425 people died in the shipwreck. Only 153 passengers, mostly women and children survived. In addition to the huge loss of life, the loss of $8 million worth of gold at that time contributed to the financial Panic of 1857. 2 Likes

On 12th September, 1857, the SS Central America, also known as the "the ship of gold", sank off the coast of the US state of South Carolina, along with riches from the California Gold Rush. It was a category 2 hurricane that sealed the fate for 425 people returning to the US east coast. The ship was carrying 578 passengers and crew. 425 died, 153 survived, mostly women and children. They went down with an estimated 21 tonnes of gold bars, coins and nuggets from prospectors who had struck rich on the west coast. Salvaged from the ship's wreckage in 2014 were daguerreotypes, the first successful commercial form of photography, a one-off picture held on a metal plate and ambrotypes, a type of glass plate photography. The sidewheel steamship was recovered by a rogue captain and a salvage company between the 1980s and 2014. Many of the treasures, however, have been hidden away due to years of litigation with insurance companies over who held rightful claim. Dubbed the 'Ship of Gold,' an estimated value of the gold alone is $100-$150 million. The 280-foot ship was traveling from Panama to New York carrying tons of gold. Zi’Ariel, A'Miyah and Temari went missing from their Atlanta home, about 200 miles east of Fort Worth, around 10pm on Friday, prompting a multi-agency search for the girls. A family friend had been watching the trio and their other siblings while their mother, Shommaonique Oliver, was at work. The babysitter called 911 to report their disappearance. Officials received reports that the girls were found in a pond near Highway 77 around 2am Saturday. Police centered their search around the pond after a pair of shoes, bike and other items of clothing were found scattered near and in the water. 'We located items of clothing around a pond and in a pond,' Texas Game Warden Shawn Hervey told KSLA Saturday. 'So, we centered the search around that small body of water, and with the use of divers we were able to recover three victims at approximately 2am.' Investigators have not reached any conclusions about their deaths and the bodies have been sent for autopsies. Three young sisters were found dead after vanishing from their Texas home while by babysat by a family friend. Zi’Ariel Robinson Oliver, 9, A'Miyah Hughes, 8, and Te'Mari Robinson Oliver, 5, were reported missing from their small town residence Friday night. A dive team pulled their bodies from a private pond on a neighboring property early Saturday morning.
