My friend Boma got married in December. Beautiful girl, Boma. Delta State girl with the kind of smile that can settle an argument. Her husband Chukwuemeka — Emeka for short — is Anambra. The wedding was in Lagos. Everything about this story is very Nigerian, so stay with me.

I was one of her chief bridesmaids. So I was in the inner circle. I saw everything. And I am here to tell you exactly what happened, because I think many of you are about to make the same mistake she almost made.

Three weeks before the wedding, Boma's aunty — Aunty Chisom, the organised one in the family — suggested they create a WhatsApp group where people could send wedding messages and contributions for the couple. Beautiful idea. Very thoughtful.

The group started with 30 people. Then 60. Then 112. Then somehow 200 and something. I do not know how Nigerians find their way into groups but they always do.

At first it was sweet. People were sending beautiful messages. "May your home be filled with joy." "God will bless your union." "Emeka you better treat our daughter well o!" The usual. Boma was screenshotting everything and smiling.

Then the chaos started.

First it was Uncle Biodun from Ibadan who sent a voice note that was eleven minutes long. Eleven. Minutes. In a group of 200 people. Then five people replied to the voice note with their own voice notes. Then someone started arguing that the wedding date clashed with a football match. Then another person was asking for the account number for the asoebi. Then someone's child somehow sent 47 stickers in a row.

By the time Boma tried to go back and find the heartfelt message her grandmother sent from the village — the one Mama wrote in broken English with so much love it made everyone cry — it was completely buried. Gone. Swallowed by arguments about aso-ebi colours and voice notes from people nobody could identify.

She called me crying one night. Not wedding stress crying. Genuine grief crying. "Uju, I cannot find what Mama wrote. I have been scrolling for one hour."

We scrolled together for another 45 minutes. We never found it.

Boma's younger sister, Tari — small girl, big brain, the one who is always on her phone — was watching us scroll and said very quietly: "You know there is a better way to do this, right?"

Tari had attended a friend's wedding in Port Harcourt where the bride did something different. Instead of a WhatsApp group, she used a platform called Thankeeu

When Emeka heard it on their wedding night, he had to go to the bathroom for five minutes. His mother told me later that Baba had recorded it four times before he was satisfied. Four times. The man who never cries, recorded four voice notes for his son's wedding card.

Their friend in Birmingham sent a video of herself and four other of Boma's university friends singing a wedding song they composed themselves. A whole song. With harmonies. Because they could attach it directly to the card.

Now here is the part that really got everybody.

You know how Nigerian weddings have the contribution issue. People want to give money but the logistics are always scattered. Someone posts an account number, 40 people send to different accounts, someone's transfer bounces, another person sends the wrong amount, the couple is trying to reconcile payments during their honeymoon.

But it was the most human moment I have ever witnessed at a wedding.

Because from what I've seen across companies in Lagos, it falls into one of these categories:
The WhatsApp Collection Method

Someone creates a group or sends a broadcast. People send money to one person's personal account. That person manually tracks who has and hasn't sent. Chases people. Eventually buys something. Very stressful, very manual, very dependent on one person's goodwill.
The Paper Card Method

HR prints or buys a card, it goes desk to desk for signatures. For remote or hybrid teams this is basically impossible. By the time the card gets back half the people have left for the day. Some people write the same generic "happy birthday!" because they don't know the person well.
The Do Nothing Method

The company just ignores it. No card, no collection, nothing. Employee feels invisible. Affects morale and retention.
The Expensive HR Software Method

The problem: organising 25 women on WhatsApp is harder than organising a small country.

I couldn't add everyone to a WhatsApp group because she'd see it. I couldn't send a broadcast because some of her friends have her on their broadcast list and she'd hear about it. One of her friends almost ruined everything in 2021 when someone screenshot a surprise party planning group and sent it to the person.

UPDATE: For your birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers, convocations , weddings and so on, there is a webapp called https://Thankeeu.com now that you can use to collect heartfelt messages, wishes, voice notes, videos, GIFs, pictures and gifts all in one place through a simple sharable link, instead of having them scattered all over social media every year.

We miss a lot of important messages, and gifts on our birthdays. It works in and out of Nigeria and accepts naira payments. There are other alternatives like Thankbox.com, but it's too complicated for our setting.
