https://www.9jamember.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/aregbe.jpg Students of Osun State University under the aegis of Student Joint Campus Committee (SJCC) have threatened to shut down all the campuses of the university should the management of the institution refuse to waive the late registration fees. The Chairman of SJCC, Ohamara Victor Chinedu and General Secretary, Yusuf Muis Oluwakayode told Daily Trust that the students would stage peaceful protest across all the campuses of UNIOSUN on Thursday to demonstrate the seriousness of their demand. The students also wrote separate letters to the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Najeem Salam and the varsity VC Professor Lobode Popoola. In the letters, they demanded waiver of the late registration fees. They also asked the Speaker to intercede for them and prevent the school from imposing the charges. Ohamara and Oluwakayode noted that the payment of N10,000 charge for late registration would be difficult for the students given the current economic hardship in the country and urged the vice chancellor of the university to jettison the idea. The students lamented that the school management closed the school portal and reopened it after much pleading but the management added a sum of N10,000 as penalty for late registration. SJCC said “The economy of this nation is biting harder on our parents. The school management should consider us. Almost everybody is yet to complete their course registrations before the sudden closure of the portal in December, 2016”. “There are fresh students who had barely settled down before the portal was closed in the same month, leaving them unaware of the school system. The entire students found it difficult to believe that the management would take such decision as it was alien to us. We thereby seek the cooperation of the VC to spare N10,000 late registration penalty”. Meanwhile, the VC had expressed worry that the students were in the habit of not paying school fees at the appropriate time and that some of them were indebted to the university to the tune of N2billion In a press briefing earlier, the VC said the situation of the unpaid school fees has become unbearable and that the system might collapse if drastic measures were not put in place to deter the defaulters. He however said the institution would no longer tolerate such habit for any of its students. http://www.9jamember.com.ng/2017/02/16/students-threaten-shutdown-uniosun-campuses-late-registration-charges/ |

The 29-year-old Jamaican legend, competing in his final Olympics, powered over the line in 9.81sec, vanquishing drug-tainted American rival Justin Gatlin who took silver with Andre De Grasse of Canada claiming bronze. Gatlin, who had been booed by the Rio crowd as he was introduced, crossed in 9.89sec with De Grasse just behind in 9.91. Bolt galloped away in celebration after a superb win, basking in the adulation of the stadium and even taking selfies with fans during his lap of honour. He then delighted the fans with his traditional “lightning bolt” pose as reggae blasted out of the stadium sound system. The victory left Bolt standing alone in the 120-year history of sprinting in the modern Olympic games. No other athlete — man or woman — has ever won three consecutive individual Olympic sprint titles. It also leaves Bolt on track to complete an incredible “triple-triple” of clinching 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay titles for a third consecutive Olympics. Bolt, the 2008 and 2012 Olympic champion, had already earned the right to be regarded as the greatest sprinter in the history of athletics after accumulating more golds on the track than anyone else. But the Jamaican’s latest triumph erases any last lingering doubts that he deserves to be ranked alongside the likes of Muhammad Ali, Pele and Michael Jordan as the kind of once-in-a-generation athlete who transcend their sports. READ MORE See 12 Things Rihanna Doesn’t Want You To Know (Photos) Bolt’s win — his 18th gold in Olympic and World Championships since 2008 — averted what might have been a public relations disaster for the drug-tarnished world of track and field. A corruption scandal involving the sport’s former rulers, who were accused of accepting bribes to cover up positive drug tests, and an investigation which alleged an elaborate state-sponsored doping system in Russia have plunged track and field into the worst crisis in its history. A gold medal for Gatlin on Sunday would have made uncomfortable viewing for many — world athletics chief Sebastian Coe among them — who have advocated that serial doping offenders should be banned for life. But those fears were swept away by the smiling, laughing figure of Bolt, for so long the sport’s most charismatic showman. Gatlin, who has served two drug bans during his long career, made a powerful start to lead over the first 50 metres. But as soon as Bolt’s head came around the midpoint the American was in trouble and the defending champion surged home around a metre clear of the field. http://www.naijamember.ng/2016/08/15/breaking-olympics-bolt-makes-history-third-100m-gold/ |
https://www.naijamember.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/logo-1.jpg A lecturer at the Department of Languages and Linguistics of the Osun State University, Ikire Campus, Dr. Wale Ojoniyi, is currently in trouble following the release of a video tape of his alleged sex escapade with a 400 level English student of the institution, Mercy Ikwue. The student, who released the over 30-minute video clip, recorded it in a hotel room. Although some claimed the lecturer raped the student, real sexual intercourse was not captured in the video. There was also no attempt by the man in the video to coerce the student to cooperate with him. In a petition written to Naijamember, some students of the university claimed that Ojoniyi was instrumental to the suspension of the female student, after she was allegedly caught for examination malpractices. On her return to the university after the one academic session rustication, the petition claimed the lecturer mounted pressure on the student for an amorous affair but the lady resisted him. It was further learnt that the lady confided in some persons, who advised her to set a trap for Ojoniyi by agreeing to his love advances. She eventually went to the agreed hotel room and met him. In the video, which was also made available to our correspondent, the female student set up a laptop directly opposite the bed and pretended to be watching the ‘Things Fall Apart’ film on it but she was recording the sexual activity. Although there was no act of sexual intercourse captured in the video, the man in the video was seen stark naked and caressing the student occasionally. In the video, Ikwue was seen throwing her blue top on the bed from an angle she knew the camera could not cover. She also ensured that the camera lense did not capture her when she removed her trousers. She wore her top throughout the 34-minute duration of the show and used the bedsheet as a wrapper. The man came to the bed naked oblivious of the trap set for him and dangled his manhood throughout the show. The audio quality of the video clip was poor but some of the conversations can still be heard. The female student said at one point, “Give me my transport. I am not asking for any other money, just give me my transport fare. “Why is your thing (private part) dropping like this, haven’t you done it in recent time. “Before I went on suspension, why didn’t you plead on my behalf? You knew about it joo.” Ojoniyi when asked by our correspondent if he was aware of the video said he had heard of it. He said, “I also heard of the video. It is being investigated.” Asked if he believed that the video was a handiwork of those who might want to bring him down, he said, “ People can do anything, but I cannot be brought down.” http://www.naijamember.ng/2016/08/11/wtf-uniosun-lecturer-sex-scandal-video/ |

Over 19 States are yet to settle the WAEC’s registration fees. The Head of the Council, Dr. Charles Eguridu said this at a briefing in Lagos. Eguridu said many states in Nigeria paid registration fees of candidates, particularly in their public schools, for the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination. He said this had afforded many indigent students the opportunity to sit for the examinations as well as relieved many poor parents of the financial burden. The official said, however, that such obviously good gesture had come at a price to the council. He said: “As I speak to you now, we are cash-strapped as a result of the delay in offsetting the registration fees owed the council by some states. “A total of 19 states are indebted to the council to the tune of over N4 billion in respect of entry fees for state government-sponsored candidates for the May/June 2015 WASSCE. “Some states are also still indebted to WAEC in respect of registration fees for the 2014 May/June diet of the same examination. “We have written to the affected state governments without response and the poor response of these debtor states is threatening the smooth operations of the council. “We, therefore, want to publicly plead with the affected states to offset the registration fees of their candidates for the May/June 2015 WASSCE, as we cannot guarantee releasing their results alongside others in a few weeks’ time.” http://www.naijamember.ng/2016/07/30/waec-states-indebted-to-waec-may-not-get-2015-wassce-results/ |
https://www.naijamember.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Abdulmumin-Jibrin-3.jpg Eniola Akinkuotu, Ade Adesomoju and Adelani Adepegba The immediate past Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin, on Friday stormed the headquarters of the Department of State Services, Abuja, to seek the arrest of the Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara for his role in the alleged budget padding. In a tweet on his official Twitter handle, Jibrin said he was at the DSS headquarters as of 7.30pm on Friday to call for the arrest of Dogara and other members involved in the padding. He wrote, “Just arrived SSS HQ. The journey to get Speaker Dogara and other members of the corrupt group has begun!” Jibrin has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission regarding the alleged padding. Sources said the EFCC had acknowledged receipt of the petition. A source at the EFCC said, “We have just received a petition from Jibrin. We will definitely work on it.” This is just as the Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), said the EFCC would investigate lawmakers involved in the alleged budget padding. Sagay told Saturday PUNCH in an interview on Friday that it was possible that the level of corruption in the National Assembly was much higher than most Nigerians knew. He said the recent revelations and allegations were just a tip of the iceberg. Sagay said, “The whole saga reveals the degree of corruption in the country is mind-boggling. There is no exception in any sector of Nigeria. It is a pandemic disease that has turned the country rotten from top to bottom. So, it is very disturbing. “As for investigation, the matter will be taken to the EFCC and the EFCC will take it up. I don’t think the whole House should be investigated. We will have to start from somewhere and that is, if the House leadership or Jibrin takes it to the EFCC and the whole thing will start to unravel. So, we should brace ourselves for more shocks. I don’t know whether Nigeria can take more shocks, but we should brace ourselves.” The senior advocate said he believed that budget padding had been going on for years. Sagay said the only reason why the fraud was being exposed was because of the friction between Jibrin and key members of the House. He added, “What I suspect is that this is not the first time. It has been going on for a long time, but it looks as if it is because things fell apart between them that everyone is exposing one another. Budget padding was going on as usual when they were getting along so, I don’t think it is anything new. “It is just that it was too audacious this time when Jibrin allegedly took away N60bn meant for Calabar-Lagos Railway and simply split it among projects in his own constituency and the constituencies of his friends. They thought they would get away with it, but fate caught up with them. So, the law will take its course.” Sagay said budget padding was an economic and financial crime as it had to do with the inflation of figures in the budget and the diversion of money meant for the generality of Nigerians. He said, “It is fraud, stealing and is a criminal offence. It is a financial and economic crime and the EFCC will look into it.” When contacted Special Adviser to the Attorney General of Federation and the Minister of Justice on Media and Publicity, Mr. Slihu Isah, said he was not aware of any directive issued by his boss for the investigation of the budget padding scam. Another source said, while the minister had shown interest in the case, he had yet to decide on exact step to take. A national newspaper (not The PUNCH) had on Friday reported that the AGF had set up a panel to investigate allegations of padding in the National Assembly and ministries. According to the report, the panel is headed by an Assistant Inspector-General of Police http://www.naijamember.ng/2016/07/30/budget-padding-jibrin-storms-dss-office-seeks-dogaras-arrest/ |
