Holy/Maundy Thursday is one of the greatest days in the life of Christ and the life of the Church. The word “maundy” is a shortened form of the Latin word “ mandatum” which means mandate or command. This tells us the importance of Christ’s mandate as we will see in the write-up.
The three-fold significance of this day are: the Blessing of the Oils, the commemoration of the Institution of the Sacred Priesthood and the Institution of the Holy Eucharist.
The morning mass of the day is the mass of the Chrism (Chrism Mass) which is celebrated by a Bishop. During the mass, the Sacred Oils will be blessed and all the Priests present will renew their priestly vows and obedience to their Bishop. The evening mass is the Holy/Maundy Thursday mass. Here, we are being reminded of the Priesthood as instituted by Christ; in other words, as a call to service (as Christ washed the feet of his disciples) and as having the duty of administering the various sacraments (Christ broke the bread and told his disciples to do the same in remembrance of him), and we are reminded of the Eucharist as instituted by Christ, which is his true presence.
Blessing of the Oils
During the Chrism mass, the bishop blesses three oils; viz, the oil of Catechumens ( oleum catechumenorum ), the oil of the sick/infirm ( oleum infirmorum ) and holy chrism ( sacrum charisma ). These oils have their specific and well-defined purpose.
The Oil of Catechumens is used to anoint catechumens immediately before the sacrament of baptism. The oil of the sick/infirm is used to confer the sacrament of anointing of the sick. The oil of chrism is administered in sacraments that inprint indelible mark on the catechumen’s soul, such as baptism, confirmation and holy orders. It is also used in the dedication of a church.
Gift of the Sacred Priesthood
On the night before his passion and death on the cross, Jesus instituted and called his disciples to join in the ministry of service through the sacred priesthood. He also, directly and indirectly, mandated them to administer the sacraments to the people who believe.
Baptism: Christ said “ Unless a man is born of water and of the spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God ” (C.f Jn 3:5). Knowing fully well of the consequences, what did he do? He gave a command to his disciples, “ Go therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost ” (C.f Matt 28:19).
Confirmation: Christ promises to send the Holy Spirit to us: “ it is better for you that i go away, because if i do not go, the Helper will not come to you. But if i do go away, then i will send him to you.” (C.f Jn 16:7), “ and when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will be filled with power, and you will be
witnesses for me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth ” (C.f Acts 1:.
Holy Eucharist : Christ instituted the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist while on table with his disciples when he took the bread and said “ this is my body, which is given for you“, and also the wine, “ this cup is God’s new covenant sealed with my blood, which is poured out for you “. At the end of each, he gives his disciples a command “ do this in memory of me ” (C.f Lk 22:19-20).
Penance : Christ knew the importance of the confession of sins in the life of Christians that was why he instituted this sacrament when he breathed on his disciples and said to them, “ Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive people’s sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven. ” Hence, this sacrament involves three steps: the penitent’s contrition (otherwise called, the penitent sorrow for sins), the actual confession to a priest who acts in the person of Christ and who absolves you of your sins, and then he gives you penance or restitution for your sins.
Anointing of the Sick : When Jesus sent out the twelve disciples for the work of evangelization, he equipped them with the necessary tools and they did what he taught them, “ so they went out and preached that people should turn away from their sins. They drove out many demons, and rubbed olive oil on many sick people and healed them. ” (C.f Mk 6:12-13).
Holy Orders: Jesus commissioned his disciples to celebrate the sacraments in memory of him, “ do this in memory of me ” (C.f Lk 22:19-20), and he also called them to be his witnesses, “ and you will be
witnesses for me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth ” (C.f Acts 1:.
Matrimony: This sacrament is actually administered by the couples to be wedded. The priest only acts as a representative and a witness of the Church. One who is there to make sure that God’s word in Genesis 2:24 is upheld, “ that is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united with his wife, and they become one” .
Institution of the Holy Eucharist
This same day, we remember Jesus’ act of love and charity as he offers us his body and his blood to eat and drink. Remember, after feeding the 5,000 Jesus told the people who came to look for him to perform more miracle so that their stomach will sing praises to him, “ I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. ” He then goes further to say, “ Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. ” (c.f Jn 6: 25-59)
This word is being fulfilled in today’s celebration, as we commemorate Christ’s institution of the Holy Eucharist on the eve before he was crucified. While on table with his disciples he took the bread and said “ this is my body, which is given for you “, and also the wine, “ this cup is God’s new covenant sealed with my blood, which is poured out for you“. At the end of each, he gives his disciples a command “ do this in memory of me ” (C.f Lk 22:19-20). And today, we are doing it in his memory.
After the celebration, we will follow him to the garden and keep watch by way of our adoration. Are we going to sleep off spiritually and physically or are we going to stay awake with our Lord.

LIVERPOOL -- Jurgen Klopp believes Mohamed Salah is "on the way" to reaching the same levels as Lionel Messi after the Egyptian scored four goals for Liverpool in Saturday's win against Watford.
Salah netted his first ever hat-trick for Liverpool as he took his goalscoring tally for the season to 36 in all competitions.
The 25-year-old has scored 28 league goals so far this term -- which is more than any other player across Europe's top five leagues.
When asked whether it was appropriate to talk about Messi and Salah in the same conversation as two of the best players in the world, Klopp told a news conference: "Yeah, I think Mo is on the way. That's good.
"I don't think Mo wants or anybody wants to be compared with Lionel Messi. He [Messi] is the one who is doing what he is doing for what feels like 20 years or so. The last player I know that had the same influence on a team performance was Diego Maradona -- another Argentina guy.
"Yes, Mo is on a fantastic way -- that's for sure. But how it always in life, if you have the skills then you have to show it constantly.
"His consistency is very good for us; he helps us a lot. The boys love playing together with him [and] he loves playing together with them, so it's good. You need always in a game somebody who brings the ball over the line."
Salah scored two goals in each half of Liverpool's 5-0 victory over at Anfield on the weekend, which takes him ahead of Harry Kane in the Premier League's Golden Boot race.
Those goals mean Salah, who joined Liverpool from Roma in the summer for what was then a club-record fee, has now scored more goals than any other Liverpool player in their first season at the club.
"If the question is what I think about that then I think that's quite exceptional," Klopp said.
"[It was] another good performance in a very difficult game, in a very impressive manner, coping and dealing with the conditions tonight."
Meanwhile, Salah thanked his Liverpool teammates for their help in him reaching such record-breaking goalscoring figures.
"I have to thank every one of my teammates, without them I couldn't have reached these numbers," he told BT Sport postmatch.
"Each game we try to get the three points, that's the most important thing, but every game I want to score, I want to help the team."

Due to lack of water supply in the University of Nigeria Nsukka, girls in the hostels came out emerse when someone shouted that the tap was rushing. They started dragging for space in the queue because rumours had it that the water was going to rush minutes later. The girls waited for hours but were still unable to fetch water. One of the student was saying: No water palava. Please help us girls biko.

On sunday, 21st of this month students of University of Nigeria staying in hostels(Nkuruman, Alvan, Eni Njoku and Post graduate hostel) close to the second gate had a peaceful riot. Speaking with one of the students who refused to disclose his identity, he said the above hostels have been having electrical issues since this year and the school authorities were yet to come to their aid. They had to depend only on the school generator which runs from 7pm to 10pm daily otherwise they will be without power supply even when our naija Nepa bring the light. Inaddition to that there is currently no water running in those hostels which makes students move outside in search of water. He further urged the school authorities to come to their aid. Most of the students had another peaceful riot the next day and said they will be forced to move to the Vc's quaters if the school authorities refuse to take action.

After winning the audience award for best experimental film at the Black Star Film Festival in Philadelphia, ‘A Hotel Called Memory‘ is set to premiere in Lagos, Nigeria on Sunday, November 19th, 2017.
Directed by Akin Omotoso, produced by Ego Boyo and written by Branwen Okpako, ‘A Hotel Called Memory’ is a fresh take on African cinema, steadily blazing the trail to redefining filmmaking in the industry.
The film features Nigerian and South African favorites Nse Ikpe-Etim, Kemi ‘Lala’ Akindoju, Mmabatho Montsho, Nomzamo Mbatha and Abdi Hussein.

The Director, Akin Omotoso, a Nigerian actor, writer and director best known for his films Man on ground, Tell me sweet something and his multi-award winning film Vaya, shared that “we ought to do something that had not been done before and we hope people can see and appreciate that when they see this film”.
The producer, Ego Boyo, an actor, and film producer of Violated, Keeping Faith, To Live Again, 30 Days and best known for her role in Checkmate is excited to share this experimental project with everyone. “Working on non-conventional and challenging projects always produces amazing results. The combination of the director, the actors and the production of this film has created cinema magic and we cannot wait for everyone to experience this”.
Apart from redefining the film industry in Nigeria, the film seeks to challenge acting styles and pushed its stars to new depths. Nse Ikpe-Etim said ‘this truly was unlike anything I have worked on before, and brought out skills I didn’t know I had. It was an educative and rewarding experience’.

Ahead of his November 25 union to Public Relations expert, Nabila Fash, singer, Oritsefemi Ekele, has given reasons why he would not starve his wife-to-be of sex.
In an interview with Premium Times, the ‘Double Wahala’ crooner emphasized on the importance of men sexually satisfying their wives.

He said; “I don’t want lack of sex to be a problem in my marriage. Anytime my wife wants to have sex, I would always give it to her, at any time. Sex should not be the problem. Money could cause problems but I won’t allow sex be the problem”.

He then advised men;

Get close to your wife and try to understand when she needs it. As a wife, you also need to know when your husband needs to have sex. It pains me when I hear that lack of sex is the cause of marital crisis. I would rather hear a woman say that she wants her husband to work harder.”


Talking about his forthcoming wedding, Oritsefemi, who had been celebrating each month of living with his lover, talked about the challenges faced by couples.

He said, “Marriage is something that you have to be very diplomatic about. You have to be very careful and know what you are doing because it has its ups and downs. No marriage is perfect. Some people think that marriage is all about money, but it is not.
“It takes God and the couple to understand each other. Some people talk about cheating in marriage and that is why I sang in my song, ‘Igbeyawo,’ that women should not starve their husband of sex. If you do that, it would bring problems in your home.”

Emem Isong-Misodi’s Royal Arts Academy and Rok Studios latest movie ,Body Language, to hit the cinema soon. ‘Body Language’, a product of this partnership is released in cinemas this Friday. A thriller about a stripper living a double lie, is set to hit the cinemas from Friday October 20.

The highly entertaining movie tells the story of a cold-hearted, ruthless stripper.
A total stranger, who has been hunting for the killers of his daughter, discovers the secret of this stripper, who lives beyond her means as a captivating sexuality as a serial killer, and has killed several ladies and her supposed boyfriend, whom she refers to as a space-filler, and who leaves the law enforcement agencies in disarray.
This is the crux of the movie that was screened to great applause during a private show, last Thursday.

Catalan referendum: Activists occupy school ahead of vote
More than 160 schools in Catalonia have been occupied by activists trying to keep them open ahead of the region's banned independence referendum, Spain's central government says.
Police visited 1,300 of the 2,315 schools in Catalonia designated as polling stations, finding 163 occupied.
Tens of thousands of people are expected to attempt to vote on Sunday.
As a result, Spanish authorities are now stepping up their attempts to stop the ballot taking place.
Authorities in Madrid have sent thousands of police to the region to stop the referendum - declared illegal by Spain's constitutional court. They are being assisted by the Catalan regional police force, the Mossos d'Esquadra.
Police have now occupied the regional government's telecommunications centre.
Police have also been ordered to clear schools occupied by activists aiming to ensure the buildings can be used for voting.
Many of those inside the schools are parents and their children, who remained in the buildings after the end of lessons on Friday. Some told Reuters news agency that police had told them they could stay as long as they were not doing anything connected to Sunda's vote.
Laia, a 41-year-old sociologist who is staying in a Barcelona school this evening, said the police had visited four times.
"They read us out the part of the court order that says no activities related to the preparation of the banned referendum are allowed," she told Reuters.
What is the basis for the vote?
Catalonia, a wealthy region of 7.5 million people in north-eastern Spain, has its own language and culture.
It also has a high degree of autonomy, but is not recognised as a separate nation under the Spanish constitution.
Pressure for a vote on self-determination has grown over the past five years as austerity has hit the Spanish economy and people hard.
But Spanish unionists argue Catalonia already enjoys broad autonomy within Spain, along with other regions like the Basque Country and Galicia.
Will the vote go ahead?
Officers have been visiting the locations due to be used as polling stations, as well as seizing items such as ballot papers, while prosecutors have ordered the closure of websites linked to the vote and the arrest of officials organising the referendum.
But Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont told Reuters that the referendum would go ahead.
"Everything is prepared at the more than 2,000 voting points so they have ballot boxes and voting slips, and have everything people need to express their opinion," he said.
