What a brilliant start for Manchester City and has Yaya Toure opened the scoring after nine minutes as his shot went through the legs of David Silva before Craig Dawson’s deflection took the ball past Boaz Myhill.

Two first-half goals from Yaya Toure and a header from Vincent Kompany helped Manchester City seal a comfortable 3-0 victory over West Brom on Monday evening.


The 32-year-old midfielder added his second 15 minutes later as he met Wilfried Bony’s lay-off with a neatly curled effort into the corner of the net.

Kompany wrapped up the victory in the second half with a fine header at the near post from Silva’s corner.



City’s £49 million summer signing Raheem Sterling was handed his official debut, while Sergio Aguero made a late appearance from the bench.

West Brom, meanwhile, handed debuts to Rickie Lambert, James McClean and James Chester.



City began the match on the front foot and were quickly rewarded for their spell of pressure.

Having received the ball from a Jesus Navas cutback on the edge of West Brom’s box, Toure scuffed an effort that trickled past Myhill following deflections from Silva and Dawson.

Toure’s second was the result of a well-worked move by City as the Ivorian received Bony’s perfectly weighted lay-off on the edge of the area and placed his effort beyond the reach of Myhill.

Another Dawson deflection saw Bony’s shot drift wide shortly after the half-hour mark, while Sterling missed a golden opportunity to mark his debut with a goal as he failed to beat Myhill after being sent through one on one.

Victory was sealed for City in the 59th minute when Kompany escaped Lescott to head Silva’s corner beyond Myhill from a tight angle.

Petr Cech endured a wretched Premier League debut for Arsenal as West Ham ended an eight-year wait for a win over their London rivals with a shock 2-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium.

Cech was billed as the player who could make the dissimilarity for Arsene Wenger's side as they endeavor to be crowned champions for the first time in 12 years this season, but Petr Cech was blameworthy for both West Ham goals on Sunday.

There was no way back for the home side in their first top-flight game of the season, as West Ham claimed their first victory over Arsenal in 16 attempts stretching back to 2007.

While Cech was left red-faced, Slaven Bilic eminent an astonishing three points in his first Premier League game in charge, just three days after he was criticized for fielding a weakened side as West Ham crashed out of the Europa League with a defeat against Astra.

West Ham midfielder Reece Oxford became the second-youngster player after Jose Baxter to start a Premier League game at the age of 16, with new signings Payet and Angelo Ogbonna also making their top-flight debuts.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Arsenal's match-winner against Chelsea in the Community Shield last weekend, let fly with a rasping volley that flashed over the crossbar 10 minutes in.

Oxlade-Chamberlain then surged down the right at full tilt and delivered a cross beyond the far post into the path of Santi Cazorla, but his cushioned volley landed on the roof of the net.

Arsenal were in the ascendancy as Aaron Ramsey's strike from just outside the penalty area looped up and struck the crossbar after deflecting off Aaron Cresswell just after the half-hour mark.

It was West Ham who were in front three minutes before half-time, though, as the usually commanding Cech had a moment to forget.

Cech came out to try and punch clear a Payet free-kick from the right, but Kouyate beat him to it and hit the back of an empty Arsenal net with a towering header.

Olivier Giroud spun and fired into the side-netting and then forced an impressive stop from Adrian as Arsenal strived for an equaliser at the start of the second half.

But the home side's task became even greater 12 minutes after the break, when Zarate turned sharply and unleashed a long-range strike that beat Cech at his near post.

Wenger sent on Sanchez after 67 minutes and teenager Oxford was given a great ovation by the travelling fans when he was replaced by Kevin Nolan 12 minutes from time.

Cazorla's long-range drive was kept out by Adrian and Giroud shot high and wide as Arsenal looked short of ideas and in need of additional firepower.

It was a case of 14th time lucky for Arsene Wenger on Sunday, with the Frenchman finally getting the better of Jose Mourinho as Arsenal beat Chelsea 1-0 to win the Community Shield.

Wenger had famously failed to defeat Mourinho in 13 previous meetings, but Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's stunning first-half strike finally broke that duck at Wembley.

Both sides were missing their top scorers from last season, but Chelsea felt the absence of the hamstrung Diego Costa more keenly than Arsenal did that of the rested Alexis Sanchez.

Petr Cech, so often Chelsea's savior throughout his glittering decade at Stamford Bridge before his switch across London in June, was rarely troubled in Arsenal's goal as Mourinho's men looked blunt up top without Costa.

Eden Hazard was unusually quiet for the Premier League champion, while new signing Radamel Falcao - introduced by Mourinho at halftime - struggled to make an impact.

Mourinho will certainly be praying that Costa recovers in time for next weekend's Premier League opener against Swansea City.

By contrast, Oxlade-Chamberlain was excellent throughout for Arsenal, while Theo Walcott - handed a starting spot up front - and Mesut Ozil also impressed as Wenger's men deservedly retained the Community Shield.

Chelsea weathered early pressure and former Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas had tentative appeals for a penalty rejected by referee Anthony Taylor in the ninth minute.

It was the FA Cup holder which took the lead midway through the half - and did so in some style through Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The England winger collected Walcott's pass, cut inside Cesar Azpilicueta and rifled an unstoppable left-footed shot into Thibaut Courtois' far top corner.

Chelsea responded well and should have been level nine minutes before the break, but Ramires somehow contrived to nod Loic Remy's arched cross from the left over Cech's crossbar from six yards.

The Brazilian's miss would have proven even more costly, had Branislav Ivanovic not bailed him out with a terrific goal-saving clearance when Aaron Ramsey looked certain to head Oxlade-Chamberlain's cross past a stranded Courtois on the stroke of halftime.

Mourinho turned to Falcao at the break in an attempt to sharpen his side's cutting edge, but it was two of Chelsea's stars from last season who created the side's best chance of the second half on the hour.

Fabregas picked out Hazard in the inside-right channel, but the off-color Belgian could only blaze his shot over the bar from 10 yards.

Cech then proved his worth with a relatively comfortable save from Chelsea substitute Oscar's free kick, and Olivier Giroud could - maybe should - have doubled Arsenal's advantage in the 68th minute when he fired over from close range.

Chelsea continued to press in the search for an equalizer, but with Costa absent in body - and Hazard seemingly absent in mind - Mourinho's proud record against Wenger never looked like being maintained.

Chelsea win another pre-season friendly on penalties, beating Barcelona 4-2 in the shootout after an entertaining 2-2 draw in Washington

That was fun, wasn’t it? Great opening 45 minutes, with Eden Hazard at the heart of Chelsea’s best moments, but Barcelona really stepped it up in the second period, and scored two good goals. Jordi Masip didn’t cover himself in glory for the second Chelsea goal, but I think 2-2 was probably fair, even if Barca dominated after the break.

Good shootout for Chelsea, too: Masip didn’t get near any of them.

Arsenal clinched the Emirates Cup after Theo Walcott scored in a 1-0 victory over Wolfsburg.

The Gunners ensured they topped the table in the pre-season competition as Walcott - reportedly close to agreeing a new deal at the club - proved the match-winner at the Emirates Stadium.

On his first Arsenal start, youngster Jeff Reine-Adelaide marked an impressive display with an expert assist for Walcott's opener shortly after the interval.

Arsene Wenger's side hammered Ligue 1 opponents Lyon 6-0 on Saturday but there was to be no such rout against Dieter Hecking's well-drilled DFB-Pokal champions.

Making his home debut, Petr Cech was made to work for a clean sheet as Arsenal made it two wins from two ahead of Sunday's Community Shield clash with Chelsea at Wembley.

Kevin De Bruyne - named German player of the year on Sunday - threatened down the left early on but Cech was on hand to collect the Belgian's delivery.

Close-season signing Cech will have been concerned as former Arsenal man Nicklas Bendtner just failed to make contact with a dangerous De Bruyne delivery from the right.

The Czech's opposite number Diego Benaglio was called on to deny Walcott soon after but it was the Bundesliga side who continued to threaten more frequently - De Bruyne showing why he is a reported target for Manchester City.

With chances largely at a premium in a goalless first half, Timm Klose shanked an effort over the crossbar for the visitors while Mesut Ozil's side-footed effort rolled wide of the far post following a slick passing move.

Arsenal had their breakthrough five minutes into the second half when Reine-Adelaide offered a glimpse of his potential - threading a ball for Walcott to calmly finish past Benaglio.

The largely impressive De Bruyne then ballooned an effort over, having skipped inside Mikel Arteta, before Ricardo Rodriguez saw a long-range strike easily saved by Cech.

The former Chelsea man was tested again by a fierce drive from midfielder Josuha Guilavogui as Wolfsburg piled on the pressure.

It was to no avail, however, Wenger's men topping the standings by three points from Villarreal ahead of the all-London curtain-raiser at Wembley in a week's time.

Chelsea beat Paris Saint-Germain 6-5 on penalties with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois thumping home the winning spot kick after a 1-1 friendly draw in North Carolina.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic opened the scoring for Laurent Blanc’s side. The striker pounced after Jean-Kevin Augustin’s shot hit the bar, sweeping home the rebound past Asmir Begovic to give his side the lead.

The Blues, however, were not to be denied with Victor Moses grabbing the equaliser 20 minutes into the second half. Cesc Fabregas was the creator lofting a superb ball to the winger who volleyed home in style.

Louis van Gaal's side picked up another pre-season win with David de Gea featuring before the Dutchman changed his entire starting XI mid-way through the second half Manchester United made it three wins from three in the International Champions Cup by beating European champions Barcelona 3-1 in California on Saturday.
Wayne Rooney, Jesse Lingard and Adnan Januzaj struck the decisive goals for Louis van Gaal's side in the Santa Clara heat, putting them top of the table in the friendly competition.

Rooney's well-placed header after eight minutes put United in front, and only the right arm of Marc-Andre ter Stegen stopped Ashley Young doubling their advantage.

Luis Suarez was denied an equaliser on the hour by the offside flag, and United rubbed salt in the Spanish champions' wounds when substitute Lingard doubled United's lead two minutes after coming on.

Rafinha was able to pull one back for the Catalan giants late on, but the Premier League side had the last word when Januzaj quickly added a third before the final whistle.

Barca could have twice been ahead inside the opening five minutes as Suarez saw a free-kick thud against the post, and reported Real Madrid target David de Gea - starting his first game in pre-season - denied Sergi Roberto.

Despite their tentative start, United found themselves ahead when England captain Rooney headed home Young's corner after shrugging off the attentions of Adriano.

Young went close to doubling United's lead after 28 minutes, but his effort from the edge of the penalty area was superbly kept out by extended arm of Ter Stegen.

Moments later the Barca goal was under siege again, but resolute defending ensured Young, Rooney and Juan Mata were all kept at bay.

Having led a charmed life at the start of the half, United's goal was again under threat as half-time approached, with Suarez seeing an effort clip the post with De Gea beaten.

The Catalan giants continued to press after the break, and they thought they were level on the hour through dangerman Suarez.

A neat one-two with substitute Pedro, who has been linked with United, left the Uruguayan one-on-one with De Gea, he slid his shot beyond the goalkeeper but was denied an equaliser by the assistant referee's flag.

Barca's disappointment was amplified further four minutes later as Lingard – one of 11 United substitutes introduced after 63 minutes – converted a low Tyler Blackett cross from the left.

There was still time for Luis Enrique's treble winners to be frustrated by the woodwork one last time as substitute Munir El Haddadi saw a late head crash against the United post.

Rafinha finally breached the United defence in the closing minutes with a crisp left-foot volley, before Januzaj restored United's two-goal advantage by turning and finishing clinically in stoppage time as Barca were caught out at the back.

United have one match remaining in their participation in the International Champions Cup – against Paris Saint-Germain – while Barca face Chelsea and Fiorentina.

A blistering first half display saw Arsenal score four first half goals as they swept Lyon aside in a 6-0 win in the Emirates Cup.

Olivier Giroud opened the scoring, diverting a Mesut Ozil cross beyond Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes before the Frenchman turned provider for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Youngster Alex Iwobi added a third, completing a well-worked team goal, before the impressive Aaron Ramsey latched on to an Ozil pass to finish from close range.

Ozil added a fifth after the break, thumping a low strike beyond Lopes and into the bottom corner, and Santi Cazorla rounded off the scoring with a free kick late on.

With a point awarded for every goal, Arsenal now top the group with nine, ahead of Villarreal, who beat Worlfsburg 2-1 earlier on Saturday.

Lyon created the first opening of the game when Alexandre Lacazette's delightful flick played in Clinton N'Jie, but Emiliano Martinez was out quickly to make a low save.

Clement Grenier hobbled off with what looked like a hip injury in the 24th minute, and Arsenal piled the misery on Lyon as the floodgates opened.

Giroud was the first to find the net when he headed Ozil's free-kick into the top left-hand corner, and the Frenchman then turned provider to set Oxlade-Chamberlain clear, the England man coolly slotting past Lopes.

Iwobi - nephew of former Nigeria star Jay-Jay Okocha - made it 3-0 when he swept home Ramsey's throughball to finish a fine Arsenal move.

The 19-year-old had another goal ruled out for offside shortly after, but Arsenal stretched their lead further in the 38th minute when Ozil's cross from the left was poked in by Ramsey at the near post.

N'Jie fired a rare Lyon chance wide after the restart, while at the other end Giroud swept a volley wide from Kieran Gibbs' cross.

A fifth did arrive just after the hour, though, with more eye-catching football from Arsenal culminating in Ozildrilling into the bottom right-hand corner from the edge of the penalty area.

With the match sewn up, Wenger made several changes and it was substitute Cazorla who made it 6-0 with a low left-footed free-kick into the bottom right-hand corner.

There was almost time for a seventh as Chuba Akpom lashed a shot against the left-hand post in the closing stages.

Manchester City were comprehensively beaten 4-1 by Real Madrid in an entertaining International Champions Cup encounter in Melbourne.

Some superb, attractive attacking play gave Madrid a two-goal lead within the space of four minutes midway through the first half as Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo struck past Joe Hart in front of a record crowd of 99,382 – the largest attendance for a football match at the MCG.

Pepe then headed home unmarked from a corner late in the first half before Yaya Toure got one back for Manuel Pellegrini’s men with a penalty in stoppage time just before the break.


City could not push further against Madrid, however, with Denis Cheryshev burying a fourth goal for the Spaniards when he met Isco’s cross in the 73rd minute.

Fabian Delph, who signed from Aston Villa for £8 million earlier in July, made his City debut but lasted just 18 minutes before being stretchered off, appearing to have to injured his left thigh as he tackled Luka Modric from behind.

City manager Manuel Pellegrini named a central-defensive pairing with a combined age of 36 and Cameron Humphreys and Jason Denayer’s lack of first-team experience saw Madrid’s stellar front three of Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Benzema thrive in the first half.

Madrid coach Rafael Benitez started the likes of Toni Kroos and Modric alongside Ronaldo and Co. in close to his best XI, while Manuel Pellegrini included David Silva, Raheem Sterling and Samir Nasri.


Toure and Ramos provided an early scare for both managers when they collided nastily but both recovered.

Benzema opened the scoring with an impressive hooked volley over his shoulder from Bale’s cross in the 21st minute and Ronaldo made it 2-0 four minutes later from Toni Kroos’ long ball.

It got worse for City too, as Pepe found space in the area to head a corner past Joe Hart just before half-time, although a dubious penalty given against Sergio Ramos allowed Toure to make it 3-1 at the break.

A sharp one-two between Isco and Ronaldo saw the ball in City’s net again early in the second period but the latter was offside in the build-up, while Raphael Varane headed wide when left free on the hour mark.

But Real eventually got the fourth goal that their dominance deserved when Isco teed up Cheryshev for a tap-in.

Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil found the net in a commanding performance from the FA Cup holders, for whom former Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech enjoyed a solid debut outing – despite being beaten late on by Ross Barkley’s excellent finish.

Wenger’s side looked the more accomplished from the outset and took the lead midway through the first half when Walcott and Cazorla linked for the England man to score.

A frantic start to the second half saw a host of chances go begging, with Ozil glancing a header wide, Luke Garbutt forcing Cech into a full-length save, and the lively Walcott side-footing narrowly wide of the far post.

Cazorla was more precise, though, cutting onto his left foot and finding the bottom corner from the edge of the box just before the hour mark.
