The Book of Revelation is a book of dreams and visions. John said this in the first few verses of Chapter 1. So, it would not make any sense to apply literal interpretation to any of its dream/vision content unless you have another reference to work with. In much the same way you should not apply literal interpretation to things that you see in your dream unless you have another reference to help, so also you shouldn't go interpreting the content of John's Revelations without reference.
