Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, yesterday, expressed optimism that President Muhammadu Buhari’s policies and programmes would make positive impact on Nigerians.
Oshiomhole told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo, that “Buhari has the political will to make things better for Nigerians.
“I know that President Buhari will do better, because we had a meeting with him last week, and he is very conscious that he became a president courtesy of the ordinary people, particularly the poor.
“He is very committed to fashioning out policies and programmes, social infrastructure and physical infrastructure that will impact directly on the lives of average persons.
“So, I can assure you that the president is determined to ensure that he justifies the confidence reposed in him.’’
The governor, however, urged Nigerians to be patient, stressing that “there will be no quick fix measures because Buhari inherited a treasury that is almost empty.
“All the same, he has not come to lament that, but he has come to give a new hope and we are more inspired now.’’
He urged Nigerians to support the president and his administration to deliver people-oriented programmes.

PoliticsAbia Issues Quit Notice To Enyimba Hotel Occupants by ENTROVERT(op): 3:37pm On Jun 29, 2015
Abia State Government has issued a quit notice to all street urchins illegally occupying the abandoned and dilapidated seven-storey Enyimba Hotel building in Aba.
The state government noted with sadness that “over the years, all manner of miscreants and illegal squatters have turned the place to their abode.”
According to a press release signed by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, Mr. Godwin Adindu, the action was part of government’s efforts to recover and revive public property in the state.
The release added that as part of government’s policy on Aba Urban Renewal, “the state government will be embarking on a massive infrastructural rehabilitation of government buildings and all abandoned projects in the Aba metropolis.”
The release read in part, “Government is therefore serving notices to all the illegal occupants in the building to vacate the place within one week, as the relevant government agencies are ready to commence a massive rehabilitation on the building.
Government is also using the opportunity to direct all illegal squatters in all government buildings or premises in the state to quickly vacate the places before the arrival of the government functionaries who have been mandated to commence work on such structures.”

PoliticsNo Mercy: President Buhari Vows To Crush Boko Haram As Protesters Call For Secon by ENTROVERT(op): 2:32pm On Jun 29, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the latest attacks carried out by suspected members of terror group Boko Haram.

More than 50 people died last week after three separate attacks in the country. At least 42 people died in two attacks in Borno state which followed the deaths of at least 10 people at a market in Yobe state killed by a child suicide bomber, believed to be aged 12.

No group has claimed responsibility for the blast in Yobe, but suspicion has already fallen on Boko Haram, which is renowned for kidnapping civilians — mainly women and children — and forcing them to participate in attacks throughout the north-east, where the terrorists aim to establish an Islamic caliphate.

“They [Boko Haram] will not find Nigeria a safe haven, because they would be hunted down without mercy and compromise,” Buhari said in a statement issued by the President’s spokesperson, Malam Garba Shehu.

“No sane people who believe in any God would be destroying the lives of innocent people in cold blood, terrorists don’t represent any religion.

“Make no mistake about it: this government is ever determined to discharge its fundamental duty of protecting the lives of its citizens from physical threats from any groups bent on creating chaos, confusion, and on destroying social and economic life of the people,” the statement said.

The Nigerian government is being aided by mercenaries and troops from Chad, Benin, Niger and Cameroon in its offensive and has scored some successes since the military co-operation started in February.

Buhari, a former military chief, vowed Nigeria will do anything it can to defeat the deadly insurgence and find some 220 girls kidnapped by Boko Haram in Chibok, Borno state, in April last year.

The government has denied an alleged plan to relocate dozens of Boko Haram suspects to the Ekwulobia Prison in Anambra state, southern Nigeria.

The denial came days after dozens of people in Anambra took to the streets to protest against the relocation. According to local reports, people shut their shops in several cities including the capital Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi, Ekwulobia and Agulu.

Protesters held banners reading “Buhari should not destroy the peace in Anambra State” and “We do not want Boko Haram in Anambra”.

Some protesters also chanted “We want Biafra”, referring to Nigeria’s Eastern Region, which became a secessionist state called Republic of Biafra after gaining independence from Nigeria in 1967. It was re-annexed in 1970 following the Nigerian-Biafran war that claimed one million lives.

People in the Eastern Region, mainly from the Igbo community, wanted to secede due to ethnic, religious and economic differences with other communities in Nigeria following independence from Britain in 1960.

After independence, Nigeria was comprised of territories that were not part of the nation before the colonisation, resulting in escalating tensions among the communities.

The Eastern Region gained independence following two coup d’etats in 1966 and 1967. The fact that Nigeria’s oil was located in the south of the country played a major role in the eruption of the war, during which medicines and food shortage in Biafra led to the death of thousands of people.

A movement to re-secede is present in south-eastern Nigeria today. The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (Massob) fights for the independence of South-East and South-South regions of Nigeria.

The Nigerian government has accused Massob of violence and his leader, Ralph Uwazuruike, was arrested in 2005 on treason charges. He was released two years later.

PoliticsCustomers Storm Banks As Accounts Verification Ends Tomorrow by ENTROVERT(op): 2:19pm On Jun 29, 2015
Customers in Owerri have besieged banks trying to beat the deadline of June 30 for the verification of bank accounts.

A Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria who visited some banks in Owerri on Monday, reports that bank officials and security operatives, were having a tough time controlling the customers.

Reacting to the development, some of the customers called for the extension of the deadline.

A customer at the First Bank, Mrs Catherine Okwuosa, said a lot of people spent the whole day queuing for the exercise without being verified.

“If this exercise ends as proposed, it will be unfair as many of us will not be captured. I plead that they should extend it by another one month,” she said.

Another customer, Mrs Cordelia Nwaiwu, also complained of the large crowds at the bank, and urged the bank management to increase the number of service points.

“You cannot believe that as early as 5.30 am, a lot of people have already gathered to write their names, to be captured when the bank opens by 8.am.

“Unfortunately, when they started, they said they will complete those left the previous day. I had been trying for the past three days to see that my account was verified, to no avail,” she said.

At the Fidelity bank, the story was the same as a customer, Mr Mike Nwachukwu, called on banks to simplify the process by making it possible for customers to be verified over the Internet.

“If people are allowed to be verified on-line, it will reduce the number of customers that queue at banks for the exercise,” he said.

In his reaction, Chief Caleb Orji, a businessman, noted that the initiative was laudable to check the increasing cases of bank fraud, but said it should be a continuous process.

A civil servant, Mrs Blessing Ugochukwu, expressed the fear that civil servants, whose accounts had not been verified, could find it difficult to access their salary.

She called on the Central Bank to extend the deadline to allow more people complete the verification process.
An official of one of the banks, who pleaded for anonymity, told NAN that at the end of the exercise, those not verified would be captured whenever they came for any bank transaction.

He lamented that the exercise had been going on since last year, only for people to be in a rush now.
