Promise made and kept

2023: Tinubu Promises To Recruit More Teachers, Give Student Loans

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Tinubu has promised to recruit more teachers and also give student loans as part of efforts to develop the education sector and also build the youth capacity

Tinubu made the promise at the British Royal Institute in London.

“Youths are the greatest asset of tomorrow,” Tinubu said in Chatham House while fielding questions from participants at the event, adding that they will be part of his “all-inclusive” government, pointing to the Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

“The education system is to change. We would overhaul it and tinker with some areas with the philosophy that no one would be left behind. There will be student loans for all. We are going to reform the Almajiri system, We are equally going to build more schools, recruit more teachers and train them,” the former Lagos State governor said.

To further help young people, he said if elected, his government would equally introduce technology hubs where youths can acquire digital skills to better develop their leadership skills.

“Youths can even develop technological languages on their own and make a better 21st-century approach to governance in Nigeria,” he said.

Monday’s event focussed on economic and foreign policies as well as national security among others.

Earlier, the former Lagos State governor was spotted in London with some chieftains of the party ahead of the event. Some of them include the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila; Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai and his Jigawa State counterparty, Abubakar Badaru; former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi amongst others.

Tinubu is in the 2023 presidential race alongside frontline candidates including Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

PoliticsNo Matter How Long You Protest, I’ll Remove Subsidy - Tinubu (2022) by Estello(op): 7:23am On Aug 08, 2024
Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, has said there was no going back on fuel subsidy removal if elected president next year.

Tinubu, who stated this while speaking at the business luncheon with business owners titled: “Business Forward” yesterday in Lagos, hinted that, no matter how long people protest, it would not stop him from removing fuel subsidy.Tinubu in a statement by his Media Office, signed by Mr. Tunde Rahman, insisted that Nigeria would not continue to subsidise fuel consumption in neighbouring countries.

“How can we be subsidising fuel consumption of Cameroon, of Niger, of Benin Republic. No matter how long you protest, we are going to remove subsidy,” he said. The APC presidential candidate said his government would give room to allow the private sector to thrive by not interfering, while opening rooms for collaborations.

He noted: “Thus, where the private sector is doing well, my government will not interfere. Our guiding principle regarding economic policy shall be to provide the right policy framework so that business can flourish.“But I want to do more than help existing businesses to exist. We must create the space, where new sectors and lines of business can open. We must grow this economy so that it can accommodate over 200 million people with a decent standard of living.

“My government will collaborate with the private sector to bring about massive infrastructure renewal that enhances economic opportunities, lower business costs and overheads while producing jobs that spur further growth and development through increased consumer demand. This is the virtuous economic cycle we seek to create.”

He also promised to work towards creating a better security in the country to allow them an enabling environment to do their businesses, adding that, business and insecurity cannot thrive side by side.

On Security, he said, “I am committed to securing Nigerians from violence and the fear of such violence. Terror, kidnapping and banditry have no place in the society I envision. Upon entering office, we will move to implement several measures:”

The measures, Tinubu said, included increasing the numbers of military and non-military security forces, as well as anti-terrorist battalions with integrated special forces units would also be established.“We did it in Lagos with the RRS Scheme. We can do it again for Nigeria. As we fight insecurity, we must deal with our economy at the same time. We know that business and insecurity cannot thrive side by side,” he stressed.

PoliticsNigeria's Economy Grows Steadily As Oil Output Rises - Reuters by Estello(op): 6:55am On Feb 23, 2024
Nigeria's economy grew 3.46% in the fourth quarter (NGGDPQ=ECI), opens new tab, a similar pace as it did a year earlier, data showed on Thursday, as oil output picked up and government reforms to boost growth began to take effect.

Gross domestic product grew quicker than in the two previous quarters of 2023. GDP grew 2.54% in the third quarter and 2.51% in the second.
Growth in the final quarter of 2022 was 3.52% in annual terms.

The pickup in growth came as reforms instituted by President Bola Tinubu, who pledged during his inauguration in May to expand the economy by at least 6% annually, began to take effect.

Tinubu made bold changes including ending a costly fuel subsidy and devaluing the country's naira currency twice in less than a year to try to lift sluggish growth.

But these reforms have stoked price pressures, sending inflation to almost 30% in January, its the highest in nearly three decades.
President Tinubu said during a November budget speech that the economy was expected to grow by at least 3.76% in 2024

The National Bureau of Statistics said full-year growth for 2023 stood at 2.74%.
"The performance of the GDP in the fourth quarter of 2023 was driven mainly by the services sector, which recorded a growth of 3.98% and contributed 56.55% to the aggregate GDP," the statistics office said.

Growth in the agriculture and industrial sectors, which create jobs, improved marginally during the period, compared with a year ago, the data showed.

Average daily oil output (NGOIL=ECI), opens new tab rose to 1.55 million barrels per day, up from 1.34 million a year ago.
Nigeria relies on oil production for about two-thirds of government earnings and 90% of its foreign exchange income.

"The real growth of the oil sector was 12.11% year-on-year in Q4 2023, indicating an increase of 25.5% points relative to the rate recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2022 at -13.38%," said the statistics office.

PoliticsAhmed Idris: EFCC Deceived Me To Admit Involvement In ‘₦‎109.4bn Fraud’ by Estello(op): 5:21am On Feb 02, 2024
The former Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, has accused the EFCC of deceiving him to admit to the allegations of N109bn fraud against him.

The ex-AGF claimed that the EFCC told him they wanted to use him to get the minister of finance and some other governors.

Idris and his co-defendants are standing trial on 14 charges of stealing and criminal breach of trust to the tune of N109.5 billion.

Idris was arraigned alongside Godfrey Olusegun Akindele and Mohammed Kudu Usman, and a firm — Gezawa Commodity Market and Exchange Limited.

In a statement said to be written by Idris and dated May 16, 2022, which was partly read out by the prosecution witness, Hayatudeen Ahmed, in court on Thursday, the ex-AGF stated that the EFCC promised him that whatever information he gives would not be used against him.

The prosecution witness read the statement after being asked to while being cross-examined by Idris’ counsel, Chris Uche (SAN).

PoliticsYahaya Bello Dissociates Himself From Posters Linking Him To APC Chairman Seat by Estello(op): 3:56am On Jan 31, 2024
The immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yayaha Bello, has dissociated himself from the campaign posters linking him to the position of the Chairman of the All Progressive Congress.

A statement issued on Tuesday by the media office of the former governor blamed such a campaign on the “handiwork of some opposition leaders and some 5th columnists within the party.”

The media office of the immediate past governor noted that such insinuation was aimed at discrediting the former governor.

“Parts of the plans already being hatched is the circulation of campaign posters with the picture of His Excellency Alh. Yahaya Bello, CON, the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, insinuated that he is contesting for the position of the National Chairmanship of the All Progressives Congress. The insinuation is infantile, and false and should be disregarded.

“Our party is not in the process of conducting Congresses or a Convention, therefore, there is absolutely no basis for anyone to circulate any posters for party offices.

“Let it be made abundantly clear that His Excellency Alhaji Yahaya Bello did not authorise anyone to circulate any posters on his behalf as he remains a loyal party man who is committed to the leadership of the National Chairman of the Party, His Excellency Dr Abdullahi Ganduje.

“We urge members of the general public to disregard the mischief of the people circulating posters to create a false impression,” the statement noted.

PoliticsFG Officially Presents 4Ds As New Foreign Policy Documents by Estello(op): 5:19am On Dec 14, 2023
The federal government yesterday unveiled a new foreign policy the “4Ds”, which is primarily aimed at taking advantage of Nigeria’s relationship with other countries of the world.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, while presenting the new policy to the diplomatic community with over 160 heads of missions and relevant stakeholders gathered at the event in Abuja, stated that the new policy document provides a dynamic and new concept anchored on Democracy, Development, Demography and Diaspora.

Minister Tuggar had on assumption of office has announced the new policy, stressing that the 4Ds would be pursued “unrelatedly by bringing modern solutions to address complex challenges for national development.

The official launching therefore was expected the give the Minister the momentum to practically drive the new policy to an enviable height.

He maintained that Nigeria and indeed, Africa’s development hinges greatly on a new line of vision already articulated in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s new foreign policy concept.

Minister Tuggar added that democracy has come to stay as the universally acceptable form of government; that which guarantees freedom, human rights and the rule of law. He also expressed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening democracy in Africa.

He reiterated that in spite of its challenges, democracy must be upheld by the people as the best form of government to champion the will of the people.

The formal launching and presentation of the “Atrium” showcased an initiative that engages creative and innovative twist to promote Nigeria’s strategic interest to local and international communities.

The Minister said: “Being the largest democracy on the continent, the President’s keen interest in democracy as one of the 4Ds, is underscored by the opportunities that come with it as well as the challenges that confront it, especially in places where we are currently witnessing recourse to the unconstitutional change of government.

“This tendency which was initially localized in West Africa, appears to be gaining momentum as echoes of the coup attempt in Guatemala in South America rented the airwaves recently. For us as a country, democracy is what we have and what we must cherish. We will continue to encourage this both in Africa and across the world.

“There is need for the removal of major impediments to development in Nigeria and the African continent, as the continuous cycle of dependency does not favour our socio-economic growth and development.”

The Minister also harped on the need to leverage the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AFCFTA) to facilitate the exchange of goods and services while fast-track trade and investments through economic cooperation, fair trade, global health initiatives, stable and transparent global governance as well as building capacity for entrenching sustainable socio-economic development.

“Our population is currently estimated to be over 200 million people. This alludes to the country’s greatness and how its human capital endowment can be harnessed for national development, which informs the importance accorded to the 4-Ds

Foreign Policy of the President. We are happy to state that the youth population of this country is soaring high in Fintech, Music, Arts and Sports.”

“It is also important to underscore the fact that Nigerian Diaspora community plays a pivotal role in the development of the nation. These hardworking Nigerians all over the world have demonstrated in different capacities, their talents and skills and have in turn, been great ambassadors of this great nation.”

The Minister appreciated that the remittances of Nigerians living abroad is a significant contribution to Nigeria’s economic growth and development.

Christianity EtcApostle Suleman Feeds Migrants At Mexico-US Border, Donates 100,000 Pesos by Estello(op): 11:03pm On Nov 26, 2023

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ou9Le1MzVQo

In following the footsteps of his Lord and master, Jesus Christ, who fed 5000 men with five loaves of bread and two fish, the General Overseer and most senior pastor, Omega Fire Ministries, Apostle Johnson Suleman has fed hundreds of migrants at the Guatemalan Border in Mexico as part of his humanitarian aid and individual contribution to making the world a better place for all.

The #TouchoflovewithApostleSuleman feeding initiative which was done under his Touch Of Love Foundation that began several years ago and touching the Mexico-U.S city border in October, 2023, is one of the several interventions of the Apostle to the migrants who are currently facing severe dehumanizing conditions and dangers while trying to cross into the United States.

At a migrant shelter in a church provided by an evangelical minister, Pastor Victor Barrientos in the Mexico border town of Matamoros, Apostle Suleman not only fed the migrants himself but also prayed for God’s intervention in their situations.

Meanwhile, It is on records that Apostle Suleman is a man of God that has been feeding thousands of people for many years now in different cities. For instance, in Nigeria, it has become a routine that every week, he feeds thousands of Nigerians as well as helps many poor people in Auchi, Edo state and many other places. Papa, as he is fondly called, has been feeding his congregation every Saturday for many years now as well as providing several other assistances such as free healthcare to women and children, scholarships to the youths and financial assistance to the poor.

For instance, just last year, Apostle Suleman donated N20 million naira to the Benue State government to provide welfare and other basic needs to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state. Also, in 2019 and 2020 when the Corona Virus caused massive hardship and other challenges on Nigerians, the man of God still came to the rescue as he donated N10 million naira each to four northern states as well as a N5 million naira donation to support the IDPs in Benue.

The General Overseer’s philanthropic gestures has endeared him in the hearts of many, including past Nigerian presidents who sent encomiums to him, including while they were still in government. For instance, the immediate past president, Muhammadu Buhari as well as former president Goodluck Jonathan had these to say of him:

While then President Buhari described him as a spiritual leader whose “influence and generosity, especially to the poor and underprivileged continues to resonate,” former president Goodluck Jonathan had described Apostle Johnson Suleman as a “worthy example of a believer in faith, doctrine and charity.” He further said of Apostle Suleman thus: “ You have distinguished yourself as a man of strong devotion who is steadfast in the task of reconciling men to Christ and offering hope to many.”

So, because of his philanthropism, Apostle Johnson Suleman won the Edo Man of the Year award at the 10th edition of the Edo Festival and Awards ceremony (EFAC) held in London, the United Kingdom (UK) last year.

Meanwhile, the migrants at the Mexico-U.S border whom he fed have become part of the new multitude that has come to benefit from the philanthropic gestures of the man of God.

Apostle Suleman not only fed them but also made a cash donation of 100, 000 Mexican Pesos to the evangelical ministry led by the Mexican pastor, Victor Barrientos who has been providing shelter and other assistance to migrant families in Mexico from his church.

While making the donations and feeding the migrants, Apostle Johnson Suleman thanked the pastor for providing aids to migrants and promised to come back in few months’ time to further assist the migrants.

He said, “Pastor Victor, God bless you. How many of you know that Pastor Victor in Matamoros is doing a great job? And I want to thank you and say God bless you. In the next few months, I am going to be here again.”

“We will be here again and we will keep supporting you for all you do for the immigrants, all you do for the people and all you do for the rejected.”

“What you are doing is what I am doing in my country, and I understand. So, congratulations and God bless you.”

While praying for the immigrants, Apostle Suleman prayed saying, “May the Lord grant your requests and open your door, give you all testimonies and show you mercy in Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Why Help Migrants:

It has become a stark reality for thousands of migrants who, following delays in processing their papers, get stuck in Mexico every year while trying to cross into U.S. The migrants are often from across the globe, including from Nigeria, Venezuela, Cuba and Haiti and from Colombia, Panama and Honduras, among many other countries. Most times, these migrants walk on foot, from the city of Tapachula, near the Guatemalan border or from the Mexican border city of Matamoros towards the U.S boarder.

According to a report by AFP, about 3000 migrants walked on foot from a Mexican city to the U.S boarder on 30th October, 2023 alone in efforts to cross into the United States.

But walking on foot is just the least of the many harrowing situations and dangers that these migrants face in Mexico daily. Apart from the humanitarian crisis such as hunger, diseases and lack of shelter, migrants also face grave conditions like kidnappings, torture, extortion, rape, other forms of abuse and very commonly, death. Consequently, the Mexican border city of Matamoros has become one of the most notorious places for many suddenly missing migrants who end up dead or trafficked for various kinds of dehumanizing reasons.

A recent report by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), in a 2023 release tagged, Missing Migrants Project (MMP), said it documented about 686 deaths and disappearances of migrants on the US-Mexico border in 2022 alone, making it the deadliest land route for migrants worldwide on record.

Also, the report said while 696 migrant deaths were recorded in 2018 alone, in 2019 and 2020, 854 and 798 migrant deaths were recorded on the US-Mexico border, respectively.

Therefore, It is on this note that the popular Nigerian Apostle and great philanthropist, Apostle Johnson Suleman, brought succor to the thousands of migrants in Mexico through his Touch of Love Foundation.

Aside food and prayers, he also donated 100, 000 Mexican Pesos for the continuous assistance to migrants.

Expressing his joys over the assistance from Apostle Suleman, pastor Victor thanked the firebrand pastor, saying it is the first time ever that he was receiving financial support and food assistance from a man of God in his efforts of helping migrants.

He said, “Apostle, I am so grateful to God because God is the one that provides…Thank you so much.”

“In Matamoros, there are men that are called men of God. They only come and preach and then they leave.”

He said that Apostle Suleman not only came and preached but that he also provided food, served the food himself to the migrants and equally donated financially.

The Touch Of Love initiative of Apostle Johnson Suleman began many years ago and has helped millions of people in Nigeria and many other countries of the world. Papa, as he is fondly called, has been feeding his congregation every Saturday for many years now as well as providing several other assistances to people such as free healthcare to women and children, scholarships to the youths and financial assistance to the poor.

PoliticsCan The PDP Save Itself? - TonyeBarcanista by Estello(op): 7:42am On Nov 26, 2023
APC has settled the impasse in Ondo State, the Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has pledged to carry everyone along, while the Speaker has halted the ongoing impeachment process. The crisis only lasted for 6 weeks!

Meanwhile, PDP is yet to resolve:
Atiku/G5 Conflict almost 8 months after the 2023 General election

Obaseki/Legacy PDP & Obaseki/Shaibu conflicts in Edo State which has been subsisting for more than 3 years and 6 months respectively

Imo PDP conflict that led to wasted efforts in the November 11 governorship election

Kogi State conflict that led to our humiliating defeat 2 weeks ago.

National Secretary position that has already seen three persons laying claim to the office Udeh-Okoye (legally recognized), Samuel Anyanwu (legally kicked out) and Koeshedo (Damagun led NWC recognized)

In Rivers State the PDP is in crisis, while the leadership maintained an undignified silence.

Even on Social media there are PDP factions😀

A midterm convention is long overdue at this point!

Is the PDP incapable of solving its own problems? If the answer is positive, why should we expect Nigerians to entrust us with the the responsibility to solve our national problems? Charity begins at home

As of the time of filing this report at 06:13am, none of the other candidates have won any local government.

Governor Hope Uzodimma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has won 17 of the 27 local government results announced so far in the November 11, 2023 governorship poll.

Collation of results at the State Collation Centre started around 02:30am on Sunday in Owerri, the state capital, with the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Prof Abayomi Fashina, as the state Returning Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the election.

Though 18 parties fielded candidates in the poll, this year’s governorship election in Imo State has been described by analysts as a four-horse race between APC’s Uzodimma who is seeking re-election, Samuel Anyanwu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party’s Achonu Nneji and Jack Ogunewe of the Action Alliance.

As of the time of filing this report at 06:13am, none of the other candidates have won any local government.

The collation of results is, however, ongoing.

Like Imo, governorship elections were held in Kogi and Bayelsa on November 11, 2023, though the collation of results from the two states has been adjourned to Sunday morning.

After over five years of legal fireworks, Nigeria has finally succeeded in halting the enforcement of the $11 billion arbitration award in favour of P&ID.

In a judgment delivered by email, Robin Knowles, justice of the Commercial Courts of England and Wales, upheld Nigeria’s prayer on the ground that the ill-fated gas processing contract was obtained by fraud.

TheCable had reported on Saturday that the much-awaited judgment would be delivered on Monday.

A private arbitration tribunal had on January 31, 2017 ordered Nigeria to pay $6.6 billion to P&ID plus interest beginning from March 20, 2013.

With the interest rate fixed at seven percent amounting to $1 million a day, the potential payment had accumulated to over $11 billion before the verdict.
