Just in: "Tonto Dike Was Arrested For Hard Drugs In Dubai". ...... Controversial investigative journalist Kemi Olunloyo reveals, wàrns, Samklef to steer off the ongoing bèef between VDM, Iyabo Ojo and Paulo. "TABLE BROKEN: Samklef will you SHÚT UP and keep your mouth off VDM vs lyabo/ Paulo Ask Tonto who has the second case against him why VDM trolls her all the time as his "wife." When Tonto was arrested for drúgs in Dubai, who was with her? Bobrisky.....VDM's superficial enemy. These ladies just going to disgrace themselves in court. Bobrisky was posting on Tonto's handle so ppl won't know she really arrested. It was through Paulo's music promoter connections in Dubai that got her released days later very late in the night. Was it not Paulo Okoye's house in Dubai she slept that night when Bobrisky was still waiting at the hotel? They bleeped each other that nite didn't they? Paulo didn't know lyabo yet. I was just becoming friends with him on booking music gig openings for my son then he met lyabo. I couldn't talk to him again. They all convert friends to enemies. Tonto brôke up with Bob only to tell Nigerians she used to wipe his sore a*us from ga segz with cotton wool, then Bobrisky shared the information on gbenshing Paulo. Politics / Politicsoyetola Boasts APC Will Reclaim Osun In 2026 by Fivekay(m): 7:06am On May 18 |
The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, declared on Friday the All Progressives Congress (APC) would reclaim Osun State from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2026 governorship election in the state. Oyetola stated this when he received a former PDP governorship aspirant in the state, Dotun Babayemi, and a former national deputy chairman of the party, Mr. Shuaibu Oyedokun, in Osogbo. He urged APC members to welcome the defectors into the party without discrimination. Oyetola, a former governor of Osun State, was defeated by Governor Ademola Adeleke in the July 16, 2022 governorship election in the state. He said: “It is an irony that we lost an election over a year ago and there has been no major defection from the party. What we have is the reverse. “It is the ruling party that is coming to us, which shows that APC remains a party to beat. We have done so well, and people are starting to see that when it comes to governance, the Progressive knows how to. “Alhaji Shuaibu and Dotun Babayemi were members of the APC but now they have seen the difference between progressive and conservative and they are back in to the party.” In his remarks, the APC chairman in the state, Mr. Tajudeen Lawal, said Babayemi and other defectors would enjoy equal opportunity as old members. “Your decision to defect into the APC is a wise choice which was influenced by God Almighty who has been your political pathfinder as the APC is a party of the people,’’ he said.

Nairaland / General / METROEFCC Launches Radio Station, Says It’ll Fight Against Fake News by Fivekay(m): 6:58am On May 18 |
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris Malagi and Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Mr. Ola Olukoyede on Thursday, bared their minds on the menace of fake news, stressing that all efforts should be geared towards fighting it. They made the disclosures in Abuja at the official commissioning of EFCC’s Radio, 97.3 F.M. Malagi congratulated the Commission on its war against economic and financial crimes, pointing out that no Nigerian today can ignore, deny or dismiss the impact of the EFCC. He particularly praised the initiative of a Radio Station by the Commission, explaining that it would empower it to fight false narratives, fake news and jaundiced presentation of its works. “As a Minister, we feel very glad for this step, because we put too much focus on catching people rather than advocacy, enlightenment and sensitization. I am happy now that we are making the right step in the right direction because nobody can tell a story better than you are, so fake news and misinformation are things we need to come together and fight by putting out facts so that the right information can be out there and radio is the simplest way of reaching the larger audience”, he said. He assured the EFCC of increased support and collaboration in the working of the Radio Station and other works of the Commission. “Be rest assured, we will do our best to ensure you achieve your goals of informing, enlightening and sanitizing, I am happy we have the EFCC joining us to achieve this. My principal role is to see that information is given accurately, I will urge other stations to support you too” he said. On his own part, Olukoyede went down memory lane concerning the conception and crystallization of the idea of a Radio Station for the Commission, describing its commissioning as a milestone. Like Malagi, he denounced the scourge of fake news and its attendant disservice to the works of the EFCC, maintaining that the Radio Station would help the Commission tell its own stories more accurately. “Communication offers us stronger weapons for breaking half-truths, lies, insinuations and other distortions of the works we do. Indeed, with our own Radio Station, we are in a better position to tell our stories, factually, ungarnished and unspun”, he said. The ETCc boss commended all those who played various roles in birthing the vision that has finally crystallized, particularly commending the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC for investing in the vision of the Commission at a time when ownership of license by public institutions was completely novel. “For us, owning a radio is not a status symbol but an important organ of mobilization against graft where communication and public engagement have the same impact and depth as our operational activities. Indeed, we are in a better position to tell our stories” “This avenue I believe will deepen the relationship with the public towards the fight against corruption. It is important to let people know about what we do. We recognize that radio has a wider reach so the next step is to increase the coverage so that the public can reach out to us and we too can reach out to the public” he said. The Chairman, Senate Committee on Anti-corruption and Financial Crimes, Sen. Emmanuel Udende, described corruption as a monster crippling growth and development of the nation. Those in attendance at the launch included Representatives of the Executive Secretary, Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria, Usman Umar Bello, Representatives of Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, Demola Bakare, AG. Chairman, Voice of Nigeria, Mohammed Bolama, Nigerian Television Authority, NTA. Also in attendance were ;Special Adviser to the President on Communications and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, Ag Chairman, Code of Conduct Bureau, Bar Murtala Aliyu Akaye, Director General of FRCN Abdulhamid Dembos among others.

Sports / Messi's Napkin Contract Promise Sells For £762,400 by Fivekay(m): 10:48pm On May 17 |
The napkin on which Barcelona committed to sign a 13-year-old Lionel Messi has been sold in an auction for £762,400. The starting price was £300,000 for the 'standard Spanish waxy napkin' which is 16.5 x 16.5cm and was laminated and framed. The napkin, signed in blue ink in December 2000, carries a pledge from then Barcelona director Carles Rexach to sign Messi. It was also signed by Josep Minguella, a transfer adviser to the Spanish club, and agent Horacio Gaggioli, who recommended the Argentine youngster. The napkin in blue ink was offered in an online auction by London-based Bonhams on behalf of Gaggioli. Messi joined Barca a month after the deal was agreed and went on to become their record goalscorer and many regard him as the greatest player of all time. He made his first-team debut aged 16 and scored a record 672 goals in 778 games for the Catalan club. Messi won 10 La Liga titles and the Champions League four times at Barcelona before leaving for Paris St-Germain in 2021 - and the 36-year-old World Cup winner now plays for Inter Miami. The napkin was signed at a meeting arranged by Rexach, who invited Messi's father Jorge to lunch after concerns from the Messi family about a lack of response from Barcelona following the teenager's initial trial. Translated into English, it reads: "In Barcelona, on 14 December 2000 and in the presence of Messrs Minguella and Horacio, Carles Rexach, FC Barcelona's sporting director, hereby agrees, under his responsibility and regardless of any dissenting opinions, to sign the player Lionel Messi, provided that we keep to the amounts agreed upon." Signed and framed napkin on which Barcelona promised to sign a 13-year-old Lionel Messi IMAGE SOURCE,REUTERS Image caption, This napkin cost £762,400 Ian Ehling, head of fine books and manuscripts at Bonhams New York, said: "Since the sale was first announced it captured international attention and fans all over the world have anticipated this day. "What a wonderful result for one of the most thrilling items I have ever handled. Yes, it's a paper napkin, but it's the famous napkin that was at the inception of Lionel Messi's career. "It changed the life of Messi, the future of FC Barcelona, and was instrumental in giving some of the most glorious moments of football to billions of fans around the globe." Bonhams said that "allegations concerning the ownership of the napkin were raised in March but have not been substantiated and appear from recent press comment to have been retracted". The auction house added: "The consignor of the napkin has received a legal opinion which confirms to them that they have clear title and the right to sell the napkin under Spanish law, and the seller gives a full warranty of title with the sale."

Foreign Affairs / Putin And Xi No Longer Have A Partnership Of Equals by Fivekay(m): 10:40pm On May 17 |
Vladimir Putin’s state visit to China this week was a show of strength. It was a chance for the Russian president to prove to the world that he has a powerful ally in his corner. The Russian leader is widely regarded as a pariah after ordering the invasion of Ukraine. But to China’s President Xi Jinping, he is a key partner in seeking a new world order that is not led by the US. And Mr Xi made his guest welcome. He rolled out the red carpet, the band played old Red Army songs, and cheering children greeted both leaders as they strolled through Tiananmen Square. There was even a brief hug for the cameras. Russian and Chinese state media focused heavily on the camaraderie between the two leaders. But in truth, this is no longer a partnership of equals. Mr Putin came to China cap in hand, eager for Beijing to continue trading with a heavily sanctioned and isolated Russia. His statements were filled with honeyed tones and flattering phrases. He said that his family were learning Mandarin – this was particularly noteworthy because he very rarely talks about his children in public. He declared that he and Mr Xi were “as close as brothers” and went on to praise China’s economy, saying it was “developing in leaps and bounds, at a fast pace”. This will likely play well with Beijing officials worried by a sluggish economy. But Mr Xi himself did not echo the tone of these lofty compliments. Instead, his remarks were more perfunctory – even bland. Mr Putin, he said, was a “good friend and a good neighbour”. For China, the welcome ceremony and show of unity is in its interests, but lavishing its guest with praise is not. The costly war in Ukraine, which shows no signs of ending, has changed their relationship, exposing the weaknesses in Russia’s army and its economy. Mr Xi will know that he is now in charge. The war has isolated Russia. China’s ties with the West may be tense, but Beijing has not cut itself off from the world like Russia, nor does it want to. Getty Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping walk on a red carpet Getty While the public statements may have lacked enthusiasm, President Xi did hint at the importance that China places on the relationship. He invited Mr Putin to his official residence, Zhongnanhai. Few leaders are afforded that honour - US President Barack Obama being among them back in 2014, when ties between the two were at their best. President Xi is attempting a fine balance - he wants to maintain an alliance with Mr Putin, while also knowing that close ties with a pariah puts at risk his stable ties with the West which he needs to help his ailing economy. The fact is, this visit was all about the money: Mr Putin needs China’s support for his war in Ukraine. The make-up of the Russian leader’s entourage was a sign of what he hoped to get out of the trip: he brought with him the governor of Russia’s Central Bank, his finance minister and his economics advisor. The joint statement released to mark the visit also contained some eye-catching ideas to increase trade – building a port on an island which the two countries once wrangled over for more than 100 years, and speaking to North Korea to see if Chinese ships could navigate through a key river to reach the Sea of Japan. It mentioned the word “co-operation” 130 times. All of this will, of course, have been carefully watched by the US. Last month, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned China to stop fuelling Russia’s war and trading in components that could be used in Russian drones and tanks. So they will not have missed the fact Mr Putin toured a state-backed university famous for its cutting-edge defense research during Friday’s visit to the city of Harbin. The tour - and the ceremony and symbolism surrounding this visit - certainly appears to suggest Mr Xi is determined to prove that he will not be swayed by pressure from the West. But behind the scenes of this show of unity, there may be limits to how far Mr Xi is prepared to go. After all, China’s interests are not Russia’s interests. As the senior partner in this relationship, Mr Xi will likely co-operate when it suits him – even if his “dear friend” and ally needs him.

Travel / Thousands Evacuate As Wildfire Grows ‘dramatically’ In Western Canada by Fivekay(m): 10:51am On May 16 |
Thousands of people in Canada’s westernmost province of British Columbia (BC) have been evacuated from their homes as authorities warn that a enormous wildfire continues to grow. In a video shared online late on Sunday, Cliff Chapman of the BC Wildfire Service said the Parker Lake Wildfire has exhibited “fast growth and high fire behaviour” since it began on Friday, west of the town of Fort Nelson. A small community of about 3,000 residents, Fort Nelson is located 1,600km (995 miles) north of Vancouver in northeastern BC. “Over the weekend, wildfire activity in the northeast of the province increased dramatically,” Chapman said in the video. As of early Monday morning, the blaze had reached 5,280 hectares (13,500 acres) and was just 2.5km (1.5 miles) west of Fort Nelson, according to authorities. It comes as Canada saw its most intense fire season on record in 2023, as hundreds of wildfires burned in provinces and territories across the country. The massive blazes forced thousands from their homes, destroyed entire communities, and sent enormous plumes of smoke into the United States as well as Europe. |
