The latest migration statistics into Lagos reveal more than population movement — they expose the uneven development within the South West itself.

According to the data, almost half of migrants into Lagos aged 15–49 come from the South West:

Men: 46.5%

Women: 42.8%


This is not happening simply because Lagos is attractive. It is happening because opportunities are heavily concentrated in one city while many neighboring states remain economically weak.

For thousands of young people across Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti, relocating to Lagos has become less of a choice and more of a necessity.

People leave because:

jobs are limited,

industries are weak,

infrastructure is poor,

businesses struggle to grow,

and economic opportunities remain scarce outside Lagos.


As a result, Lagos has become the economic lifeline of the South West.

The statistics also show how sharply migration drops outside nearby regions:

South East migration remains low,

South South contributes modest numbers,

while Northern migration is extremely small.


This proves that migration into Lagos is driven largely by regional economic imbalance. The closer people are to Lagos, the more likely they are to depend on it for survival and opportunity.

But this dependence comes at a cost.

Lagos continues to face:

overcrowding,

housing pressure,

worsening traffic,

rising unemployment,

overstretched infrastructure,

and declining quality of life.


No single city should carry the economic burden of an entire region.

The real solution is not to keep expanding Lagos endlessly. The solution is to develop other South West states aggressively:

industrial hubs in Ibadan,

tech ecosystems in Akure,

manufacturing in Abeokuta,

agro-processing in Ekiti,

and modern infrastructure across the region.


When development is balanced, migration becomes an option — not an escape plan.
