Good Morning, Rolling Resistance Speaking of resistance, your vehicle’s tires play a huge role in how easy your car cruises down the highway. All tires generate a certain amount of rolling resistance—or the amount of effort it takes to roll across the driving surface. While most people tend to think of their tires as perfectly round, the truth is where the rubber contacts the road is actually a flat spot the size of your hand. The weight of the vehicle pressing down on the tire generates these contact patches, and while a larger contact patch usually equates better handling and control, it can also negatively affect your fuel economy. Tire manufacturers are increasingly looking at how best to reduce rolling resistance while still offering plenty of grip. Altering tread patterns and rubber compounds have helped to produce tires that require less work to get rolling, and car manufacturers are taking advantage of the technology. Good Morning, Gearing While engine displacement and power have much to do with final miles per gallon, how your vehicle uses that power is crucial to the end result. The basic system that converts engine revolutions into rolling tires is your transmission. Thanks to a series of gears, the work your engine does can be multiplied to be more efficient. Taller final drive gears allow the engine to turn relatively few times while still producing plenty of speed. Say a vehicle has a four-speed transmission. Its engine must turn faster than a car with a five-speed to produce the same speed. While that’s helpful during towing (fewer gear changes), it doesn’t do much for its fuel economy. Some vehicles have as many as eight gears to get the absolute most out of the power the engine produces. Please Broadcast the tips to help others! Read more: www.casrepair. Good Morning, Weight Of course, how much air your vehicle moves through its engine isn’t the sole deciding factor when it comes to mpg. How hard your motor works also has a big effect on what kind of mileage your vehicle gets, and the most basic kind of work is moving all the vehicle’s components down the road. To that end, a vehicle’s weight plays a key role in how much it drinks. The more a vehicle weighs, the harder it will have to work get going and stay moving down the road. A pint-sized vehicle will barely move the scales, while some SUVs and trucks weigh in around a portly 5,000 lbs. The slimmer waistline in a small car means it can afford to have a smaller engine and a motor that doesn’t have to breathe too deeply every time it needs to get up to speed. In contrast, if a vehicle needs capabilities as a towing machine, heavy equipment is a necessity. Please Broadcast the tips to help others! Read more: www.casrepair. Good Morning, Displacement We’re not talking about losing your keys. That’s misplacement. Displacement is the volume of air your engine can consume in a single revolution, and these days it’s usually described in liters. A Yaris, for example, has a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. That means with every revolution of the motor, the engine draws in and expels 1.5 liters of air. The more air an engine moves, the more fuel it can consume with every turn. That’s why, on the whole, four-cylinder engines are thought of as more fuel-efficient than bigger motors like V-6’s or V-8’s. So, while a sub-compact car may only move 1.5-liters with every revolution, full-size trucks can draw in and spit out around 4.6-liters of air thanks to a V-8 engine. Again, more air means more fuel. Good Morning, Ignoring Warning Lights It's pretty easy to get desensitized to those dashboard warning lights. Warning lights are kind of like the little boy who cried wolf -- you know you need an oil change, but that check engine light comes on all the time, right? The sad truth is this: It's pretty easy to get desensitized to those dashboard warning lights. A lot of the time, there's really nothing wrong ... or at least, you think you know what's wrong and you'll get around to it -- eventually. There's nothing wrong with getting to know your car this way. In fact, it's good. But when your car is trying to tell you something, you really should listen, even if you'd really rather not hear what its saying. And that's exactly what warning lights are for. Conundrum! At the very least, you should know what all the warning indicators mean -- if one comes on and it's not familiar to you, look it up in your owner's manual. If it's something you can easily fix yourself (low tire pressure would be a good example), go do it. Sooner is better than later. See? You fixed it! How satisfying! And if a warning light indicates something more complicated is going on, it's a good idea to have your car looked at by a professional. Becoming immune to your car's cries for help might be less expensive in the short run, but definitely not in the long run. Please Broadcast the tips to help others! Read more: www.casrepair. Good Morning, Sloppy Lube Job During Brake Repair If axle grease or caliper lube gets on the friction surface of the brake pads or rotors, your car's brakes won't work. (Michal Saganowski/Getty Images) Even though brake jobs typically aren't (strictly speaking) all that difficult, a lot of amateur mechanics like to hire a pro for this kind of work. And it's understandable. Screwing up a brake job can have pretty serious consequences, for obvious reasons. Your car's brakes work because of friction. It's not entirely that simple, but that's the basic principle. When you press (or slam) the brakes, hydraulic pressure in the system makes your brake calipers and brake pads squeeze in, and this friction causes your wheels to slow down. That's a lot of friction, and it depends on a lot of moving parts. Moving parts require lube, or else they'll seize. So when you're taking brake components apart and putting them back together, you'll need to use brake-system-specific grease to make sure everything's operating at top-notch capacity. And if you're working with the axles, there's a strong chance you'll be using oily substances in the brake vicinity. Either way, you'll want to be extremely careful with lube application -- it's crucial. It requires the precision of carving a really expensive steak, or giving someone a tattoo. If axle grease or caliper lube gets on the friction surface of the brake pads or rotors, your car's brakes won't work. Not at all.*smiles* Please Broadcast the tips to help others! Good Morning, Assuming Bald Tires will last a bit Longer Even if the tread looks decent, rubber deteriorates over time. It's always tempting to try to squeeze a few more miles out of your rubber, but it's certainly not wise. You need to give your car what it needs to maintain proper contact with the road. Think of all you ask your car to do for you, every single day. If you don't know how old your car's tires are (you bought your car secondhand, or you're not a meticulous receipt- or record-keeper) chances are you're probably due for a new set. Even if the tread looks decent, rubber deteriorates over time. The damage might not be easy to see, but miniscule cracks cause loss of structural rigidity, which means the tire can't perform as designed. If the rubber disintegrates where the tread joins the tire, the tread can separate (yup, just like a semi-truck). Not really worth taking the chance, is it? Please Broadcast the tips to help others! Good Morning, Attempting a Jump Start Without Really Knowing How. Putting jumper cables in your trunk doesn't mean you automatically know how to jump-start a car, but at least you did it before your battery died, right? But if you don't use jumper cables properly, you can fry your car ... or yourself. Though the procedure is really simple, you should learn how to do it before you actually need to. Not standing on the side of the highway while reading this article on your phone. That's dangerous. Here's the stuff a step-by-step guide might leave out: First, get out of the way of traffic. Common sense (or self-preservation instinct) should tell you not to smoke. Less obvious, but otherwise logical, you should wear eye protection, make sure the two cars are parked so they're close but not touching and ensure no cables or connector ends touch anything other than the correct terminals. Don't keep cranking if it doesn't fire up -- just give it a little more time. And make sure the ignition is switched off in both cars before you start attaching cables. Even the dead one. Good Morning, Tire Problems There are several ways that your car's tires can cause a vibration. We listed tires last, and made them top reason , since they are so frequently the source of your car's moving vibrations. The full list of ways in which tire issues can contribute to your vehicular shake, rattle and roll is a long one. But here are just some of the major ones: *Car vibrates at certain speeds -- requires tire balance *Tires have separated tread -- requires tire replacement *Uneven tire wear -- requires tire rotation *Tires are "out of round" and roll unevenly - requires tire replacement Sometimes it isn't the tires, but rather the wheels they're wrapped around that cause your car or truck to vibrate when driven. Watch out for potholes and sloppy road repairs which can both be equally hazardous to your wheels. Also, keep in mind that these reasons your car is vibrating aren't the only possible culprits. When in doubt, it's always a good idea to see an automotive service professional Call CAS. Please Broadcast the tips to help others! Read more/join us: www.casrepair. Good Morning, Wobbly Wheels Often, you'll feel your car vibrating directly through your steering wheel. And one seemingly logical thing to guess is that an alignment issue might be the culprit. But car experts often advise otherwise. One or more wheels may suffer from excessive "play," or wobbliness, at the hub itself. The diagnosis and cure for this is pretty involved, as it could point to any of a number of issues. First, let's just assume that each wheel is fastened securely to its hub with properly torqued lug nuts. With that out of the way, the solution to a shaky wheel might entail replacing the wheel bearings. On most modern vehicles, wheel bearings are meant to last the life of the car or truck. But as you may already know, if you subject your vehicle to worse-than-typical wear-and-tear (off-roading, extremely hard driving, high mileage), it's not unheard-of for bearings to wear out. Another thing to look for is "runout." This is the term that describes how much a wheel deviates from a perfectly circular rotation when it is spun. Wheel technicians use precision instruments to determine if runout on any particular wheel exceeds half an inch. Much of the time -- but not all the time -- the solution is a new wheel. Other sources of wiggling, wobbly wheels include the tie-rod ends or ball joints. If they're worn out, they'll allow too much play in the wheel. At driving speeds, this translates to annoying vibration. Wheels prove to be a common culprit when tracking down reasons for why a car is vibrating. But we can narrow it down even more. For our top reason your car is vibrating, join me again tomorrow. Please Broadcast the tips to help others! Read more/join us: www.casrepair. Good Morning Brake Trouble Warped brake rotors may cause vibration, too. Do those bad vibrations appear or intensify when you apply the brakes? If so, there's a strong possibility that your car is tooling about with a warped brake rotor, or rotors. The rotor is the shiny, silver disc-shaped component on vehicles with a disc brake system. The rotor can get bent out of shape due to heavy wear and tear -- basically, overheating from more stopping than that particular rotor can handle. Instead of being uniformly flat all the way across, a deformed rotor is raised or lowered on part of its surface. The calipers and brake pads, which squeeze the brake rotors to make the car stop, can't get an even grip on a warped rotor. Hence, vibration. If you're not handy with a wrench, it's a good idea to call on Complete Auto care Services who can tell you the condition of your vehicle's rotors or brake drums (on cars with rear drum brakes). Axle Problems Hope you slept well... Our vehicles are full of reciprocating, rotating parts that have to fall within certain measurements, or tolerances, in order to perform properly. If an axle gets bent -- which is actually quite easy to do in a collision or other mishap -- it will create a jostle of a ride afterward. With this problem, the vibrating often picks up in intensity the faster you drive. A related problem would be that the driveshaft also needs inspection. This rapidly spinning part transfers engine power to the rear axles and wheels in rear-wheel drive vehicles. If it's bent, shaking may result. Worn-out constant velocity (CV) joints fall under the same category. If the "boots" -- those rubber, accordion-like coverings around the ends of the drive axles -- are intact, clamps are secure, and no lubricant is seeping out, chances are they're not the problem. But if the boots are torn, that means dirt and dust and road filth is getting in and damaging the joints. For front-wheel drive cars, toasted CV joints mean you'll be buying new drive axles, too. "Axles of unevenness" could be giving your vehicle the shakes, but what if those bad vibrations come on only when you apply the brakes? Find out tomorrow as I share another tip with you. Engr Tanimonu Abraham Ikukoyi: Can we have a list of reliable auto workshops in Nigeria. So far Nairaland auto section has been very good in helping to source cars but we all know that good maintenance is key to the life span of a car. I've seen a lot of posts where people want to buy certain cars e.g. Audi A6, but are worried about who is going to be fixing it afterwards. Can we attempt to build a library of known reliable workshops in this topic. Please don't add roadside mechanics, thermostat removing mechanics, V6 fearing mechanics and wire joining rewires. I suggest a format like this: Speciality: All Vehicles - Post 1996 Workshop/Mechanic: CAS Location: No4 Adebowale Close,Maicomm Bus/Stop, Summit Hotel, Akowonjo Egbeda Lagos. Contact No: 07064451975, 08139503656 Personal Experience: Did first car service there. A senior engineer drove the car around to test performance. Professional. Servicing was done very promptly. Next service date was pasted on the car. Positives: Modern auto equipment. Organised. Experienced engineers, main guy has a wealth of information ooo Negatives: None yet. Though some may consider them pricey compared to regular mechanics |
