Despite Winston Churchill begging Roosevelt to join the war for almost 19 months before the Japanese struck at Pearl Harbour and despite the fact that the United States and the British Empire were allies there were things many people.

1. America stylishly extracted several key concessions from Britain and supplied them weapons minimally for a start just enough to keep them afloat but never enough to seriously threaten Germany 🇩🇪 in 1940 and 1941.

2. In exchange for 50 destroyer naval vessels America demanded Britain allow them 99 year leases to establish military bases in British dominions in the carribeans. Churchhill protested to the attorney general of the US Jackon over a phone conversation by saying "Empires just don't bargain" and "Jackson at the othee end replied" But republics do".

3. America allow insisted that Britain hasten the timetable for granting independence to their colonies especially India. Churchhill protested fiercely citing that Britain leaving India will leave the latter prostrate to any misadventure from Imperial Japan.

Germany itself saved him the trouble when they declared war on America 4 days after the invasion of pearl harbour much to Churchill's relief.

7. Before the pearl harbour incident that lifted Churchill's spirit the only other event that gave him hope was Germany's invasion of USSR. He was happy because the USSR (a former ally of Germany before the invasion) could easily have sided Germany. The invasion put less pressure on already battered Britain by opening a second front of conflict. It also enabled America to supply the Russians with a lot of millitary equipments including planes, artillery and guns so that they do most of the fighting.
