Business / 10 High-paying Jobs You Can Do On The Side by eugyno: 12:30pm On Aug 21, 2015
Trying to make some extra cash? Have free time you don't know what to do with? Trying to develop or hone a new skill? You should consider getting a side job.

Brie Reynolds, the director of online content for FlexJobs, an online service specializing in telecommuting and remote work, says "side jobs" are defined as anything part-time, including freelance, temporary, short- or long-term, work-from-home, or in-person flexible gigs.

To qualify for the list, each job had to be considered flexible (and not full time), and had to pay at least double the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour.

Here's FlexJobs' list of 10 high-paying side jobs you might want to consider:

1. Sign language interpreter
Pay: $36.50 an hour

Type of flexibility: Part-time

Description: For those with sign language skills and an Interpreter's License (which are usually state-sponsored), part-time and freelance contracts are often available. Depending on the employer, you'll help different populations with hearing impairments communicate with interpretation.

2. Software developer
Pay: Up to $30 an hour

Type of flexibility: flexible schedule, part-time hours, telecommuting

Description: Software development jobs are one of the most in-demand positions available today, and many offer part-time and project-based work. Depending on the gig, you might be updating existing websites, creating new templates, helping to develop new websites and apps, and other related tasks.

3. Online communications associate
Pay: Up to $25 an hour

Type of flexibility: Telecommute, part-time

Description: Online community management positions are a growing area for part-time work. Responsibilities typically include updating web content, managing social media, providing system administration, writing content, and creating reports.

4. Merchandise coordinator
Pay: $21 an hour

Type of flexibility: temporary, freelance, short-term

Description: A small amount of previous merchandising experience is needed for these types of jobs, where you'll support a merchandising team by maintaining and updating information such as reports, samples, and updates from other teams.

5. Bilingual legal assistant
Pay: Up to $21 an hour

Type of flexibility: freelance, short-term

Description: For someone with multilingual skills and previous legal experience, bilingual legal assistant jobs are often project or temporary jobs where you'll help an organization with a specific case or issue, reviewing legal documents using your language skills.

6. Freelance product photographer
Pay: Up to $20 an hour

Type of flexibility: temporary, part-time, freelance

Description: Make no mistake — photography side jobs require someone who is highly skilled in photography and related software use for editing and retouching photos. Previous photography experience is almost always required, and graphic design and Photoshop experience is a plus.

7. Bookkeeper
Pay: Up to $19 an hour

Type of flexibility: temporary, flexible schedule, potential for very part-time hours

Description: Plenty of part-time bookkeeping jobs exist, for both small and large companies. The responsibilities typically usually include using QuickBooks to do reconciliation, accounts payable, accounts receivable, etc. — so at least some experience (and relevant skills) are required.

8. Copy editor/writer
Pay: Up to $17 an hour

Type of flexibility: temporary, part-time, telecommute

Description: Copy editors and writers can be responsible for the writing, execution, and proofreading of materials across digital and print platforms. Depending on the employer, they may write and edit for marketing materials, editorial content, social media, and other types of material.

9. Temporary transcript processor
Pay: $15 an hour

Type of flexibility: part-time, temporary

Description: Data entry jobs like transcript processing are a great side job for people who love to work independently, have solid attention to detail, and enjoy the unique challenges of data entry. From a variety of sources, data entry specialists are needed to input data into the correct corresponding fields quickly and accurately, and working well under pressure is a must.

10. City guide writer
Pay: $50-$100/project

Type of flexibility: freelance, telecommute

Description: Travel and tourism businesses, as well as real estate companies, often hire writers to write city and/or neighborhood guides with information about population size, shopping, recreation, culture, entertainment, thing to do, climate, transit, and more.

Business / The Only Good Reasons To Start A Business by eugyno: 11:56am On Aug 21, 2015
There are loads of good reasons to become an entrepreneur, right? You get to be your own boss, do your own thing, set your own hours, benefit a cause, achieve personal fulfillment, be happy, and steer clear of the evil tyranny of the corporate world, to name a few.

The only problem is that none of those are good reasons to start your own business because they’re all self-serving. All that popular dogma is nothing but feel-good nonsense manufactured by self-serving bloggers or content generators vying for clicks.

The motives behind successful entrepreneurs always point to customer value. As a veteran of the high-tech industry who’s worked with dozens of successful founders, I can only think of a handful and even those are not necessarily sufficient to guarantee anything, let alone a profitable growth business.

You’ve come up with a better solution to a big problem.
This is hands-down the most common basis for Silicon Valley startups, and with good reason: It’s a requirement for venture funding. If you want to get VCs interested, you’ve got to have a solid problem statement and a solution that’s way better than anything out there.

The dream team comes together.
Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. Bill Gates and Paul Allen. Paul McCartney and John Lennon. When talented people with shared interests who complement each other’s skillsets come together, sparks fly and great endeavors are born.

You’re obsessed.
Obsession is the basis for lots of successful entrepreneurs. If you’re so passionate about something that it’s all you think about and you don’t believe anyone else knows how to do it right, then striking out on your own may very well be the right path for you. That’s certainly been the case with Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk.

Opportunity knocks.
When the stars align, it feels as if you’ve been kissed by an angel, or opportunity just happens to fall in your lap, you owe it to yourself to go for it or risk spending the rest of your life wondering what might have been. If the universe is trying to tell you something, it’s a good idea to listen, especially if there’s funding involved.

You’re desperate.
There’s a good reason why people who grow up with nothing to lose – like SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son or FUBU CEO Daymond John – often become great entrepreneurs. They’re highly motivated to take risks. Also, if no one will hire you, what have you got to lose? If necessity is the mother of invention then desperation is the father of motivation.

It’s in your DNA.
This may sound like a hokey reason but it’s not. If your gut tells you that it’s what you’re meant to do, that it’s your destiny, then you should consider it, especially if your instincts have served you well in the past. Some people – Donald Trump, for example – actually grew up with it so their risk tolerance is high.

You have mega-experience.
Once you’ve learned the ropes, have some wins and losses under your belt, know everything there is to know about how a business works, and it’s something you’ve always wanted to do, that’s a good enough reason in my book. One caveat, though: the closer it is to your functional expertise, the better.

You’re accomplished at something in demand.
Expertise is a great reason to start a company, as long as you’re near the top of your field or have a truly differentiated value proposition (think Whole Foods’ John Mackey or Michael Dell). Your capability can be anything from coding or product design to cooking or winemaking, but if it’s a crowded field, beware.

Look at it this way. Markets are competitive and customers couldn’t care less about your self-serving motives for being in business. For your company to succeed over the long haul, customers have to see a strong, differentiated value proposition to buy your products or services instead of a market full of alternatives. If they don’t, it doesn’t matter what your reasons are for being an entrepreneur. You won’t be successful.

1. They meditate.
Ray Dalio, the founder of Bridgewater Associates, told The Huffington Post in 2013 that "Meditation, more than anything in my life was the biggest ingredient of whatever success I've had." Dalio, however, is not alone. Oprah, Rupert Murdoch, Russell Simmons, Arianna Huffington, Bill Ford and Padmasree Warrior have all attributed mediation as a huge component to their success.

Taking care of your body and mind by relaxing, exercising, healthy eating and getting enough sleep are all ways to improve your chances of success.

2. They wake up early.
President Obama, Richard Branson, Jack Dorsey, Larry Schultz, Tim Cook and Xerox CEO Ursula Burns are known to be early risers. How has this attributed to their success? Because early risers are able to start their days ahead of everyone else by responding to others, exercising and finding some personal time, early risers also tend to be happier and are more proactive.

3. They network.
Successful people realize the importance of networking. In fact, research has found that networking can lead to people performing better at work and increases the chance of landing a job. Networking helps our successful people be more innovative. According to Dale Carnegie’s classic “How To Win Friends & influence People,” successful people rarely complain or criticize. They are sincere and try to be empathetic.

4. Keep themselves busy.
Successful people are rarely idle. Achievers like LBJ and Robert Moses were known to work 60-65 hours per work. Elon Musk works a whooping 80-100 hours per week and has said, “That's the type of work ethic an entrepreneur needs to have.”

5. They know when to say "no."
“The difference between successful people and really successful people is that really successful people say no to almost everything.” - Warren Buffett

Successful people realize that by saying "no" to negativity, extra work and activities that waste time, they can focus on increasing their productivity. If they say "yes" to everyone or everything, they’ll be too distracted and will not accomplish tasks that have to be done.

Related: Why 'No' is the Most Important Word You'll Ever Say

6. They don’t watch TV, they read.
According to Thomas Corley, author of "Rich Habits: The Daily Success Habits Of Wealthy Individuals,” 67 percent of rich people only watch TV for one hour or less per day. Corley also found only 6 percent of the wealthy watch reality shows, while 78 percent of the poor do.

Additionally, 86 percent of the wealthy love to read with an impressive 88 percent claiming that they read for self-improvement for 30 minutes or more per day.

7. They write to-do lists the night before.
Successful people are known for writing their to-do-lists the night before so that they are able to set priorities for the following day. They number their lists as well to identify which tasks are the most important.

8. They set goals and visualize.
Joel Brown interviewed a number of high achievers for Entrepreneur and found that “Ninety-five percent of the successful achievers I have interviewed practice writing down their goals, plans, or visions for success on a regular basis.” Successful people do this the night before, or first thing in the morning so that they are prepared to tackle the challenges that await them.''

9. They manage their money.
Successful people have gotten where they are because they were able to manage their finances well. This means that they invest their money wisely, look for new opportunities and set aside emergency funds. They are more generous and willing to donate to those who need help. Here are 101 ways that I've put together to save money like well-off people. In addition, I've found that my marriage has become 10x better with enough savings in the bank for a year of expenses. That saved us when my last business venture failed.

There is an old saying that luck and preparation always meet opportunity. The most successful people set themselves up for success by preparing all the time. Successful people expect luck will find them, and it usually does.

http://ok.wojublog.com/2015/08/09/its-not-comfortable-but-these-are-some-stupid-things-nigerian-ladies-do-just-to-impress/

You know Almost everyone wants to feel important and also give the impression that they are “big girls and boy”. A lot of women, in a bid to try to impress other people and belong, have done some “foolish” things.

We’ve all been there at some one point or the other in our lives. It’s a position almost every lady has found herself in at one point or the other.

So desperate are we to create a false impression and belong that we go way out of our comfort zone and make a total mess of ourselves.

The truth is that at that moment, we are feeling cool with ourselves, thinking we are having a swell time but later we get to realize, they are not as cool as we thought.

Let’s take a look at some of the “dumb” things ladies do just because they want to create a false impression or they want to belong.

1. Shoepidity (Wearing ridiculously uncomfortable shoes just so you look hot): Have you ever seen some ladies walking awkwardly on the streets with their very high heeled shoes? That is what we call shoepidity. It is not comfortable in any way, you are in pains and you’ve even got blisters but still you insist on wearing it, trying to impress God knows who. Some ladies would buy a shoe that’s not their size and force themselves to wear it just because they want to impress a certain somebody. Ladies, why are you putting yourself in pain because you want to belong? If you don’t have a car and you must wear those heels to an occasion, help yourself by wearing a comfortable flat and carry the heels in your bag till you get to your destination.

2. Taking private drops: A lot of ladies are guilty of this. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying it is wrong to take cabs but when you know you are not buoyant enough, take a public bus. It is very clear that taking public transport is way cheaper but some would rather take a cab even when they are down financially just because they want to create this false impression that they are “big girls”.

3. Buy things they can’t afford: Some ladies walk into a shop and they tell them the price of something which they know is way out of their budget. They still go ahead to buy it, maybe because a cute guy is standing close by or they are with their friends and they don’t want to ‘fall their hands’.

4. Shop at expensive stores: Dear ladies, just because your friend shops at an expensive store does not mean you have to follow suit. You have no idea how she makes her money. You could the same thing your friend bought very expensive at that store for a cheaper price in another store. Stay true to yourself and shop where you can afford.

4. Buying expensive asoebi dress: Nigerians are familiar with the Asoebi trend. Some ladies will do anything just to be among those wearing asoebi even if they have to borrow money. Some ladies actually get hooked to their future husbands during wedding especially when they belong to asoebi ladies. Believing that they might be one of those lucky ladies, some would buy expensive asoebi dresses even when they have no money to pay for it.

5. Starve yourself: Some ladies when they go out with a guy will be forming, “I am not hungry”, even when they are famished. Some would order for a very light meal just so they appear posh and classy. If you and this guy hit it off and you become more, he’s going to one day see you really dig into food, so quit pretending and be you.

There’s no need trying to impress people who don’t even care. People are going to like if they want to, irrespective of what you do. You lose friends by being fake. If you want to relly impress people, do something useful, which will win you more fans rather than engage in dumb behaviours that will hurt you and drain your pockets.

When running a business, it’s not enough to just have a pioneering entrepreneurial mindset. A business model to match it is necessary, as is a culture that facilitates success from the top down.

As a serial entrepreneur and now the CEO of Mitchell Communications Group, I understand the importance of developing a strong company culture. Besides building camaraderie, this sort of culture enables employees to think outside the box, develop innovative ideas to push the company forward and enables personal growth. But it isn't easy.

Instilling this sense of entrepreneurship throughout your company is a fourfold process:

1. Recruit
The first step toward establishing that culture is hiring the right people. While, it’s necessary to have more process-oriented employees who work hard to avoid mistakes, you also need employees focused on driving the business forward. Look for the following when identifying entrepreneurial-minded people: curiosity, an ownership mentality and the ability to take risks.

Of the three, the most important quality is calculated risk taking. Too often, risk takers are thought of as gunslingers who shoot from the hip and ask questions later. In Thinking, Fast and Slow, economist Daniel Kahneman claims there are two ways of thinking. The first is fast, instinctive and emotional. The second is slower, more logical and rational. I want to hire the latter. While speed to market can be critical, I want teammates who are inclined toward making thoughtful, evidence-based decisions. These individuals take smart risks.

2. Incentivize
So you’ve hired the right people. Now, it’s time to get the best out of them.

Early in my career, I worked at an ad agency. At our monthly company meetings, the best ideas from a suggestion box were announced. Fifty dollars went to the employee behind the winning idea. After submitting a few good thoughts every month, I won, and my ideas were implemented. When my colleagues noticed I was regularly winning and gaining traction, it motivated them to get in the game, too.

Schemes with a wide variety of rewards and recognition encourage innovation. At Google, developers are not only rewarded financially, but they’re also given a round of applause from peers when their ideas are presented. We use a social-employee recognition platform that allows colleagues to give shout-outs online. We also highlight innovative thinking at our all-staff "Bright Spots" meetings.

Push employees to think through the whole cycle of a suggestion -- from the initial idea to its end product -- and you’ll be on the right track.

3. Train
Hiring the right people and incentivizing them isn’t enough: You have to train them, too. This means bringing people together and asking, “How can we be better?” Once viable ideas are in place, help your employees understand how to identify those that work. The Design Council’s Double Diamond model is a proven process for bringing ideas to fruition.

Allow employees to ask the right questions and encourage a creative process for mining their best thinking. They’ll help build an entrepreneurial culture and improve your business.

4. Empower
Permit your employees to try and fail. This isn’t easy, as most owners believe they don’t have much margin for failure. But an even greater risk is not innovating at all. Recognizing good ideation allows you to empower employees to experiment, making them more likely to take risks and recognize opportunities.

Entrepreneur and CultureIQ are searching for the top high-performing cultures to be featured on our annual list. Think your company has what it takes? Click here to get started.

Having great company culture is no longer just an option. Today’s workers consider it as much as they consider salary and benefits. In fact, fantastic company culture is almost expected along with other traditional benefits.

While the culture that works for one company might not work for another, you can learn a lot from companies who are doing it right, and get started on company culture hacks of your own.

1. Zappos
Zappos has become almost as well known for its culture as it is for the shoes that it sells online. What does that culture look like?

It starts with a cultural fit interview, which carries half the weight of whether the candidate is hired. New employees are offered $2,000 to quit after the first week of training if they decide the job isn’t for them. Ten core values are instilled in every team member. Employee raises come from workers who pass skills tests and exhibit increased capability, not from office politics. Portions of the budget are dedicated to employee team building and culture promotion.

Great benefits and a workplace that is fun and dedicated to making customers happy all fit in with the Zappos approach to company culture -- when you get the company culture right, great customer service and a great brand will happen on its own.

Takeaway: Zappos hires according to cultural fit first and foremost. It has established what the company culture is, and fitting into that culture is the most important thing managers look for when hiring. This promotes the culture and happy employees, which ultimately leads to happy customers.

Related: The 4 Steps Needed to Instill an Entrepreneurial Mindset Into Your Company Culture

2. Warby Parker
Warby Parker has been making and selling prescription glasses online since 2010. It designs its own glasses, and sells directly to customers, cutting out the middleman and keeping prices low.

Company culture at Warby Parker instigates “culture crushes,” and one reason for that level of success is a team dedicated to culture. That team means that a positive culture is on the forefront, setting up fun lunches, events and programs. The company makes sure that there is always an upcoming event so the entire team has something to look forward to, and it uses methods to make sure the entire team works well together by insisting everyone helps keep break areas clean or sending random employees out to lunch together.

Takeaway: Warby Parker has made company culture deliberate by creating a dedicated team tasked with coming up with events and programs to promote community. Great company culture doesn’t happen on its own.

3. Southwest Airlines
The airline industry is often mocked for grumpy employees and poor customer service, but Southwest Airlines bucks those trends. Customers loyal to Southwest often point to happy and friendly employees who try hard to help.

Southwest isn’t new to the game. It’s been in operation for 43 years. Yet somehow, during all that time, the company has managed to communicate its goals and vision to employees in a way that makes them a part of a unified team. Southwest also gives employees “permission” to go that extra mile to make customers happy, empowering them to do what they need to do to meet that vision.

Takeaway: Employees who are convinced of a larger common goal are people who are excited to be part of a larger purpose.

4. Twitter
Employees of Twitter can’t stop raving about the company’s culture. Rooftop meetings, friendly coworkers and a team-oriented environment in which each person is motivated by the company’s goals have inspired that praise.

Employees of Twitter can also expect free meals at the San Francisco headquarters, along with yoga classes and unlimited vacations for some. These and many other perks are not unheard of in the startup world. But what sets Twitter apart?

Employees can’t stop talking about how they love working with other smart people. Workers rave about being part of a company that is doing something that matters in the world, and there is a sense that no one leaves until the work gets done.

Takeaway: You can’t beat having team members who are pleasant and friendly to each other, and are both good at and love what they are doing. No program, activity or set of rules tops having happy and fulfilled employees who feel that what they are doing matters.

5. Chevron
While oil and gas companies are prime targets for a lot of negative PR and public ire, Chevron employees responded favorably towards the company’s culture. Employees compared Chevron with other similar companies and pointed out “the Chevron way” as being one dedicated to safety, supporting employees and team members looking out for each other.

Chevron shows it cares about employees by providing health and fitness centers on site or through health-club memberships. It offers other health-oriented programs such as massages and personal training. Chevron insists employees take regular breaks. In other words, the company shows it cares about the well-being of employees, and employees know that they are valued.

Takeaway: Your company culture doesn’t have to be ping-pong tables and free beer. Simply providing employee's with a sense of safety and well-being and creating a policy where everyone looks out for each other can easily suffice.

6. SquareSpace
This successful startup is regularly voted as one of the best places to work in New York City. Its company culture is one that is “flat, open and creative.” A flat organization is one where there is no (or very few) levels of management in between staff and executives. This approach is more common among startups, and can be tricky to maintain as a company grows larger, generally requiring groups to form.

SquareSpace also offers robust benefits and perks, including 100 percent coverage of health insurance premiums, flexible vacations, attractive office space, catered meals, stocked kitchens, monthly celebrations, relaxation spaces and periodic guest lecturers. Solid benefits such as these help a culture, but are not the sole instigator of successful culture. Down-to-earth leaders and direct access to management have a great deal of impact.

Takeaway: Employees feel their voices can be heard when they aren’t muffled under layers of management. This level of freedom and empowerment creates confident employees and improves morale.

Related: Design Your Office to Fulfill Employees' Most Basic Needs

7. Google
It would almost seem wrong not to mention Google on a list of companies with great culture. Google has been synonymous with culture for years, and sets the tone for many of the perks and benefits startups are now known for. Free meals, employee trips and parties, financial bonuses, open presentations by high-level executives, gyms, a dog-friendly environment and so on. Googlers are known to be driven, talented and among the best of the best.

As Google has grown and the organization has expanded and spread out, keeping a uniform culture has proven difficult between headquarters and satellite offices, as well as among the different departments within the company. The larger a company becomes, the more that culture has to reinvent itself to accommodate more employees and the need for management.

While Google still gets stellar reviews for pay, perks and advancement, there are also some employees who note growing pains that you’d expect from such a huge company, including the stress associated with a competitive environment. Hiring and expecting the best from employees can easily become a stressor if your culture doesn’t allow for good work-life balance.

Takeaway: Even the best culture needs to revisit itself to meet a growing company’s team. The most successful company culture leads to successful business, and that requires an evolving culture that can grow with it.

8. REI
For outdoor enthusiasts, REI has long been the company to turn to for great gear. Employees of REI, a cooperative where profits benefit its member-owners, also agree that this is a place where greatness happens, even beyond the beloved camping and outdoor products. REI’s mission is to equip both customers and employees for the outdoors, not just to have fun but also in promoting stewardship of the environment.

REI says that its employees give “life to their purpose,” firmly attributing company success to workers. The CEO of REI has acknowledged that employees can get benefits anywhere, but allowing outdoors-oriented employees to immerse themselves in REI culture is what makes it unique. Employees can win equipment through “challenge grants” where they submit a proposal for an outdoor adventure that would be challenging. Regular townhall-style meetings are held where employees can submit questions anonymously to help management understand what’s happening in the company.

Takeaway: When your employees are completely immersed in the same interests as your company, the culture propels itself forward almost on its own. Culture that is owned and propelled by the same people puts value in their voices.

9. Facebook
Just like Google, Facebook is a company that has exploded in growth as well as being synonymous with unique company culture.

Facebook offers, as do many similar companies, lots of food, stock options, open office space, on-site laundry, a focus on teamwork and open communication, a competitive atmosphere that fosters personal growth and learning and great benefits.

Yet, Facebook has the same struggles as similar companies: a highly competitive industry leads to a sometimes stressful and competitive workplace. Additionally, a free and organic organizational structure that worked for the smaller organization is less successful for the larger one.

To meet these challenges, Facebook has created conference rooms, has separate buildings, lots of outdoor roaming space for breaks and has management (even CEO Mark Zuckerberg) working in the open office space alongside other employees. It’s an attempt at a flat organizational culture using the buildings and space itself to promote a sense of equality among the competition.

Takeaway: When your company depends on new hires who excel in a competitive field, your company culture and any associated perks will likely be the tipping point for applicants. You must stand out from other companies vying for attention.

10. Adobe
Adobe is a company that goes out of its way to give employees challenging projects and then provide the trust and support to help them meet those challenges successfully. While it offers benefits and perks like any modern creative company, Adobe's is a culture that avoids micromanaging in favor of trusting employees to do their best.

Adobe products are synonymous with creativity, and only through the avoidance of micromanaging are the people who create those products truly free to create. For example, Adobe doesn’t use ratings to establish employee capabilities, feeling that that inhibits creativity and harms how teams work. Managers take on the role of a coach, more than anything, letting employees set goals and determine how they should be assessed.

Employees are also given stock options so that they know they have both a stake and reward in the company’s success. Continual training and culture that promotes risk taking without fear of penalty are part of Adobe’s open company culture.

Takeaway: Putting trust in your employees goes a long way towards positive company culture, because trust leads to independent employees who help your company grow.

Conclusion
Many of these companies offer similar perks and benefits, but those do not determine the culture completely. The approach taken with how employees are treated and what level of ownership and trust they are given is also a key part of company culture.

One word of caution: focusing on company culture to the exclusion of other workforce considerations (safety, laws, regulations) can lead to abuses or create situations where employees aren’t comfortable. Even the best examples of culture on this list have detractors.

Remember that the best culture makes all employees feel safe and welcome, never excluded or uncomfortable. Focusing on “culture fit” alone makes it difficult to hire and welcome employees who are different than the prevailing culture, even if they’d be an asset and great counterbalance at your company. Your company culture needs adjustment if it causes you to end up with a homogenized team who think and act the same.
