Maya Bay, made famous in the 2000 film 'The Beach,' will be closed to all visitors for four months annually, starting this June, to allow for the recovery of the island's battered coral reefs and sea life.

The Beach to halt environmental damage caused by too many tourists.
Maya Bay, on Phi Phi Leh island in the Andaman Sea, will be closed to all visitors for four months annually starting this June to allow for the recovery of the island's battered coral reefs and sea life. The decision to keep visitors away was made Wednesday by Thailand's National Parks and Wildlife Department.
Many Thai marine national parks are closed from mid-May to mid-October, but because of tourist demand, Maya Bay has remained open year-round since a Hollywood crew set foot there in 1999 to film the dark backpacker tale based on a novel by Alex Garland.
The beach receives an average of 200 boats and 4,000 visitors each day.
Recent surveys by a team led by marine biologists found a large part of the coral reefs around the area is gone and sea life has virtually disappeared.
"It's like someone who has been working for decades and has never stopped," said Thon Thamrongnawasawat, a prominent marine scientist and member of Thailand's national strategy committee on environment development. "Overworked and tired, all the beauty of the beach is gone. We need a timeout for the beach."
Thon said the temporary closing will kick-start the rehabilitation process.
"If you ask me if it is too late to save our islands, the answer is no. But if we don't do something today, it will be too late," said Thanya Netithammakum, head of the National Parks and Wildlife Department.
When Maya Bay reopens, the department will set a daily limit of 2,000 tourists, while boats will no longer be allowed to anchor there and will have to dock on the opposite side of the island at floating piers.
The number of visitors the beach has been seeing is unsustainable, and a temporary closure is better than nothing, Thon said.
"The locals know that and we all know that," he said. "This would be a good way to start managing our tourist destinations. And we can improve on what we learn after the first year. We know that it's important we manage our resources well. It's not about more numbers of tourists but about sustainable tourism that benefit locals as well."
More than 35 million tourists visited Thailand last year, compared to around 10 million when The Beach premiered in 2000.
Thai authorities have in the past closed off islands ruined by mass tourism. Koh Yoong, part of the Phi Phi island chain, and Koh Tachai, in the Similan Islands National Park, have been off limits to tourists permanently since mid-2016.
Thon, who surveyed both islands recently, said the results have been amazing. Areas with a bleak sea life environment and coral bleaching are now teeming with robust and colorful sea life and coral, he said. He's certain that the annual closure will also help restore Maya Bay.
"I have always dreamt that one day we could work to bring her back to life. I have been following and working on Maya Bay for more than 30 years. I had seen it when it was a heaven and I see it when it has nothing left. Anything that we can do to bring this paradise back to Thailand is the dream of a marine biologist," he said.

BEIJING, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- China's central bank said it will tighten regulations on domestic investors' participation in overseas transactions of "initial coin offerings" (ICOs) and virtual currency as risks are still high in the sector.
Overseas ICO transaction platforms pose risks including illegal offerings, false information, fraud and pyramid schemes, according to the People's Bank of China (PBOC).
Regulators warned that domestic investors should be alert to risks and refrain from participating in speculation in virtual currency transactions.
China will take a string of measures to guard against financial risks and maintain stability, according to the PBOC.
"ICOs, in essence, are a kind of unauthorized and illegal public fundraising and are suspected of having ties to criminal activities such as financial fraud and pyramid schemes," according to an earlier statement from the central bank.
Last September, authorities ordered a ban on ICOs and shut down all virtual currency exchanges in the country, as the rapidly expanding market triggered concerns over financial risks.

Traditional leaders in Ghana have banned school girls from crossing a river every Tuesdays and during their menstruating period in order not to provoke the gods in the community.
According to reports, the ban was given by a local river god that menstruating girls should desist from crossing the River Ofin, in the Upper Denkyira East district, in the Central Region.
The ban has outraged children’s activists, because the girls could miss out on their education since they apply the river to get to their schools.
The UN’s scientific and education organisation, Unesco, estimates one in 10 girls in the region does not attend school because they are menstruating, while a World Bank report notes that 11.5m Ghanaian women lack the appropriate hygiene and sanitation management facilities needed.
Reacting to the ban, Unicef’s menstrual hygiene ambassador Shamima Muslim Alhassan told BBC Pidgin:
“It seems the gods are really powerful aren’t they?” she said. “Sometimes I think that we need to ask for some form of accountability from these gods who continue to bar a lot of things from happening, to account for how they have used the tremendous power that we have given them.”
Central Regional Minister Kwamena Duncan has given indications he will coordinate with the Ashanti regional minister to find a solution, BBC Pidgin reports.
The River Ofin serves as a boundary between the Ashanti and Central Region.
Meanwhile, during menstruation in Madagascar some females are told not to wash during their periods and in Nepal, some women are forced to sleep in huts away from the rest of the family.

Chukwuebuka Obi-Uchendu (born July 14, 1982) is a Nigerian lawyer and media personality from Okija in Anambra State, Nigeria. A teenage girl was forced to have sex with more than 1, 000 men over two years at a motel in Philadelphia , a lawsuit claims .
The girl was forced into ‘ sex slavery ’ with men up to four times her age at the Roosevelt Inn in the north -east of the city , her lawyer has claimed .
The teenager , who was just 14 when the alleged abuse began , is suing the motel , its manager and the company that owns it.
The now 17- year- old girl claims she was paid $50 to have sex with several hundred men at the motel after being forced into prostitution in 2013, CBS Philadelphia reported .
The lawsuit claims the alleged ordeal continued into 2014.
The motel is alleged to have provided rooms for human traffickers, but the motel ’ s 72-year- old manager , Yagna Patel, denied any knowledge of this .
The lawsuit claims the defendants ‘ knew or had constructive knowledge’ that the girl was ‘ being sexually exploited. ’
Traffickers are alleged to have advertised sex with the girl online , before encouraging men to come to the motel after agreeing a price over the phone, Philly . com reported .
When they arrived , a hotel clerk would show them to the girl’ s room , according to the lawsuit, which names a staff member, ‘ Abdul ’ , who was supposedly aware of the abuse .
The lawsuit claims that motel workers should have noticed tell-tale signs of abuse , such as the room allegedly regularly containing used condoms.
It also claims that the room ‘ frequently smelled of marijuana’ and that men and minors were allegedly seen leaving it.
The girl was allegedly treated ‘ aggressively ’ and would have seemed scared, court documents claim , adding that she often ‘ dressed in a sexually explicit manner . ’
“ This child was forced into sex slavery , paid to do things with men double , triple, quadruple her age , ” her attorney Nadeem Bezar said .
Fellow lawyer Tom Kline added : “ You have to be blind deaf and dumb not to know that over 100 men are showing up over a period of a couple days.
“ You have a cleaning crew that comes into the room and often times finds boxes or waste cans full of used condoms. This is about as open and obvious as it gets .
“ You can’ t have a line of johns out the front door and around the room waiting without them knowing the linen service was extraordinary. The front desk would direct the traffic to the room of this child. ”
The teenager , who is in therapy, is suing for $50, 000 in compensation.
Patel claimed he was unaware of the abuse or the lawsuit and said : “ We just rent the room and that’ s all we can do. ”

TWO suspected witches brought pandemonium in Budiriro. Where they were found at a house in the early hours of the morning; stark naked and with suspected witchcraft tools of trade, including traditional herbs, calabashes, live owls and other paraphernalia held in winnowing baskets.

An eyewitness said: “It was around 6am when we heard people shouting ‘witches, witches’ from a house near here. We rushed there and found the two women sitting outside the house in complete nudity. On being asked where they had come from, one of them said they had come from Mutorashanga, but would not say how they had ended up here or the purpose of their visit.”

Police were called to the scene and took away the two women to Budiriro Police Station before proceeding with them to Southerton Police Station. They had wrapped them in blankets to cover their unclothedness. Several hundred Budiriro residents mobbed the “witches” and it took police a hard time to disperse them.
