PoliticsDangote Set To Commence Crude Oil Production by FarahAideed(op): 2:16pm On Oct 31, 2025
The Dangote Oil Refinery, which initially struggled with securing crude locally, is set to begin producing its own crude before the year runs out, as reported by S&P Global.

DON'T MISS THIS: Dangote creates an opening for investors with plans to sell 10% of his refinery shares

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), right now, supplies Dangote with 14 cargoes of crude oil, or sources, valued at the equivalent of US dollars, under a "crude for naira" swap deal.

In exchange, Dangote receives an equal amount of gasoline and gasoil in local currency, as seen in the Punch.

“Dangote’s upstream assets in the Niger Delta, Oil Mining Lease 71 and 72, could soon provide another supply injection, with production expected to start this month and reach up to 40,000 b/d,” the report said.

Dangote’s plan to produce crude
Dangote had initially set Q4 of 2024 as the timeline to begin crude oil production.

The decision to commence oil exploration followed two months of crude supply dispute between Dangote and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

The Dangote Refinery’s plan to begin producing its own crude is set to start before the end of the year.

The Dangote Refinery is set to start crude oil production by the end of the year.
Initially relying on local crude supply from NNPC, Dangote faced challenges regarding payment terms and moved to international sourcing.
Upcoming production from Oil Mining Leases 71 and 72 in the Niger Delta could reach up to 40,000 barrels per day.
The refinery has imported significant quantities of crude due to disputes, despite Nigeria being Africa’s largest oil producer.

At the time, the organization had insisted on selling crude to the Dangote Refinery in foreign currency, making it more expensive than importing.

This forced Dangote to source crude from other markets, including the United States, Brazil, and even African countries like Equatorial Guinea and Algeria, among others.

Sourcing crude from other markets despite Nigeria being the largest oil producer on the continent has been the baffling reality of Nigeria’s oil sector.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Nigeria spent ₦1.19 trillion on crude oil imports in the first quarter of 2025, making it the country’s third most imported commodity during the period

Findings at the time showed that the Dangote Refinery was projected to import 17.65 million barrels of crude oil between April and July 2025.

As of March 2025, the refinery had received over three million barrels of U.S. crude in a single month.

The back and forth between the Dangote Refinery and Nigerian authorities prompted Dangote to begin exploring the option of producing its own crude.

In July, Devakumar Edwin, vice president of Dangote Industries, noted that the refinery will be fully reliant on Nigerian crude by the end of 2025.

In the same month, the NNPC reaffirmed its commitment to supplying crude oil to the Dangote Refinery based strictly on commercial and market-driven terms.

PoliticsUS Defends Soyinka Visa Revocation by FarahAideed(op): 10:34am On Oct 31, 2025
The US Consulate in Lagos made this clarification on Thursday in response to an inquiry from The PUNCH regarding the revocation of the visa of Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka.

In an email response to our correspondent on Thursday, the Consulate noted that it could not discuss the details of the particular visa for confidentiality reasons.

“Under U.S. law, visa records are generally confidential. We will not discuss the details of this individual visa case,” the Public Diplomacy Officer, US Department of State, US Consulate General, Lagos, Julia McKay, said.

McKay added that visas could be revoked at any time at the discretion of the US government, noting that they are a privilege.

“Visas are a privilege, not a right. Every country, including the United States, can determine who enters its borders. Visas may be revoked at any time, at the discretion of the U.S. government, whenever circumstances warrant,” she said in an email responding to The PUNCH.

Soyinka had, during a media parley on Tuesday in Lagos, announced the revocation of his B1/B2 visa by the US Embassy.

The 91-year-old world-acclaimed writer told journalists at Kongi’s Harvest, Freedom Park, that he should not be expected in the US by anyone, as he currently has no visa.

Addressing the media at the parley titled “Unending Saga: Idi Amin in Whiteface, ” Soyinka said the notice of revocation was communicated to him by the US Consulate General in Lagos, in a letter dated October 23, 2025.

“It is necessary for me to hold this press conference so that people in the United States who are expecting me for this event or that event do not waste their time.

I have no visa; I am banned, obviously, from the United States. And if you want to see me, you know where to find me,” the author, playwright, and poet told journalists at the upper chamber of the art gallery.

Soyinka, who is a staunch critic of US President Donald Trump, stressed that he did not know the basis for the revocation of his visa.

While pondering over the revocation of his visa, the renowned writer said he could not recall any offence by committed by him that could have warranted the decision to revoke his visa.

“I’ve started looking back—have I ever misbehaved towards the United States of America? Do I have a history? Have I been convicted? Have I gone against the law anywhere?” he wondered.

Just admit it, you were bettered, there is no shame in losing, giving you’ve been taught you are not even as smart as a door knob. Maybe you actually learned something today. The number major problem of Nigeria is rapid population growth and insecurity. Most of people who called themselves Nigerians now are probably from Chad or Niger which shows the lack of border control. Maybe we can talk about how to improve things rather than comparing with a country of 5 million with little to no contributions on the global stage

I think at this point you are just clowning and purposely being disingenuous to get more engagement on your Anti-Nigeria propaganda. This country has a lot of problems that need to be fixed but with people of your kind who are good at highlighting the problems with no idea of how to bring about solutions, it’s really sad to see. So just to dispel your attempt at trying to be smart, comparing per person (or per 100k people) is correct — that’s how economists measure fairness in cross-country comparisons. But using updated GDP figures, Nigeria’s economy is stronger both in total and per person. Liberia’s $4.3 billion is only about 1% of Nigeria’s GDP,
while its population is about 2.3% of Nigeria’s. Here are recent figures for nominal GDP per capita for Nigeria and Liberia:
• Nigeria: about US$ 806.9 per person (2024)
• Liberia: about US$ 670.0 per person (2024)
Source: World bank data.

I presented with concrete stat and you say that I am clowning yet you are the one living in delusions..

Our GDP per Capita just 10 years ago was 10 times that of Liberia , in 2014 Liberia GDP per Capita was $381 while ours was above $3000 today they have grown to ,670 while you have reduced to 806 and yet you think you are better off than them ? If not for Dangote refinery our GDP per Capita will be below 600 dollars today ..
