It is -40 degrees C in winter here for a cumulative of 14 days per season.

Lastly, there is an update, facility manager is saying the actual price is $1,680 but I know that is still a dime to Toronto's toonies!

The influx of immigrants serve a purpose. Let us ask ourselves, who are the greatest beneficiaries of this influx? Food, clothing and accommodation represent the bare necessities for anyone's survival. And there is arguable proof that by letting in the record number of immigrants, the economy is doing well.

Loblaw Companies (owner of grocery chains Real Canadian Superstore, Wholesale, Independent Grocer, Shoppers Drug Mart) reported a first-quarter 2024 revenue of $13.58 billion, a 4.5% increase from the previous year, and a quarterly profit of $459 million, a 9.8% increase.
During Dollarama’s latest quarterly conference call, CEO Neil Rossy called Canada’s growing population a “driver in the future.” The Montreal-based company sells a wide assortment of discount household essentials like knives, forks, pots and pans through more than 1,500 stores across Canada. BMO Capital Markets estimates nearly a third of Dollarama’s 2025 same-store sales growth will come from “elevated levels of immigration into Canada.”

And the Prime Minister was on record saying that they need the housing situation to stay that way to maintain the retirement nest egg of the older generation. Let me quote him - “Housing needs to retain its value,” Mr. Trudeau told The Globe and Mail’s City Space podcast. “It’s a huge part of people’s potential for retirement and future nest egg.”
The best way to maintain this value is to let in record number of immigrants.

Here is a quote from Maximilien Roy, VP of the industry lobby group Restaurant Canada "We need to have international students coming in. It's a key group working in the industry for us." Immigrants bring in money, no matter how small. They need bank accounts (RBC, CIBC, BMO, TD..), phone lines (Telus, Rogers...) etc.

So here are my two cents about this issue. Please note that these reflect my opinion and are not necessarily the objective truth.

1) The interest groups behind this record immigration are non partisan - if it were the Cons, the-same will happen. There is only one anti immigration party in Canada and I will not bother to name it.

2) Things have moved from the realm of what is proper/ethical/right. It is now about 'what favors me'. I will give an example of this. In the next 24hours the City of Saskatoon will vote whether to accept or reject the federal government Home Accelerator Funding - this is tailored towards building apartments along BRT routes. The question is, why would they even consider rejecting free money to build homes when the city is being plagued by historically low housing availability in the face of record influx?
There will be stiff opposition against accepting this from the FG. This stems from the fear of devaluation that comes from building apartment complex beside "these people's" 500k homes.

3) So I have moved to the realm of conspiracy theory now. You see, record immigration depresses wages. This is the blood stained claws of Capitalism. The employer prefer more people being available for the few available positions. The employer prefer 24/7 availability for a casual or temporary position - there are less responsibilities on the part of the employer to the employee with regards to a part time/casual position. These are only possible when there are more people.
In the face of rising inflation, it is intuitive for workers to demand for an increment in wages and working conditions. This is happening in various jurisdictions for unionized professions. But for those 'other jobs' (yes, you know the jobs I am referring to) na OYO o!

4) This situation is perfect for the movers and shakers of this country and if it were the Cons in power, the-same would have happened. The lobby groups finance the various political parties and it is perfectly legal. Yes, it's looking likely that the Libs will be kicked out but I doubt if things will change even with the new party.
My brother/sister, make we shine our eyes. Be ye wise as serpents and meek as doves.

Here goes -

1) Take a pen and a book, write down your definition of success as an immigrant. Let your spouse do the-same. If that definition is different for both of you, sit down and talk about it. Make sure you both have similarity, at least 75%, in what you both define as success. I would love to give you examples but this will defeat the purpose of this task.

2) If you have house help(s), then it is time to let them go, please do not forget to do so nicely, you will understand when you get to Manitoba. Both you and your spouse should be in charge of the day to day running of your home now - domestic chores, taking care of the kids and work. This is to prepare you for the days ahead.

3) Start applying for jobs.

4) If you will need to be licensed to work in your profession, then start talking to the licensing bodies and connecting with people who have gone through the-same process.

5)Connect with immigrant welcoming organizations. Their services are free, courtesy of the federal government. Also, if you wish, join the Nigerian WhatsApp group for your destination of choice.

6) Remember the son/daughter of whom you are. Remember that there will be a lot of information, both the ones you have asked for and unsolicited. Test every counsel, do not just accept any counsel/persuasion/advice hook, line and sinker because it's coming from Justin Trudeau. Shine your eyes.

May the land favor you and yours, amen. I have assumed that you are married and with kid(s), if not, please oblige my erroneous presumption.

What do you guys think of the way Indians are taking over Canada in massive numbers? Brampton's demography is 80% Indian. And it's not like they are assimilating into the Canadian culture, they are instead forming their own parallel society within Canada, posing a threat to Canadian values. Canada is appealing to me and to many not just because of her economic opportunities but also because of her values of freedom and egalitarianism.

Diversity isn't importing immigrants from only one part of the world, it is balancing the immigrants who are coming in so that diverse countries can be represented. The US understands this very well which is why Nigerians are no longer eligible for visa lottery because they have taken in over 50k Nigerians, exceeding the threshold they set for Nigerians.

I know folks have contributed to this, but I just want to share my perspective.
So, if we assume the population is as large as you claimed it to be, Why is that so?

Could it be because they have been in Canada for more than a century? There were some Sikh Canadians who elected to serve in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War, 1914–1918. Before you say there were also Black regiments, yes, there were, but they were not made up of 'Nigerians'.
I think they have paid their dues, and if we need to examine anything about them, we can explore what has made them, arguably, the most successful immigrant group in Canada.

Lastly, they do not have to assimilate into the Canadian culture; otherwise, this will be an antithesis of the freedom and egalitarianism you talked about. I think it's worth saying that the predominant approach to diversity in Canada seems to be kaleidoscope-ic. And this is the conviction that Canadian national identity is rooted in diversity rather than in the elimination of difference, and this is what shapes public discourse in Canada.

Let's learn what we can from them and use it to enrich our community.

So, I asked because it is important for me to ensure that I have the whole picture - first degree and experience is really important when it comes to getting a teaching license. I will share our experience.

So we were in BC for a couple of years, Babe has a B. Tech in Mathematics from Lauthec + M. Ed from UVic and lots of teaching experience from Nigeria. BC granted a restricted teaching license - you can teach in non-public schools only. If you get an employment in a non public school with this license and teach for 2 years, you will get a non-restricted teaching license - you can teach in any school in BC only. If you have a non-B.Ed. and teaching experience from your home country, there is a bridging program at UVic that you can do to get licensed.

Provincial governments have exclusive responsibility for all levels of education in Canada. Basically, it is their prerogative to set educational policy as federal ministry of education does not exist. You will need to research the province of your choice and get info from the provincial professional teachers board and their local University(ies) offering education programs.

That is why in Saskatchewan, the professional teachers regulatory board did not issue restricted teaching license. They really did not care about the M.Ed. So they assess your credentials (WES) and then tell you all the courses that you need to do (to get a B.Ed and get an unrestricted teaching license that can be tendered anywhere in the country),you use this to apply for a bridging program at the local University - USask, which gives admission preference to mature applicants (applicants with prior tertiary education and teaching experience).

Please note that these info is at least 2 years old. Feel free to contact the provincial professional teachers board and the teacher education program administrators in each Uni

There is a number you can call, it is listed on CIC's website. It will be naive to not call. Call, book an appointment and stress the need for them to fix you on a day with less human traffic, don't forget that last part.
Be there early too, 7a.m. is not bad.

I just need to vent for a second. I am preparing for IELTS in January and I am finding listening practice test rather challenging. I have done over 40 tests on YouTube. My issue is that I don't even know which ones are real because when I do the ones posted by some channels I rarely get higher than 34, they are wickedly difficult but when I do the ones by some other channels I always get 39 or 40 and I feel they are too easy. It's confusing, how do I know which ones are real? They all have similar patterns and voice recordings.
I really need to improve my listening. My husband that I am the one that tells him what they say in Oyinbo films(he doesn't hear their accent) is even getting higher scores in d practice tests. Any tips Pls helep.

Try and start using the Cambridge/ESOL materials. Find a quiet place and practice. I usually advice peeps to attempt all the sections at a stretch (and not to practice them in isolation) - LWRS....just so you can simulate exam conditions and build strength for the real thing. Do not worry about the scores, they will improve over time and after much practice.
One trick is to look through the questions well, if possible get a grip on a couple of questions at a time so you can listen in for the answers.

Yes it is very much possible. Without knowing a soul in that country, you can make your mark....there are countless examples of Sapiens migrating for succor and/or sustenance to a new land without having family member(s) therein, the space here is not enough to start mentioning examples. You are not the first, you surely will not be the last. So, what you need to do is start now, right where you are....ask your questions and devote time to reading this thread. Remember, there is nothing like the human will.....

With respect to your other question about WES’ m.o. ; my transcripts and certificate (faxed) for the first degree were sent and confirmed by the institution. After the confirmation of Master’s degree certificate (faxed also),evaluation status changed to “in progress” . I sent transcripts for the second degree later, after a week or two. Got the ECA result. Few months later, on applying for upgrade to a course by course evaluation, confirmation of second degree transcripts halted the process momentarily till the institution responded. I think WES puts premium on authenticity of degrees with respect to ECA for IRCC...
