PropertiesRe: VERY IMPORTANT: Why Nigerian Civil Engineers Blame Architects/their Incompetence by engryomiaina(m): 3:25pm On Jun 12, 2016
Boss. Weldone. Please share your idea. Cantilever of 7m,.....nice! Steel or R.C. Or composite? Let's share ideas. Better than throw blames. I will state again. OP contact a COREN registered engineer next time you are working on a project. Then I don't know what the ethics of your profession are, there are better ways of making such claims. Report to the NSE and write to COREN. Abeg nor come dey embarrass engineers here. Cheers

Avalon316:
Castosvilla,

Damn! I understand your anger. The problem is that you have been patronizing the quacks. Any engr that wants to introduce columns for cantilevers greater than 900mm is a quack or grossly inexperienced. These days, Nigerian engineers like myself have successfully designed and constructed cantilevers of 7metres. I am damn sure that you will prefer to pay those quacks peanut than pay a competent engineer for his works. Few weeks ago,i asked an architect to pay 600k for an engineering design but he refused . Recently,he called to tell me that another engineer wants to do the job for 80k. I laughed and told him to give the job to the other guy. I hope he will not lament just you after messing up the job. The problem here is most of you architects can't pay competent engineers.

I have a lot to write but I need to be in church soon.

You just hit the nail on the head. Don't go to quacks and insult the whole profession. Employ the services of competent engineers and be willing to pay them their appropriate fees.

einsteino:
The hard truth is an architect draws pretty pictures that he has no idea how to make stand. There is no limitation to what an architect can model. One can model a completely suspended building in revit, archicad.. Can cantilever 40 metre span.. Can have an overhang of 400 sq metre supported by just a brick wall.. It is all just pictures and models.. The civil engr tells him what is obtainable within the budget and the prevailing technical conditions in the country. The way the industry works, engrs call architects dreamers and architects call engrs killjoys.

You dont hve to feel bitter about it. It is one thing to dream, it is another to make it work. It is not too late to go get a second degree in civil engineering so you can have all the competent technical know how you require to make your projects be the way you wish.
moreso nigeria isnt dubai, it is the truth. Such pojects require a lot of money for an engr to be able to explore alot of options and assmeble a large team. Here it is hard to even specialise, i have done many projects that budgetary constraints made me negotiate modifications with the architect. Heck it is almost mission impossible to produce grade 40 concrete in Nigeria. What are engrs to do? The client doesnt want to spend money on his own project, the engr isnt paid something that even encourages thinking outside the box.

Yes there are incompetent engrs. I have met a number of them, but the truth is alot of folks who parade themselves as civil engrs are not, architects also parade themselves as engrs and i too have met a good number of incompetent architects. I work as a consultant/design structural engr and i know the sacrifices and efforts it takes to be a competent engr. Civil engineering is very tasking, mentally and otherwise. Yet an architect would dare ask an engr to carryout structural designs for peanuts. They want you to offer competence at the fees of quacks.

If you want competence, you must be ready to pay for it. You cant run to quacks and come out here and insult an entire profession, it is not nice. There are many civil engineering consulting firms in Nigeria and they are very competent, employ their services. I too am a competent civil engr and you can reach me for your structural designs.

So yes you can apply but make sure you have practised engineering too for a minimum of 4yrs.

It's funny when we read of things like this. We can not verify the strong allegations. It is very possible. Some people can be petty and very unreasonable.

Their pettiness cannot dampen the need for engineers to associate and have a statutory body regulating our practise.

PoliticsRe: Femi Adesina To Nigerians: ‘go And Fight Pipeline Vandals If You Want Electricit by engryomiaina(m): 4:24pm On Mar 28, 2016
Skuhc:
Presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina has asked Nigerians to take up arms and fight pipeline vandals if they really want stable electricity.

It would be recalled that during an interview with Al Jazeera, President Muhammadu Buhari said that anyone who was not okay with Nigeria’s addition to the Coalition of Islamic States against Terror should head to the Sambisa forest and fight the terrorists themselves.

In like manner, NNPC boss, Kachikwu Ibe had told Nigerians he is not a magician and therefore could not magically solve the fuel crisis in the country.

It would appear that the kind of comment made by the NNPC boss, Ibe Kachikwu which irked a lot of Nigerians last week is set to be a trend with the government of the day.

Adesina followed this trend of apathy in a recent interview with Channels TV where he spoke on several issues affecting the country.

The presidential spokesperson blamed gas pipeline vandals for the drastic drop in power generation in the country while claiming that the target of 10,000 megawatts set by the Federal Government is achievable.

He however, told Nigerians who are complaining about the incessant black outs and almost non-existent power supply in the country to go and fight the vandals if they really needed power.

If Nigerians are supposed to go and fight terrorists in the forest, magically create fuel on their own and now have to fight pipeline vandals, what then is the government’s duty to Nigerians?

This APC government have no iota of respect for the citizens of Nigeria! I hope we realise we voted "1 chance". They swindled Nigerians

Some members of staff of the Federal University Lokoja, Kogi state, were pictured weeping as their pioneer Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdulmumini Hassan Rafindadi, leaves office following his sack by the Federal government last week. He was among the 13 Vice Chancellors of Federal Universities that were sacked by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu.

Prof was not sacked. His 5years tenure had elapsed. He is leaving normally. Why they are crying, is because he is a man of the people. This man literally behaved like a father, brother and friend to all.

These our so called politicians are still deceiving us, so they know saraki has sinned since 2003 and kept quite about it all this while?

It makes one wonder then that all the known criminal and public fund looters can also be prosecuted, if we are sincere about this anti corruption fight.

Certain individuals are keeping past leaders criminal evidence as leverage for personal gains only and not for national interest. Which to me is still corruption.
God bless you for this comment. I like your political exposure. And that in the story of Nigerian Political terrain
