Xiaomi VP Manu Kumar Jain has joined in the teaser campaign for the Xiaomi Mi 10i 5G. He posted a video describing the upcoming phone as an “extension” to the Mi 10, Mi 10T, Mi 10T Pro and even the Mi 10T Lite. That’s quite a family tree.

Anyway, the Mi 10i has been specifically designed for India and uses a brand new camera sensor – a 108MP camera, as seen in the numerous teasers that have come out recently. The full announcement will be on January 5.

You can see the quad camera of the phone in this teaser video. The two labels of note are “108 MP AI camera” and “Built for 5G”. Xiaomi was the first to use a 108 MP sensor, the ISOCELL HMX. However, Jain mentions that this is a new sensor – he could be talking about the HM2, which Samsung unveiled in September (the major difference is that it does 9-in-1 binning instead of 4-in-1 as the HMX).The Xiaomi Mi 10i 5G will use a relatively new chipset, though – the Snapdragon 750G was also unveiled in September and the Mi 10T Lite was the first phone to use it. This explains the complicated family relations mentioned in the beginning.But the Mi 10i isn’t based on the 10T Lite. Clues point to the Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G being used as the base. This means a 6.67” IPS LCD with HDR10 and 120 Hz refresh rate, plus a 4,820 mAh battery with 33W wired fast charging. There could be modifications to that recipe for the India market, but we’ll find that out in less than a week.

Microsoft has released a new preview build of Windows 10 20H1 to users in the Fast ring, and the changelog includes several notable improvements.

First and foremost, the second-generation Windows Subsystem for Linux is getting support for ARM64 devices, which is truly good news especially as Microsoft is expanding at full speed in this direction.

And this isn’t all for WSL2. This new build also updates the Linux kernel to 4.19.67 and introduces a new option to allow unprivileged users to view kernel log. Support for battery and AC adapter passthrough has also been added.

“We’ve also added the ability to set your distribution’s default user using the /etc/wsl.conf file. This release also contains multiple bug fixes, including a long-standing issue for legacy Windows symlinks (for example those in the user profile directory),” Dona Sarkar, chief of the Windows Insider program, said.
"Cortana fine-tuning"

Windows 10 build 18980 also brings more changes for Cortana, as the digital assistant evolves to being offered as a separate app in Windows 10.

“In a future Cortana app update, customers will have the option to use Cortana if they speak a supported language, regardless of their OS display language. The new Cortana app currently supports English (United States)—because Cortana is service backed, we can and will continue to add new languages over the coming months outside the bounds of OS build updates,” Dona Sarkar noted.

Refinements to the Optional Features screen are also part of this release, including options to select multiple entries, search for optional features, and under-the-hood optimizations.

Microsoft has recently confirmed that it’s looking into reports that its most recent Windows 10 cumulative update for version 1903, or the May 2019 Update, might come with an issue breaking down the Start menu.

Furthermore, Microsoft says, it received reports of issues with the desktop search feature after installing Windows 10 cumulative update KB4515384.

This update was published on September 10 as part of this month’s Patch Tuesday rollout.

“Microsoft has received reports that some users are having issues related to the Start menu and Windows Desktop Search,” Microsoft says. “We are presently investigating and will provide an update when more information is available.”

Other specifics aren’t available at this point, but new cumulative updates for Windows 10 should be published later this month with non-security improvements. It’s not yet known at this point if a fix for this bug would make it to this cumulative update.
"Second botched cumulative update"

This is the second cumulative update in a row that causes issues on Windows 10 version 1903, after the company shipped KB4512941 with a bug also breaking down the search feature and causing high CPU usage.

“Microsoft is getting reports that a small number of users may not receive results when using Windows Desktop Search and may see high CPU usage from SearchUI.exe when searching after installing KB4512941. This issue is only encountered on devices in which searching the web from Windows Desktop Search has been disabled,” Microsoft said.

Windows 10 cumulative update KB4515384, which is the one that’s causing the Start menu problems, was supposed to fix this behavior and restore the full functionality of the search feature, but as it turns out, this only happens for the luckiest of users.

It remains to be seen when the bug could get a fix, but for the time being, there’s no workaround to resolve it.

Microsoft has just made Windows 10 May 2019 Update, or version 1903, available for all users who manually check for updates on Windows Update.

Mike Ybarra, Corporate Vice President of Xbox Program management at Microsoft, announced on Twitter that Windows 10 version 1903 can be downloaded by all seekers, which are those users who check for updates manually in the Settings app.

The rollout of Windows 10 May 2019 Update started last month in waves, but Microsoft embraced a more cautious approach in order to reduce the likelihood of issues hitting a substantial number of devices.

While only a small subset of devices received the May update as an automatic rollout served on Windows Update, Microsoft also allowed only a limited number of seekers to download the update.

“We will begin availability for those users on a currently supported version of Windows 10 who seek to update via “Download and install now” (limited to devices with no known compatibility issues). We will also begin the phased rollout using our ML model to intelligently target those devices running Windows 10, version 1803 or prior versions that our data and feedback predict will have the best update experience,” Microsoft said in April when announcing the May update.

Everyone on Windows 10 can now download the May 2019 Update with a manual check for updates in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
"Windows 10 19H2 not dead"

In other Windows news, Brandon LeBlanc, Senior Program Manager at Microsoft on the Windows Insider Program Team, responded to recent concerns regarding Windows 10 19H2, explaining there’s still enough time to test the release due to be finalized in September.

“There will be plenty of time to test 19H2. We get a lot of value out of the Slow ring. You shouldn't worry - this will all play out and we'll communicate the details once we've locked on them. Important not to put artificial timelines on these things,” he said.

Rumor has it that Windows 10 19H2 won’t bring any major new features, but only a bunch of improvements, which means this release won’t be necessarily a new feature update and land more as a service pack.
