jedisco:A 'ridonkulous' amount of money. Interesting that this is not the only thing being bequeathed to the next generation and the least concerning - personally I think there is something else. For sure, these type of people will not complain about high property prices, after all the Bank of Mummy and Daddy is the home gift that keeps on giving. Anyway you look at this, African immigrants need to band together and form strong communities that help each other whilst eschewing immediate gratification. The panacea for levelling this field and having an advantage is working smart and doubly hard. |
GraciousWords:How about school rankings for provinces like NB, MB, SK etc? Thanks. |
GraciousWords:Gracious words, GraciousWords! The bolded is under rated in today's world. Parents are the first teacher/life coach of the child and there should be no situation in which we are too busy or outsource our responsibility to another entity. |
BornToSucced:- Can you get in touch with churches in the area? - Also start checking out airbnbs and rental adverts in the area. - Look for Nigerian groups/resident associations. |
jedisco:I will come back to the importance of college education as a success factor and how tricky it may be for both first gen and second gen immigrants, especially getting one that guarantees middle class income in Canada. |
jedisco:Yes, they are definitely right-leaning - not a fan and will probably never be one. Their solution for improving the fortunes of the African-American (AA) community sound simple - stay married and get a job. But a closer look reveals they may actually have a point as shown by the screen shot below. The married AA family is closest in terms of earning to the 'folks at the top of the pyramid'. These are labor earning stats so there is sufficient reason to believe they are valid. The limitations of this data include how old it is (2016) and generalizability/extent to which it can be applied to other A communities. Interesting. https://www.stlouisfed.org/publications/regional-economist/second-quarter-2019/earnings-gap-marital-status-race-gender

This is what happens when we let prejudice/bias in through the door, it becomes local. First, it will be 'others' then it will be 'inhouse'. A thread about how to make the community of Nigerians living in Canada stronger has turned to this! |
orjohn24:- Where is your proof that majority of Nigerian - Canadians often face significant challenges? Share the data please. - I thought it is implicit in migration that most people are fleeing one form of challenge or the other. So should we begrudge people of the thought that their life in Canada is a step-up on their previous life? It is their life, their thought.... Life will always have its challenges, being 6ft under presents none. - Next time, try and engage in creative gestation and be original. Using AI to generate content in support of discrimination is unbecoming. The people who came up with AI were busy working to provide solutions to people's problems not engrossed with bias.
|
RodgersAkpafu:- There are no assumptions here. I have attached proof that your antagonism and racial slurs against a whole people/nation is borne out of scorn due to being unable to 'get in'. By the way, your hope is to remove hatred and scorn from your mind. - The problem with people like you is that they think life is all about dichotomous outcomes. Because I refuse to frolic in the mud with you and call people derogatory names, it means I am shilling on behalf of those people. It pays to stop seeing things in black or white only.
|
RodgersAkpafu:1) Slapper. I do not play in the 'mud' so I would not know what those nasty experiences are. You should try flying one of these days. It is civil up there and people do not call others derogatory names. 2) Let's do the basics. You are 'unhappy' with a group of people because you feel they are gaming the Canadian immigration system. The reason you are unhappy has to do with the fact that you have tried to and probably are still trying to move to Canada but age is counting against you and this is not obviated by education attainment. 3) It's a new year. Another birthday and your score reduces by multiple points. Instead of talking to people about what you can do to boost your score, you are here picking fights. What is funny is that there are folks in Canada hailing your racist comments oblivious to the fact that they have more to lose - a case of the Judas goat leading the naive and simple to the slaughter. 4) I expect you to take a moment to think about the solution to your problem. You can explore learning French , PNP , Atlantic Immigration etc. Reposition your mind away from all these gripes and start acting! |
olalekan9320:You have spoken well, Chief. “If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?” ― Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago |
jedisco:Some POVs. .... 1) The orange-haired one is a clown. I will not dignify him and his adherents with even mentioning his name. But let's not be scornful, so we will oxymoron-ize him as a crafty clown! 2) The hot mic comments (I do not even believe it was a true hot mic. JT is no clown but he's crafty - remember he and Macron are the only leader of a G7 nation that survived COVID. These embers are dying but they can burn) by Trudeau yesterday means the orange-haired one's motive matches his comments. But his action is having the opposite effect, Canadians are not rolling out the red carpet to welcome 'America'. Now Canadians are unified (?) against his 51st state comments. 3) His 51st state comments and the threat of tariffs are mutually inclusive. Stay with me, it will get 'gooder'. 4) The position of the official opposition in politics means that they will break out in paroxysms of schadenfreude if something bad happens. This is what my people will call - Jakinidodo. Something bad happens when tariffs are levied against the country (Yes, the removal of interprovincial barriers to trade means that shortfall from tariffs can be offset to an extent). 5) Notice how the tone of PP changed when there was just the lone threat of tariff and when it was the double barreled threat of tariff + 51st state comments - he was suddenly advising the government and dialing down on the vitriol. After all, as long as it is projected in the media that the tariff problem is averted, then JT shines. The Liberal stocks soar with the increasing anti-American sentiments. PP's egungun will be careful now, this is 190km/hr highway. 6) The moment anything comes up that ties PP (including dual citizenship - see Andrew Scheer) or the Cons to 'looking forward' or 'wanting' the tariffs to happen so the whole economy can come crashing down and they get to point fingers at JT/Liberals . Wahala don happen for them Cons. Remember polling experts are being cautious about PP's chances of forming a majority government with the emergence of MC (look away now CF) as the front runner for the Liberal party flag bearer. Also, PP needs majority because he may not have allies. Yes, they can form a minority government with BQ but Liberal stocks are rising in Quebec again to the extent that it is even matching that of BQ. 7) Expect a lot of jinks and feigns in the incoming weeks/months. |
angrybutsane:I know someone with Arts(?) background in Nigeria who is in the final year of a BSN program in Canada (Saskatchewan precisely). She has 2 kids less than 5 years old and had her second whilst registered in this program! You can do it, Sister! Here is my little bit.... 1) Research, research. This is a no brainer. What is their fees/tuition like? Experiential learning opportunities? What AES accommodation do they have? This is important especially if you have kid(s) to drop at the daycare at 8am and lecture starts at 8am. If you are registered with AES, they can record or make other arrangements for you. Compare multiple LPN programs if there are multiple institutions offering it in your area. This may not pertain to you but looking at out-of-province/city LPN programs is also something some people may be willing to explore. 2) Money! Money answereth all things. If it is a thing, money will most probably make it all easy. How will you finance this career pivot? Student loan +/- grant? Some provinces allow both to not be mutually exclusive now. Some also charge interest after you have completed the program whilst some do not. How about some part time job? As a student caregiver, you can register with alto (https://findalto.com/careers). There is a lot of flexibility in being able to choose jobs. 3)Support system. Look for friends registered in the program who share the-same objective, background etc. You should not have to look too far. If it were courses like Vet Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy - e fit be only 'you' but LPN, you will have the luxury of being around lots of folks. 4) As you start the program, remember you are bringing experience and perspective from multiple continents. No gree for anyone o and make sure 'you know your stuff'! 5) Lastly, I know you have already been divinely inspired on the choice of LPN so this may be for someone else. How about a Bachelor of Education since we are no longer in a place where the reward of teachers is in heaven? They should be able to transfer some credits from previous degree which will shorten the 4-year BEd program. I have attached the pay grid for teachers in Saskatchewan below, other provinces' are similar +/- a few thousands. With a freshly minted BEd, it is class 4 level 1 and each year of teaching adds another level. If you have a BEd+M.Ed, it is Class 6 and with 9 years experience it is ~6 figures. For some people, it is not much and for others, it is the dawn of a new era. This collective agreement is obsolete though since it's 2years old, there is a freshly minted one in arbitration and it is definitely better. This is my perspective with the assumptions that the recipient is a parent and a non temporary resident.

jedisco:I am glad you homed in on the excerpt above! You see that bolded, it is laden with meaning. The system does not understand us. They are giving western interpretations to African problems and that will always exacerbate the issue. Even the doctors may not understand African ailments! That was an excerpt from a black history month poster in a top tier Canadian university. Look at the extent of that oversimplification, the nerve! We need to get into the system and start being reckoned with - social work, doctor, pharmacy, police officer etc. We need more of our folks going into the mix, that is one of the most effective way to advance our community. |
SIRTee15:Oh yes, I can't tell you what to discuss but I can add my own point of view so that an outsider or new entrant looking through this forum will not think we are all trapped in the quicksand of bigotry. And I am not that type of 'reasonable citizen' that is bothered by isolated incidents of looting, neither is it my job to worry about such even if it is widespread. As you were now. |
jedisco:I am actually surprised that this is what it has come to on this thread. There are a lot of things going on in the immigrant community in this country that require solutions. And yet folks are here regurgitating shopworn shibboleths gleaned from somewhere else. This is how bigotry starts oo! The African immigrant community has a lot of work to do. We cannot afford to be bogged down by all these base talks about another tribe, nationality etc. We have couples resorting to fisticuffs because of child care benefit. In 2024, for a good half of the year the sermon and bible study was all about how a husband and a wife can live together in love and harmony in the church I attend. How both can share domestic chores etc. Just that! Not Jesus Christ is coming soon. The spate of divorce and separation has forced the clergy to go back to basics. There are teachers in the public and catholic school system who are encountering extreme difficulties with kids from our community. They do not listen to instructions. When the parents are called, they either do not respond or become recalcitrant. Some kids form gangs and beat up the white kids, yes they do that. As a matter of fact, they are saying black kids are now being represented in the Canadian penitentiary system (In 2020, Black youth made up 29% of the Black population in the Criminal Justice System). https://www.yorku.ca/dighr/project/retooling-black-anxiety/#:~:text=Representation%20of%20Black%20youths%20in,in%20racially%20inequal%20setting12. Can the typical African immigrant really afford these things? The truth is that in most cases, when people start 'talking smack' about others, they are either malcontents or just plain falling short of their expectations for themselves. The people cashing out big from the burgeoning population are not complaining or slinging mud. The Doctors with full roster that are not accepting more patients, the folks who have stocks in Loblaws (people go sha chop food), the banks (immigrants go sha have bank accounts) and even the new immigrants excelling in their fields. Last month I met someone who was earning NGN30K as a teacher with 10 years experience, they came in last year and already have a contract with a remuneration of upwards of CAD5K per month! You won't find these people complaining about people hopping on 3 appendages to catch a bus! Yes, there are people experiencing difficulties getting employment etc. What are we going to do about that? Complain about Trudeau? About other people? Or look at ways we can go about it and thereby enrich our community? |
SIRTee15:Hopefully, you refer to the mentality of Calgarians and not a specific tribe or nationality. |
@LordAdam16, RodgersAkpafu, Jedisco and any one willing to contribute. So we have established that there is a deficit of talent in our community! What do we do to remedy this? It is not enough for us to describe a malaise, we can also try to proffer solution(s). You never know who will be reading this - now or in the future. We diagnose, prognosticate and also offer therapy - clear ones and in simple language. We have all heard the toll of the death knell of affirmative action, which as nebulous as it seem to some, is still something and has offered a pathway to a better life for many. And so it may behoove us to gestate or come up with a more bespoke alternative. RodgersAkpafu spoke about a cultural shift. Can we get into the nitty gritty of this? LordAdam16, I will take a couple of hours one of these days to look through that reddit thread. That looks loaded to the brim. Please provide more insight(s)? Jedisco, please shoot! Thank you. |
I think we need to be careful with the opinions we express here. For the sake of winning brownie points in a discussion, we may not engage in giving free rein to our biases and personal experiences, which do not create a strict hypothesis about other people. We have to do better. My people will say pounded yam consumed 20 years back can still singe one's palm or even tummy. The opinion expressed these past few pages could actually lead to some people putting their employers in a difficult position keeping them as employees. Secondly, we have to know that there are people wanting to migrate and are scrolling through these pages. We have deprived them of having their unique experiences (which may be positive) by pouring out our vitriol about countries and groups of people on here. We need to do better. Let's be fair and consider the opposing argument. We need not engage in making sweeping and absolute comments by putting in provisions for our own opinion being wrong. |
Great conversation here about savings and lifestyle generally - insightful and respectful. Keep it coming and keep up the good work folks |
Breezy90:If I may ask, how are you preparing for this? |
leksite120:lol.. You live in a world class city so there is that. It is -40 degrees C in winter here for a cumulative of 14 days per season. Lastly, there is an update, facility manager is saying the actual price is $1,680 but I know that is still a dime to Toronto's toonies! |

affoncad:The influx of immigrants serve a purpose. Let us ask ourselves, who are the greatest beneficiaries of this influx? Food, clothing and accommodation represent the bare necessities for anyone's survival. And there is arguable proof that by letting in the record number of immigrants, the economy is doing well. Loblaw Companies (owner of grocery chains Real Canadian Superstore, Wholesale, Independent Grocer, Shoppers Drug Mart) reported a first-quarter 2024 revenue of $13.58 billion, a 4.5% increase from the previous year, and a quarterly profit of $459 million, a 9.8% increase. During Dollarama’s latest quarterly conference call, CEO Neil Rossy called Canada’s growing population a “driver in the future.” The Montreal-based company sells a wide assortment of discount household essentials like knives, forks, pots and pans through more than 1,500 stores across Canada. BMO Capital Markets estimates nearly a third of Dollarama’s 2025 same-store sales growth will come from “elevated levels of immigration into Canada.” And the Prime Minister was on record saying that they need the housing situation to stay that way to maintain the retirement nest egg of the older generation. Let me quote him - “Housing needs to retain its value,” Mr. Trudeau told The Globe and Mail’s City Space podcast. “It’s a huge part of people’s potential for retirement and future nest egg.” The best way to maintain this value is to let in record number of immigrants. Here is a quote from Maximilien Roy, VP of the industry lobby group Restaurant Canada "We need to have international students coming in. It's a key group working in the industry for us." Immigrants bring in money, no matter how small. They need bank accounts (RBC, CIBC, BMO, TD..), phone lines (Telus, Rogers...) etc. So here are my two cents about this issue. Please note that these reflect my opinion and are not necessarily the objective truth. 1) The interest groups behind this record immigration are non partisan - if it were the Cons, the-same will happen. There is only one anti immigration party in Canada and I will not bother to name it. https://www.fraserinstitute.org/studies/understanding-the-changing-ratio-of-working-age-canadians-to-seniors-and-its-consequences 2) Things have moved from the realm of what is proper/ethical/right. It is now about 'what favors me'. I will give an example of this. In the next 24hours the City of Saskatoon will vote whether to accept or reject the federal government Home Accelerator Funding - this is tailored towards building apartments along BRT routes. The question is, why would they even consider rejecting free money to build homes when the city is being plagued by historically low housing availability in the face of record influx? There will be stiff opposition against accepting this from the FG. This stems from the fear of devaluation that comes from building apartment complex beside "these people's" 500k homes. 3) So I have moved to the realm of conspiracy theory now. You see, record immigration depresses wages. This is the blood stained claws of Capitalism. The employer prefer more people being available for the few available positions. The employer prefer 24/7 availability for a casual or temporary position - there are less responsibilities on the part of the employer to the employee with regards to a part time/casual position. These are only possible when there are more people. In the face of rising inflation, it is intuitive for workers to demand for an increment in wages and working conditions. This is happening in various jurisdictions for unionized professions. But for those 'other jobs' (yes, you know the jobs I am referring to) na OYO o! 4) This situation is perfect for the movers and shakers of this country and if it were the Cons in power, the-same would have happened. The lobby groups finance the various political parties and it is perfectly legal. Yes, it's looking likely that the Libs will be kicked out but I doubt if things will change even with the new party. My brother/sister, make we shine our eyes. Be ye wise as serpents and meek as doves. |
Priscilliade:Here goes - 1) Take a pen and a book, write down your definition of success as an immigrant. Let your spouse do the-same. If that definition is different for both of you, sit down and talk about it. Make sure you both have similarity, at least 75%, in what you both define as success. I would love to give you examples but this will defeat the purpose of this task. 2) If you have house help(s), then it is time to let them go, please do not forget to do so nicely, you will understand when you get to Manitoba. Both you and your spouse should be in charge of the day to day running of your home now - domestic chores, taking care of the kids and work. This is to prepare you for the days ahead. 3) Start applying for jobs. 4) If you will need to be licensed to work in your profession, then start talking to the licensing bodies and connecting with people who have gone through the-same process. 5)Connect with immigrant welcoming organizations. Their services are free, courtesy of the federal government. Also, if you wish, join the Nigerian WhatsApp group for your destination of choice. 6) Remember the son/daughter of whom you are. Remember that there will be a lot of information, both the ones you have asked for and unsolicited. Test every counsel, do not just accept any counsel/persuasion/advice hook, line and sinker because it's coming from Justin Trudeau. Shine your eyes. May the land favor you and yours, amen. I have assumed that you are married and with kid(s), if not, please oblige my erroneous presumption. |
colored:I know folks have contributed to this, but I just want to share my perspective. So, if we assume the population is as large as you claimed it to be, Why is that so? Could it be because they have been in Canada for more than a century? There were some Sikh Canadians who elected to serve in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War, 1914–1918. Before you say there were also Black regiments, yes, there were, but they were not made up of 'Nigerians'. I think they have paid their dues, and if we need to examine anything about them, we can explore what has made them, arguably, the most successful immigrant group in Canada. Lastly, they do not have to assimilate into the Canadian culture; otherwise, this will be an antithesis of the freedom and egalitarianism you talked about. I think it's worth saying that the predominant approach to diversity in Canada seems to be kaleidoscope-ic. And this is the conviction that Canadian national identity is rooted in diversity rather than in the elimination of difference, and this is what shapes public discourse in Canada. Let's learn what we can from them and use it to enrich our community. |
@EDNUT That's an awesome cycling infrastructure right there. It is that time of the year again. Please if you ride a bike, you should disembark your bike before you cross - it is safer to not ride across a crosswalk. Dismount and wheel your cycle across. Also, drivers, please use your mirrors. Stay safe out there everyone. |
Acquiredollars:So, I asked because it is important for me to ensure that I have the whole picture - first degree and experience is really important when it comes to getting a teaching license. I will share our experience. So we were in BC for a couple of years, Babe has a B. Tech in Mathematics from Lauthec + M. Ed from UVic and lots of teaching experience from Nigeria. BC granted a restricted teaching license - you can teach in non-public schools only. If you get an employment in a non public school with this license and teach for 2 years, you will get a non-restricted teaching license - you can teach in any school in BC only. If you have a non-B.Ed. and teaching experience from your home country, there is a bridging program at UVic that you can do to get licensed. Provincial governments have exclusive responsibility for all levels of education in Canada. Basically, it is their prerogative to set educational policy as federal ministry of education does not exist. You will need to research the province of your choice and get info from the provincial professional teachers board and their local University(ies) offering education programs. That is why in Saskatchewan, the professional teachers regulatory board did not issue restricted teaching license. They really did not care about the M.Ed. So they assess your credentials (WES) and then tell you all the courses that you need to do (to get a B.Ed and get an unrestricted teaching license that can be tendered anywhere in the country),you use this to apply for a bridging program at the local University - USask, which gives admission preference to mature applicants (applicants with prior tertiary education and teaching experience). Please note that these info is at least 2 years old. Feel free to contact the provincial professional teachers board and the teacher education program administrators in each Uni I hope this 'turenshi' will be helpful. Cheers. |
