It’s always interesting how quickly people forget recent political history. Celebrating someone’s elevation within that same political structure ignores a key contradiction: this is the very system that denied Akinwunmi Ambode a second term despite what many widely regarded as a solid performance in office.

Ambode served as governor of Lagos from 2015 to 2019 and, by most objective assessments, delivered significantly in infrastructure, finance management, and urban development. Yet, he was blocked from securing his party’s ticket for re-election after losing the APC primary to Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

That outcome wasn’t driven by public rejection at the ballot box—it happened internally, within the same political machinery now being praised. In fact, even insiders admitted that “arrangements” within the party made it impossible for Ambode’s supporters to prevail.

So the real question is: what exactly are we celebrating?

If a political structure can sideline a sitting governor who, by many accounts, was delivering tangible results, then loyalty to performance clearly isn’t its guiding principle. Instead, it suggests that internal alignments, power blocs, and interests carry more weight than governance outcomes.

That context matters. Because when the same system elevates new figures, it’s reasonable to question whether such promotions are based on merit, competence, or simply alignment with entrenched political interests.

In short, before applauding, we should reflect:
this is not just about one individual’s rise—it’s about a system whose past actions raise serious doubts about its commitment to rewarding performance and accountability.

When a serious opposition that is ready to do their homework from the grassroot comes on board , they will defeat APC in Lagos in the nearest future.

When that happens, all these GAC and other non elected cabals that pose as so called "apex-decision making body in the state " will become defunct.

It's only a matter of time and how bad the people of the state wants a change from the current political arrangement that hardly favors the people but anointed office holders.

Let's do a simple logical mathematics, Atiku got 7m votes in 2023 at a time when a substantial number of Northern electorates, thanks to Elrufai, agreed that power should head South. This led to 5.6m Northerners voting Tinubu. Fastforward to 2027, with Elrufai under persecution and the performance of Tinubu, a substantial amount of these 5.6m voters will no longer be voting Tinubu. It's a no-brainer that most will now vote Atiku. Atiku will only need marginal votes in the South to be home and dry if he clinches the ticket. In other words, Atiku has barely lost a voter who voted him in 2023 but even if he has in some Southern states like Akwa Ibom, Osun and Bayelsa, he has potentially gained more from Northerners who voted Tinubu in 2023.

In contrast, Tinubu has encroached into Obi's base in the NC, SS and SW. Even though he remains unpopular across board. It is clear that he has not gained enough to make up for his lost Northern votes because he has failed to consolidate the South genuinely among the electorates, except getting their elites to his side. Obi has also lost some ground if we are being honest but he remains the undisputed owner of the South if he's on the ballot but he may not pull enough numbers or find enough radicalism to protect his votes in the South. Plus, unlike in 2023, not many outside the SE will be inclined to go vote Obi again just to prove a point if nothing changes.

An Atiku/Obi ticket remains the strongest combination till date. There are also talks about the NDC courting Jonathan to throw his heart in the ring. This further complicates things for Obi and Tinubu.
