Yield: Ohhh, interesting. Based on this findings, I bet girls develop language earlier than boys too. Babies, in general, are very intuned with language right from birth though. Kids' brains are much more plastic than adults anyway and they've an early abundance of synaptic connections, which explains why they recover from brain disorders like aphasia and damages to the left hemisphere much better than adults. It's funny how women still live longer than men.

NEWCASTLE University, United Kingdom scientists
have discovered that as the brain reorganises
connections throughout our life, the process begins
earlier in girls, which may explain why they mature
faster during the teenage years. It was reported in the
Science Daily.
As we grow older, our brains undergo a major
reorganisation reducing the connections in the brain.
Studying people up to the age of 40, scientists led by
Dr Marcus Kaiser and Ms Sol Lim at Newcastle
University found that while overall connections in the
brain get streamlined, long-distance connections that
are crucial for integrating information are preserved.
The researchers suspect this newly-discovered selective
process might explain why brain function does not
deteriorate -- and indeed improves -during this pruning
of the network. Interestingly, they also found that these
changes occurred earlier in females than in males.
Explaining the work, which is being published in
Cerebral Cortex, Dr Kaiser, Reader in Neuroinformatics
at Newcastle University, says: “Long-distance
connections are difficult to establish and maintain but
are crucial for fast and efficient processing. If you
think about a social network, nearby friends might give
you very similar information -- you might hear the same
news from different people. People from different cities
or countries are more likely to give you novel
information. In the same way, some information flow
within a brain module might be redundant, whereas
information from other modules, say integrating the
optical information about a face with the acoustic
information of a voice, is vital in making sense of the
outside world.”
The researchers at Newcastle, Glasgow and Seoul
universities evaluated the scans of 121 healthy
participants between the ages of four and 40 years as
this is where the major connectivity changes can be
seen during this period of maturation and improvement in
the brain. The work is part of the EPSRC-funded
Human Green Brain project, which examines human
brain development.
Using a non-invasive technique called diffusion tensor
imaging – a special measurement protocol for Magnetic
Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners – they
demonstrated that fibres are overall getting pruned that
period.
However, they found that not all projections (long-
range connections) between brain regions are affected
to the same extent; changes were influenced differently
depending on the types of connections. Projections that
are preserved were short-cuts that quickly link different
processing modules, e.g. for vision and sound, and
allow fast information transfer and synchronous
processing. Changes in these connections have been
found in many developmental brain disorders including
autism, epilepsy and schizophrenia.
The researchers have demonstrated for the first time
that the loss of white matter fibres between brain
regions is a highly selective process – a phenomenon
they call preferential detachment. They show that
connections between distant brain regions, between brain
hemispheres, and between processing modules lose
fewer nerve fibres during brain maturation than
expected. The researchers say this may explain how we
retain a stable brain network during brain maturation.
Commenting on the fact that these changes occurred
earlier in females than males, Ms Sol Lim explains:
“The loss of connectivity during brain development can
actually help to improve brain function by reorganising
the network more efficiently. Say instead of talking to
many people at random, asking a couple of people who
have lived in the area for a long time is the most
efficient way to know your way. In a similar way,
reducing some projections in the brain helps to focus on
essential information.”

A five-legged cow has been hailed a miracle because when pregnant women touch its fifth hoof they give birth to baby boys.

Raj Pratap's three-year-old male calf, called Raju, has become famous in Raipur, India, since a woman with four daughters touched the animal's fifth hoof and begged for her next child to be a boy.

When she gave birth to a twin boys in February this year, word soon spread that the calf's fifth leg - a very rare condition which affects just one in every five million cows - was 'lucky'.
Since news got out about the fifth leg, Mr Pratap, a cattle herder, has been swamped by pregnant women who pay to touch the hoof - with 30 women so far stumping up around 500 rupees, around £5, for the privilege.

Amazingly, all 30 women have given birth to boys and Mr Pratap is so confident of his 'miracle calf' that he offers refunds if the baby born is a girl.

This week, on Monday (Dec 23) the cow celebrated its 33rd baby boy after a woman who touched its 'magical hoof' gave birth to triplets....all of them boys.

Mr Pratap said: "All births have been positive and have resulted in a son - and this week a woman gave birth to triplets, all of them boys.

'I don't know why this has happened to us but Raju has a gift and I want to share it with the whole world.

'Some day I dream of taking Raju to Europe or America and making every couple there happy.'

In India boys are 'more valued' than girls as they have 'greater earning potential' to support the family.

The parents of a bride are still expected to provide the groom with a dowry of cash, jewellery and other luxury items before the wedding ceremony can go ahead - despite it being outlawed in India since 1961.

One woman, who gave birth to a boy in October this year but asked not to be named, said: 'It is a gift from god - touching Raju's fifth leg has blessed me with a boy.

'My whole family is so happy that I now have a beautiful son.'

Cows are considered sacred by Hindus who believe one of their most important gods Lord Krishna to have been a cattle herder.

Across India they are allowed to roam the streets of towns and cities and it is forbidden to move them, even if they are obstructing traffic.

sink down hot and hard in Naija's musicdom. The song
with it's powerful hook-line remained at the top of many
music charts for weeks.
9. Koma Roll - Tillaman ft Burnaboy, Iyanya, Ice Prince,
Phyno: The single sizzles with talent especially from
featured acts nailed even harder by the tongue twisting
verses delivered by Ice Prince and Phyno. Tillaman who
is relatively on the up and coming list released the song
remix and video in May but it endured till the end of the
year, making it a party favourite and relentless club
banger.
8. Rihanna - Orezi: The song captures listeners from the
very first second. Orezi who is a 2012 Channel O best
ragga Dancehall nominee no doubt is a success story
with earlier singles "Booty Bounce" and "Emoti" doing
well on the airwaves. Orezi who showed a surprising
strong voice in Rihanna released the single in February
and was made even more magnetic with it's killer video
and a model who looked so much like American singer
Rihanna.
7. Emi ni Baller - Chidinma ft Illbliss & Tha Suspect: Emi
ni Baller is Chidinma's second running hit single after
Kedike which echoed in 2012. The song rode on the back
of a powerful video released in January which saw the
petite framed singer flaunt in rich designer costumes
featuring her music pals Illbliss and Tha Suspect. The
strong chorus is magnetic and it further cements
Chidinma as a lady crooner who is far from going
away.
6. Durosoke - Olamide: Lyricists and bad boy Olamide
(literally) came with this powerful punch in July. The
single with it's seductive upward-downward dance
movements leaves little to your imagination. It was an
instant hit, further fastening Olamide as one of
Nigeria's most sought after artist. Durosoke turns out
to be a Pandora's box of blessings, securing Olamide
and his producers to several award nominations
including The Headies.
5. Sho lee - Sean Tizzle: It was released back in
February but it could be mistaken as a hit dropped only
a few weeks ago. That's how infectious Tizzle's 'Sho
Lee' ravaged fans. The single with strong rhymes and
powerful beats completes every Disk Jockeys charts.
Clubs raged with it for months and still are. The single
catapulted Sean from relative obscurity to international
stages.
4. Limpopo - Kcee: This single was Kcee's magic wand
for the year. It made him so magnetic, mobile giant
MTN came racing for him. He was irresistible in clubs,
gals fell in love over and over again. His wriggling
dance movements became a name; he just couldn't stop.
Limpopo came in March but like Tizzle's Sho Lee, you'd
think it just hit the airwave and true to every good song
it has laced him to multiple award nominations.
3. Personally - P Square: With this single, P Square
thumped a very clear message; that the influx of new
talents in the music industry could never upstage them.
After the mind numbing success of 'Alingo' that took
2012, P Square returned in June with stark images of
the late pop god Micheal Jackson. In the gripping
dance-drenched video, they stomped straight into the
heart of fans; keeping their beats spectacularly alive,
P Square forever remains 'Personally' with their fans.
2. Caro - Starboy ft Wizkid & LAX: Love is such a
beautiful story to tell and it was told exceptionally by
Wizkid and fast rising Starboy act LAX in this
sizzling number. Caro once again re-echeos Wizkid's
penning skills. It's a stripping song about the search
for a mystery girl; completely gripping listeners when it
hit airwaves in August. Its a dance number that could

'god-overall' this year in this classic piece that has left

with ladies in waiting. Weddings nationwide now match
to this song with non-Ibo's effortlessly singing along.
Flavour proves once again that talent runs in his veins
and beats in his heart. The song released in June sits
pretty at our number one position and will stay with us
