Human rights lawyer, Tope Temokun, has accused the Nigeria Police Force of engaging in what he described as “a murder plot in disguise” against activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore.

In a strongly worded statement released on Thursday, Temokun alleged that the events following Sowore’s invitation to the Force Headquarters by the Inspector-General of Police’s (IGP) Monitoring Team amounted to “state terrorism” rather than lawful policing.

Naija Blog reports that United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc is currently facing a ₦1 billion lawsuit for allegedly releasing the confidential bank records of a deceased customer, Sir (Dr.) Charles Oladeinde Williams, and his widow, to unauthorized individuals.

The lawsuit, filed by Mrs. Iyabo Fadairo, Mr. Lanre Omotade, and Mrs. Gloria Obafunke Williams, the legally appointed executors of Sir Charles’ estate, is before Justice Lewis Allagoa of the Federal High Court, Lagos.

How UBA Is Entangled
According to court documents seen by Naija Blog, UBA allegedly released sensitive financial documents to three of the deceased’s relatives — Omolara, Olawale, and Temitope Oladeinde Williams — and a police officer, ASP Sunday Oyegbata, without proper authorization or a valid court order. The Inspector General of Police is also named as a co-defendant in the matter.

The contested documents reportedly include:

Two years’ worth of statements for Sir Charles’ current account (2019–2022)

Three years of joint account statements with his widow (2018–2022)

Signature mandate forms for the joint account

Eleven months of statements from another personal savings account

The plaintiffs argue that they obtained probate in December 2022, legally authorizing them to manage the deceased’s estate, yet UBA allegedly bypassed them in releasing these sensitive records.

Breach of Privacy & Data Protection Laws
In his affidavit, Mr. Omotade, a Canada-based plaintiff, stressed that UBA’s actions breached their constitutional right to privacy, as enshrined in Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution and Section 30 of the Data Protection Act 2023.

“The bank owes us a fiduciary duty and a duty of care. By releasing these sensitive financial records, UBA breached both obligations and violated our privacy rights,” Omotade stated.

He further disclosed that multiple pre-action legal notices were sent to UBA starting in July 2023 through their lawyers, Bamidele Ibironke & Co., but the bank allegedly failed to respond or provide outcomes of any internal investigation.

Emotional & Reputational Damage
The plaintiffs allege that the unauthorized disclosure has led to embarrassment, emotional distress, and reputational harm, as their private financial dealings have now been exposed.

Additionally, the plaintiffs accuse ASP Oyegbata of fraudulently using his office to procure the bank records, allegedly for purposes of harassment and defamation.

Reliefs Sought By Plaintiffs
In their lawsuit, the plaintiffs are seeking:

A declaration that UBA breached their constitutional and statutory privacy rights.

A declaration that UBA violated its fiduciary and professional duty of care.

₦1 billion in general damages from UBA for alleged negligence and reckless conduct.

A declaration that the 2nd to 6th defendants, including the IGP and ASP Oyegbata, breached their privacy rights by unlawfully obtaining their bank records.

An order directing the other defendants to each pay ₦1 billion in damages for their roles in the alleged breach.

UBA's Previous Controversy
This is not the first time UBA is making headlines for controversial financial practices. Naija Blog recalls that Ibhahe Hope Ehieribo, a U.S.-based Nigerian, recently accused the bank of unlawfully withdrawing over ₦106 million from his account based on a false claim of his death. After public backlash, UBA refunded the money.

Next Court Date
The case against UBA and the other defendants has been adjourned to July 22, 2025, as the plaintiffs seek not only compensation but also judicial clarification on the responsibilities of banks in protecting customer data
