Governor Wike Pays Condolence Visit To The O. B. Lulu-Briggs Family

The Rivers State Governor, Chief Barr. Nyesom Wike visited the residence of High Chief (Dr.) O. B. Lulu-Briggs to commensurate with his family over his demise.

High Chief (Dr.) Olu Benson Lulu-Briggs, OON, DCF, DSSRS, Iniikeiroari V of Kalabari Kingdom, Paramount Head of Oruwari Briggs House of Abonnema, renowned Nigerian elder statesman, politician, businessman and philanthropist, was born on May 22, 1930 in Abonnema, Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State. He passed into glory in Accra, Ghana on December 27, 2018.

Governor Wike was received by the wife of the demised High Chief (Dr.) O. B. Lulu Briggs, Dr. (Mrs.) Seniye O. B. Lulu Briggs.

Speaking during the visit on Saturday in Port Harcourt, Governor Wike said the demised High Chief made very quality contributions to the development of Rivers State.

Governor Wike also described Late High Chief (Dr.) O. B. Lulu-Briggs as a worthy philanthropist who used his wealth to bless the less privileged in the society.

“God gives and God takes. As we come, so we came, so we shall leave. What is important is the contributions that we make to the society.

“God blessed him and he didn’t use the blessing for himself alone. He used the blessing for the society.”, he said.

Governor Wike said during his quest to govern Rivers State in 2014/2015, he consulted Late High Chief O.B. Lulu Briggs who supported his development blueprint.

He said: “He was a man that helped the less privileged. Everyone attests to the fact that he was a giver.

“I have seen the scholarships that he awards to the people”.

The governor said that as a politician under the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN), High Chief O.B. Lulu Briggs was committed to ideals of development .

Governor Wike assured that the Rivers State Government will actively participate in the burial ceremony of the Late Elder Statesman.

He urged the family to work hard to maintain the legacy of Late High Chief O.B Lulu Briggs.

Responding on behalf of the family, daughter of Late High Chief O.B Lulu Briggs, Mrs Solate Ovunda Akarolo thanked Governor Wike for leading a high-profile delegation to condole with the family.

She said that the family still misses their patriarch. She said that the family will inform the State Government of the burial programme at the appropriate time

Former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, former first lady, Dame Patience Jonathan were in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, January 30, 2019, to offer their condolences to the family of High Chief (Dr.) O.B. Lulu-Briggs, OON, DCF, DSSRS, Iniikeiroari V of Kalabari Kingdom, Paramount Head of Oruwari Briggs House of Abonnema, and Regent of Abonnema, who passed away on December 27, 2018 in Accra, Ghana.

Former President Jonathan and his wife, Patience were accompanied by Professor Seiyefa Brisibe, Niger Delta University, College of Medicine, and Honorable Tobias James, former Commissioner for Education, Bayelsa State, began their visit by signing the condolence register. Thereafter, they spent time with Dr. (Mrs) Seinye Lulu-Briggs, Mrs Solate Ovundah-Akarolo(daughter) and other family members.

Jonathan spoke glowingly about High Chief Lulu-Briggs, recalling the pioneering role he played in national politics and how he championed Niger Delta and minority issues in the second republic days when he was Deputy National Chairman of the defunct National Party of Nigeria(NPN).

He said: ‘High Chief was a courageous man who loved his people. He worked very hard. We know even in business, he was a successful man.
He was equally successful in politics. We are here to tell you that your husband, your father, our father was a good person, a good leader. We all miss him. We pray that God Almighty will accept him in his bosom. He has done his best on earth. He has helped so many people. He has encouraged so many people. He has contributed positively to the development of this state, Old Rivers State and to the development of the country in general. May his soul rest in peace.”

The former president revealed how the late Lulu-Briggs was one of the
earliest supporters of the Umaru Yar’Adua/Goodluck Jonathan Presidential raceof 2007.

He reminisced about their friendship, “Sometimes when he was in Abuja, he used to come and see me at State House. To me, the day I heard of his death was a sad moment.”

Since High Chief (Dr.) Lulu-Briggs passed away, his home has been a beehive of activity with dignitaries, friends, associates, beneficiaries of his philanthropy and well-wishers paying visits to commiserate with his family.

O.B. Lulu-Briggs Foundation set to host a week-long free medical mission in Akinima, Ahoada West Local Government Area.

The O.B. Lulu-Briggs Foundation is set to host a week-long free medical mission in Akinima, Ahoada West Local Government Area from February 4 – 8, 2018 at the Primary Health Care Centre, Akinima. The medical team headed by Dr. Blessing Etuk Akpan, Consultant Urologist, paid a condolence visit to Dr. Mrs Seinye O.B. Lulu-Briggs, the Chairman of the Foundation. High Chief (Dr) O.B. Lulu-Briggs who the Foundation is named after passed away in Accra, Ghana on December 27, 2018.

The Akinima Medical Mission will be staffed by 60 medical and 20 non-medical volunteers. They will provide surgical procedures, general health consulting, dental care; pediatric care, eye evaluation and treatment. Tests and medicine will be available via a pop-up laboratory and pharmacy.

It will be the 31st medical mission that the Foundation has hosted Since 2005 when the program began. Since then 117, 863 people in rural or peri urban communities across Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and Cross River states have received free medical attention.

This would be the second such mission to Ahoada West Local Government Area. The Foundation expects that it would be able to serve more than the 6, 490 people it treated the last time it hosted a medical mission in Akinima. It is encouraging attendance through tailored radio jingles and announcement across Ahoada West LGA.

Dr. Akpan extended the teams condolences, “On behalf of all the medical volunteers of the Foundation we wish to express our deepest condolence to you and the entire family on the demise of your husband, patriarch of the family, our sponsor and sole benefactor, High Chief (Dr.) O.B. Lulu-Briggs. He touched numerous lives positively in more ways than we can possibly enumerate. We are proud to be part of his passion for helping the helpless in our society through the humanitarian work of the Foundation. As medical volunteers we cherish the tears of joy and gratitude that our service brings to the faces of the countless beneficiaries of this scheme, and strongly believe that our dear High Chief will continue to live in the hearts of past, present and future beneficiaries of our noble service to humanity. May Almighty God grant you and the family the fortitude to bear this great loss.”

Amongst the medical volunteers on the condolence visit were Dr. Job Otokwala, Consultant Anesthesiologist, Dr. Lawson Stephenson, Consultant Medical Microbiologist and Parasitologist, and Dr. Emmanuel Iyo, the Foundation’s part-time doctor.

Since High Chief O.B. Lulu-Briggs passed away well-wishers have been trooping to his home to offer respects to his family.

The former beauty queen has lost her father yesterday, in an accident in Rivers State.

First Post Nigeria gathered that a trailer ran into the car conveying her father and brother, killing her father instantly.

According to a reliable source, her brother, Teddy is currently hospitalized somewhere in Port Harcourt.
