Governor-elect Diri Douye receives Certificate of Return from INEC.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has presented the Certificate of Return to Senator Douye Diri.

The electoral commission in a briefing at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja declared the PDP candidate winner of the November 16 governorship election.

INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu told journalists that Diri was declared the winner after top officials met on Friday morning to review the results of the election, without the votes of the APC which have been voided by the court

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress(APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has declared candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senator Douye Diri cannot be sworn in on Friday as Bayelsa Governor because he did not meet the requirements of the Supreme Court.

Oshiomhole pointed out the judgement of the Supreme Court said the certificate of return should be issued to the candidate, who has the required spread in the election aside from David Lyon.



He said there was no candidate in the election that met the requirement apart from Lyon, adding that the implication is that from Friday Bayelsa will be without a Governor.

The National Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja erupted in jubilation on Thursday afternoon following the sack of All Progressives Congress candidate, David Lyon, as governor-elect of Bayelsa State by the Supreme Court.

Members of the PDP could not control their joy at the secretariat when news of the apex court’s ruling filtered in especially after the judges named the party’s candidate, Diri Duoye, as rightful winner of the exercise.

The court also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to withdraw the certificate of return given to Lyon and issue a fresh one to the PDP candidate.

Zamfara State Governor, Bello Muhammad Mattawale, on Wednesday signed into law a bill stopping the payment of jumbo allowances to former governors, their Deputies, ex-Speakers and other past political office holders in the state. Daily Trust reports that the Zamfara state House of Assembly had yesterday outrightly repealed the law that allows jumbo payment of pension and other allowances to former governors, their deputies, Speakers and their deputies in the state. The abolishment of the law came barely 72 hours after a letter written by a former governor, Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar, to Zamfara State Government demanding for the payment of his upkeep allowances running into millions of Naira leaked into the public. The letter generated heated debates within and outside the state. According to the letter, the monthly upkeep allowances for an ex-governor in the state is N10million and backed by law which was amended and assented to on the 23rd of Marching, 2019.
