Business / Retired Police Officer Wins N10m First Bank Draws by fatai2: 10:22am On Jan 16, 2011
Dear All, I find this worth sharing with U.

A retired Police officer, Audu Aliya, from Taraba state, has been presented with N10 million having emerged the star winner of the First Bank Golden Anniversary Promo draw. The draw was conducted and certified by a renowned accounting firm, KPMG, in Lagos a few days ago.
Aliya operates a savings account with Ganye-Adamawa branch of the bank.

Apart from Aliya, two other lucky winners included Bolorunduro Emmanuel Olukayode, a staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), with an account at the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Lagos branch of the bank and Kayin Peter Asiugbon, a lecturer at the Lagos State Polytechnic, who also emerged winners of a Kia Picanto car each. In all, a total of 215 lucky customers of the bank smiled home with various household and cash prizes at the draw.

The promo is coming on the heels of a recently concluded Big Splash promo which ended in March this year where 12 customers from the six geo-political zones of the bank drove home 12 brand new Toyota Corolla cars, nine customers each from the market facing directorates of the bank won three star prizes ranging from a Toyota Prado jeep (2009 A/T model), a Kia Sportage SUV, a Honda City car and six consolation prizes.

To participate in the Golden Promo, customers are required to deposit a minimum of N10,000 for 30 days every month from June, 2010, to qualify for the monthly and quarterly draws. To qualify for the Golden Anniversary draw, customers are expected to save a minimum of N50,000 for 30 days within each month up to the month of the Golden Anniversary draw. Additional opportunity is given to customers who save N50,000 every month to also participate in the monthly and quarterly draws.

Romance / I’m Too Young To Have A Boyfriend – Miss Nigeria by fatai2: 12:50am On Oct 17, 2010
Nineteen-year-old Oluwadamilola Agbajor is the reigning Miss Nigeria, the beauty pageant resucitated by the former Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria, Nike Oshinowo-Soleye. Agbajor shares with Ada Onyema her journey to stardom

How did you find the screening and training sessions?

Well, it was fine and challenging. We were asked a series of questions and I was very happy that I made it to the finals.

You were in London then; how did you come about the pageant?

Yes, I was holidaying in London when I heard about it. My friends in Lagos sent me a message and the address of the website and I registered for it.

Has being a beauty queen on your mind for a while?

Being a beauty queen wasn‘t my dream, but Miss Nigeria is a different pageant that I really wanted to be a part of.

What do you think really stood you out among those that contested the pageant?

I can‘t really pin-point a particular thing that stood me out because all the girls were brilliant, beautiful and smart. I think it was just God‘s favour.

How do you feel being Miss Nigeria?

I feel very honoured being Miss Nigeria because I never thought I could make it to the finals. It was a very competitive pageant; it was God‘s favour that I eventually won. Now, I have to be treated like a queen. Everywhere I go, I get lots of attention which I never got as an ordinary person. It feels so good being a queen.

As a student, how would you combine your studies and your duties as a beauty queen?

Well, I’m going to multi-task by going to school during my tenure.

Aren‘t you foreseeing any challenge?

So far there has been no challenges because school has not resumed, it has been fun; moreover the Miss Nigeria team will help me and make it work.

As Miss Nigeria, what legacy would you like to leave for others ?

At the end of my tenure, I would like to be remembered as a young girl that came in, took the crown and made a difference. I would like to be remembered as a young girl that helped people of her age to know that they can actually acheive their dreams; whatever they set their minds to do can be acheived if only they are focused and determined.

What was the first thing that came to your mind when you were being crowned?

I was very happy. I was full of praises and thanksgiving that God really wanted me to be Miss Nigeria; full of praises and thanksgiving to God. I was very humbled and honoured to be crowned Miss Nigeria because I never thought I could ever make it.

Many people registered for the pageant. Were you threatened by a particular constant?

They were all great because they were all beautiful and smart. It was hard to say this is the person that was going to win; everybody was a threat.

Did your parents support your participation in the beauty pageant, even as the only child ?

Yes, my parents and every member of my family gave me their full support because there was a voting session and they were all there for me.

What would you miss being Miss Nigeria?

I will just miss going to places unnoticed; the celebrity part of it is that I will miss my privacy

How would you utilise your tenure?

I hope to visit places, meet people and learn different cultures.

We have had cases of people abandoning their old friends just because they are celebrities. Would you still keep your old relationships?

Yes, of course! I think my real friends are those who stood by me when I was a nobody. Now that I am Miss Nigeria, they will remain my friends, though there is room to make new friends.

We have had beauty queens embarking on some pet projects. Do you have plans of engaging in one?

Yes, my pet project is going to be building youth centres; to keep children and youths off the streets. It is all about engaging them adequately in activities. There will be different sections in the centres to enable them exhibit their God-given skills and talents like singing, acting and whatever area they are good at. The youth centres will help them explore those areas to help them achieve their goals in life and become better citizens.

How do you intend to achieve all that?

With the help of the Miss Nigeria team and God.

What is your kind of style?

For me, it is comfort first, then simplicity. I dont like being overly dramatic. I love wearing heels and if Im not wearing heels, I‘m on totally flat.

Did anyone in particular motivate you to participate in the beauty pageant?

I consider Agbani Darego as my role model because she was very young when she won the Miss World crown. That taught me a great lesson that no matter my age, I could actually do what she did. I was 11 years old when she won the Miss World pageant and I was very happy and honoured to see her the day I was crowned.

Do you have any beauty routine to keep fit?

Well at my age, this is very natural; I don‘t have any beauty routine.

You have a boyfriend?

No, I don‘t.

Why?

One of the reasons for such is that considering my age, I think I‘m too young for that and also I really don‘t need one now. I still have more time to make the right choices.

Certainly as a beauty queen, it is expected that you will have advances from the opposite sex. How do you intend to cope with them?

I have learnt to turn them down nicely whenever they make their intentions known by telling them that I‘m not ready for a relationship now

When do you hope to get married?

I have not really given it a thought because I think I have a lot of time ahead of me. I don‘t have any particular age in mind but at the right time when the right person comes; things will fall into place.

Politics / Ministerial Screening:drusman Skipped, Aliyu Dropped by fatai2: 6:57am On Mar 31, 2010
The screening of ministerial nominees and their likely conformation by the Senate today encountered a hitch yesterday when two of the nominees were apparently dropped due to high-stakes political games between the Presidency and some power brokers.
Former Minister of National Planning Dr. Shamsudeen Usman, who was billed for screening by the Senate yesterday, had his name skipped by Senate President David Mark and sources later told Daily Trust that he had been dropped from the list. However, Usman’s special assistant Malam Ujjudud Sheriff said last night that they expect the former minister to be screened this morning. Similarly, Daily Trust learnt that the ministerial nominee from Taraba State, Alhaji Umaru Aliyu, had been dropped in favour of Dr. Obadiah Ando. Also yesterday, Acting President Goodluck Jonathan nominated former Minister of State Health Dr. Aliyu Idi Hong to serve again as minister from Adamawa State.

Dr. Shamsudeen Usman was the only renominated minister who was not screened yesterday, even though Senate President Mark announced on Monday that the returning ministers would be screened first. Reliable sources at the Senate later told Daily Trust that Dr. Usman, the nominee from Kano State, was dropped from the list by the Acting President in response to protest from the camp of former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, which nominated Kwankwaso’s former deputy governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje as a replacement. Their argument was that Usman is a technocrat and not a politician and is not in touch with the PDP structure in Kano state.

Daily Trust also learnt last night that the ministerial nominee from Taraba State, Alhaji Aliyu Umar, was dropped at the insistence of Lt General T.Y. Danjuma, chairman of Jonathan’s Presidential Advisory Council. Umar, a director in the National Boundary Commission who hails from Jalingo Local Government area of Taraba State, was nominated by Governor Danbaba Suntai, but Danjuma and his supporters said he is from the northern zone of Taraba state, and not from the Southern zone where former Science and Technology minister Dr. Hassan Bako Zaku hails from.

Aliyu has been replaced by Dr. Obadiah Ando, a former PDP governorship aspirant from the Southern part of Taraba state. Ando sought to fly the PDP’s flag in the 2007 governorship polls but lost at the primaries.

Although no official explanation was given for Umar’s replacement, a source said Danjuma was unhappy over Governor Suntai’s nomination of Umar after promising him that he would field Danjuma’s preferred candidate. The source told Daily Trust that following the spate of protests, Governor Suntai was forced to make retreat by replacing Umar with the new nominee, Obadiah Ando who is Danjuma’s a political godson.

Chief Press Secretary to Governor Suntai Malam Hassan Mijinyawa, when contacted last night, said that there were “issues raised over” Umar’s nomination. He promised to call back after consulting with his boss, but did not do so.

Meanwhile, the Senate will today confirm new ministers after concluding the screening of all 39 nominees so far sent to it by Acting President Goodluck Jonathan, Senate spokesman Senator Simon Ayogu Eze (PDP, Enugu North) told Daily Trust last night.

Twenty six nominees have so far been screened while the remaining 13 nominees are to face Senate today, after which consideration and confirmation or rejection of each of the nominees will be done.

Senate screened 23 nominees yesterday, including nephew of ailing President Umaru Musa Yar’adua, Alhaji Murtala Yar’adua and nine reappointed ministers in the recently dissolved cabinet.

Before commencement of the screening exercise, Senate went into an hour’s closed door session where it was agreed that only three senators are allowed to put questions to each nominee in order to fast track the process.

Daily Trust gathered that the Acting President had through Senate President David Mark pleaded with senators to fast track the exercise to enable him swear-in the new ministers tomorrow.

Speaking when he appeared before the Senate, former minister of state for petroleum Odein Ajumogobia said deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector has become inevitable in view of global economic realities.

He said, “Today we are exporting crude oil in its primary state and import refined products when the value has been added. Therefore we are exporting jobs. I think that is the most important aspect of the deregulation argument. Unless we deregulate, we will not be able to attract the investment necessary. Since we started talking of deregulation and since I became in charge at the end of last year, at DPR, we had numerous applications for refineries because they believe that government is going to deregulate. I think that is the greatest justification apart from the fact that we can’t afford it, government can’t afford to spend N687 billion as we spent in 2009.

As long as new refineries are not built, we will find that the subsidy will keep increasing because our consumption keeps increasing and our capacity will decrease. The next will be that one day we will be faced with a situation where we don’t have anything to spend.”

While answering questions put to him by senators, Murtala Yar’adua said he is bringing youthful agility to the cabinet, saying “The energy of youth is very important. Around the world, a lot of industrialists and senior people running conglomerates are actually our age mates. A lot of our friends and colleagues are in private industry and I believe that I can draw a lot of experience and advice and new ways of doing old things. There is nothing wrong with the way things have been done; I think energy is what we need.”

He commended the ongoing banking reforms saying “I think we have been very lucky with the emergence of the new CBN Governor. I believe the situation was caught quite early, I believe if the CBN hadn’t come to intervene we would have been in a worse, situation. The global meltdown has affected us; there were a lot of bad investments by the executive managers of the banks. The boards and regulators had failed the shareholders, basically. The AMC which the legislature has passed is going to be very helpful. This will release a lot funds to the banks.”

On his part, former minister of state power, Arc. Nuhu Somo Wya (Kaduna) explained the factors that worked against attainment of 6000 megawatts of electricity promised by the Yar’adua administration last year.

“I am not trying to put blame to anybody; I am just trying to say that we did rehabilitate our plants and got up to 5200mw available generation capacity as at the end of December, last year. But we had stranded facility of 1500 megawatts due to inadequacy of gas. This inadequacy of gas cannot be blamed on a single source. We know the challenges we went through, they are challenges of security, vandalism, challenges of inadequate funding contributed to some of the issues that militated against our achievement of 6000 megawatts,” Somo Wya said.

Other nominees that faced the Senate yesterday include former national planning minister, Senator Mohammed Sanusi Daggash who apologised to his former colleagues for the frosty relationship between his ministry and the Senate when he was in the cabinet.

Former minister of state for finance, Aderemi Babalola (Oyo), former minister of transport, Ibrahim Isa Bio (Kwara), former minister of mines and steel, Diezani Allison-Madueke (Bayelsa), former minister of state for Commerce and Industry, Humphrey Abbah, former minister of youths development, Senator Akinlabi Olasunkanmi and former minister of environment, John Ogar Odey were among those screened yesterday.
Jobs/Vacancies / ‘jobless Nigerians To Earn N25,000 Monthly’ by fatai2: 9:33am On Mar 29, 2010
Morning All,

The Executive Secretary of NIPC Engineer Mustafa Bello said the Commission has proposed to the Federal Government the setting up of a Social Insurance Security Commission to address the problem of unemployment in the country.

The new commission will be similar to the National Health Insurance and Pension Fund schemes.

He explained that the proposed Commission by their projections will lead to the creation of about 517,000 jobs. He said the employees will be attached to various organizations and agencies relevant to their field of specialisations.

The proposed Commission will pay the employees N25, 000 salaries pending when they are absorbed by the establishments.

He said: “If you read law, there are so many law firms we can send you to and the Social Insurance Commission will fund the law firm and if the law firm found you good and absorbed you then you disengage from the Commission.”

The proposed Commission which had been accepted by the presidency has been passed to the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity for further work.

Engineer Bello said the same model have been accepted at the NIPC where they created about 50 jobs under a unit that was formally called retainer but now executive trainee.

“I wish every agency of government can do that. We train them and many have gotten employment because of the exposure.

“This is a model we thought we can apply in the country so that people can be employed immediately they leave the University. The impact of it on the economy is that you are creating consumer capacity,” he said.

The exact number of unemployed in the country is not known.

Spokesman of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) Barrister Nnamdi Asomugha said it is difficult to pin down the percentage of unemployed in the country because as many people are not employed many others are equally under-employed. The rough estimate of unemployed youth in Nigerian may be between 60 and 70 percent.
