apir team patrolled the line, navigating challenging terrains in search of the fault, reaching as far as the River Benue. They were unable to locate the cause of the tripping and have continued in the fault tracing early this morning. Meanwhile, the lines patrol team from Enugu Region of TCN were unable to commence lines patrol yesterday due to the ‘sit-at-home’ directive in the South East for October 21st and 22nd, 2024. This hindered not only the patrol team but also made it difficult to refuel patrol vehicles for the long distance line trace. Arrangements were, however, made for security operatives to guide the team, who have commenced fault tracing this morning. Currently, TCN has restored supply to the 132kV transmission line from New Haven to Apir, but the 330kV lines remain out of service, impacting power supply in the Northern region of the country. Sadly, the TCN Shiroro-Mando transmission line is also down due to security reasons, causing power outage in the North. TCN is making every effort to trace the cause of the outage to enable our engineers effect repairs and restore bulk power supply through both lines. We sincerely apologize to the government and electricity consumers in all the affected states and acknowledge that our patrol teams would have continued their search into the night yesterday, if not for the challenging terrain, which includes swamps and rivers, as well as insecure areas in the forest. We reconvened very early this morning with security operatives and have continued the fault tracing to locate and address the cause of the line tripping. Ndidi Mbah GM, Public Affairs 22/10/24" |
A Federal High Court in Kano has halted the scheduled local government elections in the state, previously set for Saturday, October 26, and dissolved the membership of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC). Justice Simon Ameboda, while delivering judgment yesterday in a case filed by Aminu Aliyu Tiga and the All Progressives Congress (APC), ruled that KANSIEC’s chairman and five commissioners were ineligible for their roles. He stated that they were involved in partisan politics as members of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), which violates sections 197(1)(b) and 200(1)(a) of the 1999 Constitution, as well as Section 4 of the KANSIEC Law 2001. The chairman of KANSIEC, Professor Sani Lawal Malumfashi, and commissioners Muktar Garba Dandago, Isyaku Ibrahim Kunya, Kabiru Jibrin Zakirai, and Amina Inuwa Fagge, were found to be card-carrying members of the NNPP. The court deemed this unconstitutional, making them ineligible to serve on the electoral commission. |
