benardtotti: You are still coming to ,you point ,vote buying in Africa should be tied to community development, a delegate is representing a larger caucus and money is not the only relevant thing that should be exchanged for votes . Vote buying is always for personal gain especially for the sellers and that's in no way politics. But lobbying is different and that's why in US, those that win swing states lobbied them with what they can/will do for them. |

benardtotti: Vote buying happens in different guises across the world it's not a crime , you have the freedom of Choice, if I have a pen and you need it for an exam I can give it to you for free or for a fee ,if you make me an offer I cant refuse will sell to you .
Do you know in the usa delegates lobby for different projects for their communities, unfortunately in nigeria we have reduced it to just money ,money money . This is more like politicking than vote buying. Vote buying is for personal gain unlike community gain. |

SpencerForbes: When Rude Boy was accused, he took action immediately and had the woman arrested, which we all witnessed. He shut the rumors down online right away, and public opinion was on his side.
Did this woman do anything similar? Not at all. There was no debunking and no follow-up from her side—then, suddenly, the man just confesses. Does that really add up to you? It does. Rude boy said he was going to take action but no one knew it would be swift and he did so because he has the wherewitha. Do you know if the lady can afford such? Recanting could come from a pricked conscience or you don't think so? Some people do some funny things to chase clout. BTW, saynotocultisim happened here on NL. The guy did not even say anything and fished out the fellow who deactivated immediately. He had the wherewithal to do so even in such a faceless forum as NL. Modified: someone pointed out he was just released from detention on this particular thread . Just some couple of posts above. He met his match and went cold. When I said some people chase unnecessary clots, you think it's just a lie because a woman was involved. |

What’s the probability of a random person on nairaland guessing your actual location and places you’ve been to without actually seeing you? Until you meet person like rude boy or saynotocultism that is ready to fish you out, that time you will learn that talk is not cheap. |

Politics › Re: Nigeria’s New Tax Laws Explained In Simple English (2026 Guide) by erniok2: 7:43pm On Dec 19, 2025 |
socialjustice93: That's not how it's calculated. They calculate it annually by exempting the first level income that's not taxable then the rest are taxed accordingly and spread monthly. For instance a monthly income of 100k is 1.2m annually, the first 800k is not taxed, the next level 801k-1.2m i.e 400k is taxed 15% i.e 60k. So a 100k monthly salary earner will be taxed a PIT of 5k monthly. The new tax law isn't bad but I don't support it as our leaders lack accountability and transparency.
Modified I rushed through your post and didn't digest properly. 100k monthly income is actually low and shouldn't be taxed at all considering economic reality of today. Even minimum wage didn't escape the net chai Now you get the gist. Only those earning 70k and below are exempted. They were being clever by half by stating low income earners are exempted without defining who are the low income earners. |

fabolouz1: most nigerian business men are unscrupulous and they are the ones making things difficult for genuine business people . i was listening to a documentary where a senior customs officials was lamenting about the fact that most Chinese , Indians and nationals of other countries are the ones doing the importing of goods themselves and directly to consumers because Nigerian business men who were often given goods upfront on a receive and pay later basis surreptitiously change their names and contacts , then go to other importers to do same. Politics › Re: Let President Muhammadu Buhari Rest In Peace - Nasir El-Rufai by erniok2: 9:49am On Dec 18, 2025 |
nairalanda1: What people expected of buhari in 2015 was army buhari...who could pass a decree and 200 people would be in jail for corruption
The problem is, you can't do that in a civillian government. You got to go through the court process, you got to have a proper investigation beforehand, and you got to have proof and witnesses. And as for passing anti-corruption laws...you can't pass a decree 'army style'...you would be impeached, and for good reasons (and even 'sensible people' will support your impeachement)
The above is why the army appears to look better at tackling corruption (and I won't deny that it is very satisfying to read about how some really godawful characters during the first and second republic got their just desserts, for a while even)...but fighting corruption without due process can lead to abuses like Pa Ajasin spending 9 months in detention in 1984 before they determined he had actually stolen nothing as governor of old Ondo state. And it can set a dangerous preccedent. No due process always ends up affecting completely innocent people. Remember the purges of the USSR in the 1930's...by 1991, most of the people purged and executed by fiat were 'rehabilitated' (lol)
Also, civillians tend to make alliances to get into power. And that means making alliances with unsavoury corrupt people (see our current leader for example, but also see many past civillan leaders). A civillian president who actively fights corruption even in the ranks of his own people is not going to last long in power in nigeria...which is why we have repeatedly had the paradox of the incorruptible leader in nigeria surrounded by corrupt associates. Such a president would be impeached and replaced with a more malleable successor. And the show will continue. Yeah, Yaradua for example did fight corupption, by reducing it in the civil service, but note that he did not collect any major scalps in the elite because he would have been kicked out of office.(he even did not go after Ibori, but rather chose to let the UK get him) In as much as I agree with your take, truth is Buhari ensured corruption as the president. Do we talk about his nephew nicknamed Tunde that from supposedly selling airtime in a kiosk became super rich and his inability to curb his relative and associates wealth grab. Even his ex-NSA indicted him but subtly deflected the blame to his ministers. |

AMINDA: Exactly. Tinubu will get to find that the book has cost him more political capital than he hoped to get. The motive is not lost on Northerners and true Buharists. It has backfired tremendously. What is it with them and usage of spouses for political gain. The other day, it was Remi asking Patience Jonathan to smile for the camera in Osun state while she sat there looking forlorn like she was forced to be there. Don't forget, it was Patience who declared support for Tinubu when Jonathan was clearly still nursing a comeback. Oh please, give it a rest in extolling PMB. He was a failure through and through and proved most right that Idiagbon was really the firepower during the militiary era. Little wonder the coupist had to wait for him to travel before striking. So much was expected of PMB in tackling corruption and insecurity and he ended up delivering nothing. |
