The phrase “Trump Is Dead” has been trending on X (formerly Twitter) in recent days, sparking confusion, speculation, and heated debate online. Despite the widespread buzz, no official announcement has been made regarding former President Donald Trump’s health or status. Instead, the trend appears to be fueled by a combination of recent political remarks, Trump’s health updates, and a controversial comment from The Simpsons creator, Matt Groening. How It Started The timing of the trend coincided with Vice President JD Vance’s interview with USA Today on August 27. During the interview, Vance was asked if he was prepared to assume the presidency should a “terrible tragedy” occur. In response, Vance praised Trump’s stamina, describing him as the last person to make calls at night and the first to start working in the morning. Still, his acknowledgment that “terrible tragedies happen” ignited speculation online about Trump’s health and mortality. “Yes, terrible tragedies happen. But I feel very confident the president of the United States is in good shape, is going to serve out the remainder of his term and do great things for the American people,” Vance said. “And if, God forbid, there’s a terrible tragedy, I can’t think of better on-the-job training than what I’ve gotten over the last 200 days.” Trump’s Age and Health Concerns At 79, Trump is the oldest person ever sworn in as president, a fact that continues to spark debate about his fitness for office. JD Vance, meanwhile, is one of the youngest vice presidents in U.S. history — an age gap that has drawn attention to succession questions. The White House confirmed in July that Trump was diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a vein condition that causes swelling in the legs. Photos of his swollen legs had already circulated online, fueling speculation even before the official statement. Despite this, aides and allies insist Trump remains active, energetic, and fully capable of performing his duties. Supporters frequently cite his long work hours and high energy levels as proof that concerns are exaggerated. Adding to the tension, Trump also survived two assassination attempts during his campaign, further intensifying public conversations about his health and safety. The Simpsons Connection The rumor gained even more traction after comments by The Simpsons creator, Matt Groening, at San Diego Comic-Con in July. When asked about the show’s future, Groening joked: “No, there’s no end in sight. We’re going to keep going. We’re going to go until somebody dies. When you-know-who dies, The Simpsons predicts there will be dancing in the streets. Except President (J.D.) Vance will ban dancing.” The remark stirred controversy because The Simpsons has a history of eerily accurate predictions about Trump — including his rise to the presidency in 2000 and a storyline suggesting his re-election years later. Past False Alarms This is not the first time rumors about Trump’s death have spread online. In September 2023, Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., had his X account hacked. The hacker falsely announced Trump’s death and claimed Trump Jr. would run for president in his place. The claim was quickly debunked when Trump posted on Truth Social to confirm he was alive. What If a Sitting President Dies in Office? The U.S. Constitution provides a clear line of succession in the event of a president’s death. Under the 25th Amendment, the vice president automatically assumes the presidency and serves the remainder of the term. No immediate election is required. If both the president and vice president are unable to serve, the line of succession continues with the Speaker of the House, followed by the Senate president pro tempore, and then Cabinet members beginning with the Secretary of State. This process has precedent: When President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in within hours. Similarly, after Franklin D. Roosevelt’s death in 1945, Vice President Harry S. Truman took over as president. The 25th Amendment also covers scenarios where a president is alive but unable to perform duties due to illness, allowing the vice president to act as president until recovery. Bottom Line For now, the viral phrase “Trump Is Dead” is nothing more than a rumor fueled by speculation, public remarks, and social media frenzy. Donald Trump remains alive, active, and in office, despite ongoing debates about his age, health, and the future of his presidency. Lagos, Nigeria – Polaris Bank has come under scrutiny over the handling of a staff loan inherited from the defunct Skye Bank, leaving a former employee, Mr. Ude, in financial distress after acting as a guarantor for a loan granted nearly a decade ago. According to an investigation by OnSpotNewsNG, Mr. Ude, who worked in the Information and Technology department at Skye Bank’s Broad Street Branch in 2015, served as one of two guarantors for a staff loan of ₦2,205,000 granted to his colleague, Mr. Jacobs Adeyinka Alexander. The loan was obtained in November 2015. However, not long after securing the loan, Mr. Jacobs resigned from the bank. His resignation was accepted by Skye Bank’s Human Capital Management (HCM) without notifying the guarantors. After defaulting on payments, Mr. Jacobs reportedly sought a restructuring of the loan—again, without involving the guarantors. It wasn’t until Jacobs failed to meet his repayment obligations post-restructuring that Mr. Ude was contacted by the bank. Guarantor Under Pressure Faced with threats of salary deductions and account debits, Mr. Ude said he was coerced into adopting and restructuring the loan. The bank allegedly imposed repayment terms on him, including a 24-month repayment period, zero interest, and deductions from his staff savings account (1020245278). Loan recovery efforts were reportedly led by Mr. Tunji Bajowa and Mr. Fidelis of Polaris Bank, headquartered at the Churchgate Building, Victoria Island. Mr. Ude claimed that his questions regarding recovery efforts and loan terms were misinterpreted as threats, raising concerns about transparency in the process. Disturbing Account Debits In October 2018, a negative balance of ₦2.5 million appeared in Mr. Ude’s account, which the bank later said was linked to Mr. Jacobs' unpaid loan. Despite being terminated from the bank in April 2019 under a “service no longer required” notice, Mr. Ude continued to make payments, reducing the balance to ₦1.2 million. However, by October 2024, his account showed a staggering negative balance of ₦8.39 million, including a monthly capital interest of over ₦248,000—despite prior agreements that the restructured loan would be interest-free. He insists he never agreed to or was informed about such interest accumulation and questions why the amount continues to rise even after consistent payments. Lack of Recovery from Original Debtor Further investigations revealed that Mr. Jacobs had since moved to Unity Bank, yet Mr. Ude claims the bank made no visible efforts to recover the loan from him. Instead, he remains the sole target for recovery, with debt recovery firm Mida Africa Ltd now involved. Despite repeated attempts to reach Mr. Jacobs and bank officials for a resolution, Mr. Ude says all efforts have fallen on deaf ears. His appeals for fairness and clarity have gone unanswered, leaving him burdened by a growing debt he did not incur. Call for Action Mr. Ude believes he has suffered unjustly for nearly a decade and is calling for Polaris Bank and Mr. Jacobs Adeyinka Alexander to address the matter transparently and equitably. "This has destroyed my finances and career," he said. “All I want is justice and a chance to move forward without this unnecessary burden.” The situation has raised broader concerns over how inherited liabilities are managed by successor institutions, and how guarantors—often co-workers—can be left vulnerable when proper processes are not followed. Polaris Bank is yet to respond officially to these allegations as of the time of filing this report. The United Bank for Africa (UBA) is currently facing internal unrest following serious accusations from contract staff at its Customer Fulfilment Center (CFC) in Lagos. According to reports the employees claim they are victims of harassment, bullying, and unethical conduct by their supervisors. These grievances were outlined in a strongly-worded email sent anonymously under the alias “Flourish Adeleke” on March 28. Addressed to UBA Chairman Tony Elumelu and copied to senior executives, the email painted a troubling picture of staff welfare and management practices at the CFC. The fallout was swift, with reports indicating that at least 10 staff members suspected of involvement with the message were immediately locked out of the bank’s systems. FIJ obtained the email titled: “Lack of Acknowledgement and Employee Welfare, Maltreatment and Bullying of Staff, Unsafe Working Conditions & Threat to Life, Unfair & Arbitrary Punishments, Unrealistic Targets and Excessive Workload, Verbal Abuse, and Hostile Leadership.” The message named Uzoamaka Onyeka, Head of UBA CFC, and Oluchi Akaeme, Manager of the CFC Unbound Unit, as key figures allegedly creating a toxic and intimidating work environment. Despite being on contract, the complainants argued they deserved to be treated with dignity and respect. Instead, they described a workplace characterized by verbal abuse and threats. According to the email, Oluchi frequently made intimidating comments, such as “you’ve seen nothing yet,” while Uzo reportedly used demeaning terms like “goats” to describe staff. In a follow-up email sent days later, the whistleblowers shared additional examples of mistreatment. Staff with low performance scores were allegedly subjected to public humiliation, with their photos posted alongside mocking titles such as “Fatal King,” “Fatal Queen,” and “King/Queen of Escalations.” One of the more alarming claims involved a weekend incident where all employees were forced to surrender their mobile phones. According to the report, Oluchi and Uzo—who were not scheduled to work—demanded the phones without explanation, locked them away for the weekend, and only returned them the following Monday. Some employees had to return on their days off just to collect their devices. Another disturbing allegation involved a security officer named Enoch, who was said to carry out intrusive late-night patrols, removing staff from the premises under the pretext of unauthorized presence—even in the middle of the night. The email was reportedly circulated to several high-level figures within UBA, including Group Managing Director Oliver Alawuba, and external audit firms KPMG and PwC. When contacted by FIJ on April 4, UBA’s spokesperson Ramon Nasir acknowledged the complaint and said it was under review. In a follow-up interview, he repeated that investigations were ongoing but claimed that some of the staff involved had demonstrated poor work habits. He stated that security footage showed instances of misconduct, including unprofessional attire, poor hygiene, and time-wasting during working hours. Later that day, Oyebanji Aloba from UBA’s internal investigation team responded to the anonymous message, requesting more specific details, including the name of the security officer mentioned. By Saturday, internal sources confirmed that the bank had tightened access controls at the CFC. Only pre-approved employees were allowed entry, and at least 10 workers—some of whom had been with the bank for over a year—were barred from accessing the facility. These employees were believed to be linked to the whistleblower email. Copies of employment contracts, issued through ICS Sourcing (one of the recruitment agencies used by UBA), show that probationary staff are entitled to a two-week notice or compensation before termination, while confirmed employees must receive one month’s notice or salary in lieu. At the time of reporting, UBA had not officially confirmed whether the affected staff had been dismissed, but they remained locked out of the premises with no formal communication provided. With the coming of WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram, Telegram and other social media platforms in the era of citizen journalism, which has given almost everybody the means to send messages and communicate easily, combating fake news has become a lot different. Traditional news media are known to make use of the Agenda-setting theory; to disseminate news but that is no longer the case with the new media. Now online newspapers can only act as gatekeepers, and filter news and reports. The bulk stops on the table of social media giants, they need to do more on fighting fake news, online abuses, online bullying, racism and others. It’s a job for all of us in the sense that we all have to come together to fight fake news. What can government do to boost online publication in Nigeria? Well, the government should double its efforts in providing an enabling environment and the regulatory framework for privately owned businesses. For example, the government can set out policies to enable telecommunication companies to lower their internet service charges as the cost of data is one major expense we face in this industry. The government through its regulatory agencies should compel internet service providers to ensure that they provide reliable, affordable and quality service to their subscribers. What roles can media play in the battle against insecurity? Just as we unite in the fight against fake news, addressing issues such as insurgency, kidnapping, and more should involve the collective efforts of all concerned Nigerians. It would be inaccurate to suggest that addressing insecurity is solely the responsibility of the Federal Government led by Muhammadu Buhari. Given the influence of media platforms, we can illuminate areas requiring financial support to combat insecurity. We can also emphasize the well-being of security personnel and the necessary resources for this battle. Moreover, our role includes drawing the attention of both the government and the international community to instances of human rights violations during this struggle.

The Minister, accompanied by Minister of Finance and Coordinating Economy Wale Edun, shared that the revised timeline was established through negotiations with the road contractor, Julius Berger Construction Company. Originally contracted by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government in 2018 with a completion period of 36 months, the project faced delays attributed to a lack of funds.
