Science/TechnologyYoung People Are Growing HORNS- Phones Are To Blame by fesdo(op): 8:49pm On Jun 20, 2019
Mobile technology has transformed the way we live — how we read, work, communicate, shop and date.
But we already know this.
What we have not yet grasped is the way the tiny machines in front of us are remolding our skeletons, possibly altering not just the behaviors we exhibit but the bodies we inhabit.
New research in biomechanics suggests that young people are developing hornlike spikes at the back of their skulls — bone spurs caused by the forward tilt of the head, which shifts weight from the spine to the muscles at the back of the head, causing bone growth in the connecting tendons and ligaments. The weight transfer that causes the buildup can be compared to the way the skin thickens into a callus as a response to pressure or abrasion.
The result is a hook or hornlike feature jutting out from the skull, just above the neck.
In academic papers, a pair of researchers at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia, argues that the prevalence of the bone growth in younger adults points to shifting body posture brought about by the use of modern technology. They say smartphones and other handheld devices are contorting the human form, requiring users to bend their heads forward to make sense of what’s happening on the miniature screens.
The researchers said their discovery marks the first documentation of a physiological or skeletal adaptation to the penetration of advanced technology into everyday life.
Health experts warn of “text neck,” and doctors have begun treating “texting thumb,” which is not a clearly defined condition but bears resemblance to carpal tunnel syndrome. But prior research has not linked phone use to bone-deep changes in the body.
“An important question is what the future holds for the young adult populations in our study, when development of a degenerative process is evident in such an early stage of their lives?” ask the authors in one paper, published in Nature Research’s peer-reviewed, open-access Scientific Reports. The study came out last year but has received fresh attention following the publication last week of a BBC story that considers, “How modern life is transforming the human skeleton.”
Since then, the unusual formations have captured the attention of Australian media, and have variously been dubbed “head horns” or “phone bones” or “spikes” or “weird bumps.”
Each is a fitting description, said David Shahar, the paper’s first author, a chiropractor who recently completed a PhD in biomechanics at Sunshine Coast.
“That is up to anyone’s imagination,” he told The Washington Post. “You may say it looks like a bird’s beak, a horn, a hook.”
However it is designated, Shahar said, the formation is a sign of a serious deformity in posture that can cause chronic headaches and pain in the upper back and neck.
Part of what was striking about the findings, he said, was the size of the bone spurs, which are thought to be large if they measure 3 or 5 millimeters in length. An outgrowth was only factored into their research if it measured 10 millimeters, or about two-fifths of an inch.
The danger is not the head horn itself, said Mark Sayers, an associate professor of biomechanics at Sunshine Coast who served as Shahar’s supervisor and co-author. Rather, the formation is a “portent of something nasty going on elsewhere, a sign that the head and neck are not in the proper configuration,” he told The Post.
Their work began about three years ago with a pile of neck X-rays taken in Queensland. The images captured part of the skull, including the area where the bony projections, called enthesophytes, form at the back of the head.
Contrary to conventional understanding of the hornlike structures, which have been thought to crop up rarely and mainly among older people suffering from prolonged strain, Shahar noticed that they appeared prominently on X-rays of younger subjects, including those who were showing no obvious symptoms.
The pair’s first paper, published in the Journal of Anatomy in 2016, enlisted a sample of 218 X-rays, of subjects ages 18 to 30, to suggest that the bone growth could be observed in 41 percent of young adults, much more than previously thought. The feature was more prevalent among men than among women.
The effect — known as enlarged external occipital protuberance — used to be so uncommon, Sayers said, that one of its early observers, toward the end of the 19th century, objected to its title, arguing that there was no real protrusion.
That’s no longer the case.
Another paper, published in Clinical Biomechanics30093-7/fulltext) in the spring of 2018, used a case study involving four teenagers to argue that the head horns were not caused by genetic factors or inflammation, pointing instead to the mechanical load on muscles in the skull and neck.
And the Scientific Reports paper, published the month before, zoomed out to consider a sample of 1,200 X-rays of subjects in Queensland, ages 18 to 86. The researchers found that the size of the bone growth, present in 33 percent of the population, actually decreased with age. That discovery was in stark contrast to existing scientific understanding, which had long held that the slow, degenerative process occurred with aging.
They found instead that the bone spurs were larger and more common among young people. To understand what was driving the effect, they looked to recent developments — circumstances over the past 10 or 20 years altering how young people hold their bodies.
“These formations take a long time to develop, so that means that those individuals who suffer from them probably have been stressing that area since early childhood,” Shahar explained.
The sort of strain required for bone to infiltrate the tendon pointed him to handheld devices that bring the head forward and down, requiring the use of muscles at the back of the skull to prevent the head from falling to the chest. “What happens with technology?” he said. “People are more sedentary; they put their head forward, to look at their devices. That requires an adaptive process to spread the load.”
Michael Nitabach, a professor of physiology, genetics and neuroscience at Yale University, was unconvinced by the findings.
“Without knowing about the cell phone use of any of the people whose head X-rays were analyzed, it is impossible to draw conclusions about correlation between cell phone use and skull morphology,” he said.
That the bone growth develops over a long period of time suggests that sustained improvement in posture can stop it short and even ward off its associated effects, the authors said.
Sayers said the answer is not necessarily swearing off technology. At least, there are less drastic interventions.
“What we need are coping mechanisms that reflect how important technology has become in our lives,” he said.
Shahar is pressing people to become as regimented about posture as they became about dental hygiene in the 1970s, when personal care came to involve brushing and flossing every day. Schools should teach simple posture strategies, he said. Everyone who uses technology during the day should get used to recalibrating their posture at night.
As motivation, he suggested reaching a hand around to the lower rear of the skull. Those who have the hornlike feature can probably feel it.

David Beckham banned from driving for using mobile phone

David Beckham arrives at Bromley Magistrates' Court
David Beckham has been given a six-month driving ban for using his mobile phone while behind the wheel.

The former England captain previously pleaded guilty to using the device while driving his Bentley in central London on 21 November last year.

A court heard he was photographed by a member of the public holding a phone as he drove in "slowly moving" traffic.

Beckham, 44, received six points on his licence to add to the six he already had for previous speeding matters.

He was also fined £750, ordered to pay £100 in prosecution costs and a £75 surcharge fee within seven days.

District Judge Catherine Moore said she acknowledged the slow pace of the traffic but told him there was "no excuse" under the law.

Bromley Magistrates' Court heard Beckham was seen "operating a handheld device at knee level" while driving along Great Portland Street in the West End.

Prosecutor Matthew Spratt said: "Instead of looking straight forward, paying attention to the road he appeared to be looking at his lap."

Beckham's defence barrister Gerrard Tyrrell said the former Manchester United midfielder had "no recollection of the day in question or this particular incident".

He added: "There is no excuse for what took place but his view is that he cannot remember."

Mr Tyrrell told the court that Beckham found driving a relaxing pastime.

"He takes his children to school each day when he can and he picks them up when he can, and actually to deprive them of that is something that he will acknowledge," he said.

Analysis by BBC Reality Check

It's against the law in the UK to hold a phone while driving, although hands-free devices are allowed. It's punishable by six penalty points on your licence and a £200 fine - but, depending on the seriousness of the offence, you can also be taken court to face more severe penalties.

In England and Wales in 2017, there were 8,300 convictions for using a handheld mobile phone whilst driving. Almost all were dealt with through a fine, which averaged out at £180.

Convictions have fallen a lot since their peak of 32,548 in 2010.

Looking at who was convicted, 86% were men and 21% were under 25 years old.

In Scotland in 2017-18 there were 2,881 convictions for the category of "other motor vehicle offences", which covers using a mobile phone and not wearing a seatbelt. Again, almost all were dealt with through fines.

In September, Beckham was accused of "shirking his responsibility" as a role model when he avoided prosecution on a speeding charge because of a technicality.

The father-of-four accepted he drove a loaned Bentley at 59mph in a 40mph zone in west London in January last year.

But his lawyer Nick Freeman - known as Mr Loophole - successfully fought to prevent action being taken because a speeding notice arrived one day late.

In March 2017, the punishment for driving while on the phone was doubled to six penalty points - enough to ban those with less than two years' experience.

HealthA Dream Killing Study: Weekend Catch Up Sleep Is A Lie by fesdo(op): 5:33pm On Mar 03, 2019
The negative health effects of skimping on sleep during the week can’t be reversed by marathon weekend sleep sessions, according to a sobering new study.
Researchers have long known that routine sleep deprivation can cause weight gain and increase other health risks, including diabetes. But for those who force themselves out of bed bleary-eyed every weekday after too few hours of shut-eye, hope springs eternal that shutting off the alarm on Saturday and Sunday will repay the weekly sleep debt and reverse any ill effects.
The research, published in Current Biology30098-3), crushes those hopes. Despite complete freedom to sleep in and nap during a weekend recovery period, participants in a sleep laboratory who were limited to five hours of sleep on weekdays gained nearly three pounds over two weeks and experienced metabolic disruption that would increase their risk for diabetes over the long term. While weekend recovery sleep had some benefits after a single week of insufficient sleep, those gains were wiped out when people plunged right back into their same sleep-deprived schedule the next Monday.
“If there are benefits of catch-up sleep, they’re gone when you go back to your routine. It’s very short-lived,” said Kenneth Wright, director of the sleep and chronobiology laboratory at the University of Colorado at Boulder, who oversaw the work. “These health effects are long-term. It’s kind of like smoking once was — people would smoke and wouldn’t see an immediate effect on their health, but people will say now that smoking is not a healthy lifestyle choice. I think sleep is in the early phase of where smoking used to be.”
Clifford Saper, head of neurology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, called the study “convincing and fascinating.”
Michael Grandner, director of the sleep and health research program at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, said the study reinforces that people need to stop thinking of sleep as a balance sheet. Imagine a person who ate nothing but cheeseburgers and french fries, Monday through Friday, but dined only on celery and kale on the weekends and tried to call that a healthy diet, he said. Drastically cutting calories all week and then bingeing on a giant pizza on Saturday wouldn’t restore equilibrium, either. That, he argued, is essentially what people are doing when they skip sleep on weekdays with the idea they can make up for it on the weekend.
“When you’re talking about something as complex as metabolism, it’s very much about balance and equilibrium, and when you’re chasing numbers of hours and you’re trying to make them all add up, that’s not about balance,” Grandner said.
Wright said that the study suggests people should prioritize sleep — cutting out the optional “sleep stealers” such as watching television shows or spending time on electronic devices. Even when people don’t have a choice about losing sleep due to child-care responsibilities or job schedules, they should think about prioritizing sleep in the same way they would a healthy diet or exercise.
As for understanding the long-term effects of short weekday sleep and long weekend bouts, it will be important to extend the research beyond the artificial conditions and short time frame of a laboratory experiment. The researchers also found an intriguing gender difference, in which women got less recovery sleep on the weekends, and also were able to restrain their eating behavior better than men on the weekends — but experienced the same metabolic dysfunction, as measured by impairments in how their body responded to blood sugar.
"These were incredibly healthy people, with no medical problems, no psychiatric disorders, no drug use, no medications, no sleep problems, nothing at all — so when we put them on these types of schedules, they have the best possible outcomes, they have the lowest risk of any adverse health outcome as far as we can tell,” Wright said.

TravelWhat You Wear On A Flight Can Help Save Your Life Up by fesdo(op): 11:35pm On Aug 05, 2018
There's perhaps nothing more terrifying than the thought of being on a plane when it crashes. If you were to somehow survive such a calamity, you'd rightly call it a travel miracle.
But there are actually several simple things you can do to increase your chances of getting safely off a plane after something bad happens, says CNN transportation analyst Mary Schiavo.
Modern aircraft are designed for passengers to be able to evacuate within 90 seconds, said Schiavo, a safety advocate and aviation lawyer who has represented fliers and crew members of several aviation accidents. A lot of times, being a smart passenger who can evacuate from a plane in such a quick time period begins with your clothes.
Wear sensible shoes
It's pretty tempting sometimes just to take those shoes off after boarding a flight. But Schiavo advises keeping them on — and make sure they're sensible — in case you have to run.
"You'd want to keep them on because if something happens on takeoff — and remember takeoffs and landings are the most dangerous parts of a flight — if you have on silly shoes or no shoes, you can't get up, evacuate the plane and run," she told CNN.
She pointed to the survivors of Aeromexico Flight 2431, which crashed in July in northern Mexico with 103 people on board. Everyone survived the crash, but she notes they had to walk through some pretty tough terrain after they got off the plane.
Wear clothing that covers your arms and legs
Schiavo says this is excellent protection against burns, scrapes and abrasions.
"When your arms and legs are covered you have a layer of protection between you and something that can harm you," she said.
Doing so can not only save you, but it could also be the difference between life and death for someone else.
"Always wear something that covers your arms and legs because you never know when you might have to save your seatmate."
Don't get drunk
Getting wasted on a flight isn't cool at any time, but especially during an emergency evacuation, because it makes it just that much harder to get everybody out of the aircraft.
"That person's not only a hazard to themselves, but they're a hazard to others," Schiavo said. "They're going to be a big hazard in an evacuation."
Know where the exits are
Schiavo says the first thing she does when she boards a flight, even before sitting down in her seat, is to find the exits.
"I see how far away they are; I look down to see where the emergency lighting is," she said.
Just doing those simple things can save passengers time, and in an emergency on a plane, "success is measured in seconds."
She said the aviation industry has also made changes to planes to give passengers more time, including switching out the fabric and padding on airplane seats with material that's more fire resistant.
"Just changing that gave passengers extra seconds before the cabin filled with deadly fumes. So every little change is measured in the time it gives passengers to get off" the aircraft, she said.
TravelMexico Plane Crash Miracle ——all Survive by fesdo(op): 2:44pm On Aug 01, 2018
A passenger plane has crashed in the capital of Mexico's Durango state, just moments after take-off.
All 103 passengers and crew on board the Aeroméxico flight survived the crash but 97 of them are injured.
State Governor José Rosas Aispuro said the plane was hit by a gust of wind, which caused a sudden descent. Its left wing then touched the ground and two engines came off.
Most of the passengers were able to walk away before it caught fire.
Aeroméxico flight AM2431 was flying from Guadalupe Victoria International Airport in Durango to Mexico City when it crashed at around 16:00 local time (21:00 GMT).
Initial reports spoke of 97 passengers and four crew, but Governor Rosas said that two children were also on board - bringing the total to 103.
The plane's pilot is one of two who were seriously injured. He needed an operation on his spine but is reportedly in a stable condition. A young girl sustained burns.
Ninety-seven other people were taken to hospital but most had only "very light" injuries, officials said.
'We have to jump'
Passenger Jacqueline Flores described the moment she knew something was wrong.
"When we were already aloft, up high, it felt like the plane was going to level out but just then it plunged to the ground," she told the AFP news agency.
"I think we fell back on the runway because it was a hard surface, then we skidded on the ground until it stopped," the 47-year-old said.
"I undid my seatbelt and saw flames, and realised we had to jump. There was a hole right next to us where the plane had broken up. I told my girl, 'We have to jump over here', and we jumped," she added.
A local politician on board the flight, Rómulo Campuzano, said he had been "very lucky because I was able to get out by the main door". He said the door had been torn off and was lying next to the plane "acting as a ramp".
"I walked away from the plane, turning around to see if the other passengers were getting out, too. It started raining very hard and I think that helped put out the flames," he said.
Safe evacuation
Governor Rosas said the crew were able to deploy the evacuation slides shortly after the crash, allowing those still on board to leave the plane safely before the flames spread.
The airline Aeroméxico has a good safety record, according to local media. Its last deadly accident was in 1981, when 32 people were killed when an Aeroméxico plane crashed on landing in northern Chihuahua state.
The airport operator, Grupo Aeroportuario Centro Norte, said early data suggested bad weather was the cause, and that the plane had taken off during a heavy hailstorm before being forced to attempt an emergency landing.
One passenger said the plane had been hit by lightning.
In a statement, Aeroméxico said they "deeply regret" the accident, while Brazilian plane company Embraer said they had sent a team to the crash site.

SportsNigeria World Cup Jessy Sells Out In 3 Minutés by fesdo(op): 7:26pm On Jun 01, 2018
Nigeria World Cup jersey sells out after just three minutes
an hour ago / autty
The Nike-designed jersey had a record three million pre-orders long before it went on sale and it sold out after just three minutes with the World Cup closing in.

Nigeria's World Cup kit had plenty of people talking before it was released on June 1st with a couple of weeks to tournament's first game. There was a record three million pre-orders for the stylish and unique jersey and it sold out after three minutes when it eventually did go on sale. It is no longer available on Nike's official website.

Check out the gallery of the Nigeria jersey as modelled by the team

There were rumours that counterfeit jerseys were being sold that would undermine the release date sales for the jersey but that was clearly not the case. NFF Vice President Shehu Dikko told KweséESPN that "it is the best selling kit due to uniqueness" and the appetite for the jersey has been obvious in Nigeria and online with queues down the road in the Nike shop in Nigeria.

Nigeria recently played DR Congo and drew 1-1 have Iceland, Argentina and Croatia in their group. Nigerians, and those who have adopted the country as their second team, will be hopeful that they can get a little extra wear out of the jerseys by making it to the knock-out stages.

Still wondering about moral decadence in our society...
I liked this young boy selling fuel.... his work rate and commitment attracted me to him..... I decided to buy fuel from him...I didn’t really needed it...
He pored the first 10 litres and asked if I needed more....I nodded in affirmation....

Then the wait began..... he left to bring more fuel....
Minutes turned to an hour .... I was frustrated but I couldn’t leave...not without paying him. Though I felt bad, I was motivated by his trust for me. Remember he didn’t ask for the money for the 10 lites before going to bring more...
My anger evaporated when I saw him coming agilely with 2 cans of 10 litres each

At his age, I thought that was brave.

He apologised on arrival and started dosing the fuel.

I said to myself..... I will top something on the bargained price. I gave him the money and he just mumbled thanks and hurried out.

I called him back and suggested he count the money... he did that quickly and told me it was complete

I urged him to count again.... I wanted him to see the money I added so I could explain how much I liked him... and this time I was watching him

He counted briskly fumbling the notes to confuse me.... I was utterly disappointed. I asked him to count with me...he just handed the excess to me and made to leave. My heart was broken....

I could not forget his hard work... I called him back. Spoke to him about honesty and its reward.... I increased the money and give him... his guilt turns to happiness and I felt happy too..,

Which way Naija!!!!!

SportsExplained: What Is A Medical And Why Is It Important In Club Football? by fesdo(op): 9:46pm On Jul 22, 2017
Explained: What is a medical and why is it important in club football?

As Romelu Lukaku’s transfer to Manchester United drew to a close and the papers announced that, ‘a deal has been agreed, subject to a medical,’ it suddenly dawned on me that if Lukaku fails his medical, he may not become a Manchester United player. But then, what were the chances of him failing his medical? It’s not that he had just started playing football. In fact, it is very rare when you hear that a player has failed one. So then, is it time for clubs to do away with the medical?

First things first- The Basics

Once a deal has been agreed with the selling club and personal terms agreed with the player, he then arrives for his medical. Every player is different and hence no two players have the same medicals. There is no standard medical checkup for every club. The clubs are free to follow there own procedures and have their own way of doing things. Suppose a player has had a calf injury in the past, his medical would focus more on the calf to check the probability of him having another such injury in the future.

Clubs can take upto 2-3 days to conduct a medical- which consists of a club doctor, a physiotherapist and a fitness team. Once the result is out, the information is passed onto the manager and a decision is taken.

There is nothing called as Pass or Fail in medicals

I have always thought that a medical is all about passing. But I realised, it’s not. It is important to understand that medical is not something which you pass and get selected This is not some school exam where even with a passing mark you get promoted to the next class. The stakes are much bigger this time.

Imagine that you spent £35m on a player and he passed his medicals only to later to find out that that player is not fit to play because of some reason. You might end up spending more time getting the player fit than the player playing for your club- not to forget the weekly wages that you are paying him just to be sidelined.

Dr Charlotte Cowie, a FA Doctor says that her team never really “pass” or “fail” a player. She adds, “One man’s fail is another man’s pass. It really depends on where the player is injury-wise, what the manager and the club want from that player and what it’s going to cost. It’s a risk-benefit analysis.”

You might all remember when Loic Remy ‘failed’ his medical at Liverpool and ‘passed’ it at Chelsea. So how did that happen? The answer is simple- Liverpool probably found something wrong in his medicals and thought it was best not to take a chance, whereas Chelsea thought the opposite.

A BBC sport reporter asked Dr Charlotte Cowie about how the players feel when they are going through a medical exam for a new club: “Sometimes they are anxious you are going to find out something they didn’t know about or something they did know but didn’t want you to know. You can’t always expect them to give you all the information about their injuries.”

It’s all about the heart

Back in the old days, a medical didn’t involve checking the heart status of a player as it was considered young people won’t face such issues. But with time, things changed. You might all remember Marc Vivien Foe and Phil O’Donnell who succumbed to undiagnosed heart problems. Another player to have a heart attack while on the pitch was Fabric Muamba. The Bolton midfielder was lucky enough to survive. After previous tragedies, players have a regular check-up to detect any heart related issues.

Depending on the time clubs have at hand, MRI scans, blood tests and cardiac screenings are also conducted. Clubs doctors may also include a urine test which could help indicate health related issues like diabetes.

Muscles

The medical team also check the musculoskeletal stability-the strength of the back and the lower abdomen. This test helps determine if a player will have any problems with his hamstrings or quads which is a common aliment for a footballer.

Players are told to do a number of squats, lunges and hop test which will reveal whether or not a player is fit enough to play 50+ games a season. Joints, key muscle and weak spots, if any, will also be assessed during the checkup. The pelvis is a key area which most of the doctors check as it a very crucial area for both the upper and the lower body strength.

Player’s position also influence the medicals- for goalkeepers, medics pay more attention to the shoulder, wrist, hands and elbows.

Timing of the transfer

The timing of the transfer is very important when it comes to the medicals. For the winter transfer window, clubs are looking for players who are ready to hit the ground running. As there is no pre-season after the winter transfer window, clubs do not prefer players who have not played for a couple of months. Also, being the middle of the season, clubs do not prefer players who are injured. However, there have been exceptions to this in the past.

The medical examination changes on the deadline day, as there is a lot of panic and rush to sign the player before time runs out. It is a very quick examination and if time permits, the player is sent for a scan. While at other times, the club just has to make the decision based on the facts available and trust the player that he is telling the truth. However, there are cases where clubs have made mistakes - the best being Falcao to Manchester United.
CrimePathetic....,,,pastor Raped On Her Wedding Day by fesdo(op): 7:16pm On Jul 01, 2017
When Terry Gobanga - then Terry Apudo - didn't show up to her wedding, nobody could have guessed that she had been abducted, raped and left for dead by the roadside. It was the first of two tragedies to hit the young Nairobi pastor in quick succession. But she is a survivor.
It was going to be a very big wedding. I was a pastor, so all our church members were coming, as well as all our relatives. My fiance, Harry, and I were very excited - we were getting married in All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi and I had rented a beautiful dress.
But the night before the wedding I realised that I had some of Harry's clothes, including his cravat. He couldn't show up without a tie, so a friend who had stayed the night offered to take it to him first thing in the morning. We got up at dawn and I walked her to the bus station.
As I was making my way back home, I walked past a guy sitting on the bonnet of a car - suddenly he grabbed me from behind and dumped me in the back seat. There were two more men inside, and they drove off. It all happened in a fraction of a second.
A piece of cloth was stuffed in my mouth. I was kicking and hitting out and trying to scream. When I managed to push the gag out, I screamed: "It's my wedding day!" That was when I got the first blow. One of the men told me to "co-operate or you will die".

The men took turns to rape me. I felt sure I was going to die, but I was still fighting for my life, so when one of the men took the gag out of my mouth I bit his manhood. He screamed in pain and one of them stabbed me in the stomach. Then they opened the door and threw me out of the moving car.
I was miles from home, outside Nairobi. More than six hours had passed since I had been abducted.
A child saw me being thrown out and called her grandmother. People came running. When the police came they tried to get a pulse, but no-one could. Thinking I was dead, they wrapped me in a blanket and started to take me to the mortuary. But on the way there, I choked on the blanket and coughed. The policeman said: "She's alive?" And he turned the car around and drove me to the biggest government hospital in Kenya.
I arrived in great shock, murmuring incoherently. I was half-naked and covered in blood, and my face was swollen from being punched. But something must have alerted the matron, because she guessed I was a bride. "Let's go around the churches to see if they're missing a bride," she told the nurses.
By coincidence, the first church they called at was All Saints Cathedral. "Are you missing a bride?" the nurse asked.
The minister said: "Yes, there was a wedding at 10 o'clock and she didn't come."
When I didn't show up to the church, my parents were panicking. People were sent out to search for me. Rumours flew. Some wondered: "Did she change her mind?" Others said: "No, it's so unlike her, what happened?"
After a few hours, they had to take down the decorations to make room for the next ceremony. Harry had been put in the vestry to wait.
When they heard where I was, my parents came to the hospital with the whole entourage. Harry was actually carrying my wedding gown. But the media had also got wind of the story so there were reporters too.
I was moved to another hospital where I'd have more privacy. That was where the doctors stitched me up and gave me some devastating news: "The stab wound went deep into your womb, so you won't be able to carry any children."
I was given the morning-after pill, as well as antiretroviral drugs to protect me from HIV and Aids. My mind shut down, it refused to accept what had happened.
Harry kept saying he still wanted to marry me. "I want to take care of her and make sure she comes back to good health in my arms, in our house," he said. Truth be told, I wasn't in a position to say Yes or No because my mind was so jammed with the faces of the three men, and with everything that had happened.
A few days later, when I was less sedated, I was able to look him in the eye. I kept saying sorry. I felt like I had let him down. Some people said it was my own fault for leaving the house in the morning. It was really hurtful, but my family and Harry supported me.
The police never caught the rapists. I went to line-up after line-up but I didn't recognise any of the men, and it hurt me each time I went. It set back my recovery - it was 10 steps forward, 20 back. In the end I went back to the police station and said: "You know what, I'm done. I just want to leave it."
Three months after the attack I was told I was HIV-negative and got really excited, but they told me I had to wait three more months to be sure. Still, Harry and I began to plan our second wedding.
Although I had been very angry at the press intrusion, somebody read my story and asked to meet me. Her name was Vip Ogolla, and she was also a rape survivor. We spoke, and she told me she and her friends wanted to give me a free wedding. "Go wild, have whatever you want," she said.
I was ecstatic. I went for a different type of cake, much more expensive. Instead of a rented gown, now I could have one that was totally mine.
In July 2005, seven months after our first planned wedding, Harry and I got married and went on a honeymoon.
Twenty-nine days later, we were at home on a very cold night. Harry lit a charcoal burner and took it to the bedroom. After dinner, he removed it because the room was really warm. I got under the covers as he locked up the house. When he came to bed he said he was feeling dizzy, but we thought nothing of it.
It was so cold we couldn't sleep, so I suggested getting another duvet. But Harry said he couldn't get it as he didn't have enough strength. Strangely, I couldn't stand up either. We realised something was very wrong. He passed out. I passed out. I remember coming to. I would call him. At times he would respond, at other times he wouldn't. I pushed myself out of bed and threw up, which gave me some strength. I started crawling to the phone. I called my neighbour and said: "Something is wrong, Harry is not responding."
She came over immediately but it took me ages to crawl to the front door to let her in as I kept passing out. I saw an avalanche of people coming in, screaming. And I passed out again.
I woke up in hospital and asked where my husband was. They said they were working on him in the next room. I said: "I'm a pastor, I've seen quite a lot in my life, I need you to be very straight with me." The doctor looked at me and said: "I'm sorry, your husband did not make it."
I couldn't believe it.
Going back to church for the funeral was terrible. Just a month earlier I had been there in my white dress, with Harry standing at the front looking handsome in his suit. Now, I was in black and he was being wheeled in, in a casket.
People thought I was cursed and held back their children from me. "There's a bad omen hanging over her," they said. At one point, I actually believed it myself.
Others accused me of killing my husband. That really got me down - I was grieving.
The post-mortem showed what really happened: as the carbon monoxide filled his system, he started choking and suffocated.
I had a terrible breakdown. I felt let down by God, I felt let down by everybody. I couldn't believe that people could be laughing, going out and just going about life. I crashed.
One day I was sitting on the balcony looking at the birds chirping away and I said: "God, how can you take care of the birds and not me?" In that instant I remembered there are 24 hours a day - sitting in depression with your curtains closed, no-one's going to give you back those 24 hours. Before you know, it's a week, a month, a year wasted away. That was a tough reality.
I told everybody I would never ever get married again. God took my husband, and the thought of ever going through such a loss again was too much. It's something I wouldn't wish on anybody. The pain is so intense, you feel it in your nails.
But there was one man - Tonny Gobanga - who kept visiting. He would encourage me to talk about my husband and think about the good times. One time he didn't call for three days and I was so angry. That's when it hit me that I had fallen for him.
Tonny proposed marriage but I told him to buy a magazine, read my story and tell me if he still loved me. He came back and said he still wanted to marry me.
But I said: "Listen, there's another thing - I can't have children, so I cannot get married to you."
"Children are a gift from God," he said. "If we get them, Amen. If not, I will have more time to love you."
I thought: "Wow, what a line!" So I said Yes.
Tonny went home to tell his parents, who were very excited, until they heard my story. "You can't marry her - she is cursed," they said. My father-in-law refused to attend the wedding, but we went ahead anyway. We had 800 guests - many came out of curiosity.
It was three years after my first wedding, and I was very scared. When we were exchanging vows, I thought: "Here I am again Father, please don't let him die." As the congregation prayed for us I cried uncontrollably.
A year into our marriage, I felt unwell and went to the doctor - and to my great surprise he told me that I was pregnant.
As the months progressed I was put on total bed rest, because of the stab wound to my womb. But all went well, and we had a baby girl who we called Tehille. Four years later, we had another baby girl named Towdah.
Today, I am the best of friends with my father-in-law.
I wrote a book, Crawling out of Darkness, about my ordeal, to give people hope of rising again. I also started an organisation called Kara Olmurani. We work with rape survivors, as I call them - not rape victims. We offer counselling and support. We are looking to start a halfway house for them where they can come and find their footing before going back to face the world.
I have forgiven my attackers. It wasn't easy but I realised I was getting a raw deal by being upset with people who probably don't care. My faith also encourages me to forgive and not repay evil with evil but with good.
The most important thing is to mourn. Go through every step of it. Get upset until you are willing to do something about your situation. You have to keep moving, crawl if you have to. But move towards your destiny because it's waiting, and you have to go and get it.

Nairaland GeneralAfter Work, Is What Determines Your Future! Spend One Hour Per Day Doing These 5 by fesdo(op): 1:02pm On May 19, 2016
After work, is what determines your future! Spend one hour per day doing these 5 things and your life will change forever!

You finish work at 6 pm, go to bed at 12 midnight.

Within these six hours, how do you spend them?

Watching TV?

In fact, the activities you do between 6 am and 12 midnight,

the importance of it is beyond your imagination.

Too many people believe that,

your career is determined by the 8 hours of hard work and effort you put at work,

and your future and career progression depend on the boss and the company.

But the reality is that for most people, this thing, you are on your own…..

Read on…

“Cultivation”, it’s forever dependent by yourself.

If you found yourself not progressing in life,

you cannot blame and put the responsibility on your company for not grooming you.

1. What you do every night is important

My major in college was marketing, but I expect to become a designer.

So I practiced day and night,

picking up some freelance work to improve my design skills.

It took me a long time.

When I became a boss, I no longer need to involve myself in design work,

So I went back to the Marketing field.

Every day, when my children are sleeping,

I began learning to gain more knowledge, this again took me a long time,

But I begin to realise my returns.

If I rely on my working hours to gain skills,

then I will never have become a creative director and a product manager,

or like today, teaching MBA students on Marketing.

What I rely on, is myself giving myself “lessons”.

And the most successful people I knew, walked the same path as I am.

I have a friend who is a History graduate,

but he is interested in technical sales,

In the day, he does telemarketing, at night he learns how to code,

Finally, he became the vice president of sales in a startup company.

Now, he’s a CTO.

I have another friend, he received a degree in political science.

But he’s very interested in entrepreneurship.

he learnt a lot of knowledge on how to start up a company,

eventually, he founded a company and sold it,

Now he has reaped the rewards.

For them, what they do between 6 pm till 12 midnight,

is what determined their future.

Clearly, we need to balance life and work.

If you have a wife and children, every night, you have to stay with them.

Even if you are single, you also need a reasonable allocation of time to go to the gym, to meet with friends, or be alone to meditate and so on.

Of course, watching movies, playing games is good.

But there are things you do not need to do.

For example, watching the new season of a Netflix drama,

14 hours per week watching television (This is the average amount of time watching television).

The time spent playing the game Candy Crush.

Or spending time stalking your high school alumni on Facebook,

it does not seem to be good.

So what should you do?

2. Read more, anything will do!

My college mentor was born in Alabama,

A poor African family.

He was admitted to West Point Military Academy, and he became the first person in the family to go college.

Before going to Havard for his MBA, he’s a trained officer.

When I met him, he has already developed his career in the city of Colorado Springs.

I asked him, what’s his biggest success?

He replied, because he kept the habit of reading,

and he never stopped.

He believed that if you want to get what you want in life,

knowledge is the key.

He often asked his interviewees what book are they reading now,

the excellent ones can give an answer immediately.

Reading can give you a good headstart,

this is often what your peers cannot obtain.

Compared to others,

you are more likely to know other industries strategies and tactics,

and that may be helpful to your company.

You can transfer your knowledge within the organization,

create new possibilities for your company.

Moreover, your conversation topics will become more interesting.

Anthony Robbins said:

“If you spend one hour a day to learn about a topic,

a year later, in this regard,

the knowledge you gain will be more than 99.999% of the world’s people.”

Even if you have 30 minutes every night,

each week you can easily read a book.

You may not be an expert, but I promise,

you’ll know more than what your peers know.

3. Do some projects

You can apply the knowledge learnt to real work scenario,

this is only an ideal state.

If your company did not give you this opportunity,

create opportunities for yourself.

You can do some volunteer projects. They can bring you fame.

Working with a team,

you’ll understand how things work.

In the practical application of the industry,

and how it ultimately affect actual customers.

You’ll learn how to perform the task and meet deadlines,

and get feedbacks on what you are doing,

and benefit from it.

When you are not strong enough, these experience may not have any value to you.

But you are still a novice.

these experiences are far more valuable than the miserable pay you are getting.

If you can really convince others of your pockets of fruits of labour,

Then go try it. But do not let these private jobs affect your work.

4. Actively build your connections

In your career path,

a strong network of connections will make everything accelerate.

If you have not set up your own personal connections,

you’ll need to divide a portion of your time to do this.

A strong network of relationships, can enable you:

contact smart friends, and learn their opinions
get information and knowledge that are difficult to obtain
help the company look for more potential partners
or income generating opportunities
Go get to know your work colleague or boss…..

If you are an entrepreneur,

your network connections will be your early customers,

your staffs are a source of capital

rather than go home, or going to a bar,

you should find some inner circles.

There are many small groups which are highly relevant to your career.

You should try to integrate into these circles.

Every week, you can drink coffee together with new friends,

go drinking or have breakfast.

You can also look into everyone’s career developments on LinkedIn.

And establish a network with mentors in those professional industries.

They may be your next job employer, who knows?

Your connections will be your most powerful asset in the workplace.

Since you have time to watch “The Voice of China”,

you have time to build a social network.

5. The CHANGE of your LIFE starts TONIGHT7

6 pm to 12 am, you go home, though physically and mentally tired,

you are free to do anything and do not have to take orders from others.

During this time,

you can switch off like switching off your computer at your workplace, switch off your brain.

But you can also do something,

make you smarter, stronger, have a wider network of people.

From the start tonight, take an hour a day to do these things,

I guarantee that after a year,

your career, and life will change

HealthThe Wonders Of Bitter Leaf by fesdo(op): 12:17am On Apr 27, 2016
Bitter leaf popularly used to prepare soup in the eastern part of Nigeria is now known to be a wonder vegetable with medicinal properties which can be used to treat different ailments such as reducing blood sugar levels in diabetic patients

MANY Nigerians are resorting to the use of natural herbs and plants to take care of their health problems and improve their well-being. One of such popular herbs is the bitter leaf which has undeniable benefits and natural healing abilities. Popularly known as Ewuro by the Yorubas, Shiwaka by the Hausas and Onugbu amongst the Igbos, bitter leaf is used in preparing a famous delicacy in the Igbo land. Apart from this, bitter leaf is well known for its healing potency when it is chewed or juiced raw because cooking reduces its potency and medicinal value.

Bitter leaf is generally considered a liver herb because it stimulates, cleanses and supports the liver and gall bladder. The liver which is one of the most important organs of the body has a lot of vital functions that is needed for normal functioning of the whole system of the body. Without the liver all major process in the body will be paralysed. Without the liver fats will not be digested inside the body to be used as energy. Bitter leaf is said to be very helpful in maintaining the livers optimum health to release bile acid every time people eat fatty foods.

Studies also show that bitter leaf can be used to cure kidney-related complications. Bitter leaf also stimulates bile and hydrochloric acid production, stimulates nervous and immune system function. Interestingly, it also combats fatigue and exhaustion. It is obviously one of the very simple and inexpensive natural herbs which can be used to ensure optimum health and well-being of the body system.

Bitter leaf does not only reduce the blood sugar level drastically, it also helps to repair the pancreas. According to some researchers writing in the Medical Journal of Islamic World Academy of Sciences, the administration of aqueous extract of bitter leaf at a concentration of 500 mg/kg of body weight significantly decreases the level of blood glucose and its efficacy to lower blood glucose level was comparable with that of chlorpropamide which is a standard drug used in the management of diabetes.

Regular consumption of this vegetable helps to regulate the blood’s cholesterol level which is a risk factor for heart attack and stroke. In cases of constipation, stomach ache and inflammation of the stomach, bitter leaf is a remedy. Bitter leaf has been widely used and recognised for its efficacy in preventing malaria. The raw leaves are plucked and washed before being squeezed to extract the juice. Drinking the juice alone is an antidote for malaria.

According to a 2005 edition of the African Journal of Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicines, chewing the stem of bitter leaf helps to prevent Gingivitis which is a tooth-gum problem due to its proven antimicrobial activity. Common skin diseases such as ringworm, eczema and others have been successfully treated with bitter leaf because of its antimicrobial effect. The bitter leaf protects the liver from drug induced damage.

Bitter leaf, if incorporated in the diet, can slow cancer growth and even kill cancer cells. The aqueous extract of bitter leaf can also help in inducing labour and where there is no medical help, blood oozing from fresh wound can be stopped by squeezing fresh, green bitter leaves and dropping it on the wound.

TravelBlaze Hits Dubai Skyscraper, New Year's Fireworks Proceed Nearby by fesdo(op): 10:17pm On Dec 31, 2015
Fire engulfed a 63-storey skyscraper in Dubai on Thursday night, but with the block evacuated and only minor injuries reported authorities went ahead with a New Year's fireworks display at the world's tallest building a few hundred meters away.

Tongues of flame shot skywards from one side of the luxury Address Downtown Dubai hotel and residential block, which stands across a plaza from the 160-storey Burj Khalifa tower where people had gathered for fireworks to mark the New Year.

Television pictures showed pieces of blazing debris raining down from The Address as evacuated occupants hurried away from the building, some running.

"We came out on my balcony to look at the Burj. All the buildings around here had fireworks prepped on the roof," Paul Mithun, a U.S. consultant in downtown Dubai said.

"We were like, huh, that looks like a little Olympic torch off in the distance. We thought someone lit fireworks. In under two minutes, the fire went up two-thirds of the length of the hotel. I watched the whole thing. It was real bad."

But as midnight struck, with the Address building continuing to burn, onlookers cheered as a swirling mass of multicoloured fireworks enveloped the Burj Khalifa.

The Dubai government's media office said the Address blaze was 90 percent under control. Police chief Major General Khamis Matar told Al Arabiya television: "All residents of the hotel were evacuated and there are 14 injured, with light injuries.”

A medic on the scene who declined to be identified told Reuters: "There are more than 60 people injured with light injuries from smoke inhalation and from crowding while in the stairs evacuating the building."

One resident staying on the 15th floor of the tower, completed in 2008, told Britain's Sky News of "absolute pandemonium" as those inside realized the building was ablaze.

"The alarms went off when the building was already properly on fire," he said.
