Purgatory is not necessarily a 'place' but a 'state'. For u to understand how purgatory came about and what it means, confer 1 Jn 5:16-17. It is clear there that there is sin that leads to death (mortal sin) and the sin that does not lead to death (venial sin). Those who die in 'the sin that leads to death' surely are going to hell but what of one that died 'in the sin that does not lead to death'? Becuase all wrong doing is sin and the latter died in 'sin', he or she passes through a state of 'purging' as no soul with stain of sin can see God. Remember, God is a God of Justice.
