Imagine British Steel was literally dying. Tinubu had to save it by signing a £70m deal that will sustain British jobs. The predecessor of the Shar was ousted in a coup d'etat aided by the Brits and Americans. So this whole thing goes way back and it's more complicated than it seems. |

The US did **not** orchestrate or support his overthrow—in fact, the revolution was a major strategic loss for Washington, leading to severed ties, the 1979–1981 Iran hostage crisis, and long-term hostility. Some conspiracy theories claim the US "plotted" to remove the Shah or backed Khomeini, but historical evidence shows no direct US role in forcing him out. Instead, the Carter administration tried (unsuccessfully) to support the Shah during the crisis and later underestimated the revolution's momentum. To contrast: The US **did** play a direct role in **strengthening** the Shah's rule earlier—via the 1953 CIA- and MI6-orchestrated coup (Operation Ajax) that overthrew democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh after he nationalized Iran's oil industry. This reinstated the Shah as an absolute monarch and deepened US influence, but it also sowed long-term resentment that contributed to anti-Shah and anti-American sentiment fueling the 1979 revolution. The royal family went into exile (the Shah died in Egypt in 1980), and his son, Reza Pahlavi (the current exiled crown prince), has lived mostly in the US since then, advocating against the Islamic Republic. The overthrow was driven by internal Iranian forces, not by the US "kicking them out." |
