Foreign AffairsUS Vows To ‘Dismantle’ International Criminal Court by Estello(op): 9:13am On Jul 14

https://www.tiktok.com/video/7662047466035973396?_r=1&_t=ZS-981Nrd52JRU

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday vowed to “dismantle” the International Criminal Court and urged other countries to join the effort as the Trump administration significantly escalates its campaign against the global institution.

Rubio accused the ICC of “waging a war against our country, not with bullets or missiles,” but with “the force of so-called international law.”

The administration’s ire against the ICC goes back to President Donald Trump’s first term, when it targeted the ICC for seeking to investigate alleged war crimes committed by US forces in Afghanistan. The second Trump administration has imposed a slew of sanctions against ICC officials for their attempts to investigate the US and Israel.

However, the State Department-led, “whole-of-government campaign” to dismantle the ICC is a significant escalation, particularly as it seeks to pressure countries around the world to join and threatens potential cuts to US assistance for those who don’t.

“Nations that refuse to reject the ICC’s false authority while relying on US assistance are likely to come under increased scrutiny,” a State Department official said Monday.

“Using all the tools at our government’s disposal, working beside every ally with whom we can make common cause, we will dismantle the ICC—brick by brick, if necessary,” Rubio wrote in a separate piece in the Wall Street Journal on Monday. Those tools include possible travel bans, visa revocations, and increased sanctions, the State Department official said.

The official said that countries “that partner with US law enforcement, host a US military presence, or benefit from the broader US security umbrella are being called upon to reject the ICC’s purported authority to prosecute American officials and servicemen,” the official said.

“We will watch with interest which nations join ranks with us against this threat to Americans who are willing to risk their lives to protect others,” they noted.

Top officials, including the secretary, deputy secretary, and US ambassadors, “are calling countries as part of a campaign to diplomatically isolate the International Criminal Court and ensure it cannot target Americans,” the official said.

The calls are meant to persuade countries who are party to the ICC to withdraw from it “and cut off any financial support to the court,” they said.

CNN has reached out to the ICC for comment.

The administration is also calling on nations that are not parties to the court, like the United States, “to leverage their diplomatic networks to take similar action alongside us.”

In his opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal, Rubio accused the ICC of being “backed and run by a powerful network of leftist nongovernment organizations, smug globalists, and hostile Third World governments united by their enmity toward the U.S.”

Rubio rejected allegations by outside organizations that the administration’s deportations to El Salvador and its deadly boat strikes on alleged narco-terrorists had violated international law and rebuffed a call by one organization, Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN), for the ICC to investigate alleged war crimes committed by the US in Iran, but he claimed that such actions could risk investigation by the court.

Omar Shakir, the executive director of DAWN, told CNN that Rubio mischaracterized DAWN’s “call to investigate all possible war crimes carried out in the war,” adding that it “begs the question: does Secretary Rubio believe US personnel should be investigated for war crimes in Iran?”

“History will judge governments on whether they defended the institutions designed to safeguard international law,” Shakir said. “It is not the ICC that Rubio is dismantling brick by brick—but the rules-based international order that grew out of the ashes of World War II.”

BusinessMan Loses ₦100,000 While Waiting For GTBank To Reverse Wrongful ₦310,000 Debit by Estello(op): 12:33am On Jun 12
Lagos Man Expected GTBank to Reverse Unauthorised N310,000 Debit. Additional N100,000 Left His Account

Clement Oku, a Lagos State resident, was ready to go to bed on May 22 when an unwelcoming notification of an unauthorised banking transaction of N100,000 came in from Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank).

Oku told FIJ that this is the second time in three years that thousands would be debited from his GTBank account without his permission.

He said that he had not shared his details with anyone as GTBank had alleged the last time he suffered a similar banking experience.

“I did not do anything but I saw N100,000 leave my account for no reason of mine. When I went to the bank to complain, the staff members said I would have to wait for eight working days,” Oku told FIJ.

In February 2024, Oku visited a GTBank branch in Alausa to make a withdrawal only to find that N310,000 had left his account. He said the bank told him that he had shared his details but he denied the cclaim

In early May, he told FIJ that he was on the verge of leaving his N310,000 “to God” after more than two years of seeking to get a refund of the disputed funds.

BusinessFirst Bank Refuse To Reverse Erroneous Bank Transfer Despite Court Order by Estello(op): 5:14am On Jun 11
Matthew Akinwale Dada, an equipment maintenance technician based in Rivers State, has narrated to FIJ how First Bank of Nigeria and Access Bank have continued to withhold the N500,000 he mistakenly transferred into the First Bank account of his late father-in-law on December 22, 2025.

Speaking with FIJ on Monday, Dada said the money was meant to be sent to his wife, Jemialu Oluwatoyin Janet, for safekeeping ahead of his son’s school fee payment in January. However, he mistakenly transferred the funds to his late father-in-law’s account because both his wife and her father banked with First Bank.

He explained that the transfer was made from his Access Bank account, and every effort to recover the money since the incident occurred has failed, despite repeated complaints to both banks and the submission of a court order.

“I wanted to transfer N500,000 to my wife on December 22, 2025, so she could keep it for my son’s school fees against January, but unfortunately, I mistakenly transferred it to my late father-in-law’s account instead,” Dada told FIJ.

“Both my wife and her father bank with First Bank of Nigeria, but I made the transfer through my Access Bank account.

“Immediately I discovered the mistake, I called Access Bank customer care and explained everything to them. My wife also contacted First Bank customer care, and both banks confirmed that the transaction was successful.”

REPEATED COMPLAINTS YIELDED NO RESULT
Despite promptly reporting the erroneous transfer, Dada said both banks repeatedly assured him that the issue would be resolved within 24 hours, but months later, the money remains unreversed.

“I called both First Bank and Access Bank several times and sent emails almost every week,” he said.

“They both responded and kept promising that the issue would be resolved within 24 hours, but nothing positive has happened till this moment.”

COURT ORDER SUBMITTED, YET NO REVERSAL
Dada also told FIJ that after several complaints, the banks requested a court order before processing the reversal of the funds.

He said he complied with the directive by submitting the required documents to both banks in February, but the money has still not been refunded.

“At some point, both banks asked for a court order before they could activate the reversal process,” he said.

“I submitted a copy of the court order to Access Bank through email and also submitted the original hard copy to First Bank at its Rumudara branch in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on February 2.

“Still, there has been no positive outcome from both banks.”

ACCESS BANK REQUESTED A FEE FOR VERIFICATION
Dada also disclosed that Access Bank later requested his consent to deduct N8,068 from his account for the verification of the court order submitted to First Bank.

He said the bank claimed the verification request came from First Bank.

“On March 3, Access Bank replied to one of my emails concerning the erroneous transfer,” Dada said.

“They asked me to give consent for the deduction of N8,068 from my Access Bank account to verify the authenticity of the court order I submitted to First Bank, claiming that First Bank requested it.

“I gave them written permission to conduct the verification, although I do not know whether the money has been deducted from my account. They, however, acknowledged receipt of my consent.”

When FIJ contacted First Bank via email on Wednesday to ask about the delay in reversing Dada’s funds, the bank responded and promised to look into the matter if Dada resent the court order in PDF format.

“We acknowledge your email regarding the unresolved erroneous transaction. Kindly be informed that we are unable to access the documents provided,” the bank responded.

“We therefore advise that Dada resend the court order in PDF format for further assistance.”

FIJ also contacted Access Bank via WhatsApp on the same day, but the bank did not respond. Subsequently, FIJ sent an email to the bank for comments on the matter.

“This is to acknowledge your mail. Our representative will share an update with you on the matter within 24-72 hours,” Access Bank replied. No other response had been received at press time.

BusinessGTBank Held Customer’s ₦134,400 After Failed Transfer For 17 Months by Estello(op): 5:05am On Jun 11
Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) has still not reversed the failed N134,400 transfer Oluwadamilola, a Lagos-based customer, made to a Sterling Bank account in 2024.

FIJ had earlier reported how the GTBank customer transferred the sum to the beneficiary’s account in November 2024, but the transaction failed. And since then, she has not received a reversal.

Oluwadamilola, who spoke with FIJ again last Friday, said, “My N134,400 is still with GTB. They have refused to reverse the sum to my account.”

We have been on this dispute now for 17 months, and the bank has continued to act like it’s nothing; not a single response to my emails from it,” she added.

“The last time I visited a bank branch close to my residence on the same matter, the official who attended to me also could not give me a definite answer on when it would be resolved.

“The bank’s handling of the dispute has been quite shocking to me.”

BACKGROUND
FIJ published a story on December 17, 2024, detailing how Oluwadamilola transferred N134,400 to a Sterling Bank account, but the beneficiary did not receive it.

After Oluwadamilola waited for many days and the sum had neither been reversed nor pushed to the recipient, she sent emails to both GTBank and Sterling Bank, seeking to know the status of the transaction.

In the end, only Sterling Bank responded, stating that the money was not in its possession. The bank advised Oluwadamilola to liaise with GTBank for a resolution.

When she liaised with GTBank and shared the transaction ID, she did not receive any helpful response from the financial institution.

PoliticsDefeating Insecurity Requires More Than Firepower by Estello(op): 5:12pm On May 28
The recent kidnapping incident in Oyo State has once again drawn national attention to Nigeria’s security challenges, triggering public concern and widespread reactions across social media platforms. While such incidents naturally generate fear and anger, they also often create narratives that overshadow the extensive efforts being made by security agencies on ground.

According to military authorities, in response to the incident, swift moves were made directing immediate reinforcement of security operations in the affected area, deploying aerial surveillance assets and specialized ground troops in collaboration with other security agencies.

It also suggested ongoing operations are already yielding valuable intelligence as troops intensify efforts to track down the perpetrators and ensure the safe recovery of victims.

Beyond the headlines and online commentaries, the reality remains that security operations against kidnappers and criminal networks are complex and intelligence-driven. Across the country, troops continue sustained offensives against terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, and other criminal elements under difficult and dangerous conditions.

While public frustration over insecurity is understandable, security experts warn that exaggerated narratives and misinformation can unintentionally create panic and undermine public confidence. Criminal groups often exploit fear and media amplification to project strength beyond their actual operational capacity.

As troops sustain surveillance and ground operations in affected communities, the incident also serves as a reminder that defeating insecurity requires more than firepower. Public cooperation, credible intelligence sharing, and responsible communication remain critical in supporting national security efforts.

For many Nigerians, the expectation now is clear — not only the safe rescue of victims, but continued evidence that security agencies remain proactive, responsive, and determined in confronting evolving threats across the country.

BusinessFinance, Insurance Sector Hits ₦1.93 Trillion As GDP Growth Slows To 3.8% by Estello(op): 11:20am On May 28
Financial institutions, including banks and insurance firms, recorded an 8.5 per cent growth in real Gross Domestic Product (GDP), contributing N1.93 trillion in the first quarter of 2026, compared to N1.78 trillion posted in the corresponding period of 2025.

This was revealed in the latest Q1 2026 GDP report released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

According to the report, the financial institutions sub-sector remained the largest contributor within the Finance and Insurance sector, accounting for N1.75 trillion in Q1 2026, up from N1.61 trillion in Q1 2025. The growth of about 8.4 per cent reflects sustained expansion in banking operations, credit financing, and other financial intermediation activities.

The insurance sub-sector also maintained positive growth momentum, rising to N180.95 billion during the quarter from N164.58 billion recorded a year earlier. This represents an increase of approximately 9.9 per cent, driven by improved premium generation, stronger underwriting activities, and increased market penetration.

The NBS noted that the Finance and Insurance sector consists of two major components — Financial Institutions and Insurance. Financial institutions accounted for 90.62 per cent of the sector in real terms, while insurance contributed 9.38 per cent in Q1 2026.

The report further stated that the sector grew by 46.91 per cent in nominal terms on a year-on-year basis. Financial institutions recorded 46.71 per cent growth, while the insurance segment posted a higher growth rate of 48.80 per cent.

According to the bureau, the overall nominal growth rate was 25.89 percentage points higher than the level recorded in Q1 2025 and 20.33 percentage points above the preceding quarter.

Quarter-on-quarter, the sector expanded by 18.86 per cent in nominal terms. Its contribution to nominal GDP stood at 3.83 per cent in Q1 2026, higher than the 3.07 per cent recorded in the same period last year and above the 2.91 per cent posted in the previous quarter.

In real terms, the Finance and Insurance sector recorded an 8.54 per cent growth rate, though this was 6.49 percentage points lower than the figure reported in Q1 2025. However, it was slightly higher by 0.24 percentage points compared to the preceding quarter.

On a quarter-on-quarter basis, real growth stood at 17.77 per cent, while the sector’s contribution to real GDP increased to 3.76 per cent, compared to 3.60 per cent in Q1 2025 and 2.56 per cent in Q4 2025.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s overall GDP growth slowed to 3.8 per cent in the first quarter of 2026, highlighting ongoing economic pressures despite the strong performance recorded in the banking and insurance industries.

BusinessFuel Prices May Ease As Global Crude Drops On US–Iran Diplomatic Progress by Estello(op): 8:26pm On May 26
Global fuel prices may see a downward adjustment in the coming days as crude oil prices continue to decline amid renewed diplomatic engagement between the United States and Iran.
On Monday morning, crude oil prices fell sharply from about $111 last week to $97.48 per barrel, driven by rising optimism that ongoing negotiations could lead to improved stability in the Middle East and possible reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The development has strengthened expectations that petrol, diesel, and aviation fuel prices may begin to ease if the downward trend in crude prices persists.

Earlier projections had suggested that any breakthrough between Washington and Tehran could significantly ease pressure on global oil supply routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, through which a large share of the world’s crude oil is transported.

Before Monday’s decline, Brent crude had traded between $103 and $105 per barrel over the weekend, following signals of progress in diplomatic discussions. However, by early Monday, prices slipped to $97.48, raising speculation of further reductions if supply conditions stabilise.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical oil transit corridors, accounting for roughly 20 percent of global crude shipments. Any disruption or reopening of the route has a direct impact on international energy prices.

Crude Oil Surge Previously Triggered Fuel Hike
Crude oil prices had surged significantly since tensions escalated between the United States and Iran in late February. At the peak of the crisis, prices climbed above $100 per barrel and at some point exceeded $115.

Before the conflict, oil traded below $70 per barrel, but the escalation led to a sharp increase in global energy costs.

In Nigeria, the impact was felt through higher pump prices, with petrol rising from about ₦830 per litre to around ₦1,300 per litre. Diesel and aviation fuel also recorded steep increases, forcing airlines and transport operators to warn of possible operational disruptions.

Dangote Refinery and Market Expectations
With crude prices now easing, industry analysts say there is growing speculation that domestic refiners, including the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, may review fuel pricing downward if the trend continues.

However, they stressed that any reduction would depend on multiple factors, including crude sourcing costs, foreign exchange rates, logistics expenses, and competitive market dynamics within Nigeria’s downstream sector.

US–Iran Negotiations Show Progress
Reports indicate that the United States and Iran have made progress toward a preliminary understanding aimed at de-escalating tensions and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

US President Donald Trump stated that discussions were advancing and that the waterway could be reopened under a broader regional agreement involving several Middle Eastern countries.

He added that he had engaged leaders across Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Pakistan, Türkiye, Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain, and Israel as part of the diplomatic efforts.

Trump also noted that while progress was being made, final details of the agreement were still under negotiation.

Iran Cautions Against Premature Conclusions
Iran’s foreign ministry confirmed that talks with the United States were ongoing but cautioned that no final agreement had been reached.

Spokesperson Esmail Baqai stated that while significant progress had been made on several issues, it was too early to suggest that a formal deal was imminent.

He emphasized that discussions were still underway and that concluding otherwise would be premature.

His remarks followed comments from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who suggested that a deal could potentially be reached soon.

Possible Impact on Global Oil Market
The proposed framework reportedly includes a temporary ceasefire extension, reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and continued negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme.

If successfully implemented, the agreement could ease global supply concerns and place further downward pressure on crude oil prices.

For Nigeria and other oil-dependent economies, a sustained drop in crude prices may bring some relief to consumers who have faced months of high fuel costs.

However, analysts caution that any reduction at the pump will depend on domestic factors such as exchange rate stability, landing costs, and pricing decisions by fuel importers and refiners.

PoliticsN286 Contract Allegations Puts Lagos Lawmaker, Adewale Under Pressure by Estello(op): 3:08pm On May 09
Hon. Temitope Adedeji Adewale, the lawmaker representing Ifako-Ijaiye I Federal Constituency in [Lagos State] is facing mounting scrutiny over allegations linking him to a ₦286 million government contract, sparking debate over ethics, transparency, and his political future.
The controversy follows claims connecting the legislator to Titans and Tulip Resources Limited, a company awarded a Lagos State contract for lane marking projects across the state in 2022.
Reports indicate that the contract remains active, with critics questioning whether the alleged relationship between the lawmaker and the company amounts to a conflict of interest or abuse of office.

The allegations have triggered reactions from legal and governance experts, many of whom argue that public officials must avoid situations capable of undermining confidence in government institutions.
A Lagos-based lawyer, who spoke anonymously, stated that any proven financial interest by a serving lawmaker in a company handling public contracts could raise ethical concerns under existing public service regulations.
Another governance analyst noted that beyond legal implications, the issue touches on public trust and accountability, especially at a time when citizens are demanding greater transparency from elected officials.

Observers have also called for clarity regarding the award process and operational capacity of the company involved.
A civil society advocate urged authorities to release details of the procurement process, including approvals and compliance procedures, insisting that Nigerians deserve full transparency on how the contract was secured.

Within Ifako-Ijaiye, reactions to the allegations have continued to grow, with some residents questioning whether the lawmaker should seek another term in office.

A community leader in the constituency said the matter goes beyond politics and speaks directly to accountability and responsible representation.
Another resident expressed disappointment over the controversy, saying voters expected leadership free from allegations capable of damaging public confidence.
However, supporters of Adewale have appealed for caution, stressing that the claims remain allegations until officially proven.
One supporter argued that the lawmaker should not be condemned prematurely, pointing to projects and developmental efforts credited to his tenure in the constituency.
Pressure is also increasing on anti-corruption and regulatory agencies to investigate the allegations and determine whether any wrongdoing occurred.
According to a public affairs commentator, the controversy presents an opportunity for institutions to demonstrate commitment to accountability and the rule of law.

The growing controversy is seen by many political observers as a defining moment for Adewale, who has been regarded by supporters as one of the emerging political figures in Lagos politics.
For voters in Ifako-Ijaiye, the allegations may become a major factor in future political decisions as discussions around integrity, transparency, and leadership continue to shape public opinion ahead of the next elections.

STATEMENT ON RESIGNATION FROM THE AFRICAN DEMOCRATIC
CONGRESS (ADC) AND JOINING THE NIGERIA DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS
(NDC)

Most of us are aware of developments concerning the ADC that have
collectively resulted in a division of the coalition with some leaders moving to
the NDC and some remaining in the ADC.

We had hoped that ADC would be the vehicle that would unite the opposition.
That is now clearly no longer the case. In these circumstances therefore, we
must each individually make a decision as to whether to remain with the ADC
or move to the NDC.

After due consultation, careful deliberation and prayerful reflection, I have joined the NDC. I am convinced that this is the path that will enable us to
deliver the benefits of good governance to those to whom they are due - every
citizen, without exception.

The battle ahead remains formidable, but I invite you to join us on this exciting,
though sometimes turbulent, journey to a brighter future that has been long-
promised and that has so far proven elusive, but that is, by the Grace of God,
now imminent.

Sincerely,

BusinessZenith Bank Expands Into Côte D’ivoire, Deepens West African Footprint by Estello(op): 5:01am On May 06
Zenith Bank has entered Côte d’Ivoire, and here’s what it means

Zenith Bank has officially launched its subsidiary in Côte d’Ivoire, and this is a significant move for the bank.

With this expansion, Zenith is now stepping fully into Francophone West Africa, going beyond its traditional presence in English-speaking markets.

According to its CEO, Adaora Umeoji, the goal is to make cross-border transactions easier, especially for businesses operating across different parts of West Africa.

Côte d’Ivoire is one of the region’s strongest economies, so this move could open up new opportunities not just for Zenith Bank, but also for Nigerian businesses looking to expand.

Some analysts believe Nigerian banks are gradually extending their influence across Africa, and moves like this seem to support that idea.

Zenith Bank Plc has officially launched its subsidiary in Côte d’Ivoire, marking a significant step in its ongoing expansion across Africa and entry into Francophone West Africa.

The new subsidiary, Zenith Bank Côte d’Ivoire, received regulatory approval in December 2025 from the country’s Ministry of Finance and Budget and operates under the supervision of the West African Monetary Union (UMOA) Banking Commission. The bank will operate from its headquarters in Plateau, Abidjan’s main business district.

The official opening ceremony, held on April 29, 2026, drew senior government officials, regulators from both Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire, and business leaders, reflecting the growing economic ties between Anglophone and Francophone markets in the region.

The launch positions Zenith Bank – the first Nigerian bank to cross the ₦5 trillion market capitalisation mark – to play a more active role in facilitating cross-border trade and investment within the West African Economic and Monetary Union. The subsidiary will focus on corporate banking, trade finance, and structured financial solutions tailored to businesses operating across Africa and globally.

Group Managing Director and CEO, Adaora Umeoji, described the move as a strategic step toward building a truly pan-African financial institution, noting that the expansion opens a new corridor into Francophone markets while reinforcing the bank’s role in connecting African businesses to global opportunities.

The subsidiary will be led by Managing Director and CEO Cédric Tano, who brings over two decades of banking experience. He stated that the bank aims to combine global standards with local expertise to support businesses, drive innovation in financing, and contribute to economic growth in Côte d’Ivoire and the wider region.

Zenith Bank’s entry into Côte d’Ivoire forms part of a wider expansion strategy targeting new African markets, particularly in Francophone regions. The bank has also signaled plans to expand into Central Africa, with Cameroon identified as a key next step.

With an existing presence across multiple African countries and global financial hubs, the latest move reinforces Zenith Bank’s ambition to strengthen its position as a leading African financial institution while supporting regional economic integration and trade.

This expansion comes at a time when Côte d’Ivoire’s banking sector continues to grow, making it an attractive destination for regional and international financial institutions seeking to tap into West Africa’s evolving economic landscape.

Seyi Tinubu Brokers Peace Between Oshodi-Isolo Council Chairman, Almarrof-Oloyede, and MC Oluomo

The two warring factions pledged to cease all hostilities and foster peace for the benefit of Oshodi-Isolo, Lagos State, and Nigeria as a whole.

niversity Enugu, ICAN to Partner for Creativity, Industrial Growth, Leadership, Entrepreneurship

Maduka University, Ekwegbe, Nsukka, and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) are set to forge a strategic partnership aimed at promoting creativity, industrial growth, leadership, and entrepreneurship.

This was the focus on Wednesday when the President of ICAN, Mallam Haruna Nma Yahaya, led a high-powered delegation to the university to explore collaborative opportunities that would deepen academic excellence and professional relevance.

Yahaya, accompanied by Council members, the Registrar, and other officials of the Institute, was at the university as part of activities marking the 20th Eastern Zonal Accountants’ Conference held at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

Receiving the delegation, the Vice-Chancellor of Maduka University, Professor Charles Ogbulogo, expressed appreciation for the visit, describing it as timely and significant for a university he said is “on a journey of discovery” with a clear focus on entrepreneurship, leadership, and national development.

Speaking on the theme “Entrenching Industrial Training at Maduka University,” Ogbulogo emphasized the institution’s commitment to hands-on learning, noting that the university prioritizes practical exposure to prepare students for real-world challenges, alongside the development of both technical and soft skills across diverse fields including publishing, medicine, petroleum, and mechanical industries.

The Vice-Chancellor further highlighted the university’s four cardinal pillars—Academic Excellence, Estate Development, Teaching Hospital, and Industrial Entrepreneurship—while reiterating the vision of the Founder and Chancellor, Dr. Samuel Maduka Onyishi, to positively impact society through education, agriculture, healthcare, and technology.

Ogbulogo stressed the importance of partnering with ICAN, assuring the Institute of the university’s readiness for meaningful collaboration.

He also underscored the need to promote ICAN-related activities on campus to foster creativity, leadership, and entrepreneurial capacity among students.

Commending ICAN for its role in producing highly skilled professionals, he acknowledged the Institute’s contributions to governance, accountability, and national development, pledging the university’s support in encouraging staff and students to actively participate in ICAN programmes as part of its vision to build a purpose-driven institution.

Responding, ICAN President Yahaya expressed appreciation for the warm reception and commended the university’s rapid development, noting that its achievements in infrastructure, learning environment, and institutional integrity within less than three years demonstrate purposeful leadership.

“Maduka University stands as a compelling reminder that impact is not a function of age, but of purpose,” he said, adding that “wealth finds its true meaning when invested in people.”

Yahaya emphasized ICAN’s role as a driver of professionalism, accountability, and transparency, describing the Institute as “a pillar of national development.” He noted a strong alignment between ICAN and Maduka University, particularly in their shared commitment to entrepreneurship and innovation.

He outlined potential areas of collaboration to include curriculum development aligned with global standards, integration of emerging fields such as digital finance, sustainability reporting, and forensic accounting, as well as structured mentorship and industry exposure for students.

The ICAN President also encouraged the university to leverage the Institute’s expertise in areas such as the development of its Accountancy programme, accreditation processes, and broader academic and professional partnerships.

CrimeCourt Restricts Media Access To Bail Hearing Of Alleged Coup Suspects In Abuja by Estello(op): 12:54pm On Apr 27
Journalists were on Monday, April 27, 2026, prevented from covering the bail hearing of six individuals accused of involvement in an alleged coup plot against the administration of President Bola Tinubu at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Court officials, backed by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), instructed reporters to leave the courtroom shortly before the presiding judge, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, commenced proceedings.

An unidentified court official said the directive came from the judge, while a DSS operative also told journalists that an explanation would be provided later, though none was immediately given.

Reporters, who had arrived at about 8:00 a.m. to cover the proceedings, were compelled to exit the courtroom by 9:07 a.m.

The case, which has attracted significant public attention, involves six defendants arraigned last Wednesday by the Federal Government over an alleged failed coup attempt.

The accused include Mohammed Ibrahim Gana, a retired major-general; Erasmus Victor, a retired navy captain; Ahmed Ibrahim, a police inspector; Zekeri Umoru, an electrician at the Presidential Villa; as well as Bukar Goni and Abdulkadir Sani, a Zaria-based Islamic cleric.

They are facing a 13-count charge bordering on treason, terrorism, failure to disclose information, and money laundering. All six defendants pleaded not guilty.

Following their arraignment, Justice Abdulmalik ordered an accelerated hearing of the case and fixed April 27 for the determination of their bail applications. She also directed that they remain in DSS custody pending the hearing.

In a related development, former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva was mentioned in seven of the charges but is not listed as a defendant. Sources claim he is currently at large.

Earlier reports indicate that about 40 suspects, including serving and retired military officers as well as civilians, were arrested in connection with the alleged plot. While 36 serving officers have been arraigned before a court-martial in Abuja, others remain under investigation.

Monday’s restriction of journalists is not the first of such incidents in Justice Abdulmalik’s courtroom, as reporters and observers have on previous occasions been asked to leave sittings, often due to space limitations.

PropertiesHouse Rent In Lagos Fourth Most Expensive In Africa— Report by Estello(op): 3:07pm On Apr 26
A new report by Fortren & Company has placed Lagos as the fourth most expensive city in Africa for rental housing, highlighting growing pressure on affordability that is pushing many residents away from central urban areas.
The study, which analysed average rents for two-bedroom apartments across major African cities, ranked Abidjan first, followed by Cape Town and Accra. Lagos came in fourth, ahead of cities such as Douala, Nairobi, Kigali, Dar es Salaam, Cairo, and Casablanca.

In Lagos’ premium neighbourhoods—including Ikoyi, Victoria Island, and Banana Island—the average yearly rent for a luxury two-bedroom apartment is estimated at about $19,379 (roughly ₦26.8 million). This is significantly lower than Abidjan’s $41,671, Cape Town’s $27,813, and Accra’s $26,299 for similar properties.

However, analysts warn that although Lagos is fourth on the list, rent inflation in the city is among the fastest on the continent. Over the past two years, residential rents have reportedly surged by 50 to 200 percent, driven by strong demand, limited housing supply, and broader economic pressures.

Housing experts note that affordability has become a major concern, with some estimates showing that renters in Lagos now spend up to 70 percent of their income on housing—far above the 30 percent affordability benchmark recommended internationally.

The rising cost of rent is also reshaping settlement patterns in the city. Many residents are moving from central districts to outer suburbs in search of cheaper accommodation. Yet even in these outlying areas, rents for standard two-bedroom apartments now typically range between ₦1.5 million and ₦2.5 million annually, showing that the pressure is widespread.

Market observers attribute the situation to a mix of factors, including high inflation, expensive construction materials, elevated borrowing costs, and the weakening naira. These conditions have made homeownership more difficult, increasing demand in the rental sector and pushing prices higher.

Another key driver is the pricing structure in high-end areas, where many luxury properties are denominated in US dollars. This practice, analysts say, limits access to a small segment of wealthy Nigerians and expatriates, keeping rents elevated.

Some ultra-luxury apartments in exclusive parts of Ikoyi reportedly command as much as $130,000 per year, underscoring the sharp divide within Lagos’ housing market.

Across Africa, similar trends are visible. Cape Town has seen rent increases of nearly 70 percent since 2014, partly due to rising demand and the growth of short-term rental platforms. In Accra, strong economic activity and expatriate demand—boosted by multinational companies and diplomatic missions—continue to strain limited housing supply.

The report also highlights structural issues affecting rental markets across the continent. In Nigeria and several other African countries, tenants are often required to pay one to two years’ rent upfront, a practice that places heavy financial pressure on households.

Experts argue that this system persists due to weak credit infrastructure and low trust between landlords and tenants, prompting property owners to demand large advance payments as security.

While the housing crisis continues to deepen, analysts say opportunities exist for investors, particularly in developing affordable rental housing such as one- and two-bedroom apartments, which are increasingly in demand in urban centres like Lagos.

However, they caution that without significant policy reforms to expand housing supply, improve financing access, and regulate rental practices, affordability challenges in Lagos are likely to worsen in the coming years.

CrimeCourt Clears Duke-Abiola, Slams Police With ₦100 Million Damages by Estello(op): 9:14pm On Apr 23
A High Court in Abuja has struck out all charges brought against Zainab Duke-Abiola, ruling that the actions of the Nigeria Police Force violated her fundamental human rights.

Delivering judgment, Justice E. Okpe condemned the conduct of the police as “inhuman and degrading,” stating that it amounted to a serious breach of her constitutional rights.

The court subsequently awarded ₦100 million in damages against the police, former Inspector-General Usman Alkali Baba, and four other defendants.

Duke-Abiola had filed the suit over alleged harassment and what she described as a media trial by the police following accusations that she assaulted a police orderly. Other parties named in the case included Inspector Teju Moses and the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Umar.

In her defence, she firmly denied the allegation, insisting no such incident ever occurred in her residence. She pointed to the presence of CCTV cameras in her home as evidence that could disprove the claim and maintained that she was the victim of a deliberate setup.

Justice Okpe, in his ruling, described the incident as a “forceful abduction” and a calculated attempt to frame her, adding that she was unlawfully detained and publicly humiliated without due process.

The court not only dismissed all charges but also ordered the police to issue a public apology in two national newspapers. It further granted a perpetual injunction restraining the authorities from any future harassment or intimidation of Duke-Abiola.

TravelUpdate On Reconstruction Of 108km Ibadan-Ife-Ilesa Road by Estello(op): 5:08am On Apr 17
MASSIVE PROGRESS! THE ILESA-IFE-IBADAN HIGHWAY IS CHANGING BEFORE OUR EYES!

If you’ve traveled the Ibadan-Ife-Ilesa road recently, you’ll know this isn't just a "patch-up" job. We are witnessing a total transformation as the Federal Government’s 108km concrete road revolution hits high gear!
I’ve been on the ground to track exactly how far we’ve come. Here is the latest update you need to know:

📍 THE ILESA/IWARAJA END: Construction has advanced significantly from the Iwaraja Junction. We are now over 40 kilometers in, and the concrete paving is almost at the Ile-Ife Junction!
Clearing is currently ongoing at the Ife end to make way for the pavers.

📍 THE IBADAN/IKIRE END: It’s happening at both ends! Work is pushing hard from Ibadan toward Ife. Concrete paving is already achieved on several sections, and clearing has reached all the way to Ikire on one carriageway.

Why this matters? We are moving away from asphalt that washes away after one rainy season. This is Rigid Pavement (Concrete), built to last 50 years! No more deep potholes, just smooth, durable road for our traders, students, and travelers.

CrimeOndo Police Smash Bomb Plot, Nab Six In Akure by Estello(op): 4:31pm On Apr 16
The Ondo State Police Command has thwarted a deadly bomb attack targeting Akure, the state capital, with six suspects now in custody and materials linked to improvised explosive devices recovered from their hideout.
State Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal announced the development during a press briefing in Akure, calling it a landmark operational success for the command.

Acting on credible intelligence about a criminal syndicate operating across state boundaries, officers were tactically deployed to a rented apartment in the Oke-Odu area the group’s alleged base of operations — where they moved in and neutralised the threat before any attack could be launched.

The six suspects arrested are Adekunle Prosper, 56; Ojo Olumide, 39; Tope Kolawole, 40; Ahmed Salihu, 40; Bolaji Adebowale, 46; and Gbadebo Abidemi, 43.

A search of the premises yielded bottles, sugar, mobile phones, cash, laptops, weapons, identity cards and motorcycles. Investigators say preliminary assessments confirm some of these items were earmarked for building explosive devices. Authorities also recovered a document charting potential target locations — pointing to a carefully planned and coordinated operation.

Lawal stressed that the swift intervention almost certainly saved lives and prevented significant destruction of property.

Ten Suspected Cultists Also Arrested

In a separate operation, the command’s Special Anti-Cultism Squad arrested ten suspected cultists during a crackdown in Ondo Town, following intelligence reports of resurgent cult activity in the area.

Among those apprehended was a suspected kingpin identified as Oluwatosin Temitope, commonly known as “T-Money,” who is linked to the shooting of a man identified as “Primo” at Oka Junction in March 2026. Items seized included a firearm, cutlasses, a battle axe, cult insignia and charms.

Lawal reaffirmed the command’s unwavering commitment to public safety, confirming that all suspects remain in detention and will be formally charged upon conclusion of investigations. He also called on residents to stay alert and share useful information with security agencies, while urging landlords to thoroughly vet prospective tenants before renting out their properties.

PoliticsAmaechi: ADC Needs A Strong Candidate We Can’t Count On Tinubu For Power by Estello(op): 5:31pm On Apr 15
Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi threw down the gauntlet at the African Democratic Congress (ADC) national convention in Abuja on Tuesday, calling on the opposition party to unite and rally around a formidable candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking bluntly to party faithful, Amaechi made clear that the ruling administration has no intention of yielding ground voluntarily. “ADC must decide on a viable candidate. President Tinubu will not give us power,” he declared.

The outspoken politician also took aim at what he described as government efforts to suppress opposition gatherings, questioning the legitimacy of such moves. “Why would government officials deny you the right to gather when the constitution guarantees it?” he asked.

Amaechi went further, accusing the current administration of paying lip service to democratic values while undermining them in practice. “How can a man who claimed to be a democrat be stopping democracy? Tell me what to tell President Tinubu,” he charged.

On the security crisis gripping the nation, Amaechi painted a grim picture, lamenting the thousands of Nigerians killed, displaced, or abducted under the watch of the present government — and faulting its leadership priorities.

In perhaps his sharpest remarks of the evening, he turned his fire on public officials he accused of looting the system with zero remorse. “These guys do not care at all. What they care about is money. They don’t deny that they are thieves and land grabbers,” he said.

Amaechi closed by urging ADC stakeholders to close ranks, insisting that only a credible, united front stands any chance of ending the current administration’s grip on power in 2027.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Okoye Shines As Udinese Keeper Earns Serie A Team Of The Week Spot by Estello(op): 12:27pm On Apr 15
Maduka Okoye has been named in the Serie A Team of the Week after delivering an outstanding performance in Udinese Calcio’s emphatic 3-0 victory over AC Milan.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper secured a clean sheet in a confident and composed display, standing out among several goalkeepers who also recorded shutouts during matchweek 32. His commanding presence played a crucial role in helping Udinese seal a dominant win.

Okoye’s inclusion in the prestigious weekly lineup sees him featured alongside teammates Arthur Atta and Jurgen Ekkelenkamp, as well as notable performers such as Robin Gosens, Rafael Obrador, Denzel Dumfries, Scott McTominay, Riccardo Orsolini, Marcus Thuram, Sebastiano Esposito and Donyell Malen.

The recognition highlights Okoye’s growing influence this season. He has now registered eight clean sheets in 24 league appearances and recently achieved three consecutive shutouts for the first time since joining Udinese in 2023.

His impressive club form has also earned him a return to the Super Eagles setup after missing out on the Africa Cup of Nations in 2025. He featured during the March international window, playing in Nigeria’s 2-1 friendly win over Iran in Antalya, before a thigh injury ruled him out of the subsequent 2-2 draw against Jordan.

Despite the injury setback, Okoye remains determined to solidify his place in the national team.

“I was very happy to be invited back to the national team,” he said via the club’s official platform. “It means a lot to me both professionally and personally, and I hope to earn many more call-ups.”

Since making his debut against Brazil in 2019, Okoye has earned 19 caps for Nigeria. However, he continues to face stiff competition for the number one jersey, with Arthur Okonkwo impressing at Wrexham AFC and Stanley Nwabali also pushing for a regular starting role.

Christianity EtcIslamic And Christian God Not My Belief – Wole Soyinka by Estello(op): 7:16am On Apr 14
Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, has stated that he does not believe in the God of either Christianity or Islam, describing himself instead as an atheist with strong spiritual awareness.
He made the remark during an interview with Larry Madowo on CNN, where he spoke about his personal beliefs and religious background.

Soyinka explained that he finds traditional Orisa worship more appealing than Christianity and Islam, citing its artistic, creative, and mysterious qualities. According to him, the traditional belief system is also more open and less associated with violence compared to the other two religions.

The renowned playwright noted that he was raised with exposure to both Christianity and indigenous Orisa practices, but found himself more drawn to the latter due to its depth and cultural richness.

He added that the inclusive nature of Orisa worship allowed foreign religions to gain influence over it, sometimes altering its original essence.

Speaking further, Soyinka said that while he does not subscribe to the Christian or Islamic concept of God, he believes every human possesses a spiritual core and considers himself highly sensitive to spiritual experiences.
